Impressed The Phet Phasa Foundation (“Gem of the Language Foundation”) has assigned Sak to conduct the workshop. The workshop ran from July 27 to July 29 at the Thailand Cultural Centre. Sak said he was particularly impressed when Aliya, a teacher from Ban Bri Ja School, composed a trilingual song about numbers. The song goes, “One is neung (Thai word for “one”) and it’s satu in Malayu. Two is song (Thai word for “two”) and it’s dwa in Malayu”. Sak believed the workshop would improve teachers’ Thai-language classes in Narathiwat. DAILY

hai-language teachers in Narathiwat have experimented with a novel approach in using songs as a media for teaching. During a three-day workshop earlier this week, 70 teachers were taught to compose songs from readyto-use melody programmes. The programmes prepared melodies based on the local theatrical arts of DK Hulu and Talikipas. “The participating teachers have come up with many interesting songs,” Sak Waeowiriya, the chief of the Thai-language division at Suankularb Wittayalai Nonthaburi School, revealed yesterday. “There are songs that teach Thai vowels, Thai verse, Thai sentence structure and Thai proverbs.”

The Metropolitan Traffic Police chief yesterday warned that jaywalkers would be arrested and fined Bt200 from August 1. Pol Maj-General Veerapat Tansrisakul says that traffic police will fine people who don’t use a pedestrian flyover or a zebra crossing if such facilities are available within a 100-metre radius. Nichkhun of Korean boy band 2PM is ‘honoured’ to present TAT’s ‘Come to Thailand’ campaign in South Korea By Pattarawadee Saengmanee D A I LY X P R E S S

K

orean pop fans are familiar with Nichkhun Horvejkul as a Thai member of Korean boy band 2PM, but from tomorrow they will also know him in another role – as a presenter for Thailand’s tourism campaign. The pop star will appear on Korean television tomorrow in a TV campaign entitled “Come to Thailand, Let’s Take a Break” by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The TV commercial portrays the pop star’s lifestyle as he holidays in Phuket. Fans will see him enjoy fresh seafood on a white beach, dive in a calm turquoise-coloured sea, tee off

and visit intriguing festivals. The Bt25-million campaign is aimed at presenting Thailand’s natural wonders, spectacular attractions and unique culture. TAT officially announced its Come to Thailand campaign on Wednesday. Besides the TV commercial, there is a website www.Nichkhunbreak.com and booklets providing information on Thailand for young tourists. Nichkhun’s Korean fans will also have a chance to join in a lucky draw to win a special trip to Phuket with him, scheduled for October. “This year’s tourism prospects are not bright due to the economic crisis, type-A

(H1N1) flu and the political situation. We’re launching our new campaign ‘Come to Thailand, Let’s Take a Break’ to promote Thailand as a tourist destination with a variety of holiday experiences,” says Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT deputy governor for marketing communications. “As for a new presenter, Nichkhun is the best choice. He’s Thai and has built a reputation as a member of popular band 2PM, so he can communicate directly to our target group and encourage more young people in Korea to discover our country.” Says Nichkhun: “I love Thailand and I feel honoured to be selected by TAT. This is a chance for me to present our unique culture and beautiful tourist attractions. In Korea, I always talk to friends about the

beautiful turquoise sea and delectable food in Thailand.” With Asia – and Thailand – riding a strong wave of K-pop, Nichkhun has become a reputable Thai singer of 2PM. Youngsters are crazy over him and his band mates, so presenting a different culture isn’t going to pose a big problem for him in Korea – after all he believes that music speaks the same language. “Korean fans are cute,” adds Nichkhun. “They gave me a warm welcome though I couldn’t speak Korean at first. My friends helped to teach me Korean and took pains to explain their culture. Now I can speak Korean and understand what my fans are saying – it eliminates the gap between us.”

Police have warned teenagers that they risk being jailed for soliciting for prostitution if they arrange to go on paid dates over the Internet. John Lee Ka-chiu, police director of crime and security, said teenagers could be fined up to HK$10,000 (Bt44,000) and sent to prison for six months, the South China Morning Post newspaper said. “Using a website or chat room to seek or offer sexual services is against the law,” he said. He was commenting on the growing trend of “compensated dating”, where teenagers provide companionship and sex to men in return for gifts and money in deals arranged via the Internet. Police estimate that more than 100 teenage women in Hong Kong are involved in compensated dating. – D P A

hile China grew, North Korea – its Cold War ally – eschewed economic reforms. Now that Beijing is open to the world, the Chinese capital remains North Korea’s primary point of contact with other nations. Beijing would usually be a foreigner’s first stop en route to Pyongyang. The Chinese city has its own extensive North Korea-theme offerings to serve its own community. In the area around the North Korean Embassy north of Ritan Park you’ll see slogan-bearing banners, a threadbare flag, a photomontage of the Kims and other idyllic images of the nation. Inside, you may be met with a surly North Korean who gives unsmiling travel advice. On the wall hang murals of the Kims and copies of the Korean Worker’s Daily, one of many papers that extol the brilliance and abundance of the “Pyongyang Paradise”. Head up the road to Yinpanguan for the city’s best North Korean food. The embassy runs it to help the nation earn hard currency. The menu offers very spicy kimchi, barbecued beef and blueberry soju liquor.

Formerly known as Futon, Goo now comprises founding guitarist Bee, bassist Oh, guitarist Tuen and drummer Simon. “We’re a totally different band from Futon,” Bee insists. “It’s still electro-rock, of course, but darker, more serious – with less comedy.” Futon’s members were known for their witty and sarcastic remarks and the theatricality of lead singer Gene. Goo drives deeper into a subject and is prone to tackle heavier issues like politics and other global maladies.

“I don’t think Obama is that great at all,” Bee says, stinging the US president. “He hasn’t got any power to do what he said he would. He’s just a PR person, and we’ve written a song about that.” Goo is adding the final diatribes to its debut CD and expects to have it out in a few months. “The album sounds really live,” says Bee. “We did most of it in one take, and when you listen to it, it’s really real and really live.” Tomorrow night’s gig at Club NME will be their first live show in town. After that it’s a tour of the city’s other venues, and possibly some shows upcountry. Goo is for hungry people, Bee says.

fter causing quite a stir in Kuala Lumpur a couple of months back, much talked about British babes the Saturdays are now heading to Bangkok. The five girls, who released their debut disc “Chasing Lights” earlier this year, broke on to the British pop scene with their brightly coloured mini-dresses, high heels and hits like “Up”, “Issues”, “If This is Love” and Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough”. The girls fly into town this weekend to meet the Thai press and play a mini-show at Zense Tuesday at 9. The show is by invitation only, though fans can get passes from EasyFM 105.5 and Channel V Thailand.

Before the meet and greet session, member Frankie Sanford, 20, found a few minutes to chat with us on the phone.

What have you been up to? I’m currently on my way to the airport to go to LA to record some music for my next album.

What’s the feedback from your first single? Really good. At least that’s what people have been reporting.

How have you your experiences with S Club Junior helped you with your career? Well, we had boys in the band so it was a little bit different.

Do you plan to release any other cover versions? That’s not something we do often and it was for Comic Relief, a charity over here. But never say never. There might be a really good song that we decide to cover.

Who designs your stage clothes? We have a stylist, so they help us decide what to wear. On my days off I try not to wear makeup and stuff. It’s quite nice just to look a little bit rough.

How has your life changed? It’s really busy. Every day is kind of scheduled out for you. But we’re all used to it now. It’s not like work, its fun!

How do you feel about coming to Bangkok? Really excited; I’ve never been there, so it’ll be a cool experience for me. I can’t wait.

Do you know about Thai food? No, I don’t and I’m quite fussy, so I’ll be interested to see what I find interesting.

Please say something to Thai fans. Hi, we’re really excited about coming out, and we hope that you’re as excited as we are, and that you support us as much as you can. See you soon!

WE’RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT COMING OUT, AND WE HOPE THAT YOU’RE AS EXCITED AS WE ARE.

ave you decided where to chill with drinks tonight? It gets a little harder every weekend when all you get is the same kind of music, same style of clubs and unfortunately, in some cases, the same kind of crowd all over town. So how about staying home tonight? You too can host a wonderful house party with the music of your choice and great drinks that can easily be made at home. Recently Bombay Sapphire’s Global Brand Ambassador, veteran bartender and mixologist Merlin Griffiths jetted into Bangkok to show us some easy yet tasty cocktails based on his favourite ingredient – gin. Forget shiny expensive tools and time-consuming preparations. Griffiths’ cocktails are super easy and quick to make, and with versatile gin you can create many drinks. Try the Sapphire Galangal Collins, a simple mix of gin, tangerine juice, sugar syrup, fresh galangal and soda water. Put the earthy root in the bottom of the

glass, add the rest of the liquid and fill the glass with ice. Top with soda and whatever garnish you fancy. It makes a surprisingly refreshing drink. Or take other fruits or herbs and create your signature drinks. Griffiths uses a few mint leaves to add more fragrance to the old standard of gin and ginger ale. Make sure to only slap the leaves and not crush them or they’ll become bitter and remember to put in a lot of ice. Or

crush 6-8 blueberries in the bottom of a highball glass, fill with fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup, gin, soda water and stacks of ice and you have yourself a Bombay Sapphire Blueberry Collins. “Good cocktails should be made from fresh, premium ingredients,” says Griffiths. “Also it’s where you drink it, and who you’re drinking with. A great drink is also a drink you enjoy with a great company.” Another one, anyone?

GOOD COCKTAILS SHOULD BE MADE FROM PREMIUM INGREDIENTS, ALSO IT’S WHERE YOU DRINK IT,AND WHO YOU’RE DRINKING WITH.

Film history on hold Poy Marnyaporn’s career is on a roll, but being shut out of Poj’s new movie is a golden opportunity lost By Paisarn Likhitpreechakul SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

I

could care less about show-business news, but the squabble between “Bangkok Love Story” director Poj Anont and actress Treechada “Poy” Marnyaporn – the 2004 Miss Tiffany and Miss

International Queen – holds some interest beyond the usual trashiness. It was reported that Poy was eager to be in Poj’s next movie, and he returned the enthusiasm by writing a non-trans role for her, as per her request. Depending on whose side you

hear, they fell out over money or some misunderstanding, and Poj has cast a non-trans actress instead. This is extremely unfortunate because the collaboration would have made history. As far as I know, this would have been the first time anywhere that a transgender played a non-trans leading role. Hollywood puts straight actors in gay and transgender roles all the time, but rarely does the opposite occur, and forget about openly transgender stars. We will surely see many more years of TGs being portrayed in Thai movies as nonsensical comic back-ups, not least in Poj’s own “gems”, but I expect to see her making the transition to better roles. Her breakthrough is a special case because her beauty and poise have earned her many admirers, both male and female – even on the Internet, where homophobia and transphobia is rife. Her romantic relationship is beginning to be viewed with the same equanimity as any heterosexual relationship. In her modelling career, Poy is already in full competition with non-trans women, making appearances to endorse mainstream products. Earlier this year she was a celebrity guest at the launch of Nissan Cube, and most recently the main presenter for G-Net mobile phones. In a country that has yet to see niche marketing aimed at LGBTs, both G-Net and Nissan deserve extra credit for giving Poy an equal opportunity. Their friendly gestures will certainly be appreciated and rewarded by the LGBT community.

American shrugs off previous day’s defeat to return to his record-breaking ways

Sharapova moves into quarters Maria Sharapova rolled over fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-2 in the second round of the 700,000 dollar Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California on Wednesday. Former world No 1 Sharapova needed just over an hour to beat current world No 10 Petrova. In other second round matches, third-seeded and fourth-ranked Elena Dementieva beat Maria Kirilenko, 6-1 6-2 and Daniela Hantuchova upset seventh-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 46 7-6 (8/6) 6-1 in a two hour, 30 minutes match. Samantha Stosur downed Monica Niculescu, 6-1 7-5 in earlier second round action. – AP

Phillies rope in Lee from Indians Looking for an ace to bolster their so-so rotation, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired Cliff Lee on Wednesday from the Cleveland Indians, who traded the reigning pitcher of the year for the second straight season. The World Series champion Phillies gave Cleveland four minor league prospects for Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco. The National League East-leading Phillies sent Triple-A pitcher Carlos Carrasco, infielder Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson along with Single-A pitcher Jason Knapp to Cleveland. – AP

Everton spur Man City offer Manchester City’s attempts to sign Joleon Lescott from Everton are floundering after an improved offer was rejected by the Premier League rival. An 18 million-pound (US$30 million) bid for the England defender was turned down by the Toffees despite being 3 million pounds higher than a previous offer earlier this month. Everton said Thursday that the “offer has been rejected outright”. City is keen to add the versatile Lescott to its expensive new squad after failing to sign John Terry from Chelsea. City manager Mark Hughes did

sign centre back Kolo Toure from Arsenal for 14 million pounds on Wednesday. – AP

Mickelson to play in PGA Championship Phil Mickelson confirmed Wednesday that he will take part in the season's fourth and final major championship. Tiger Woods, who is tuning up for the PGA Championship by competing in this week’s Buick Open, said Mickelson’s participation in next month’s PGA Championship is a sign things are improving at home. The three-time major champion Mickelson took two months off because his wife and mother are both battling breast cancer. – AFP

ichael Phelps had another swimsuit issue. It didn’t slow him down this time. Phelps bounced back from a stunning loss with something more familiar – a world record in the 200-metre butterfly on Wednesday. For good measure, he surpassed another of Mark

Spitz’s accomplishments with the 34th world record of his career, one more than Spitz had during his brilliant run in the pool. One night after he was soundly beaten by Germany's Paul Biedermann, Phelps sliced the time in what he calls his “bread and butter” to 1 minute, 51.51 seconds, more than a halfsecond lower than his gold

medal-winning time of 1:52.03 at the Beijing Olympics. With all the hullabaloo over swimsuits, everyone wondered about Phelps’s decision to wear one that stretched only from his waist to his ankles, leaving his upper body bare. Was he trying to make a fashion statement? “No, that didn’t even cross my mind,” Phelps said. “It was

Alonso set to leave Liverpool Submits formal transfer request amid prospects of being signed up by Real Madrid THE GUARDIAN,

just me being comfortable.” Actually, he had planned to wear a Speedo bodysuit, only to discover during warmups the one he brought to the Foro Italico was too tight in the shoulders. So he went back to the legsuit, which he prefers in the fly anyway. Phelps went out much faster than he normally does in the fly, and paid for it on the final push to the wall. His arms were burning. His legs, too. But there was no way he was losing again. He surged to the wall a body length ahead of silver medallist Pawel Korzeniokski of Poland, with Japan’s Takeshi Matsuda settling for bronze. Phelps whipped around quickly to see his time and held up his right index finger when the “WR” was posted. On Tuesday, he was blown out of the water by Germany’s Paul Biedermann, who routed Phelps

in the 200 freestyle and also snatched away his world record. Most of the talk afterward was about what they were wearing – and there wasn’t a red carpet in sight. Biedermann was in a polyurethane Arena X-Glide suit, which everyone concedes produces much faster times than Phelps’s year-old Speedo LZR Racer. “I’ve always done well in it,” he said. “I guess you can call it my bread and butter event.” There couldn't have been a more appropriate place for Phelps to add another record to his resume. Shortly after he climbed from the pool, Italy's Federica Pellegrini sent the home crowd into a frenzy when she set the 20th world mark of the four-day-old meet in the 200 freestyle. Biedermann and Pellegrini have been the stars of these worlds.

Xabi Alonso has opened the door to a potential move to Real Madrid by submitting a formal transfer request at Liverpool, acccording to reports. Real have made no secret of their interest in buying Alonso this summer, but until now the midfielder had refused to show his own hand. According to the Liverpool Echo, however, he has now submitted a formal written request. Rafael Benitez has always insisted that he is keen to hold on to Alonso, and held talks with the midfielder during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, but may now be forced to sell. Real president Florentino Perez described the 27-yearold Alonso as a crucial target yesterday, saying: “It is fundamental that we sign Xabi Alonso. He is a key player to our project.” The Madrid club had an initial offer of 24 million pounds rejected earlier this

summer, but are now expected to return with an improved bid that is closer to Liverpool’s 30-million valuation. Such a fee would present a significant profit on a player who cost Liverpool 10.7 million when they signed him from Real Sociedad in 2004.

Ribery: Munich say no to 80-million-euro offer.

Bayern rejected Real bid for Ribery

Bayern rout Milan Bayern Munich humiliated Italian giants AC Milan 4-1 on Wednesday as they set up an Audi Cup final date with English champions Manchester United. A double from promising youngster Thomas Muller and a goal apiece from German international midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Frenchman Saer Sene saw Bayern to an ultimately easy victory over Milan. The Italian side saw their only goal come courtesy of a howler by Bayern ’keeper Michael Rensing, who let a tame freekick from Andrea Pirlo slip through his arms into the goal.

Bayern Munich turned down a bid of 80 million euros (US$112 million) from Real Madrid for its winger Franck Ribery, according to a French newspaper report. Sports daily L’Equipe reported yesterday that the Spanish team made the offer three weeks ago, but that Bayern’s chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and Bayern manager Uli Hoeness rejected it. No further details were given. Earlier this month, the 26year France winger said he wanted to leave Bayern to join Madrid, which has recruited heavily since Florentino Perez’s return as president. Two weeks ago, Bayern threatened to report Madrid to Fifa, world football’s governing body, if it continued its aggressive pursuit of Ribery. Several comments by Zinedine Zidane, who is a special adviser to Perez and is close to Ribery, appeared to irk the German team. Ribery’s contract is due to expire in 2011. He has scored 20 league goals in 53 games for Bayern.

even-time world champion Michael Schumacher is making a sensational return to Formula One, Ferrari announced on Wednesday. The German motor racing legend, who retired in 2006, will replace injured Felipe Massa in the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23, and possibly for the remainder of the season. “The Ferrari-Marlboro team plans to give Michael Schumacher Felipe Massa’s car until the Brazilian returns to competition,” Ferrari announced in a statement on its website carried by Italian news agency Ansa. The statement added: “Michael Schumacher says he is available and in the

coming days he will pursue a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the European Grand Prix.” Schumacher, 40, commented: “Ultimately I like challenges and this is a great challenge.” “The important thing is that Massa gets better,” he continued, adding that he “just wanted to help the firm [Ferrari] when Michael Schumacher motivated by ‘great challenge’. they needed it”. Though a daunting task awaits Thailand in the first-leg Pool B preliminaries in Kielce here, head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai is keeping his fingers crossed that his players will spring a surprise. Thailand will kick off their 2009 World Grand Prix campaign today when they pit their expertise against hosts Poland in the Pool B curtainraisers. Last year, the Thai squad stunned the Poles and their fans in a hard-fought five-set thriller. “It’s not easy to beat any team in this year’s World Grand Prix as all of them are the world’s elite teams such as Brazil, Russia and China. Here in Pool B, we have to play Japan, the Netherlands and Poland and expectations cannot be that high as well,” Kiattipong commented. “Last year, we beat Poland as they rested some best players for the Beijing Olympics. “This time, they may field fullstrength team.

“To beat them is not an easy mission. However, we are also training harder than ever for this premier tournament. To accomplish our goal, we have no way to go but up. I believe that my girls can spring a surprise here. Every team expects only wins and we also expect the same thing.” Today, Thailand play Poland at 4.30pm local time (9.30pm Bangkok time) before going up against Asian champions Japan at 7pm local time (midnight) tomorrow. They will end the Pool B contest with the biggest challenge against the 2007 champions the Netherlands at 7pm (midnight) on Sunday. The official press conference for the WGP preliminaries Pool B competition was held yesterday at the 3,000-seater Hola Legionow, the main venue for the three-day first leg here in Poland. Thailand’s possible line-up for the opening match against Poland: Captain Wilavan Apinyapong, setter Nusara Tomkom, Pleumjit Thinkaow, Onuma Sittirak, Malika Kanthong, Tapaphaipun Chaisri and libero Wanna Buakaew.

German comes out of retirement to take Massa’s place in Ferrari team

South Korea’s Ted Oh and Australia’s Gavin Flint both shot a seven-under 64 to share the lead after the first round at the Brunei Open yesterday. Veterans Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand and Taiwan’s Lu Chien-soon rolled back the years with 65s to take a share of third place with Singapore’s Mardan Mamat. Oh, who is looking to notch his first Asian Tour win at the Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei, said his confidence was soaring after his first round success. Boonchu, 53, proved that age is no barrier to success with a sparking performance that included seven birdies against just one bogey despite a hand injury. “My palm was hurting a little when I started practising today. Fortunately the greens were soft and I didn’t have to exert too much strength when putting,” said the Thai veteran, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour. AFP, Bandar Seri Begawan
