his has been my first year studying away from home, and people keep asking the same question: Do you miss the food back home? The answer is a big “Yes!” I’ve tried the expensive fine dining here, but it doesn’t have the kind of taste I crave. The simple street food of home is what I miss – basic comfort food that you can find anywhere in Thailand.

Catch the solar eclipse D A I LY X P R E S S

The National Astronomical Institute of Thailand (NAIT) said the duration of the eclipse will be exactly from 7am to 9.19am. Countries and areas where a full eclipse can be seen are India, China, Japan and the South Pacific. After the total eclipse in Thailand in 1995, this solar ecplise will set a record as the longest so far in the 21st Century, with a duration time of six minutes and 39 seconds. It will last the longest in Chiang Mai – two hours and 12 minutes – as well as be the largest eclipse, with 69 per cent of the moon’s shadow covering the Sun. Bangkokians can see it from 7.06am to 9.08am and can view the moon’s shadow at a coverage percentage of 42.2 at 8.03am. The NAIT is cooperating with Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and eight universities and colleges in other parts of the country to arrange observation sites from which people can view the eclipse. National Science Museum scientists will also explain at the site about the natural phenomenon, which will occur from 7am to 9.30am. A thousand tinted pairs of spectacles will be provided for free. he Royal Thai Police’s Institute of Forensic Medicine (IFM) is offering a variety of new services made avaiable through high-tech equipment in a new fourstorey building. A “Time of Flight” detector can examine and analyse narcotics and 700 types of toxic substances in one go in 50 minutes. The Bt18-million machine can also verify toxic substances in blood, urine and digested foods extracted from ulcers of either living or dead people. New DNA-verification machines can verify 18 specimen samples in 30 minutes, while existing systems can work on

One-Stop Service These new machines can now be used under the socalled “One-Stop Service” centre for speedy processing. Initiated in 2006 as the “Forensic Medicine Excellence Centre”, this Bt150-million modernisation project is aimed at “boosting public faith in the police’s forensic medicine service”. Under the new structure, the IFM is supervised by the Police General Hospital. Until recent years before the set-up of the Justice Ministry’s Central Institute of Forensic Science Thailand, this agency was the sole authority which handled crime-scene investigations and

forensic medicine practices. Pol Lt-Colonel Sorayuttha Pussa, a senior IFM official, said the One-Stop Service made its services easier for people to access. Those who sought autopsy services from the IFM could consult with case coroners and obtain death certificates or whatever documental evidence at one point of service, often within a day. All documents and information are stored in bar-code-enabled digital versions for easier and faster retrieval.

Sophisticated machines On the first floor of the new building, there are a number of rooms for autopsies. These rooms are also equipped with sophisticated X-ray machines that can detect heavy metals in bodies, take pictures of them and store them digitally. The second floor houses a

department handling missingperson cases and files. It has a photo-related mechanism that can compare pictures of missing persons with unidentified skulls to find a match. The forensic pathology and forensic toxicology departments are on the third floor, where the Time of Flight detector is stored. There is a system similar to it called the GC/IFD, which verifies alcohol in blood and urine or in eyeball liquids in case blood and urine cannot be collected in 20 minutes. A machine that can detect and verify gun-powder residue and objects from crime scenes is also available. The fourth floor houses all DNA profiles. These profiles are useful in identifying victims killed in great numbers in large accidents, fires or natural disasters.

A Florida dentist is being sued for allegedly dropping tools down the throat of an elderly patient – twice. Relatives of 90-year-old Charles Gaal Jr filed the suit accusing Dr Wesley Meyers of negligence. An answering message at Meyers’ office in Winter Park said he was on vacation. The lawsuit says the doctor dropped an “implant screwdriver tool” in 2006 and a “mini-wrench” in 2007. The suit also says Gaal underwent several medical procedures to remove the tools but never fully recovered. He died in 2007. Meyers was fined US$17,000 (Bt580,000) by the state a year later over negligence.

Hands off! A Belgian idea to dodge flu To avoid type-A (H1N1) influenza, don’t shake hands. So says the main employers’ group in Belgium’s affluent Dutch-speaking Flanders region. “If your staff comes into contact with many people, they can limit the danger of infection by not shaking hands,” UNIZO says on its Internet site, where it has posted a list of tips on how to deal with the virus. “The message is: wash your hands regularly with soap,” it adds. “I think other ways can be found to greet people,” said Karel Van Eetvelt, the group’s chief executive, on French-language RTBF television. But Daniel Reynders, a doctor who is the Belgian government’s pointman on influenza, said it was “premature and useless” to stop shaking hands – given that Belgium has so far seen relatively few cases of the flu. 40 yrs later, moon still giant leap for mankind President Obama meets crew today of history-making Apollo 11 mission A F P , Washington

T

he United States today proudly marks the 40th anniversary of its conquest of the moon, a triumph of scientific endeavour now remembered at a time when US dominance in space is increasingly uncertain. President Barack Obama kicks off a week of events when he meets today at the White House with the crew of the Apollo 11 mission, who became the first to accomplish the dream of ages and walk on the surface of the moon. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for

mankind,” said astronaut Neil Armstrong as he stepped down from the lunar lander on July 20, 1969, as an estimated 500 million people on Earth crowded round televisions and radios.

‘A foot on the moon’ “Armstrong is on the moon – Neil Armstrong, 38-year-old American, standing on the surface of the moon, on this July 20, 19 hundred and 69,” intoned US newscaster Walter Cronkite. “Whew, boy,” exclaimed Cronkite, who died last week aged 92. “There he is, there’s a

foot coming down the steps. So there’s a foot on the moon." But dreams that one day we might all be able to travel to the stars have been rudely brought down to Earth. Only 12 men, all Americans, have ever walked on the moon, and the last to set foot there were in 1972, at the end of the Apollo missions. Now ambitious plans to put US astronauts back on the moon by 2020 to establish manned lunar bases for further space exploration to Mars under the Constellation project are increasingly in doubt. And other nations such as Russia, China and even India and Japan are increasingly honing and expanding their own space programmes.

A Northern California postal worker has been sentenced to five months in federal prison for stealing money from children’s birthday cards. Twenty-nine-year-old Dean Hudson of East Linda was ordered to serve five months of home detention after his release from prison. He also must pay nearly US$3,000 (Bt102,000) in restitution. Postal Service inspectors began an investigation after residents in Chico reported receiving mail that had been opened.

n an eyebrow-raising move, maestro Somtow Sucharitkul asked 19-year-old Ruaychai Saengow to serve as concertmaster for the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra’s Thai premiere of Mahler’s “Symphony No 5”. The move was not only approved but encouraged by Thunwin Jaipien, the orchestra’s resident concertmaster. “When I was young,” Thunwin says, “senior violinists were generous enough to step back and give me a chance to lead. That’s how I got my first gig as concertmaster. It’s time for me to do the favour for a new generation of concertmasters.” Thunwin will be at Ruaychai’s side to guide him. “I’m fully aware that some might call this decision madness,” says Somtow. Mahler’s “Symphony No 5” is the most difficult symphony ever attempted by any Thai orchestra, he says. “It’s not only technically difficult, it requires an understanding of idiom, philosophy and poetry. “But I’ve been analysing the Mahler symphonies with Ruaychai ever since he was 12 years old and joined the Siam Philharmonic’s apprentice programme.”

awards, says it’s crucial that classical music nurture the youngsters. “We live in a very senioritydriven culture,” Somtow says, “and there are many issues with allowing young people to lead.” “Music is not an age-driven art form,” he continues. “Mendelssohn wrote his greatest music before the age of 18, and Yehudi Menuhin’s recording of the Elgar concerto, made at the age of 15, is considered one of the finest recordings ever made. And we’re not even talking about Mozart yet. “I want to send an important message to young people in this country who are learning an instrument or just starting to listen to classical music. I want to say this: Don’t be afraid. The entire legacy of classical music is yours. You own this music. You have the right to interpret it anew.”

Paul Lawrie

Paul Lawrie has made a double eagle, the rarest shot in golf, in the final round of the British Open at Turnberry. The former Open champion hit a 4-iron into the hole on the 538-yard, par-5 seventh Sunday. He made the turn in 31 and finished the round at 68. It was the first double eagle – also known as an albatross – at the British Open since Gary Evans in the opening round at Royal Troon in 2004 on the fourth hole.

Rossi holds off Lorenzo to win Valentino Rossi held off Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo to win a thrilling German MotoGP race yesterday, his 101st career victory. The Italian veteran, who started in pole position, finished ahead of Spaniard Lorenzo, with Honda’s Dani Pedrosa, also of Spain, taking third place. “It’s an important win at this stage of the season,” said championship leader Rossi. “It was another fantastic battle with [Casey] Stoner and then Jorge until the last lap. I knew that on this circuit it’s very difficult to pass so I stayed ahead on the final lap.” – AFP

Britain’s Khan wins first title fight Highly touted Amir Khan finally lived up to lofty expectations, earning a unanimous decision

over Andreas Kotelnik to capture the WBA light-welterweight title on Saturday. The 22-year-old Khan’s blistering victory came five years after a career-launching Olympic silver medal, and 10 months after he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 54 seconds. Two judged scored the fight 118-111, while the third had it 120108. “It’s the best feeling ever,” Khan said. “I picked the right shots and was composed. Chumh crossed the finish line in two hours, 22.41 minutes, but his effort was a far cry from the record of 2:16.07, established last year by Kenyan Nelson Kirna Rotich. The 33-year-old from Chiang Mai put in a great run yesterday and crossed the finish line with a course record of 2:49.38 hours, eclipsing the old mark of 2:51.49 set in 2003 by Indonesian Feri Marince Subnafeu. Owen’s instinct still intact

Michael Owen has shown that he will be a big threat.

Michael Owen’s predatory instincts are still intact. That’s the message he sent after scoring the winning goal on his Manchester United debut against Malaysian XI on Saturday. “You train for weeks in preparation for that all-important first game and to score on your debut feels great,” said Owen. “It’s always nice to get off the mark, not just when you join a new club but any time,” he said. “I was sat chatting to Wayne [Rooney] in the dressing room afterwards and he feels the same way after getting off the mark for the season. It’s obviously doubly good for me with it being my first goal for the club, and even though it won’t really count in the grand scheme of things, it does make you feel better. Hopefully I can score a lot more.” AFP

ADE THE CITY MAN Togo striker moves to Sky Blues from rivals Arsenal AP, Manchester, England

E

mmanuel Adebayor became the third striker to join Manchester City in the off-season on Saturday, leaving Arsenal to boost their Premier League rivals’ already extensive attacking options. The Togo international signed a five-year deal at the end of a week that began with Argentina forward Carlos Tevez joining from Manchester United. Manager Mark Hughes had already recruited Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn last month. “Along with the other signings we have made in the last two windows, he will greatly enhance our ability to compete with the top sides,” Hughes said. “Emmanuel has been one of the top forwards in the Premier League since he arrived from France and we are delighted he has agreed to come and join us.” Adebayor won nothing at Arsenal since joining from Monaco more than three years ago. He is hopeful that will change, with City now bankrolled by a big-spending Abu Dhabi owner. “This is a team, maybe in one year or two years, that will be one of the best in the world,” the 2008 African player of the year said. Hundreds of City fans greeted Adebayor, who said: “It made me feel really welcome and special and I can’t wait to play for City’s fans and show them what I can do. I was born to play football and that is what I want to

I have come here to make history for this club and those supporters,” he told reporters. “It is what the chairman and the manager told me that they want too and I can’t wait to get started.” The 25-year-old Adebayor’s transfer fee was reported to be about £25 million. “His arrival is another clear indication that we are determined to augment the players we have here with the best of international talent,” Hughes said. “He adds vital balance and power to our attack. He has everything a top forward needs. He is versatile, powerful, quick Emmanuel Adebayor and agile on the ball.” Arsenal manager Arsene will give something special to Wenger added: “I am sure he Manchester City – we will miss

him.” Apart from Tevez and Santa Cruz, Adebayor will be joining an attack that also contains record signing Robinho and Craig Bellamy, as Hughes continues to transform his squad using the wealth of the club’s Abu Dhabi owner. “We have got a number of strikers,” Hughes said. “It’s about making sure we are able to get everybody up to the right level and we can make sure against any given opposition we have the right combinations.” The need for more options was highlighted Saturday as Valeri Bojinov, Felipe Caicedo, Benjani Mwaruwari and Bellamy all failed to find the net as City lost 2-0 to the Orlando Pirates on a preseason tour of South Africa.

Becks target for Chelsea, Tottenham Under orders from England boss Fabio Capello to stay in tip-top shape if he wants to feature in the World Cup, David Beckham may yet return to the English Premiership with Chelsea or Spurs, the Mail on Sunday reported. After spending an impressive second half of last season with AC Milan, Beckham returned to US Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, his first match since the end of the Serie A campaign. The 34-year-old former England captain had been loaned by the Galaxy to Milan with the proviso that he return for the entire 2009 MLS season, but he got his stay in Europe extended before finally returning – to some boos from sections of the crowd. And according to the Mail on Sunday, Chelsea and Tottenham are ready to bring him home, although Beckham said in midweek he was relishing an eventual return to Italy. “Spurs and Chelsea target Beckham,” the paper headlined its web edition. The Mail noted that new Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti was highly impressed with the veteran at San Siro during his five-month stint and the paper reported Beckham and his wife, Victoria, have been looking at London schools for their three sons. Last week Beckham hinted a return might just be on the cards, having previously said otherwise. “Never say never. I’d definitely consider it.” – A F P

I can still beat this golf course somehow.” The British Open returns next year to St Andrews, the only course in Scotland where Watson has not won.

om Watson arrived at Turnberry knowing that his time at the British Open was running out. A recent change in the criteria meant former champions could no longer compete when they were older than 60. Then again, a victory by the 59-year-old Watson would change that. The age limit has been getting more attention as Watson has stayed atop the leaderboard this week at Turnberry, particularly given the nature of links golf that doesn’t always require power to compete. Watson prodded reporters by deferring questions to Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson. Then came an announcement late Saturday that began “A point of clarification”.

Tom Watson with his wife Hilary after finishing his third round. Turns out the Open exempts champions for 10 years, although it is listed this year only as champions from 1999-2008. R&A spokesman Malcolm Booth said that criteria still applies, no matter how old the champion is. Watson, a two-time Masters champion, can play at Augusta National as long as he wants, but likely it won’t be much

longer. That course now is too long for him – Watson shot 7483 this year. “I don’t want to be a ceremonial golfer,” Watson said. “When Peter Dawson called me to tell me about the 60-year age limit for the tournament, I said, ‘Peter, I think that’s a sensible decision.’ You’ve got to let the younger kids play.” Even so, the British Open is

Padraig Harrington has been working all year on retooling his swing, even though he won two majors last year, including a second successive British Open. He feels as if he’s not working, he’s not improving. He won’t be winning a third claret jug after a 76 in the third round put him 13 shots out of the lead. Tom Watson, the 54-hole leader at age 59, said one reason he can still compete is because of a long swing. And he believes that’s what is hurting Harrington.

“When I was a kid, my dad said, ‘Shorten the swing, shorten the swing.’ Well, you shorten the swing, it’s hard to go longer once you shorten the swing,” Watson said. “And my old pro, Stan Thirsk, he said to me, ‘Don’t listen to your dad.’ When you get to be an old guy, that long swing will really do you well, because you’ll have that rhythm. “I look at Padraig Harrington right now, he shortened his swing, and I think he’s having troubles because of it,” Watson said. “I liked the length of the swing last year, and now he’s shortened the swing and he’s having a hard time with it. You lose your rhythm when you shorten the swing.”

Divots Tom Watson was asked if he was the George Foreman of golf, a reference to become an ancient champion. “No, I don’t name all my kids ‘George.’ My kids have different names,” he said.

he national women’s volleyball squad will come up against some of the world’s elite teams such as Brazil, Russia and China when the World Grand Prix gets underway from July 31 to August 16. Twelve strong teams will be pitted against one another in the three-week preliminaries, and at the conclusion of it, only the top five teams plus hosts Japan will qualify for the grand finals in Tokyo between August 19 and 23. The Thai squad will leave for Kielce, Poland, next Sunday to compete in Pool B from July 31 to August 2 against Asian champions Japan, the 2007 champions Netherlands and Poland, the only team Thailand beat last year. Thailand next join the Beijing

Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai with captain Wilavan Apinyapong. Olympic champions and defending and seven-time winners Brazil, Qatar Asian Games champions China and Poland in the Pool E competition in Macau from August 7 to 9. The Thai team will then return to Bangkok for the Pool I contest at Keelaves 2 Gym against world champions Russia, Beijing Olympics silver medallists USA and Puerto Rico from August 14 to 16. Thailand have competed six times in the women’s premier volleyball tournament. They finished last among eight teams

in their debut attempt in 2002. A year later, they finished a joint ninth with Japan among 12 participating teams. They finished 10th in 2004, 12th in 2005, 11th in 2006 and 11th again last year. “Our chance to make it to the finals in Tokyo is very slim, but what we really need is an opportunity to play against much stronger rivals to sharpen our skills and learn more tactics. I hope our girls will gain from the exposure in the prestigious tournament,” says Thai coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai.

The FIVB Coaches Course Level 1, conducted by FIVB Development Center in Thailand, kicked off at 9am at Ramkhamhaeng University Sports Centre in Bangkok on Saturday with Somkuan Rawiwat, secretary-general of the Thailand Volleyball Association, presiding over the opening ceremony. The 12-day course will be jointly conducted by Kurt Radde, course director from Germany, and Nai Chi Chang, course instructor from Chinese Taipei. A total of 37 coaches from 11 federations including Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand are participating in the course. The internationally-recognised course will enable the coaches to raise the technical level of their coaching. The event, which will have intense practical and theory-based sessions, is mainly conducted to improve the knowledge and competence of coaches and teachers so that they gain recognition as FIVB coaches. The coaches will also learn the most recent trends of the modern game of volleyball. Radde, who is satisfied with the work done by the Development Centre, told the 37 coaches to work hard for the next 12 days and gain knowledge from the course to develop and promote volleyball in their countries upon their return.
