The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has invited readers to the globe’s largest floating book exhibition on the world’s oldest ocean-going passenger ship, the MV Doulos, at Khlong Toei Port 1. The exhibition is on till August 23.

On-board reading and entertainment BMA Public Relations Department chief Saensuk Satongkhun said yesterday that the 130-metre vessel, operated by the non-profit charity organisation Good Books for All, was on its fifth visit to Thailand. Besides 8,000 titles of books in English and other languages plus the historic vessel to discover, the public can experience numerous cultures on board, enjoy stage performances and English-learning activities by some 300 volunteer crew members from 50 countries, she said. Together with its mission as a mobile-knowledge centre, the vessel also organises social-service activities in which books, medicines and consumer goods are donated and community buildings such as churches or schools built or repaired, she added. The floating exhibition is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 9pm and on Sundays and Mondays from 2pm to 9pm. Entrance is free for those under 16, while adults will need to pay Bt10 per head. lympic hero Vorapoj Phetkoom risks losing his chance to shine at the next Olympic Games following his appearance in a gay magazine. “If I am banned from boxing for one year, I may have to give up my hope of competing in the 2012 Olympics,” Vorapoj admits. In his late 20s, the brawny boxer posed recently for Stage magazine. In some of the photos, he wears just underwear.

Faces ABAT questioning Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) president General Thaweep Jantharoj insists Vorapoj’s appearance is not appropriate. “We will ques-

tion him. After we listen to him, we will mete out punishment,” Thaweep says. He laments that Vorapoj, a well-educated and mature man, should have known what he should do and what he should not. Aside from his boxing regime, Vorapoj has been pursuing a master degree. Speaking on “Joh Jai” TV programme, the boxer explained that he had agreed to appear in Stage because he initially did not know it was a magazine for gay men. “I thought it was

an honour to be invited to grace the cover of a magazine on its third anniversary,” Vorapoj says. He says he was initially told that the theme would be about muscle and sports. However, he sensed something was wrong as soon as he stepped onto the fashion set.

Smelling a fish “I became sceptical when I was told to wear just underpants,” Vorapoj says. “I protested but the team said everything was going to be okay because it would show my abdomen muscles.” The boxer says he asked whether he could quit the shoot. “But the

team said I would have to pay compensation.” He said the magazine gave him Bt15,000 for the job. Vorapoj also dismisses a report that his finances are so bad that he needs to appear in a gay magazine for money. Following his silver medal win at the Olympic Games five years ago, he reaped more than Bt10 million in rewards. “I am not in financial trouble at all,” Vorapoj insists. “My gold rewards are kept in safety boxes. I still have the money, motorcycle and car given to me.” He adds that he is running a resort in Surat Thani, too. Asked whether he is gay, Vorapoj says emphatically, “No! I have a girlfriend.” >> Catch Vorapoj on the “Joh Jai” programme on August 6, Channel 5.

Aussie family sues KFC after daughter becomes ill

An Australian family sued KFC yesterday, claiming their daughter became brain damaged and crippled after eating a chicken wrap tainted with salmonella. Their lawyer told the New South Wales Supreme Court in an opening statement there was no doubt that Monika Samaan, then 7, developed salmonella poisoning from a chicken wrap bought from a KFC outlet in Sydney in 2005.

A New York City woman who says she can’t find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor’s degree. Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27-yearold is seeking the $70,000 (Bt2.3 million) she spent on tuition. Thompson says she’s been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April. She says the Bronx school’s Office of Career Advancement hasn’t provided her with the leads and career advice it promises. Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank says Thompson’s lawsuit is completely without merit. The college insists it helps its graduates find jobs. – AP

No doubt about salmonella: lawyer “There is little or no doubt that chicken was reported by all scientists, at the time of these unhappy events occurring, as being the source of that salmonella,” lawyer Anthony Bartley said. Officials for KFC, which is operated by Louisville, Kentuckybased Yum Brands, could not immediately be reached for comment. The girl, now 11, attended court in a wheelchair. Bartley said she had acquired spastic quadriplegia and an intellectual disability since the poisoning. Bartley said the court would hear “disturbing and quite unsettling” evidence about the practices in KFC kitchens during the trial.

Barrage of criticism Disc jockey Kyle Sandilands was accused of further insensitivity when he then asked: “Right, and is that the only sexual experience you’ve had?” His co-host then stepped in and ended the segment. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd led a barrage of criticism from

psychologists, broadcasters, child protection and rape crisis groups. “This is really off. It’s wrong, shouldn’t be done,” Rudd said. The New South Wales state government ordered child welfare officers and police to investigate the girl’s rape claim. Sandilands, who is a judge on the reality singing TV show Australian Idol, apologised but said he had “no idea” about the girl’s past.

Beware of humming A row over “loud humming” on a train in southwest China span out of control and led to the fatal stabbing of two passengers. A man identified by his surname Yan was humming along to his CD player on a train from Kunming to Chengdu, causing three other passengers to complain he was being “too loud and disruptive”. The three reportedly wrestled Yan to the floor and were beating him when he pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed all three. One died on the train, while another died in hospital. The third was hospitalised and now out of danger. Yan was detained by police on the train. Violent crime is rare in China, partly because firearms are hard to get hold of. – AFP

cotland is known around the world for bagpipes, Scotch whisky, haggis and tartan kilts. But now it is trying to protect a less obvious Scottish treasure: chicken tikka masala. A chef from Glasgow claims he invented the curry dish, and is pressing the European Union to give it “Protected Designation of Origin” status, alongside the likes of Champagne, Parma Ham and Greek Feta cheese. The Ali family, owners of Shish Mahal restaurant in Glasgow, said they came up with the creamy, mildly spicy curry in the 1970s to please the Scots, but then it went on to become the most popular dish in British restaurants. “Chicken tikka masala was

So from here we cooked chicken tikka with the sauce that contains yogurt, cream, spices.” Although it is difficult to prove definitively where it originated, the dish is generally regarded as a curry adapted to suit Western tastes. And a Glasgow lawmaker has taken steps to gain EU legal protection for the curry, that recognises it as a local speciality. “Tikka masala is perhaps one of the earliest examples of the

Sudanese journalist facing 40 lashes for wearing “indecent” trousers vowed on the eve of her judgement that she is ready to be whipped 40,000 times in her bid to change the country’s harsh laws. Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, who works for the media department of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, is to be judged today after waiving the immunity granted to UN workers. She is to be judged under Article 152 of Sudanese law, which promises 40 lashes for anyone “who commits an indecent act which violates public morality or wears indecent clothing”. Hussein, who is in her 30s and whose husband died of kidney failure, said: “I’m ready for anything to happen. I’m absolutely not afraid of the verdict.” “If I’m sentenced to be whipped, or to anything else, I will appeal. I will see it through to the end, to the constitutional court if necessary,” Hussein said. “And if the constitutional court says the law is constitutional, I’m ready to be whipped not 40 but 40,000 times.” Hussein invited scores of journalists to her first court hearing on Wednesday, when she wore the same clothes she was arrested in – mossgreen slacks with a loose floral top and green headscarf.

modern fashion for fusion cuisine,” said MP Mohammad Sarwar, who tabled a motion in the House of Commons last month calling for EU protection.

‘True British dish’ Supporters of the campaign point to the fact that former foreign minister Robin Cook once described it as a crucial part of British culture. “Chicken tikka masala is now a true British national dish, not only because it is the most popular, but because it is a perfect illustration of the way Britain absorbs and adapts external influences,” Cook said in a 2001 speech. If London decides to support the campaign and send a request to the European Commission, the body will, as a next step, examine whether the application is admissible.

China bans bad breath in space Bad breath is enough to fail the test to enter China’s manned space programme – but the final green light for blast-off is given by the hopeful astronaut’s wife. China only wants to send the best of the best into orbit, meaning unfortunate personal smell is sufficient reason to get disqualified right away, the Sina.com website reported. “Bad body odour will affect the colleagues in the narrow confines of a space shuttle,” said Shi Binbin, a doctor with the 454th Air Force Hospital in Nanjing. A runny nose is also a definite obstacle to joining China’s space race for much the same reason, according to the report. The hospital recently completed a rigorous first screening of candidates, who had to satisfy 100 requirements. Discarded early in the process were those with scars – as they may burst open in the extreme conditions in space, the report said. AFP

Goddess librarian “It’s about making a dream world come to life,” says Zhang Li, a 23-yearold librarian from Nanjing who’s dressed as a goddess. She’s competed for five years, but until last year kept it a secret from her

parents, who are teachers and very strict. But then she won the Chinese championships and needed their permission to go to Japan. “They got angry,” she says, “but they were pleased when I came second. Now they allow it as long as it doesn’t disrupt my life.” Then Zhang steps onstage and magically repels sword blows with her bare hands. In competitions the teams – which can range from one or two people to 100 – are judged above all on their costumes, but secondly on props, choreography and audience reaction. Cosplay resonates in China because the pressure to perform in school means childhood is often deferred, says Sun Yunwei, a cosplay judge from Shanghai Digital Content, an industry promotion agency. “As junior- and highschool students they don’t have time to develop these interests,” Sun says. “But when they go to college, every university has an anime club, so the students can invest time and effort and money into it.”

Zhao Jing, 23, right, was among the cosplay competitors during the seventh China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference – or ChinaJoy – in Shanghai.

A pianist plays newly discovered pieces by Mozart A F P , Salzburg, Austria

T

wo piano pieces thought to be composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a child were performed on Sunday for the first time since being rediscovered. The impressive pieces, a four-minute concerto for piano and a oneminute prelude, were composed around 1763 when the prodigy was just seven or eight years old, the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg said. They were found in a music book belonging to Mozart’s sister Nannerl, in the foundation's archives. Until now, all 18 scores in the music book had been attributed to Mozart’s father Leopold or unknown composers. But two compositions near the end of the book were “in all probability, bordering on certainty” the works of the young Mozart.

They were performed on Sunday by clavichordist Florian Birsak on Mozart’s own fortepiano at the family’s old Salzburg residence for the media. A public performance with orchestration is set for next January’s Mozart Week in Salzburg. The two pieces were unusually difficult at the time and their breakneck speed was not typical of Leopold’s work, says researcher Ulrich Leisinger. “This was a young musician running riot in order to show what he was capable of. Moreover, the piece contains real technical mistakes in composition as well as clumsy elements that never would have happened to an old hand like Leopold.” >> ON THE WEB You can hear the two new pieces at www.Mozarteum.at.

Creation of a cover girl Don’t get scalped!

Forget Photoshop, you can look ready for a photo shoot just by the careful application of makeup By Kupluthai Pungkanon D A I LY X P R E S S

Every woman needs several different types of hairbrushes, say the experts THOROUGH HAIR CARE requires several different kinds of brushes and when buying a brush it’s important to consider how it feels on the scalp. “There are excellent all-purpose brushes that are perfect for daily brushing,” says Marlies Moeller, a hair stylist in Hamburg, Germany. “However, they are not sufficient for massaging or a specific kind of styling.” Round brushes in two or three sizes are needed when using a hair dryer to style the hair. In addition a small brush is a useful item to keep in a handbag. Moeller says price shouldn’t be the first concern when buying a hairbrush. “A good hair brush sits well in the hand, and high quality brushes, such as those with wild boar bristles, massage the scalp,” she says. “There’s no comparison between this and a cheap plastic brush.” According to Moeller, plastic brushes damage the scalp when used over a long period of time and roughen the hair shaft. High quality hair brushes are expensive, “but they have a longer life and your hair and scalp will thank you for using them.”

Brushes are essential tools for this look. For the ’80s woman-in-control look, lip liner is key and you’ll have to form the lip rather than just outline it. Last but not least, the face is constructed and formed with foundations and cream. For “Sculpture Club”, say the experts, you need to think surgery without the plastic. This style requires some sculpting, highlighting, and contouring at its most advanced and again, the brush is an essential tool.

Getting into gear Car computer systems are slowly catching up and may soon pass other gadgets

IN THIS DAY AND AGE, where mobile phones can outcompute laptops, refrigerators have an Internet connection and the television gives the PC a run for its money, technology systems in cars look positively dated. Development cycles and problems transmitting mobile data have held back those systems until now, says Ralf Guido Herrtwich, a designer with Mercedes Benz. But no more. Now it’s time to catch up. Indeed, it won't be long before navigation systems can look even further afield, infotainment systems can be online more regularly, all while the systems are getting easier to use. Also, your car might learn to talk. To that end, Mercedes wants to store all navigation and infotainment data online, meaning the car will only access the data as necessary. Indeed, the myCommand system, planned for a 2015 release, shouldn’t just solve the development cycle and help cars keep pace with the entertainment system, it should also be able to offer additional features. Navigation systems, for example, will become more up-to-date and informative. New maps will be merged with satellite images and pictures while the map will be linked to a databank with real-time information about gas prices or the number of free spaces in a nearby parking garage. Additionally, the music system should be able to broadcast all stations available via web radio. On top of that, voice over Internet protocol will drop the price of telephoning and technology leaps will allow back-seat passengers to surf the Net. To make sure drivers will be able to use all these functions, companies are working on new, dual-view display technologies, already available in the Mercedes S class and coming soon to the Jaguar XJ. The new special Mini model, Camden, will come with a so-called Mission Control that can react to 120 actions with a menu of 1,500 comments. The repertoire extends from a greeting to an explanation of the automatic start-stop system to a reminder not to forget to feed the meter. “Of course it sounds like a game,” says designer Fabrice Baradoux. “But those who sticks to it will drive more safely and economically.” Deutsche Presse-Agentur

ASTROLOGY

Today’s Birthday: It’s all about give-and-take this year. The more motivated you are to collect old debts and bend over backwards to help someone with something to offer in return, the better off you will be in the end. Focus on what counts and not on the little things.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

ARIES **** March 21-April 19 Take a lead position and do something nice for someone. Your kindness will rub off and positive action will bring great results. Don’t let someone you love stifle your feel-good attitude. TAURUS ** April 20-May 20 Refrain from getting caught in an argument that isn’t your fight. Serve your own interests by getting involved in a learning process or travelling to visit an old friend or lover. GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 A judgement call will show your ability to take action but will also give the impression that you lack tolerance. Give a step-by-step evaluation in order to keep your thoughts out in the open. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 Partnership issues will raise concerns regarding loyalty and future intentions. Clear the air before it’s too late. Uncertainty regarding your domestic responsibilities must be cleared up.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 You must stay within your financial means, regardless of what others decide to do. Time is money and the more you do that is productive, the better off you will become. VIRGO ***** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Put more time and effort into your home, family, friendships and personal gains. You can master a skill or start a new hobby. A responsibility you have can turn into a plus if you use your experience. LIBRA ** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Hold back any thoughts that may lead to personal confrontations. Let things ride and observe how everyone else reacts. A pushy individual can cause you grief if you stand in the line of fire. SCORPIO **** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Stick to practical applications but don’t lose sight of your goals. Don’t give in to threats or believe everything you are told. Someone you love can make an impact on the way you do things financially. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Acceptance will be the key to your getting what you want. You have to abide by rules and listen to superiors. Travel plans will be costly or will set you back for other reasons. Stick to a budget. CAPRICORN *** Dec. 22-Jan. 19 Use common sense to get your way. You can cut a deal with someone you want to do business with or make a financial move that will ensure that your money works for you.

Daniel Dae Kim

Singer Frankie Ford is 70. Actor-comedian Richard Belzer is 65. Actor Billy Bob Thornton is 54. Actress Kym Karath is 51. Actress Lauren Tom is 50. Producer Michael Gelman is 48. Actor Daniel Dae Kim is 41. Singer-actor Marques Houston of Immature is 28. Actors Dylan and Cole Sprouse are 17.

AQUARIUS *** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Your honesty, coupled with kindness and compassion, will be what counts in the end. Minor mishaps or accidents at home can be expected. Fix whatever needs to be dealt with quickly. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 Keep your thoughts to yourself and you’ll avoid being pulled into a situation that can set you back. A love relationship can be reinforced if you discuss your plans for the future.

British Open winner gives mums hope Catriona Matthew gave golfing mothers everywhere a massive boost with her three-stroke victory on Sunday in the Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham, England. She felt her victory was terrific news for women with two children. Both her children, and her husband who caddied for her, were with her this week. Karrie Webb of Australia took second place with 288 after a closing 68 that gave her hope for a while. with a 20-under 268 total at Warwick Hills, which hosted its first Buick Open in 1958 and seemed to stage its final one on Sunday. Woods, whose previous three wins this year were each by one shot, spent much of Sunday ahead by two before he took a three-stroke lead with the birdie at No 16. His businesslike final round included three birdies and no

He will play at the Bridgestone Invitational this week before going to Hazeltine for the PGA Championship, his final chance to win a major this year. “I feel good,” Woods said. “The win helps.” Woods won the Buick Open for a third time and claimed his

always been special, but today was something else.” He acknowledged thinking about his walk up 18 at Warwick Hills being his last, leading to him throwing his ball with a lot of velocity back down the fairway to fans. He also tossed a ball into the gallery at 17. “I never do that, but today was different,” Woods said. “We aren’t coming back here, and I wanted to thank all these people.” GolfWeek Magazine reported on its website that General Motors Co would end the PGA Tour’s longest partnership. “Hopefully, we’ll get back to this region soon,” Woods said. He improved to 36-1 when he has the outright lead after 54 holes. Woods has four wins this season. Roland Thatcher (64), Greg Chalmers (68) and John Senden (70) tied for second.

iverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is keen for his future to be sorted out one way or the other as the long-running transfer saga regarding a possible move to Real Madrid continues to drag on. Alonso is wanted by Madrid but the Spanish giants have so far been unwilling to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the Euro 2008 winner, which is in the region of 30 million euros, and have had a 24-million offer rejected. Liverpool’s managing director, Christian Purslow, met with the Madrid executive director, Josa Angel Sanchez, in Barcelona yesterday to discuss Alonso, with the Reds in the city for a friendly against Espanyol. Alonso, who has handed in a formal transfer request, was unaware of the meeting but was quoted as telling Spanish newspaper AS: “It’s reassuring to know that

Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now. “I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening. My stance has been clear, as you all know. I’m a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse.”

THE GUARDIAN,

Aston Villa overcame Italian giants Juventus to win the Peace Cup on penalties on Sunday after both sides had failed to score at the end of extra time. The Italians, who beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Friday's semi-final, put Martin O'Neill's upand-coming team under intense pressure in a fast-paced game, played in the southern Spanish city of Seville, in which both sides failed to convert a host of chances. In the end, Carlos Cuellar scored for Villa while Nicola Legrottaglie missed the last spot-kick to give the English Premier League side a 4-3 win on penalties. Villa keeper Brad Guzan stopped a lame shot from Italian legend Alessandro del Piero and also saved from Vincenzo Iaquinta while Steve Sidwell and Chris Herd failed to score their penalties for Villa. The Premier League side were without England striker Emile Heskey who was suspended after picking up a red card in the 2-1 semi-final win over Porto.

hailand found the Netherlands too strong and went down fighting in a dramatic four-set thriller in the last preliminary Pool B match of the FIVB World Grand Prix here in Poland. Despite the 27-25 21-25 17-25 20-25 loss to the Dutchwomen on Sunday night, Thailand had much to be proud about their efforts. Showing remarkably improved form at the world’s premier women’s volleyball tournament, they were the only team to snatch a set from the formidable Dutch , who were champions in 2007 and are current world No 15. Despite a height disadvantage – the average Thai height is 176cm against the Netherlands’ 185cm – the Kindom’s girls defied all odds by stunning their rivals 27-25 in the opening set. The Netherlands, strengthened by the fired-up Manon Flier, who won the Most Valuable Player award in 2007, regrouped and hit back aggressively to capture the remaining three sets 25-21 25-17 25-20. As expected, the

Netherlands made a clean sweep in Pool B, winning all their three matches for full six points. They finished second with five points from two wins against one loss.

Hosts Poland, who overpowered Asian champions Japan 25-20 26-24 27-25 in their last match, finished third with four points, with Japan in fourth place with three points from three losses.

“The Netherlands are much taller and stronger than us. Their blocking and counter-attack are exceptional. They also played well, refraining from making any unforced mistakes. “We had to work hard to win points from our rivals. It’s not easy to beat the Netherlands. I think their chance to make it to the final six teams in the World Grand Prix finals in Tokyo is very bright,” Thai head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai said. Thailand and Poland next join world No 1 and Beijing Olympic champions Brazil, and Asian powerhouse China to compete in the Pool E preliminaries in Macau from August 7-9.

Bartoli outlasts Williams Venus Williams was upset by Marion Bartoli 6-2 5-7 6-4 in the final of the Bank of the West Classic on Sunday in Stanford, California for her first title on American soil. The eighth-seeded Bartoli, who lost in last year’s final, played a steady match against the second-seeded Williams and will likely move up two places into 12th when the next world rankings are released. Williams is expected to remain third. “Venus is one of the greatest champions ever,” Bartoli said. “That’s what I practice for, to play her. To beat her is even better.” Bartoli recalled days of scraping away snow in her native France to practice tennis with her father and coach. “It would be zero degrees outside and we'd sweep off the snow just to practice,” said Bartoli, who earned US$107,000 for the win. “People would say I wouldn’t be any good at tennis if I let my dad [Dr Walter Bartoli] coach me. That was about the time Venus was just starting out and coached by her dad. She went on to become No 1. That helped me develop mental toughness.” “Marion played really well,” Williams said. “I couldn’t find my game. I was fighting myself a lot and I couldn’t find the court. I’m not used to that.” AP

Thailand’s Phenek Karakhet celebrates with his gold medal in the men’s flyweight final.

Thailand’s taekwondo team continued their fruitful campaign in the inaugural Asian Martial Arts Games, claiming two more medals, including a gold via Phenek Karakhet at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium yesterday. Phenek might be unknown to home fans ahead of the tournament but the 19-year-old became the toast of the crowd after seeing off his old foe from South Korea in the men’s flyweight final.

Having made a relatively easy run to the gold-medal bout in which he scored two RSC victories, Phenek battled through pain in his left foot against his Korean opponent. However, he managed to edge out the Korean 1-0, clinching the country’s second gold. “I didn’t set any target for the event. I just wanted to do my best. I was out of the ring for more than a year because of the misunderstanding between me and the association [The Taekwondo Association of

Thailand]. I almost quit the sport. “However, I got a second chance. That made me more determined while training. “I’m really delighted to win the gold. I’ll concentrate on my training to become the first choice in the division for the national team,” said a delighted Phenek. Flyweight Prapaporn Sangnarin had her campaign cut short in the women’s semi-finals where she went down 2-0 to Korean opponent. She claimed a bronze.
