Youths are reportedly addicted to the Hi-Low dice game on cellphones, prompting police to urge parents to check their kids’ phones in a bid to crack down on the gambling trend. An unnamed Mathayom 3 student says he likes to play the Hi-Low game as it is convenient to play anywhere anytime if there are enough players. Another college student says some students lose their Bt1,000 weekly allowance in one day over the game and have had to borrow money. He himself owes his friends Bt2,000 because of the addictive nature of the game. Muang Chaiyaphum deputy superintendent Pol Lt-Colonel Banyat Thangklang says such a gambling trend is difficult to suppress and more patrolling officers have been dispatched to check suspicious youngsters’ cellphones for the game as it violates the Gambling Act. He has urged parents and schools to check youngsters’ mobile phones to reduce the impacts from gambling, which could lead to other crimes. Banyat warns that computer or cellphone shops that download such a program onto young customers’ phones – reportedly for only Bt30-Bt50 – face punishment according to the Child Protection Act.

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE Thai-language scholar seeks overhaul of Royal Institute dictionary to correct gonzo computer vocabulary D A I LY X P R E S S

T

o discourage the widespread gonzo computer vocabulary popular among teenagers, a Thai-language scholar yesterday called for an overhaul of the Royal Institute dictionary to correct the mistakes. Prof Kanjana Narksakul also expressed worry about the “weird” use of other English words in addition to the computer vocabulary, and said the Royal Institute would never define new English words in Thai using vulgar or lewd translation. She says a new dictionary is needed along with a campaign

to correct the mistakes, otherwise teenagers will get confused over which words to use and which to avoid. Citing examples of gonzo words, Kanjana says Microsoft is termed “small and floppy” in Thai, with micro defined as “small and soft and floppy”. Joystick is termed the “stick of fun”, Windows Phahu Banchaorn [multiple windows] in Pali and Visual Basic Pathom Phis [primary sight] in Pali.

Stop it! Kanjana has also called on those who post gonzo words on websites citing the Royal Institute reference as a source

of information to stop doing it, because the Internet is widely used by teenagers who have a tendency to make jokes of those words and spread them to fellow netizens.

‘Use English’ In the wake of Thai Language National Day tomorrow, Culture Ministry permanent secretary Weera Rojpojanarat has called for immediate solutions to end the use of gonzo in Thai. Sak Waewwiriya, a Thai-language teacher at a renowned school in Nonthaburi, feels computer vocabulary should be used in English to solve the problem. He has called on the Royal Institute to hold a public referendum to determine whether new Thai words should be created for compu-

ter vocabulary or whether English words should be used. Warin Suksuchom, an eleventh grader who attended yesterday’s session entitled “Language Doctors”, said computer vocabulary was easier to use in English. She also blamed politicians who use casual words such as “hey” in public interviews, saying that adults should be role models to youths before giving lectures. Thai-language lecturer Assoc Prof Akkhara Bunthip from Srinakharinwirot University says a campaign for the correct use of Thai should be held continuously all year and not just on Thai Language National Day. She has called on newscasters and celebrities to be extra careful about what they say, because they have influence on young people.

xecutors of Michael Jackson’s estate said the late pop star had provided full financial support to his mother when he was alive and his estate should continue to do so after his death, The Los Angeles Times reported. The daily newspaper said that in court papers filed last week, the administrators of the estate asked for approval to pay a monthly allowance to Katherine Jackson, 79. The specific amount requested was not disclosed. “The special administrators are informed and believe that Mrs Jackson has no other sources of income currently available other than Social Security income,” lawyers for administrators John Branca and John McClain wrote in the filing, according to the paper. Jackson’s mother is caring for her son’s three children, and the administrators have requested an additional monthly allowance for them. According to the court papers, the Jackson children are beneficiaries of an insurance policy “but the insurance proceeds have not yet been collected”, The Times said. Asian elephant born in Aust named ‘Luk Chai’ The first Asian elephant born in an Australian zoo has been named Luk Chai, which means son or male child in Thai. The name was chosen out of more than 30,000 entries in a competition run by Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. New South Wales state Premier Nathan Rees said yesterday that the name represents the elephant’s Thai heritage. The calf was born earlier this month to Thong Dee, one of a group of ele-

phants brought to the zoo from Thailand in 2006. More than 12,000 people a day have visited Taronga since the male Asian elephant went on show, compared with 4,500 a day prior to the July 4 birthday. There are only an estimated 34,000 Asian elephants left across the continent. The Australian zoo’s elephants are part of an international breeding programme that aims to preserve the genetic diversity of the species. – A P

he father of a British teenager who survived 12 nights in the Australian bush is locked in a feud with his son over the money made from television appearances. Richard Cass, 54, said the relationship with his 19-year-old son Jamie Neale had turned “murderously nasty” over the cash he received for recounting his story. Newspaper reports said Neale received £50,000 (Bt2.8 million) for the television contracts they both signed, but the teenager has yet to hand over Cass’s slice of the money. The north Londoner became lost on July 3 in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

Robbed ‘by my own son’ The fishermen also found the caveman’s “tool kit”, consisting of a hand-axe and flints. However, despite the fact the bone was found under the sea, the man dwelt on land and primarily ate meat, the scientists said. When he lived, the Netherlands and Britain were one land mass.

“I feel I have been robbed by my own son. I was so glad when he was found but it’s gone from being such a feelgood thing to being murderously nasty. Rescued from a playful dolphin A woman swimmer in New Zealand had to be rescued from the sea after an excessively playful dolphin refused to let her return to shore. The exhausted woman was clinging to a buoy offshore from the beach at Mahia on the east coast of the North Island as the dolphin swam around her and prevented her returning to shore. But the woman, who did not want to be named, said there was nothing sinister about the behaviour of the dolphin named Moko, which has become a local celebrity since taking up residence at the beach more than two years ago. The dolphin regularly seeks out swimmers and people in boats to play with. “We were playing around for a while but then when I wanted to go back in, he just wanted to keep playing. I became exhausted and started to panic,” she said. People on the beach heard her screaming and took a row boat out to rescue her. – AFP

Jackie Clune, left, portrays Donna, a single mum preparing for the wedding of her daughter in ‘Mamma Mia!’

e know the music will be delightful – it’s Abba’s. The story will be both hilarious and touching – some of us have seen the movie based on this hit musical. But before we see it live here, we want to know more about the lead actress in “Mamma Mia!” Jackie Clune is the 43-year-old British actress who shot to stardom with solo cabaret and comedy performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “Mamma Mia!”, she says, is “a feminist masterpiece disguised as a great night out” and Donna – her character in the play – is “very interesting”. “She’s feisty, tough and strong, but also funny, warm and vulnerable.” Clune also played the ballet teacher in “Billy Elliot” in the West End before returning to another tour with “Mamma Mia”.

Transcends cultures She loves touring, too. “Last Christmas and New Year in Kuala Lumpur there were lots of Muslims in the audience, and I thought maybe they’d be disapproving of the women in the show or the content of the narrative – Donna is a single mum who slept with three men in the same month! “But at the end they all got up and danced joyously. It was a fantastic coming together of cultures brought about by pop music.” Clune is the author of “Extreme Motherhood: The Triplet Diaries”, which recounts how this former lesbian had a daughter with a male partner, then triplets, before marrying him. “I identify very much with Donna’s sadness at Sophie’s wedding. All I have to do is think of my kids back home missing me and the tears flow.”

Skin that glows When it comes to that radiant look, a solid makeup foundation is crucial By Kupluthai Pungkanon D A I LY X P R E S S

I’ve heard that lack of sleep can make you gain weight. Is that true? Lack of sleep actually wears down your body, and this affects the body’s insulin resistance and increases the chance for metabolic syndrome, which affects the metabolic processes in the body. You tend to see metabolic syndrome in a person who carries fat around his belly. Other studies suggest that lack of sleep creates an imbalance of hormones in our body. Two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, help control the appetite, as well as weight gain and loss. Leptin tells your brain to stop eating, while ghrelin tells it to keep eating. What the studies have found is that people who aren’t getting enough sleep have lower leptin levels and higher ghrelin levels. These unbalanced hormones can cause increased appetite. Thus, those with little sleep tend to consume more calories and gain weight. If you suffer from sleep difficulties and are over 40, you should consider consulting an anti-ageing specialist to find a solution.

FERGIE AND THE CITY Poster of Tevez is just a bit of fun, says Hughes THE GUARDIAN, London

M

ark Hughes has admitted Manchester City were deliberately trying to antagonise Manchester United with their now-infamous Carlos Tevez poster campaign but insisted it was just “a bit of fun” and expressed bemusement about Sir Alex Ferguson’s increasingly hostile attacks on the club. From describing City as “all talk" at the time of their takeover to questioning their summer transfer spending,

Ferguson has become increasingly outspoken about United’s nearest rivals in the last few weeks, culminating in an interview over the weekend in which he branded them a “small club with a small mentality”. The United manager was incensed that City had put up a poster in the city centre showing Tevez, his arms outstretched, above the slogan “Welcome to Manchester” – as if he was new to the city. “All they can talk about is Manchester United…They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff.” Hughes, however, pointed out

there was a banner in place at Old Trafford since 2002 to poke fun at the number of years since City last won a trophy. “33 Years” is draped behind the goal at the Stretford End, and has changeable numbers so it can be updated every year. “The poster campaign in Manchester is a bit of fun between the fans,” Hughes said. “It is in a similar vein as the banner at Old Trafford which counts the time span since City’s last trophy win.” Hughes and his staff regard the fact Ferguson has felt compelled to attack City as a sign that he is taking them more seriously this season.

Low-key home debut for Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo produced only glimpses of his talent during his home debut for Real Madrid in a 1-1 draw with AlIttihad on Sunday. Ronaldo was substituted by Gonzalo Higuain in the 66th minute, immediately after Hicham Aboucherouane equalised for the Saudi Arabian champions in the Peace Cup. Raul Gonzalez gave Madrid the lead at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the 55th minute. The Portugal winger, the world's most expensive player after his ¤94 million (US$133.7 million) transfer from Manchester United, was one of three new signings included in the starting line-up by Madrid’s new Chilean coach, Manuel Pellegrini. The others were striker Benzema and defender Ezequiel Garay. “The changes I made today were planned. I didn’t want Cristiano Ronaldo or Benzema to play more than a hour,” Pellegrini said. – AFP

ormer world champion boxer Vernon Forrest was shot over half a dozen times in the back and killed when he chased one of the thieves during an attempted robbery at a petrol station, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Forrest was shot on Saturday after chasing one of the thieves after they attempted to rob Forrest while he was putting air into the tyres of his Jaguar, the newspaper said. “Everybody is in shock, everybody who knows Vernon or knows about him,” Houston-based trainer Ronnie Shields told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. “He was always a good guy, never did anything to anybody, was respected in the boxing community. This is tough for people to take because of who Vernon was.” The newspaper quoted Atlanta police spokesman Keith Meadow as saying Forrest was also armed and exchanged gunfire with the thieves in the southwest section of the crime-plagued American city. The 11-year-old son of Forrest’s girlfriend was with him at the Chevron station at the time but did not witness the shooting. “Vernon always was the type of guy who wasn’t going to let

He captured the International Boxing Federation welterweight title in 2001 and also became the World Boxing Coucil’s middleweight champion. The 38-year-old Forrest finished with a record of 41 wins, three losses and 29 knockouts. He was named the 2002 Ring

Magazine fighter of the year, the same year he twice defeated Shane Mosley. Forrest was not married but had a 12-yearold son, Vernon Jr. “He was one of the most gracious and charitable fighters in boxing and he will be missed by the entire boxing community,” said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg, who helped organise eight of Forrest’s fights. “Maybe Vernon’s lasting legacy will be for Americans everywhere to rise up and end this kind of senseless violence.”

HE WOULD GIVE YOU THE SHIRT OFF HIS BACK BUT IF YOU TRIED TO TAKE SOMETHING HE WAS GOING TO FIGHT YOU .

Lance Armstrong missed out on an eighth Tour de France crown this year but, say rivals and admirers, his return to cycling's showpiece event has fired the sport's global profile into orbit. The media’s coverage of cycling in the United States is said to be up 80 per cent after Armstrong ended his four-year hiatus to compete in this year’s Tour. After three weeks of epic racing, and a tense co-habitation with Astana team-mate Alberto Contador Armstrong finished third overall at 5minutes 24seconds behind the Spanish ace on Sunday. But in the popularity stakes, seven-time champion Armstrong was unbeatable. Bob Stapleton, team manager of Team Columbia, said: “As far as we are concerned, the more the merrier Lance more than doubled the market here for the cycling audience worldwide. “Audiences are supposed to be up 80 per cent, cycling has been on the front page of most papers in the States for every winner.” AFP

Thai girls lose after putting up tough fight

OUT OF DANGER Massa ‘making progress’ but doctors unsure of damage to eye A P , Budapest

Brazilian Formula One driver Rubens Barrichello of Brawn GP steps out of the Honved Hospital in Budapest where Ferrari driver Felipe Massa is being treated. Right: A car part like the one that hit Massa. hospital doctors were “reassured” after no complications were uncovered by a CT scan. An ultrasound performed on Sunday night to check on internal injuries revealed “nothing that would give cause for concern”. Massa was concussed after a loose car part hit his helmet during a qualifying run on Saturday. Massa then slammed into a protective tyre barrier at

speeds of about 190 kilometres per hour causing multiple skull injuries that were operated on around one hour after being taken from the Hungaroring circuit. F1’s governing body is investigating the crash, which comes amid a string of safety mishaps. Governing body FIA said on Sunday that Fernando Alonso’s Renault team had been “suspended from the next event in the Formula One” champi-

doctor says Felipe Massa’s life is no longer in danger, but that the Ferrari driver sustained an eye injury in his crash which could affect his future in Formula One. Robert Veres, the doctor who performed surgery on Massa after his crash, said yesterday that Massa was stable and remained sedated “to protect his brain”. Veres said Massa had suffered damage to his left eye but didn't “know the quality of this damage”. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo said that Ferrari’s first priority was Massa's health but that the Italian team doesn’t “want to wait too long” to decide on finding a driving replacement. Massa’s health was improving yesterday after the Formula One driver made “passive communication” with doctors, and medical scans provided “positive signs”. Massa was in “life-threatening” but stable condition following surgery on multiple skull injuries sustained during a violent crash in his Ferrari Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Bocskai said that military

onship for failing to advise the two-time world champion that a wheel nut on his front right wheel was not properly secured. The wheel subsequently flew off Alonso’s car and bounced wildly down the track. FIA made the decision after reviewing film and radio recordings of Sunday’s Hungarian GP won by Lewis Hamilton.

Despite putting on a gritty display, Thailand still found themselves at the losing end in a classification match for 13th-16th positions of the FIBA Women's Under-19 World Championship. The Thai girls were beaten 66-55 by South Korea. After a day off on Sunday, the championship got back to business at the Thai-Japan Youth Welfare Centre yesterday, starting with the round featuring teams eliminated from the group stage. The hosts' girls, who finished at the bottom of Group B without a win, came up against the South Koreans, who held a slight physical edge. Having played three group-stage games without seriously testing their rivals, Thailand eventually put up a good fight against the Koreans. “We played well today. So, it’s disappointing we ended up losing again. We’re not at a disadvantage to them, physically. However, our defence and offence were still not as good as them,” said Thongchai Watchanasakdakul, the Thai team coach. The Thai team will now face Tunisia in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon. A day to forget for Ratthapark D A I LY X P R E S S

Thai Honda PTT-SAG Team rider Ratthapark was forced to quit the British Grand Prix after starting from eighth position.

Disaster struck Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot at Donington Park, England, which saw the 250cc Thai rider retire from the race for the first time in his Moto GP career. The 21-year-old Ratthapark was forced to pit at the British Grand Prix after starting from eighth position. The Thai Honda PTT-SAG Team rider did not feel comfortable from the start of the race and leaves for the summer break with a lot in his thoughts about his recent slump in form. The Thai had a

bad start losing six positions in the first lap. With problems changing gears in the slow corners and no confidence with the wet tyres in the drying circuit, Feem decided to enter the pits instead of crashing. It was the worst way to finish the weekend in complicated weather conditions just before the summer break. The 250 World Championship will continue in two weeks at the Brno circuit in Czech Republic. Ratthapark, languishing in the 14th place in the overall standing, was gutted at not be-

ing able to complete the race. “Today is a day to forget, I made a bad start and ended the first lap 14th. After more laps I felt more uncomfortable and could not understand what to do. “This morning we made some adjustments for the rain but I do not know what happened in the race as the bike felt completely different in the drying circuit. After the holidays I hope to have some good luck and get some better results,” said Ratthapark, who will return home tomorrow.
