New system can monitor time kids spend on Net games

wishes People in Ang Thong celebrate Thaksin Shinawatra’s 60th birthday yesterday. Thousands of the former prime minister’s supporters gathered at temples across the country to mark the occasion. During his phone-in yesterday, Thaksin sang a ballad called ‘I shall return’.

Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering and the Internet Foundation for Development of Thailand have invented a new computer system with low investment that can help game-cafe owners limit the time kids spend playing computer games to three hours a day. With the new computer system, a kid is required to enter the number of his or her identification card to be able to play a game via the server of online game providers, foundation director Srida TantaAthipanich said. The provider will then verify each child’s information – such as name and date of birth – and input the information with the central server, which will monitor the amount of hours a child plays games. “The central server will inform online game providers once a child’s account exceeds three hours a day,” Srida said. “They are supposed to not allow children to continue playing.” Paediatrician Dr Chanika Toochind said there is a need to control the time children spend in front of the computer playing games as the endorphins released while they play can lead to a gaming addiction. NO LOITERING Sexily dressed females in front of our places are a selling point, entertainment venues argue D A I LY X P R E S S

M

any entertainment venues are feeling the pinch following recent police moves to bar sexily dressed females, who act as “drinking partners”, from loitering in front of the establishments. “The economy is bad. The government should not have added salt to our wounds,” says a manager at one of these places. Identifying himself only as Keng, the man says female drinking partners are a selling point. “When people drive past our venue and see beautiful women, they want to drop by,” Keng says. “When you open a shop, you need to show your

products or else your potential customers will never know what you have to offer.” Keng insists that his venue has strictly banned prostitution. “We dismiss any drinking partner who offers sexual services,” he points out. The 10 women working at his place are expected to entertain guests by having a friendly chat and singing karaoke with them. Noo, a 23-year-old woman, wears black hot pants and a body-hugging blouse with a wide neck when she wants to attract customers. “But I have a shawl to wrap around my body,” she says. “I think it should be okay for me to sit out to draw customers in. If there’s no cus-

tomer, who will give me a tip?” At another pub, a part-time drinking partner says she should be allowed to attract passers-by because this is her livelihood. “I work here because I want to earn extra money,” she says. She has a regular job in the daytime. However, another drinking partner says she feels embar-

rassed to wear sexy outfits and sit in front of her employer’s venue. “But my family is poor. I have to make money,” she adds. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a man admits that scantily clad women in front of entertainment venues often prompt him to drop in. “And I think the women should be allowed to do so. Their clothes are not too revealing and they do not make any indecent moves,” he adds. The Metropolitan Police Bureau has been toughening its stance against entertainment venues that have sexily clad women hanging around out front because many of them wear nothing more than underwear and see-through dresses. Also, some drivers reported that they were worried about car accidents given that sexy women could distract motorists.

An image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the atmospheric disturbance on Jupiter believed to have been caused by a comet or asteroid impact. Astronomers cannot be absolutely sure Jupiter was struck by a space object, but the evidence seems compelling. Reunited after 16 years A British man and his Spanish former sweetheart have finally married 16 years after they drifted apart, reunited by a love letter lost behind a fireplace. Steve Smith and Carmen RuizPerez, both now 42, fell in love 17 years ago when she was a foreign exchange student in Brixham, England. But their relationship ended after she moved to France. A few years later, in a bid to rekindle their love, Smith sent a letter to her mother’s home in Spain. It was placed on the mantelpiece, but slipped behind the fireplace and was lost for over a decade. It was only found when builders removed the fireplace. “When I got the letter I was so nervous,” Ruiz-Perez said. “I nearly didn’t phone him at all. I kept picking up the phone then putting it down again. But I knew I had to make the call.” Said Smith: “When we met again it was like a film. We ran across the airport into each other’s arms. We met up and fell in love all over again.” – A F P

Whipping for beer-drinking M’sian model sparks debate Punishment by caning is defined as torture, Amnesty International says A F P , Kuala Lumpur

A

n Islamic court’s decision to have a Muslim model whipped for drinking beer at a pub has triggered controversy in Malaysia, a multicultural country where such convictions are extremely rare. Last week, a Sharia or religious court sentenced Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, to six strokes of the cane and a fine of 5,000 ringgit (Bt48,000) after she pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in eastern Pahang state. Her conviction created a furore in the nation which is predominantly Muslim, but also home to large Indian and Chinese minorities. Alcohol is

widely available in most parts of the country and Muslims are rarely punished for consuming it.

‘Wrong way to educate’ “The punishment of whipping is defined as torture and hence we should not in any way condone it,” said Amnesty International Malaysia executive director Nora Murat. “This is the wrong way to educate anyone about the religion. When the sin is between her and God, there is always an option of being repentant. It’s up to God to decide on her faith, and not people,” she said. Most were stunned that whipping of women was per-

mitted in Malaysia’s Islamic courts, which operate alongside civil courts under a dualtrack system. “It’s not just unkind, it’s unjust,” leading women rights activist Ivy Josiah said, while Women’s Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil reportedly said that while she did not approve of Muslims drinking, she was shocked by the ruling. Islamic scholars, however, argued the punishment was necessary to deter other Muslims from drinking. “The [punishment] meted out on her is just to shame her and educate her,” said Harussani Zakaria, an influential mufti or religious scholar. Even as the debate raged, Kartika said she wanted to “hasten” the punishment so she could get on with her life.

A Minnesota couple’s joyous wedding dance featuring the bride and groom boogieing down the aisle to the altar has become a Web sensation. The dance sequence opening the wedding ceremony of Kevin Heinz and Jill Peterson in St Paul, Minnesota, has been viewed more than 4.75 million times since it went up on YouTube less than a week ago. In the five-minute video, ushers, bridesmaids and groomsmen shimmy down the aisle to the strains of the Chris Brown song “Forever” – and the surprise of the guests gathered in the church. The groom performs a somersault on his way to the altar and his hip-swaying bride receives a standing ovation as she joins him for the exchange of vows. Peterson said the only guests who were aware of what was going to happen were their parents. The video is online at youtube.com/watch?v=494JhLEiN0

n “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3”, Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, a man whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train by the criminal mastermind Ryder (John Travolta). Directed by Tony Scott, “Pelham” was shot in New York City’s subway and marks the fourth collaboration between the director and the actor.

What is your own relationship with subways?

I grew up in New York and subways were the way to get

around so I spent many hours on subways as a kid. I hadn’t taken the subway in more than 20 years because I used to spend two hours each way on it every day and I swore as soon as I had two pennies to rub together I would never ride it again and I didn’t! Until this movie of course! What is it like shooting a movie in a subway tunnel?

It was trippy. You had to take a full safety course then walk from one station to the next and stand between trains and have two trains pass you. We would be working at 4 in the morning and we might stop shooting just for a moment until

a train went by. You’d see the faces in the train window and them going, ‘what the heck?’ but you get used to it down there. What kind of research did you do?

I spent time with a retired dispatcher who worked there for 60 years and another train dispatcher, Joseph Jackson. What did you learn that was most helpful?

That the third rail is very dangerous and if you step on it, you fry. You don’t realise it from the platform but there is another foot of train under there and it’s huge. And the wind will move you a bit when

it comes screaming by too, so it can be a very dangerous place to be down on those tracks and you have to always be on your toes if you want to stay alive. Why did you want Walter to be a dispatcher when in the original film he’s a cop?

Early on, I said to Tony, “I don’t want to be a cop”. Ryder, John’s character, just likes the guy and he’s a sociopath and thinks he has a relationship with my character and only wants to talk to him. So that seemed more interesting, that a civilian was caught in the middle but volunteered to help anyway and ends up saving himself.

American decorator Phoebe Howard says too many people mix and match home furnishings and forget harmony By Terri Sapienza THE WASHINGTON POST

P

hoebe Howard was a 38year-old stay-at-home mother when she decided to start decorating. Years later she began taking private clients, and her first project landed on the cover of House Beautiful magazine. Today Howard’s name is widely recognised in the design world, and her work has become synonymous with the US Southern style. She and her husband Jim, also an interior decorator, are owners of eight home-furnishings stores in four Southern cities.

How would you describe your style? It has a timeless quality, because I mix antiques with modern pieces. A hallmark of my style is that I use colour in a monochromatic way. When you limit colour contrast, it brings a sense of calm, order and serenity to a room, even if the colours are vibrant.

What’s the simplest way to update a space? Paint. That’s the easiest. It’s

inexpensive, it only takes a day, and it’s guaranteed to bring about a big impact.

What colours are you most drawn to when decorating? I’m personally drawn to a soft, neutral palette of blues, greens and sands. This kind of palette is something that’s soothing and calming to me, I think because I grew up on the beach and those colours always make me feel at home. I like to say, “I’m married to beige, but I have affairs with colour.”

A soft bedroom filled

with subtle variations on white.

Are there furniture pieces and accessories you turn to again and again?

My signature favourites are starburst mirrors – I dig around for antiques – Bridgewater club chairs with English arms, delicately turned legs and a high, tight back, modern coffee tables, painted beds, upholstered dining room chairs, antiques that have a modern silhouette. THE SPORT briefly Safina storms into Portoroz final World number one Dinara Safina, playing her first tournament since her Wimbledon semi-final humiliation, reached the final of the Portoroz WTA event on Saturday. The Russian eased past Alberta Brianti 6-4, 6-3 and will face either Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele or Sara Errani of Italy in the final. Safina won just one game in her Wimbledon semi-final demolition at the hands of Venus Williams three weeks ago, a result which further dented the credibility of a player yet to win a Grand Slam title. – AFP

elipe Massa’s Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen said the Brazilian’s horrendous freak accident on Saturday was just “bad luck” and that there is little that can be done about it. Finn Raikkonen 29, said: “It is just an unlucky situation what happened. It could have happened two years ago – or it could happen five years ago. “The cars have an open cockpit so there is always the chance that something can hit it. It is not the first time that

someone has been hit and unfortunately sometimes drivers get very badly hurt or die. “It is part of the risk in motor racing. For sure Felipe was very unlucky and hopefully will be okay, but you cannot get rid of that issue. You would need to make a rule for a bullet proof window in front of you to get rid of that issue. It is just unfortunate that these things happen sometimes.” Brazilian Massa, of Ferrari, suffered skull and eye injuries, as well as brain concussion,

when he was struck on the head by a spring that broke loose from compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car. The debris hit Massa's helmet just above his left eye at around 275 kph. It knocked him unconscious and caused him to crash into a tyre barrier at Turn Four of the Hungaroring circuit. Massa was reported to be stable in hospital in Budapest yesterday, after undergoing surgery on a skull fracture on Saturday. A spokesman at the AEK Hospital in Budapest said

City ‘stupid and arrogant’ Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono hands over the trophy to Indian Gaganjeet Bhullar yesterday.

Ferguson hits out at Manchester rivals and calls them a small club with a small mentality

Formula One driver Felipe Massa is in stable but ‘life-threatening’ condition after Saturday’s crash, prompting a full probe by the sport’s governing body

that they had been reassured by a scan. “The result of the CT is reassuring,” said doctor in chief Peter Bazso. Bazso said that the situation remained critical. “Yes, he is in a life threatening condition,” said Bazco. “He is in an acute phase. What can come next, we don't know.” A full investigation into the causes and repercussions of Massa’s dreadful freak accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix was launched yesterday. The investigation will be conducted by the sport’s ruling body, the International Motoring Federation, with the Brawn GP team. Massa suffered skull and eye injuries, as well as brain concussion, when he was struck on the head by a spring that broke loose from compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car. Barrichello, a fellow-native of Sao Paulo and a close friend of Massa, visited Massa at the hospital on Saturday evening.

Massa’s father, mother and pregnant wife flew to Hungary from Brazil. Ross Brawn, boss of the Brawn team, said he would do all he could to find out exactly what had happened, but warned against knee-jerk reactions. Defending world champion Briton Lewis Hamilton said: “I believe things happen for a reason and for two incidents to happen in such a short period of time, we can’t ignore it. We’ve got to make sure we learn from it, and improve if we can.”

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has labelled big-spending Manchester City a “small club” who are “arrogant” and “stupid” as his side prepare to wrap up their Asian tour yesterday. In an interview with English newspapers during United’s pre-season tour, the Scot said it would be tricky for City to break into the Premier League’s top four despite their huge summer spending spree. And he expressed anger at a prominent city-centre billboard in Manchester that says “Welcome to Manchester” under a skyblue graphic of Argentina’s Carlos Tevez, who crossed to United’s bitter rivals this summer. “The billboard? It’s City isn’t it?" said Ferguson, quoted in the Sunday Mirror. “They are a small club, with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United. That’s

all they’ve ever done and they can’t get away from it.” “What they are doing now is just stupid,” he said. “That arrogance will be rewarded in the right way. It is a go at us. That's the only thing it is. “They think taking Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. “It is poor stuff, although I thought he would go to City a long time ago.” Ferguson said City’s biggest triumph was getting the players to Eastlands and that they had gone there because of the money. “I don’t know if they will do anything. It is not easy to get in that top four so the biggest success of all is to just get the players there. They might not get beyond that,” he said, according to the Independent on Sunday. “They have come because of the money. That is the big attraction to people nowadays. That is the reason they have gone there.

India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar proved he was a star in the making when he secured his maiden Asian Tour title with an emphatic two-stroke victory at the Indonesia President Invitational yesterday. The 21-year-old fired a flawless five-under-par 67 in the final round at Damai Indah Golf course to make up for the heartbreak of finishing runner-up in the event two years ago. His four-day total of 22-under-par 266, which earned him almost US$64,000, was well clear of Australia’s Adam Blyth, who shot a 68 for second place. Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot finished third on 269 after a 66 while Korea’s Ted Oh was a further stroke back in fourth place. “I’ve got no words to describe how happy I am,” said Bhullar, who was pipped by Filipino Juvic Pagunsan’s birdie, eagle finish in 2007. “I’ve been waiting for this for the past two years and I played really well today.” Bhullar, who dropped only one bogey all week, took a one-shot lead into the last round after the third round was completed this morning. He then shot four birdies in his opening six holes, and made the turn with a healthy four-shot lead.

PERFECT START Brussow the hero in Boks’ triumph over the All Blacks A F P , Bloemfontein, South Africa

outh Africa captain John Smit hailed man-of-thematch Heinrich Brussow after a 28-19 victory over New Zealand on Saturday got their Tri-Nations campaign off to a perfect start. “He is a phenomenal find and is making a big difference for us and also making it very difficult for the opposition,” Smit said of the 23-year-old Free State Cheetahs flanker who was playing only his fifth Test. Tighthead prop Smit sympathised with the demanding schedule the All Blacks faced playing on the Highveld just one week after defeating Australia by six points in the coastal city of Auckland. “It’s difficult to turn around from one week to the other and play at altitude,” Smit admitted. “It was a great start by the Springboks and hopefully we can take it further.” Coach Pieter de Villiers was ecstatic with the organisation of his team, who sealed success when centre Jaque Fourie scored a breakaway try eight minutes from full-time at

All Black Sitiveni Sivivatu tries to elude the Springboks during their Tri-Nations rugby union match at Bloemfontein on Saturday. Vodacom Park. “Hats off to the tight five. I think a positive approach helped us – we knew we had to create our own chances.”

New Zealand coach Graham Henry insisted the number of mistakes his side made, and not a tough schedule, was to blame for their first Test loss

in Bloemfontein. “There are no excuses. We have no complaints about the altitude or the turnaround time between the last Test and this one. “This is a very good Springbok side. They deserve to be number one in the world.” New Zealand conceded a lot of first-half penalties and the margin of defeat could have been wider had South Africa fly-half Ruan Pienaar not missed four of five kicks at goal. However, it was the frequency with which the visitors conceded possession that frustrated Henry most. “We needed more composure and discipline and should have created more opportunities,” he reflected. “A side cannot afford to make errors when you have the ball. We lost the battle, but not the war.” Skipper Richie McCaw felt the All Blacks were getting on top at one stage in the second half when they cut the deficit to four points thanks largely to the goal kicking of fly-half Stephen Donald. “But we were forced into mistakes. There are things you just cannot afford to do in Test matches,” said the flanker, referring to many turnovers in the tackle and handling errors.

Bolt firmly anchors Jamaican relay team Usain Bolt and his club team-mates ran the fourth-fastest 400-metre relay time in history – 37.46 seconds – at the London Grand Prix meeting on Saturday, shrugging off a developing doping probe involving Jamaican sprinters. Bolt anchored the team that included fellow Jamaicans Yohan Blake and Mario Forsythe, plus Antigua’s Daniel Bailey, representing the Kingston-based Racers Track Club. “It was a good race, a good team effort,” the triple Olympic champion and world record-holder said. Blake, who ran a personal best 9.93 to finish third behind Bolt in Paris last week, declined to answer questions about the probe on Saturday. Earlier on Saturday, defending world champion Tyson Gay won the 200 after easing up to finish in 20 seconds flat, though he required pain killers to numb a groin injury and went straight to the treatment room. In the women's 100 on Saturday, Carmelita Jeter of the US ran 10.92, lowering her career-best by 0.04. A P , London

Contador does it against all odds

Tour de France overall leader Alberto Contador of Spain, jubilates on the podium on Saturday.

Alberto Contador is basking in double satisfaction: The Tour de France victory is an easy ride away, and he’s pulled it off in spite of his own team – and Lance Armstrong. The 26-year-old Spaniard all but secured a second victory in cycling’s main event on Saturday, by fending off challengers in the race climax on one of France’s toughest climbs: Mont Ventoux. Armstrong, the seven-time champion, will be on the podium for an eighth time, but he's third – not on the step he had aimed for. When he sees Contador in the yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysees, Armstrong – after not-so-subtle

verbal jabs against the Spaniard during the three-week race – could very well be green. In the heat of the race, Contador had sought to play down the differences in their Kazakh Astana team, dodging or downplaying questions about “tension” that Armstrong evoked. With victory nearly certain, the Spaniard opened up a bit. “My conscience is very clear because in the end I have run two races, one on the bike and one at the team hotel,” he said on Spanish broadcaster TVE after Saturday’s ride. Contador knew his task at the Tour would be tricky when the American announced last year he was

coming back from retirement to join his old mentor, Johan Bruyneel, at the Astana team. The Belgian strategist had been training Contador as his new cycling star. Once the Tour was on, and Armstrong’s barbs flew, Contador counted the days and tried to focus on his racing – not on the Armstrong and tensions at the team dinner table. “Every day, I told myself: ‘One day less’,” he said at a news conference. “The preparations for the Tour were complicated. There were a lot of elements stacked against me, but instead of being worried, I took it all as an added motivator,” he said. “I think I succeeded.”

ustralian Ray Roberts’s rebranded DK46 Evolution Sails underlined their supremacy over the IRC Racing Class in the Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, which concluded yesterday off the Phuket’s East Coast. Roberts sailed home in second place in both races on the final day of the four-day Asia’s most exciting and fast-growing regatta to take line honours with 10 points after eight races with one worst performance dismissed. The Aussie cut off his disappointing fourth race, in which he finished a belowpar fourth place, to capture the IRC Racing title. New Zealander Neil Pryde’s Welbourne 52 Hi-Fi made good

However, despite the awesome display yesterday, Hi-Fi finished a close second place overall in the class, just one point behind the winners. Australian Peter Ahern’s de-

fending champions Farr40 Yo!2 had to be content with the third place overall with 19 points. In the IRC 1 Class, Jaray Tipsuk’s all-Thai crew on the Platu 25 Mitrmitri made the Kingdom greatly proud yesterday to capture the crown with 12 points. Mitrmitri was in su-

perb form to snatch victories in both races contested yesterday. Briton Peter Dyer’s IOR ½tonner Madame Butterfly finished second place overall in the class after collecting 16 points from eight races, while the third place went to Danish Niels Degenkolw’s X Yacht IOR ¾-tonner Phoenix, two points behind. Austrian Horst Lakits’ Swan 55 Big A finished a distant second overall with 10 points, while Australian Rob Azzopardi’s Prosafe Cunning Plan came in third place with 14 points. Torres on target in Singapore Liverpool crushed Singapore 5-0 yesterday for their first win in four pre-season games with Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin among the scorers. Albert Riera and promising young Hungarian striker Krisztian Nemeth also found the back of the net in the morale-boosting win. The Reds needed a victory to ramp up their preparations for the new season where they will start as one of the favourites to clinch their first title in 20 years after a credible second behind Manchester United in the last campaign. To the disappointment of fans here, Steven Gerrard missed the match after remaining in England following his acquittal over an alleged assault but Torres played 30 minutes in a return from his summer break. And in a potentially significant move, Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso came on with 13 minutes remaining. AFP, Singapore

UNDERDOGS CALL THE SHOTS Songphon and Kunchala win mixed doubles but Boonsak disappoints Lerpong Amsa-ngiam D A I LY X P R E S S

econd seeds Songphon Anugritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul won the historic mixed doubles title after they dashed the hopes of Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam in the SCG Thailand Grand Prix Gold 2009 concluded yesterday at the Nimibutr Gymnasium. The underdogs came back from a sluggish first game to surprise the top seeds 11-21 21-17 21-14 for their maiden Grand Prix Gold crown. They also marked their names as the first Thais to claim the tournament’s mixed doubles. Sudket and Saralee have been 0-3 in the three final attempts here, reaching the finals in 2004 and 2005. “We were a bit stiff at the beginning. But after that we threw

after the first and w took control of the game from then on,”' said Kunchala. But fans had to bear with another disappointing year for their beloved Boonsak Ponsana who had to settle with the second best position for

the third consecutive time. The local ace went down to Vietnamese second seed Tien Minh Nguyen 16-21 13-21 in the men’s singles final. “I was physically 70 per cent because I just recovered from a flu. It was okay to get this far but it

was a bit sad I couldn’t win for the fans,” said the world No 19 who won here just once in 2004 out of six final attempts. The Vietnamese world No 13 deserved the victory. He was the superior in all aspects, attacking affectively and defended solidly when he needed to. “Best match of my life. I felt relaxed and comfortable. I work hard every day and spend 80 per cent of my time for badminton,” said 26-year-old after winning his maiden title. Chinese women won two gold medals after Liu Jian beat compatriot Wang Rong 21-16 2118 in the women’s singles while second-seeded Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen downed fourthseeded Gao Ling and Wei Yili 22-24 21-17 21-15 in the doubles category. The men’s doubles title went to Malaysia’s Peng Soon Chan and Khim Wah Lim following their upset 20-22 21-14 21-11victory over countrymen Tan Fook Choong and Wan Wah Lee, the top seeds.
