year after the new filmcensor law came into effect, ten movies have been banned from theatres, including “Frontiere”, “Halloween”, “Funny Games”, “Zack and Mari Make Porno” and “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”, as they were deemed violent and against good virtues, a senior official at the Culture Ministry revealed yesterday. licences by September or face up to Bt1 million in fines. Pradit said that the new Film and Video Act 2008 has been in effect since June 2008 but its five subordinate laws were delayed and had just been approved by the Cabinet, leading to many problems.

‘Violent, amoral content’ However, since it came into effect, ten mostly foreign films were banned from being screened in Thailand because most had violent and amoral content, he said. He cited a film about a male house guest

who later killed the homeowner as an example that went against the Thai value of gratitude.

Upto Bt1-million fine Pradit also said the 2008issued ministerial regulations on theatre licences came into effect from July 27 this year, so operators must apply for a licence within 60 days. He warned that those who failed to meet the deadline might be subjected to a fine ranging from Bt200,000 to Bt1 million and a Bt10,000 daily fine until a licence is obtained. Pradit’s comment was made after the opening ceremony of a seminar yesterday at The Emerald Hotel. At the same event, Assistant Culture

Minister Suriya Suksakit told reporters that the ministry was well aware of public concerns about children being allowed to play computer games for more than three hours a day.

Watching the gamers He said that the ministry could not put the three-hour limit into effect due to a shortage of personnel overseeing law inforcement; also, the law couldn’t apply to certain types of games. He, therefore, proposed the installation of security cameras at game shops to allow a centre assigned by each province – possibly the provincial cultural office – to supervise gameplaying limits in real time and via remote control.

THE CAMPAIGN AIMS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF BOOKS PEOPLE READ ANNUALLY FROM 5 TO 10 AND PROVIDE QUALITY READING CENTRES. The campaign, spearheaded by the Committee for Reading Promotion Towards a Life-Long Learning Society, aims to increase the number of books people read annually from 5 to 10 by 2012 and to provide good quality reading centres in all tambons, he says. By 2012, the working population’s “daily practical literacy rate” should also be hiked from 92.64 per cent to 99 per cent, while the literacy rate among those aged over 15 should be increased from 92.64 per cent to 95 per cent, he adds. The committee, chaired by Jurin, will meet soon to set the strategy and activities for each year and get related agencies to participate in the mission.

ura Nari Witthaya School’s Marching and Show Band yesterday received Bt500,000 from the government for its outstanding success at the recent World Music Contest. Held every four years, the contest is recognised as the most significant international festival for wind and brass instruments.

Scoring 95 per cent The Sura Nari Witthaya School band was declared the Top of the World Champions in the display category with a score of 95.03 per cent. The score was the highest, and the band won a long, loud applause from the audience. The band outperformed all others in the marching category, too, winning a gold medal following a score of 88.17 per cent. The 16th Music World Contest ran from July 9 to August 2 in The Netherlands. “We are deeply delighted and

proud,” says Issarawadee Pipatponkai of the band. “We would like to thank all Thais and every organisation that has supported us.” Sura Nari Witthaya School director Silapasit Taptimtongchai says the band had been practising for more than a year for the contest. The school is a girls-only institute. Its band members are of course girls – with one exception: the only boy in the group is a music student from Chulalongkorn University, who wished to join in. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva welcomed the band at Government House yesterday morning, and the group surprised the premier by playing “Happy Birthday”. Abhisit turned 45 on Monday. The premier, meanwhile, was in high spirits all the time. After handing out T-shirts sporting the words “I Love Thailand” and a book about himself, Abhisit also gave the band Bt500,000 on behalf of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court sentenced an Australian man to death yesterday after he was arrested at the Suvarnabhumi Airport while trying to smuggle 2.497 kilograms of heroin to Sydney. The sentence was lowered to life imprisonment due to his useful confession. The defendant, Andrew Hood, 35, was arrested on December 16 last year at the departure area’s checkpoint after he was found to have wrapped the heroin packs around his body and legs. He reportedly confessed that he was asked by a compatriot to take the narcotics to Sydney.

A helicopter releases water to extinguish a fire which was set by striking workers to block riot police from storming the compound of the Ssangyong Motors plant in Pyeongtaek yesterday. South Korean police commandos mounted a dramatic helicopter-borne raid to end a sit-in by strikers at the troubled auto plant, braving a hail of missiles and firebombs.

New TV ads are encouraging Brazilians to save water – by urinating in the shower. Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica says the campaign, running on several television stations, uses humour to persuade people to reduce flushes. The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 litres of water annually. The victim, named in reports as senior triad boss Lee Tai-lung, was hit by the car as he stepped out of his silver Mercedes-Benz after parking it at the hotel. “Another vehicle arrived, then several men got out of it and attacked the man with knives,” said chief inspector Glenn O'Neill of the anti-triad unit. lan Mak, co-director of the hit crime drama “Infernal Affairs”, hopes his latest thriller will break new ground for Hong Kong filmmakers who are still learning the tastes of mainland Chinese viewers. Hong Kong directors are under mounting pressure to cater to the booming Chinese market, but they have struggled to find the pulse of mainland movie goers because Hong Kongers’ tastes tend to be more Westernised. The urban action thrillers that Hong Kong filmmakers are known for have not been big hits in China, which is often dominated by big-budget historical martial-arts epics. John Woo found success on the mainland with “Red Cliff”, a two-part battle epic that was among the biggest hits in China in the past year. Another big grosser was mainland Chinese director Feng

Mak hopes his new film, “Overheard”, will break the trend. The HK$35-million (Bt153-million) production is set in Hong Kong and follows three police officers who stumble upon an insider-trading plot during an eavesdropping operation. “If this movie does well in mainland China, then it sends us a message that we can make more movies like this,” says the 44-year-old director. So far the signs are encouraging. “Overheard”, which opened in China on July 30, made more than 35 million yuan (Bt174 million) in its opening weekend and is expected to easily break the 100-million mark. But that’s still a long way from the 300 million yuan earned by each of the two instalments of “Red Cliff” and “If You Are the One”.

he show’s title is “Sweet with Mr Fan” and it’s full of fanciful pop icons, so there’s a temptation to dismiss Yuree Kensaku’s exhibition as soap-opera silly. But we know from previous shows that the young ThaiJapanese is going to have gripping stuff beneath the cartoon hues and mixed-media jumbles. We’ve seen her tackle corruption, gambling and the Iraq war with the chaotic whimsy that’s her preferred weapon. “When we want to say something about sorrow, it doesn’t have to cause more sadness,” says Yuree. “My work looks like a bubblegum dessert, but that’s not the

flavour you get.” Mr Fan is the cool appliance with which she’s fallen in love during this elongating, CO2heated summer. In “Nobody But You”, a ceiling fan fails to chill a crowd of sweaty people in a tiny room, but placed in front of the painting is a lovely couple sure to cool things down – an actual fan and a real tin of talcum powder. “Under the Fluffy Comforter” is a self-portrait in acrylic on quilted material. She’s sleeping happily in the folds of another household object of her affection, Mr Comforter, but he’s been spurned for the time being: his warmth isn’t what she’s “looking for in a companion right know”. Yuree knows that what she’s

experienced in life “may not seem a big deal compared to those who’ve been affected by catastrophe due to global warming”, but says their plight has inspired her “to be more worried about the environment”. A wade through Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” later, and she’s using panelled doors as comic-strip frames, with a “Delightful Past, Regretful Present and Torturous Future” presented in succession. In the final panel, young people chastise adults for causing the environmental crisis. It could be Yuree’s vision of her recently born niece discovering what she’s done. Her reply is another painting, “Baby Don’t Cry”.

merican pals Brigette Polmar and Jenny Hein suddenly discovered one day that they both do squats while styling their hair. For the busy mums, tushstrengthening and blow-drying was perfectly natural combination. Realising there were countless other ways to make exercise part of life’s daily chores, they created the website SqueezeItIn.com. Hein was once a certified fitness instructor, and Polmar’s former career in TV added high production values to the site. There are enough exercises to keep you sweating in any room of the house – hairstyling “hot squats” in the bathroom, “bag some biceps” curls with groceries in the kitchen, “get a leg up” lifts while lying on the living room rug playing with your kid. Their cardio solution: running up and down your stairs. If you can manage 10 minutes at a time, three times a day, that’s equivalent to setting aside a straight half-hour. Loads of folks engage in unexpected exercise outside the gym, of course, whether it’s dancing around to their favourite song as they get dressed or balancing on one leg while waiting to cross the street. But Hein and Polmar really do pack it in, beginning with the five “anywhere moves”.

Jenny Hein demonstrates exercises she and a friend have developed for their website.

“I do the butt squeeze in the grocery store all the time,” Hein raves. “No one can tell what I’m doing. And by the time I’m done shopping, I can feel it.” Same goes for isometric abs – pulling your belly button in and holding – shoulder raises, calf raises and the ultimate stealth strengthener, kegels – those pelvic contractions that ward off incontinence and boost sexual function. If you’ve got a minute to kill near a countertop, such as when you’re waiting for the microwave, Hein suggests gripping the edge and pounding out two sets of 12 elevated push-ups. Or maybe pick up a can of soup in each hand and extend

your arms out to the side. They’re not heavy, but the move will be effective if you focus on slow and controlled moves. We put away Hein’s dishes while rising onto our toes and we cleaned up her kids’ toys by lunging to the ground and tossing them into a trunk. At

the washing machine, she showed how she squats to retrieve each item from the hamper. When we headed over to her living room sofa, we didn’t take a seat – we stuck our butts out as if we were going to, but lingered a few centimetres above the cushion.

Dutch coach Arie Haan has been suspended for three Chinese Super League matches after he waved money at a referee. Former Netherlands international Haan was reported by local media to have waved a handful of cash at the referee after a penalty was awarded against his team Chongqing Lifan in their 3-2 loss Arie Haan to league leaders Beijing Guoan on Sunday. A Chinese Football Association statement said Haan had insulted the referee “in an immoral way and caused a bad influence in society”. He was also fined 15,000 yuan (US$2,200). – AFP

Indian qualifier stuns Cilic India’s Somdev Devvarman scored the biggest victory of his career by shocking sixth seed Marin Cilic while defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro struggled to advance on Tuesday at the Washington Classic. Devvarman avenged his loss in the Chennai Open final to Cilic by upsetting the Croatian sixth seed 7-5 6-4 to reach the third round of the US$1.4-million ATP hardcourt tournament, calling it the greatest triumph of his career. Taiwan’s 62nd-ranked Lu YenHsun made an upset bid of his own but fell short as second seed and world No 6 Del Potro of Argentina rallied to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory. Germany’s Benjamin Becker fired 27 aces to beat American Robby Ginepri 7-6 (7/3) 6-7 (1/7) 7-6 (7/4) and book a second-round match with Roddick, a three-time Washington champion who had an opening bye. – AFP

Man arrested over Forrest killing A 20-year-old Atlanta man was charged on Tuesday with murder in the shooting death of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest, although authorities said they do not believe he was the triggerman. Demario Ware was also charged with aggravated assault and

armed robbery, Atlanta police Lt Keith Meadows said. The 38year-old Forrest was shot to death on July 25 after he chased a man who robbed him of his championship ring and Rolex watch, police said. Police said Ware was responsible for the robbery but that they were still looking for the shooter and at least two other suspects. Ware is expected to have a bond hearing yestserday. Police said he had a lawyer but were unsure of a name. – AP

Ballack fitness boost for Chelsea Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has handed new boss Carlo Ancelotti a boost by returning to fitness ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Manchester United. Germany captain Ballack was forced to fly home early in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America after fracturing a toe. He missed four friendlies as a result but the former Bayern Munich star returned to training on Monday Ballack and was due to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly with QPR on Tuesday. “For the next match against United he [Ballack] will be ready,” coach Ancelotti said. - AP

Liverpool manage to pull off the price they wanted for Xabi Alonso while Real finally close their transfer window

afael Bentez secured a bitter-sweet victory over Real Madrid last night when the Spanish club met his £30-million demand for Xabi Alonso and took their summer spending spree through the £200-million barrier. Alonso will undergo a medical in the Spanish capital tomorrow after Real finally relented over an asking price that Benitez had steadfastly refused to lower all summer. The 27-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract at the Bernabeu worth £3.8 million a year after tax, a package that was agreed in principle between Real and Alonso several months ago and prompted the Spain international to tell Benitez that he wished to end a successful five-year stay on Merseyside. Liverpool had previously rejected a £25-million offer from Real for their popular midfielder, who was Benitez’s first signing at Anfield in a £10.7-million move from Real Sociedad in 2004, with the manager adamant that only a fee of £30

million would trigger a deal. Liverpool’s new managing director, Christian Purslow, reiterated there would be no compromise on the fee in a meeting with Real’s executive director general, Jose Angel Sanchez, at a meeting in Barcelona on Sunday. Two days later, while Alonso was training with Liverpool at Melwood this afternoon, Real returned with the full asking price and the midfielder was withdrawn from a scheduled pre-season trip to Oslo and travelled instead to Madrid. Real Madrid say they have finally wrapped up their mega pre-season spending spree with the transfer of Alonso from Liverpool. “With this signing, the chapter is now closed on transfers,” the club’s technical director Jorge Valdano said late on Tuesday. “Before the start of the preseason, the coach [Manuel Pellegrini] told us it was necessary to strengthen two positions: the defence and the midfield, and that is what we have done,” he said.

Fergie wary of Chelsea threat Sir Alex Ferguson insists Liverpool will struggle to pose a significant threat to Manchester United’s bid for a record fourth consecutive Premier League title. Ferguson spent much of last season engaged in an increasingly bitter war of words with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and the United chief wasted no time taking aim at his old rival again. With the new league season still 10 days away, Ferguson has written off Liverpool’s hopes of ending their 19-year wait to win the title. Although Liverpool defeated United twice last season, including a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford, and finished just four points behind the champions, Ferguson believes Chelsea will be his team’s main concern. “It will be hard for them to match last season, let alone improve on it. Other teams will know more about them,” Ferguson told The Sun. “Liverpool had probably their best season for 20 years and still finished four points adrift. “It has to be Chelsea as the main threat. Ancelotti will change how they play.” The close-season departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez have led some experts to predict a less successful season for United. But Ferguson, who has signed Michael Owen and Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia, is adamant his squad is strong enough to retain the title and challege in Europe again. "People have misread our situation and they have under-estimated our ability to improve players. That is an area where we have proved successful in the past," Ferguson said. AFP

Australian captain Ricky Ponting sees his team train at Headingley cricket ground in Leeds, England yesterday.

ASHES SERIES

Boo-boys don’t bother Ponting AFP, Leeds

Australia captain Ricky Ponting said he had “loved every minute” of the drawn third Ashes Test at Edgbaston despite being booed by some England supporters as he went into bat. It was not the first time in this Ashes series, where England are 1-0 up with two to play, that Ponting has been jeered by crowds. So concerned are home officials, according to the London Daily Telegraph yesterday, that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke has written a message in the match programme for the fourth Test here at Headingley, which starts on Friday, urging fans to respect all players. But Ponting, writing in the Daily Telegraph, didn’t ap-

pear too concerned by the boos, which he was “half-expecting”. And he labelled the Barmy Army, the much criticised and vocal England supporters' group as “the best sporting crowd in the world”. Ponting added: “There is never anything untoward. It is always good, light-hearted stuff, and when England have a sniff of winning the volume goes up tenfold. They add a lot to the whole experience of the Ashes. “The Edgbaston crowd were not the first to boo me this summer - but they were the loudest. Which makes sense, because Edgbaston is famous for being the bullring of English cricket. Whenever I walk out of the changing rooms I’m half-expecting it. I’m thinking: ‘Right, let’s get it out of the way’.”

eatherweight Nacha Punthong rounded off a successful campaign by Thailand’s taekwondo team in the inaugural Asian Martial Arts Games by sealing a bronze at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium yesterday. On the final day of the competition, the hosts fielded only Nacha, who claimed a bronze in the Belgrade World University Games earlier this year, in the men’s featherweight class. Although Nacha could not add more gold medals to the two the home team had won through Rapatkorn Prasopsuk and Pen-ek Karaket, he was able to maintain the record of Thai exponents winning at least one medal on each day of the competition. Facing Taiwan’s Lo Tsung-jui

in the semi-finals, Nacha pushed for an early advantage but neither athlete was able to score a point in the opening round. The Taiwanese picked up points via a counterkick in the next session to take a 3-1 lead and went on to win the bout 5-3, leaving Nacha to be content with a bronze, which took the Thai team’s overall medal-haul to seven. Pimol Srivikorn of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, said he was satisfied with the Thai performance in the Games. “We expected to win only one gold medal in the competition. But our athletes managed to claim two gold, one silver and four bronze. So, it’s very satisfying. “They made amends for a disappointing campaign in the

One of the most anticipated showdowns in America’s Cup history will be sailed on the Persian Gulf. Two-time defending champions Alinghi of Switzerland yesterday said they have chosen Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, as the port for their best-of-3 showdown against bitter American rival BMW Oracle Racing. Officials from Alinghi said the city-state on the northern tip of the UAE was chosen because of its sailing conditions and support. “Our absolute priorities in making this decision are the prevailing weather conditions and the resulting safety that they bring to both teams,” said Alinghi skipper Brad Butterworth, a four-time America’s Cup winner. alaysia’s Danny Chia defied the flu to seize the first-round lead at the weatherinterrupted Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters yesterday in the Asian Tour. The 37-year-old carried the local challenge with a superb seven-under-par 64 to take a one-stroke lead over rookie Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand at Seri Selangor Golf Club. Chia’s compatriot Iain Steel ensured a strong Malaysian presence on the leaderboard, shooting a bogey-free 66 for joint third place with South Africa’s James Kamte and last week’s Brunei Open champion, Darren Beck of Australia. A further stroke behind is another local stalwart, Shaaban

Hussin, South Africa’s Jbe Kruger, India’s Anirban Lahiri and Korea’s Noh Seung-yul. Chia rose from his sick bed to charge into the lead thanks to an eagle and six birdies against a lone bogey. “I was feeling unwell the whole day, so maybe that made it easier for me to concentrate. I took some medicine and it made me drowsy and tired. Over the last few holes, I couldn’t even hold my grip properly,” Chia said. “I will be happy if I can make it to the tee box tomorrow,” added Chia, Malaysia’s first winner on the Asian Tour, in 2002 . A total of 21 players will return to the course early today to resume their first round. Play was suspended due to a storm in the morning.

Malaysian goes seven under in first round to take a one-stroke lead

Buick ended more than 50 years of PGA Tour sponsorship on Tuesday when it announced that it no longer will sponsor golf tournaments in Michigan and California because of the court-ordered restructuring of parent General Motors. The decision came two days after Tiger Woods won the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Woods acknowledged the end of the tournament, which he won for the third time, by heaving his golf ball toward a massive gallery after his final putt. “While this is disappointing news, both the PGA Tour and Buick remain in discussions regarding future sponsorship possibilities,” Buick and the tour said in a statement. Buick was the oldest, continuous corporate sponsor on the PGA Tour. AP
