don’t understand why, in many offices, workers turn the air-conditioning to the lowest setting then wear thick jackets with hoods. It’s freezing! And that means paying more money for the electricity and to buy winter clothes. I think there should be a TV campaign to make people aware what a waste this is!

To counter the spread of typeA (H1N1) flu, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) wants to install alcohol-based hand sanitisers in all its 3,600 buses, a senior official said yesterday. However, acting BMTA director Opas Phetmunee said the high cost of installation and materials meant the BMTA would first seek budget approval from the ministries of transportation and public health.

n a bid to step up flu protection for their children, parents have voiced their support for the government initiative to bar public activities and gatherings, even though it would affect the social and economic health of the entire country.
Business takes a back seat “The possible financial damage to my business cannot be compared with damage to my son’s life,” says Kawee Vipoomitsitsakul, a lawyer and father of a primary-school child. Kawee has given his son a flu mask and other items to protect him from catching the virus at school, and has told him to wash his hands regularly as well as take a shower after school. He also asks the family’s nanny to take a shower when she arrives each day before taking care of the child. at places such as theatres, restaurants, department stores and concert halls, where flu could spread more quickly. Though the effects of closing businesses have been widely discussed, many business people have voiced support for the policy. “Using the Internet more and seeing my clients privately will help reduce our exposure to crowded places,” says Sakawrat Amatavisuit, owner of manufacturing firm Trinity and a mother of three children, aged nine, 19 and 21. She has told her children to take Vitamin C, wear protective masks and do more exercise. “Going to the cinema or the theatre is temporarily banned, and none of my children is complaining about it,” she says.

Supporting school closures
AUTHORITIES NOW HAVE THE POWER TO PROHIBIT LARGE GATHERINGS OF PEOPLE AT PLACES SUCH AS THEATRES,RESTAURANTS, DEPARTMENT STORES AND CONCERT HALLS, WHERE FLU COULD SPREAD MORE QUICKLY.
Nantinee Jantaparaboon, a mother of a sixth-grader, says the closures of public places including schools, if enforced, needed to be done simultaneously – otherwise the measure
would be useless for stopping the spread of flu. “School closures might be a good opportunity for students
to study by themselves. However, catch-up classes should be provided later,” she says.
THE INSTALLATION OF HAND SANITISERS WILL COST BT10 M. The installation of hand sanitisers would cost Bt10 million while the BMTA’s other anti-flu proposal – giving out sanitary masks to passengers – would cost Bt2 million per day. The proposals are an addition to five measures already in operation – having drivers and conductors wear masks, thorough cleansing of all buses arriving at garages, having all buses remove curtains, having air-conditioned buses operate ventilators every 10 minutes, and cleaning a bus’s handrails after every run. “Despite the financial burden involved, the BMTA wants to cooperate in preventing the spread of flu ... If the pandemic gets worse, we will consider new measures, including using a sterilising spray,” said Opas.

Cyber criminals are aping executives when it comes to sales, marketing and risk management in the world of online treachery, according to networking giant Cisco. “The novel thing is that they have taken the Harvard Business School, General Electric boardroom business training and applied it to their techniques,” said Patrick Peterson, Cisco chief security researcher. Peterson cited how cyber hackers capitalised on interest in the death of pop icon Michael Jackson in late June.
Woman escapes wrong turn into croc-filled river
Fake news on Jackson Disasters, celebrity doings and other major news is routine fodder for bogus e-mails and websites booby-trapped with computer viruses, but in the case of Jackson’s death, crooks cranked out fake news stories to dupe readers. “They brought the Jackson story to market in a way that rivals media outlets. They have an advantage; they don’t have to do any reporting.” Billions of spam messages with links to trick websites or videos promising scintillating Jackson images and information were fired off in the days after his June 25 death, according to Cisco. “Sales leads” that followed online links were turned into “customers”, whose computers were stealthily infected with nefarious codes for stealing data, usurping control of machines.
Crooked SMS Cyber crooks have also taken to sending blanket text messages to cellphones with numbers based on area codes of local banks directing people to call into a service centre to address supposed concerns about their accounts. Callers are connected to automated voice systems that, feigning to represent the banks, ask people to enter account passwords and other personal information that can later be exploited, Peterson said. – A F P

British girl who had a donor heart grafted onto her own after suffering cardiac failure as a baby has had the transplant removed and is living a healthy life with her own heart, doctors said yesterday. The case of Hannah Clark is thought to be the only one in the world where a child’s failing heart recovered enough for the donor organ to be removed, the British surgeons told reporters.
‘Like magic’ “The possibility of recovery of the heart is just like magic,” said Imperial College of
London Professor Magdi Yacoub, who treated Hannah from the beginning. Hannah, now 16, suffered as a baby from severe heart failure due to cardiomyopathy, a problem with the muscle of the heart, and in July 1995, when she was two years old, doctors transplanted a donor heart next to hers. The new organ soon took over much of the functioning of her own heart and Hannah began to recover. However, she suffered from a type of cancer known as EBV PTLD, a common side effect of the drugs given to transplant patients to stop their im-
new
She was treated with chemotherapy and other drugs but the cancer kept returning. Doctors reduced her dosage of immunosuppression drugs to stem the disease, but as a result, her transplanted heart began to fail. In contrast however, her own heart recovered and began functioning normally. In February 2006, the team decided to remove the donor organ so the immunosuppression could be stopped – something that had never been done before. Thirty-nine months later, Hannah has completely recovered from the cancer and her heart is functioning normally.
An Australian woman had a lucky escape after making a wrong turn into a crocodileinfested river. The woman mistook a boat ramp for a road crossing the East Alligator River, about 300 km east of Darwin. Officers who retrieved the vehicle found it surrounded by deadly saltwater crocodiles. Police said the woman had to scramble through the water as her four-wheel-drive vehicle sank into the river near the world heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. The mishap prompted Northern Territory police to warn travellers to carefully research their routes when driving in the area. – AFP
LA city to pay for Jackson service Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that the city of Los Angeles will pick up an estimated US$1.4 million (Bt47.8 million) in costs related to last week’s Michael Jackson memorial service and lambasted a city website set up to request donations. “This is a world-class city, and we provide fire and police protection, period,” Villaraigosa said. “The idea that we would charge the family for a funeral is nonsensical.” Villaraigosa said he will not ask the Jackson family, AEG Live, owner of the Staples Centre where the event was held, or the public to help pick up the tab for police overtime, traffic control and sanitation crews. The mayor called the city’s donation website “ridiculous”. As of last week, some 1,800 fans had donated $35,000. – AP

locks of teenyboppers winged it down to Pattaya on July 4 for the first Pop Music Awards, lining the front of the stage at Bali Hai Cape and swooning in the strong sunlight as they waited patiently to catch a glimpse of South Korean boy band 2PM and newcomer star AJ. Themed “No Music No Life”, the event was a lively affair, with bright lights and lots of music. It kicked off at 3pm with a plethora of Thai popsters taking to the stage to perform two or three songs. Among those drawing loud screams were Dan Woradej, Ben Chalathit, Girly Berry, Laolom, C-Quint, Look Pong and Padcha from “Academy Fantasia”, One-Two-ThreeSoul, Slot Machine, Brandnew Sunset, Knock the Knock, the Richman Toy and Cha-Em. After a break to allow everyone to catch their breath, this year’s award-winners showed their worth with well-rehearsed mini-concerts that had the audience shouting for

South Korean moves Teens screamed as 19-yearold South Korean artist AJ, aka Ace Junior, bounded on to the stage for a high-energy performance of “Dancing Shoes” and “Dry My Tears”. He was followed by contemporary dancer Nam Hyun Joon, former rapper for Young Turks Club, who put on his famed “Poppin” show – a mix of funk and street dance – while singing “Don’t Stop” and “Roaring of Lion”. And then came the moment the audience had been waiting for, the show by 2PM. The boys opened with “Again and Again”, and quickly segued into “Only You”, “I Hate You”, and “10 Points Out of 10”. Their performance wrapped up almost nine hours of pop, leaving gaggles of girls with big smiles on their faces. Roll on the Pop Music Awards 2010!

hat’s a woman worth? American R&Bsoul singer-songwriter Alicia Keys certainly has an opinion on the subject, opining in the lyrics for her 2002 hit “A Woman’s Worth”, that her men would be well to give her diamonds, a cruise around the world and, of course, tender love. The Thai ladies taking part in this Sunday’s back-to-back performances at 2 and at 7 titled “What Women Worth” at the Thailand Cultural Centre would no doubt agree with Keys’ appraisal, though they’re taking to the stage to raise funds for a worthy cause – the kids at Ban Home Hug. But fear not: Songstresses Maleewan Jemina, Saranya Songsermsawasd, Radklao Amratisha, Sukanya Miguel, Haruthai Muangboonsri and Sirintip Harnpradit will all be singing numbers that relate to the concert’s title so the audience will go home with a good idea of what each considers she’s worth. “As a woman, I don’t think of myself as a wife or mother of a child, but rather as a mother of the world. To me, a woman’s worth is to give service to society,” says Sukanya. “Women have an abundance of warmth, affection and love. Men simply cannot behave like us,” says Sirintip. “Women are sensitive to problems that affect them both directly and indirectly. I think we should work towards getting rid of these problems so we can all face a happier tomorrow,” says Saranya. “Most women are hardworking and patient, both at home and at the office,” says Maleewan. “Men and women both have their individual worth but that said, they each need to stick to their ethics,” says Haruthai. “For me, women need to be helpful to those that surround them as well as to society. We should not be judged on our looks or social standing but on our performance,” says Radklao.

Dim sum takes on a different meaning as two chefs from Singapore present their own bite-sized creations Snow fish

Liu Restaurant, at the Conrad Bangkok is offering diners a special opportunity to sample the dim sum creations of two master chefs from the Golden Peony Restaurant in the Conrad Centennial Singapore. Continuing until this Sunday, chefs Chung Ho Shi and Yiu Kit Lam are joining us from Singapore to present their own style of dim sum, a fusion of tastes, textures and colours, all of which are tiny bite-sized compositions. To the surprise of some Thai diners, no dipping sauces are offered, and there’s no form of chilli sauce anywhere. Some of the dim sum are accompanied by their own very subtle sauces, such as Golden Peony Dim Sum, a little “bird’s nest” of lightly fried noodles wrapped around a whole shrimp. Underneath is a very delicate kiwi mayonnaise that complements the little “nest” in both taste and colour. These are not dim sum that you swallow in one bite. Instead, you should keep one in your mouth to savour all the combinations of flavours, pleasing your palate in a delayed reaction.
Sauteed Chinese cabbage and dried shrimp with shrimp paste (slightly, very slightly salty), steamed crab claw with egg white and fresh ginger (allowing the fresh taste of the crab to come through), all these are lovingly presented, much like a painting by a master artist. One dim sum that’s sure to be popular is the chefs’ version of barbecued suckling pig. All that taste in one mouthful. Paired with the various dim sum are French wines from Chevalier Alexis Lichine (distributed in Thailand by Beverage One). You can enjoy the dim sum created by Chefs Chung and Yiu at a set lunch (Bt680-Bt1,099) and the set dinner (Bt1,280 and Bt1,680). A wine dinner (Bt2,580) will be offered on Friday. Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen may quit Formula One for rally racing after the season, a Finnish sports magazine reported. “Kimi doesn’t talk about Formula One anymore. He just talks about rally,” a friend of Raikkonen said in the sports magazine Veikkaaja. The 29-year-old is scheduled to compete in the classic Finnish rally in Jyvaskyla later this month, driving an Abarth Grande Punto S2000.
Tevez has high hopes for City The prospect of Manchester City attracting more of the world's best players to the team spurred Carlos Tevez to join the Premier League club. The Argentina striker, who passed a medical examination, left Manchester United after winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup in just two seasons. “This is the chance to be involved from the start, an opportunity to help build a special experience,” Tevez said ahead of his unveiling yesterday. “There is a great feeling of excitement around the club,” Tevez said. “Look at the quality of the players who have been signed and the prospect of other top-quality players coming, too. Things are happening at this club.” – AP

HATCHET BURIED Beckham and team-mate Donovan settle their squabble AFP, Los Angeles
E
nglish football icon David Beckham and Landon Donovan practiced together for the first time this season yesterday, saying their war of words is over as they settle down to focus on football. Beckham said he and Donovan had a good talk before he rejoined the Los Angeles Galaxy for his first workout as the English midfielder prepares for his return to Major League Soccer on Thursday against the
New York Red Bulls. Galaxy manager Bruce Arena, who formerly coached Donovan on the US national team, was also involved in the talk, which came after Donovan criticised Beckham in comments from a book about Beckham that will be on shelves today. “I’m not going to talk about what was said,” Beckham said. “That was between me, Landon and the manager.” Donovan had already said he had regrets for not speaking with Beckham first and repeated that sentiment yesterday. “We’re getting past it. We’re moving on,” Donovan said. “There are a lot of things I regret. I regret the way that I
went about this process and I also regret some of the things I said.” Meanwhile, the BBC quoted Beckham as saying that he will return to the Premier League where he played for Manchester United 1995-2003. “Never say never. I would definitely consider it. When I left [for Madrid]) my heart was in Manchester – I couldn’t see myself playing against United. Now I wouldn’t rule it out,” Beckham said. The statements sparked rumours of an engagement at Chelsea where ex-Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is now at the helm. Beckham can buy out his remaining contract this year.
Bodybuilders to flex their muscles in Pattaya Forty Thai bodybuilders will be out to display their fitness and muscles in the Multi-Asian Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships from August 11 to 17 in Chon Buri. The championships will be hosted by the Thailand Bodybuilding Association in conjunction with the Sports Authority of Thailand, Pattaya City, Siam Sport Syndicate and Eastern Grand Palace Pattaya and are due to take place at the Thai Alangkarn Theatre, Pattaya. More than 300 builders from 45 countries have confirmed their participation in the one-week event that has 38 categories, the most ever in a world competition. Pattaya’s Mayor Ittipol Khunpluem said in the press conference yesterday that the host city is ready for the tournament. “Everything is set for the championships. Pattaya residents are looking forward to giving the competitors and all visitors a warm welcome,” he said. “I don’t think the type-A (H1N1) flu outbreak will affect the staging of the competition as the government has taken strict measures to control its spread. The event will help boost tourism in Thailand, and Pattaya in particular.” – D A I L Y X P R E S S

SPOTLIGHT ON STARS Paparazzi follow Ronaldo to Ireland for debut with Real DPA, Madrid
F
rom Madrid’s 35 degree Celsius to Ireland’s 15: Real Madrid packed their bags complete with warm clothing to continue their pre-season training in Dublin, as the paparazzi begin to test the club’s security plans for superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid trained in Madrid on Monday before boarding a plane for Dublin. Players went running in the hot Madrid sun, but a chilly rain was set to meet them upon arrival in Ireland. They were set to spend nine days at a luxury hotel near the Irish capital. All players will be part of the group except for Kaka, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Raul Albiol, whose holiday was extended until July 27 because they had long national team duty this summer due to the Confederations Cup. The very presence of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo was set to outshine most of the Spanish giants’ activities. This is the first trip for Ronaldo, 24, with the club that made him the most expensive player in the world after paying Manchester United £80 million for the winger. Ronaldo knows that scores of paparazzi will be waiting for him in Ireland. The Spanish sports daily Marca reported last week that some 40 British journalists had made room reservations at Carlton House, the hotel where the team is staying.
,,
Real Madrid players Cristiano Ronaldo, right, and Pepe in Ireland for pre-season training. The residence is eight-centuries old and is located 22 kilometres outside Dublin. Personalities like Britain’s Queen Victoria or former Hollywood star and princess of Monaco Grace Kelly have stayed there in the past. Real Madrid were set to pay over $850 for each room they reserved. And there were set to be plenty of those, since there are currently 31 players in the squad. “We expect something quiet, although Ronaldo always generates great anticipation. But we are all ready, and I’m sure there will not be as much of a fuss as people think,” one club Real spokesman spokesman said. star from reporters and overexcited fans alike. Ireland awaited the arrival of the Portuguese winger and his team-mates with great anticipation. The Irish Independent noted that the world was focusing on Ronaldo and Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez, while the BBC quoted hotel employees as saying that they were very happy to have Real Madrid there. One of the highlights of the Irish training camp was set to be a friendly game against the Shamrock Rovers on Monday, likely to be Ronaldo’s debut game with the Spanish giants’ white shirt. This should also be his first game with another new star at the club, Frenchman Karim Benzema.
Madrid’s huge clearance sale Real Madrid’s historic spending spree has been suspended, at least for the time being, as they turn their attention to selling some unwanted players. The Spanish giants took Planet Football by storm in June, spending around US$292.96 million, on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol. Now, according to sports dailies AS and Marca yesterday, Real president Florentino Perez has made it clear that there will be no new signings until at least five of the club’s many unwanted players have been sold. AS said that Perez has given the club’s general director Jorge Valdano until July 27 to offload at least some of handful of the misfits from a bloated squad currently containing 32 players. At the top of Real’s list of unwanted players, apparently, are Dutchmen Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Rafael Van der Vaart, Royston Drenthe, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben. Huntelaar is close to signing for Germany’s VfB Stuttgart, with AS Roma also rumoured to be interested. New coach Manuel Pellegrini said he would like Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder to stay, at the same time as asking for a new fullback and two more midfielders. Other players unwanted at the Bernabeu include veteran defenders Michel Salgado and Gabriel Heinze, plus anchorman Mahamadou Diarra. However, most of the players on Valdano’s “hitlist” are reluctant to leave Madrid because of their salaries.

N
BA All-Star centre Shaquille O’Neal has said he hopes to bring his martial arts skills to the basketball court, during a visit to China’s Shaolin Temple – the birthplace of kung fu. “When I was a kid, I saw a lot of Shaolin kung fu performances,” O’Neal told Titan Sports, China’s top sports newspaper, as he toured the temple in central Henan province on Monday. “I always wanted to know if Shaolin kung fu was real or not. Now, at last I know – the Chinese kung fu I saw on television, it was all real,” the four-

Pakistan, sitting pretty at 285-1 just before lunch on the third day, crashed to 320 all out after the break to leave Sri Lanka a victory target of 171 for a decisive 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Skipper Kumar Sangakkara lead the way with a fluent 46 after opener Malinda Warnapura made 54 for Sri Lanka. Known to the Chinese as the “Big Shark”, the 37-year-old O’Neal has practised martial arts in the off-season for years. On Monday, he met with the temple’s top monks and watched a group of warrior monks performing martial arts

exercises. “I am really interested in snake-style kung fu,” Titan quoted O’Neal as saying. “When I retire, I hope to come back to the Shaolin Temple to study for a year. To come here just this one time is not enough.” State television showed crowds surrounding O’Neal, as he mimicked the hand movements that give snake-style kung fu its name. When asked if he would be comfortable playing in Cleveland where the weather is colder than anywhere else he has played during his 17-year NBA career, the centre answered: “I think I can adjust to
any kind of weather. “In China you call me the big shark – now you can call me the polar bear. I will be like a polar bear when it comes to fighting the cold.” Meanwhile Anthony Parker, a swingman who has spent half of his 12-year pro career in the National Basketball Association, signed to serve as a backup to LeBron James next season. Boycott hits ‘spoilt’ Pietersen for six AFP, London
F
ormer England opener Geoff Boycott has blasted Kevin Pietersen for behaving like a “spoilt child” by getting himself out with an ill-judged sweep shot in the drawn opening Ashes Test. Pietersen’s offering of a gentle catch to Simon Katich off the bowling of Nathan Hauritz when on 69 infuriated Boycott, who vented his spleen. “Pietersen is like a spoilt child, the family favourite who can get away with anything because he is the golden boy,” Boycott charged. “Until someone takes the trouble to discipline him he will keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over again.” And Boycott indicated England captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower
Kevin Pietersen after losing his wicket on Sunday. should sit down with the batsman and set him straight. “My concern is that there is no one in the England set up who will go up to Pietersen and tell him that this is not good enough,” Boycott said.
But he added: “Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower are both quiet men and frankly I do not think they have got the courage.” Boycott insisted that England’s batting as a whole left
much to be desired. “The trouble with England’s batsmen is that they are one-dimensional. They only want to play with an attacking mentality, and when they are presented with a situation that demands a different approach, they cannot adapt,” he opined. Former England captain Nasser Hussain attacked the team’s time wasting tactics during the first Ashes Test against Australia as “amateur and embarrassing to watch”. Hussain said he supported subtle attempts at time wasting in order to win, but the blatant tactics used by Andrew Strauss’s team bordered on the ridiculous and were bad for the sport. “It wasn’t a street wise move at all, it was village green stuff. It was amateur and embarrassing to watch,” he said.

THESPORT Padraig Harrington believes his experience winning the British Open the last two years will give him an advantage over almost everyone at Turnberry. The hard part will be giving himself a chance. The Irishman is trying to become only the second player in the last century to win golf’s oldest championship three successive years. He has won three of the last eight majors, the highest rate since 2007 of any golfer, including Tiger Woods. The trouble is, Harrington has obsessed so much with retooling his swing that his game is out of sorts. He has missed five straight cuts on the US and European tours coming into Turnberry, although he did capture the Irish PGA last week outside Dublin. “The one thing I know is that if I get in position, I can win. That’s the nice thing,” Harrington said. “Others can get there, but they won’t win. So at least I can do it if I can get into position. “Can I get into position is what’s in doubt.” Harrington is working with Bob Torrance on his swing and with Bob Rotella on his brain. After a dismal spring, following by constant tinkering, he finally had what Harrington calls an “intervention” with his wife, caddie and Rotella, with instructions to start competing instead of spending so much time on mechanics. But it remains a work in progress. Harrington thought he turned the corner last week when he played two practice rounds at Turnberry, only to feel his swing had deserted him at the Irish PGA, even though he won by seven shots at The European Club against a weak field. “Golf is always – for me, anyway – a juggling act of keeping all the balls in the air and keeping everything working together,” he said. “And I’ve always concentrated on one ball a lot and a few of the other ones have fallen on the ground, and it’s a question of picking them up and getting them all together again.”
