Coloured braces kill Girl, 17, dies after trendy orthodontic procedure D A I LY X P R E S S

A

17-year-old schoolgirl in Khon Kaen has died of severe infection resulting from an orthodontic fashion procedure performed by an unauthorised practitioner. The autopsy report on Juthamas Chaiyason cited “thyroid poisoning” and “cardiac arrest” as the causes of death. She died on Sunday in the emergency unit of a local hospital after complaining of severe toothache for several days following her trip to have coloured braces fitted. The braces are fitted by dentists as a purely cosmetic procedure with no physically beneficial effects, but unqualified practitioners also offer the service.

Poisoning and infection Juthamas’s parents took her to hospital on August 20, 10 days after the braces were fitted, where the girl was diagnosed with thyroid poisoning and cardiovascular infection and sent home with medication. Her mother, Niannapha, reports that Juthamas passed out the next day after having trouble breathing. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Sunday night. Dentist Rattana Thongkham expressed concern about the trend for coloured braces, which are becoming popular among teenagers. DAILY

Thaksin picks up the tab Former PM announces launch of his radio station over lunch in Bangkok By Kornchanok Raksaseri, Naya Jaikawang D A I LY X P R E S S

haksin Shinawatra chatted with his supporters over lunch in Bangkok yesterday. The fugitive former PM treated 200 of his fans, most of them wearing red, to a meal at T Phochana Dong Moon Lek Noodle restaurant on Rama VII road, where he spoke to them via a video link. Tweets directed Twitter users who couldn’t make it to the live broadcast at www.ustream.tv/channel/thaksinlive. Supporters also talked to

their host on mobile phones provided by red-shirt staff. Thaksin organised the lunch date to promote his Internet radio station, scheduled for launch on September 1, saying he would use it to broadcast hope to Thais and talk about his experience and recipe for success.

Life saving’s frozen “If the government is not biased, it might see [my words] as food for thought,” he said. He also explained that his travel for business meant he would be phoning in his talks

for the station’s programmes. His recent trips to Africa, he said, were forced on him because his life’s savings had been frozen. He complained that allegations of corruption against him suggested he had taken the government’s money, while in fact the government had taken his money, adding that he was waiting for justice to take its course. “Some of us were born to struggle. Sometimes karma means you have to fight. But [I] believe everything will be brighter soon. After this period I foresee paths to happiness,” he said through the video link. “Time to enjoy lunch,” he continued. “If I keep talking, things will turn sad. Please en-

joy your noodles and satay pork. Eat up! Jae Ta [shop owner], please fill everyone’s plates!”

Twitter hacked A few hours after the virtual get-together with his supporters, Thaksin announced a temporary halt to his posts on Twitter, claiming his account had been hacked. “Somebody tried to get into my login,” he said, responding to a comment posted under his user name, @thaksinlive, that read “@sugree has reached a stage of madness”. The comment was later deleted. Twitter guru Sugree Phatanapherom denies all knowledge of the posting.

smile with beautiful teeth makes a first and lasting impression. But for children living in Phayao province, smiling is bringing unhappiness and depression: their teeth have telltale chalky white spots and brown stains caused by fluoride poisoning. “I am waiting for medication from a doctor,” said unhappy 15-year-old schoolboy Suppakij Tipkham, who suffers from chronic fluorosis – a dental health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development. The critical period of exposure is between one and four years of age.

Of geological origin Fluoride in water is mostly of geological origin. Water with high levels of fluoride content is found mostly at the foot of high mountains and in areas where the sea has left geological deposits. The north of Thailand is part of a fluoride belt stretching from Syria through Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Sudan and Kenya. In Thailand, the Public Health Ministry estimates about 8,500 villages in 12

of fluoride in drinking water. The World Health Organisation suggests a level of fluoride from 0.5 to 1.5 milligrams per litre, depending on climate. Thailand’s Public Health Department recommends that

the level should not exceed 0.7mg per litre for water to be safe for drinking. The severity of dental fluorosis depends on the amount of exposure to water that is naturally fluoridated to well above recommended levels. In Phayao province’s Phukamyoa district, where the water supply is fluoridated at the excessive level of 2.9mg per litre, 20.4 per cent of children suffer from dental fluorosis. Most have drunk a lot of underground water tainted with the fluoride since they were born.

Embarrassed They are embarrassed and do not feel confident when they talk with other people as they have mottled teeth, caused by the effects of high fluoride intake, making for an ugly smile. “Dental fluorosis steals smiles and ruins lives. It forces [young people] to hide from society because of their unattractive smiles,” said Public Health Department deputy director Dr Sophon Mekthon. Dental fluorosis can be cosmetically treated with dental crowns – but the cost of treatment is expensive, ranging from Bt8,000 to Bt16,000. Meanwhile, the National Health Security Office does not list treatment under the universal healthcare scheme as fluorosis is recognised as a cosmetic condition, not a disease.

EXAT is negotiating with financial institutes to sell the cards online, through vendor machines and at tollgates, Thavisin said. The Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS) is designed to dramatically reduce traffic congestion by allowing motorists who place the cards on their windshields to pass through tollgates without waiting in a long queue or spending time getting out cash to pay for toll fees. The ETCS is being installed at expressway tollbooths and should be ready for service this year at the Chalerm

WANTED REALITY TV ACTOR FOUND DEAD Ryan Jenkins, sought for his ex-wife’s murder, hangs himself in motel room A P , Vancouver

A

reality-show contestant wanted for murder in the gruesome death and mutilation of his ex-wife was found dead of an apparent suicide after hanging himself in a secluded motel, authorities said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police border integrity unit said police responded to a call from motel staff about a dead person in Hope, east of Vancouver, and then called investigators who were part of the massive man-

hunt for Ryan Jenkins. “He was found by a hotel employee hanging in his hotel room,” said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office in California.

1st-degree murder charge The 32-year-old real estate developer and investor was wanted in California on firstdegree murder charges after the dismembered body of Jasmine Fiore was found in a trash bin in Buena Park, 32 km

southeast of Los Angeles. Fiore’s teeth had been pulled out and her fingers cut off, apparently to impede her identification. Investigators used the serial numbers on her breast implants to identify her, prosecutors said. Jenkins’ body was found on Sunday afternoon in The Thunderbird Motel on an isolated road on the outskirts of Hope. The police don’t yet know how long Jenkins was at the motel before his body was discovered. Jenkins was identified through fingerprints and his family was notified before police went public with news.

Australian police and civic leaders yesterday appealed for help catching pranksters who glued a man to a public toilet seat, forcing an embarrassing rescue by ambulance officers. A 58-year-old was taken to hospital with the toilet seat still attached to his behind after he used a booby-trapped convenience in a shopping centre in Cairns. Police investigating the incident made a public appeal for help finding the joker, while furious city officials described the stunt as a “sick joke”. “I’m disgusted that a gentleman has had to go through that because someone thinks it’s funny – it’s a sick joke,” said Cairns City Council community safety committee chair Di Forsyth. Police said hospital staff removed the toilet seat from the humiliated victim’s behind using industrial strength solvents.

The girl, who was not identified, was with about 20 other tourists on a scenic overlook known as Thunder Hole when the huge wave struck. “She was recovered, but the hospital reported to us that she was deceased upon arriving to the hospital,” said Petty Officer James Rhodes. Earlier, Rhodes had said nine people were taken to the hospital after the incident, some with broken bones and back injuries. – AFP

M’sia delays caning of woman who drank beer Authorities insist Muslim model will be lashed after Ramadan A P , Karai, Malaysia

alaysian authorities abruptly postponed the caning of a model for drinking beer until after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, but insisted yesterday the punishment would not be scrapped despite criticism that it was too harsh. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, a Muslim and 32-year-old mother of two, had been en route to a women’s prison for the caning when Islamic officials who took her into custody drove her back home and released her. US dog pack shows fine line between pet and predator A P , Washington

A

dog pack blamed for the killings of a Georgia couple is a reminder of the fragility of mankind’s pact with canines. Underlying the relationship between the species is a simple expectation: we feed them, they don’t kill us. Dogs are so much a part of American life – valued members of or even substitutes for human families – that it can be easy to forget they are still animals with teeth and the ability to use them if instinct demands it. Add the lack of an owner and steady meals, and dogs can quickly begin to resemble their wolf ancestors, teaming up in packs for hunting and protection. They may look like pets, but behave like predators.

Rare killing That is what investigators believe Sherry and Lothar Schweder encountered along a country road in Georgia a week ago. They say a pack of wild dogs killed Sherry Schweder as she took an evening walk and fatally mauled her husband when he went to look for her. Authorities euthanised more than a dozen dogs they suspect were involved. A man living in the area where the Schweders were killed said he had fed the dogs and never had a problem with them. Very seldom do dogs kill people in

IF THERE IS A LACK OF AN OWNER AND STEADY MEALS,DOGS CAN QUICKLY BEGIN TO RESEMBLE THEIR WOLF ANCESTORS.THEY MAY LOOK LIKE PETS,BUT BEHAVE LIKE PREDATORS. the United States. But it is not unusual for dogs to use their teeth on people. Dogs bite about 4.5 million people in the US each year, and nearly 900,000 of those, about half of them children, require medical care. More than 31,000 Americans needed reconstructive surgery after dogs attacked them in 2006. Dr Bonnie Beaver, a former president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, said it didn’t surprise her that the dogs hadn’t attacked that man but would go after the couple. Many dogs are fine with people feeding them, but if someone strange enters their territory or stares at them, it’s a different scenario, she said.

Amnesty International condemned the sentence, and many critics had said the caning would harm Malaysia’s reputation as a moderate Muslim-majority country. Kartika was arrested in a raid for drinking beer at a hotel lounge in December 2007 and accused of breaching Malaysia’s Shariah law, which forbids Muslims from consuming alcohol. Kartika was sentenced to six strokes of a rattan cane by the Shariah court in July in what was considered a warning to other Muslims to abide by religious laws. Kartika’s sister Ratna said Kartika was “very stressed” because of the unexpected delay. In an interview with the AP last week, Kartika said she wanted to be caned because “I want to respect the law”.

Too much combing ‘can lead to hair loss’ Put that comb back in your handbag – a study by an Israeli dermatologist has found that too much combing of the coiffure leads to hair loss. During a test 14 women recorded their daily hair loss and combing habits, with those combing more losing more hair, the research found. “The women who combed twice a day lost three times more hair than those who combed once a day,” the head of the study, Alexander Kirdman of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, was quoted as saying. “I was surprised by the results, as in medical circles the comb is believed to improve blood circulation and reduce hair loss,” added Kirdman, whose study was recently published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment. The crown briefly fell to the floor as it passed from one Venezuelan beauty to the next. But Fernandez said there was time for

SKIN DEEP A slimmer, more slender face I’ve heard that Botox can be used for recontouring the jawbone. Is that true? Botox cannot recontour the jawbone. However, by blocking the nerve stimulus to the jaw muscles, it does relax the activity of those muscles, which thins the lower face and reduces the squareness of the jaw. In the past, achieving an oval facial appearance required bone contouring surgery with its attendant lengthy post-operative recovery time and other potential risks. Today, Botox treatment has been developed to achieve these changes. The procedure involves injecting the masseter muscle or the jaw muscle to change a square lower face into a slimmer, more feminine lower face without downtime. The Botox treatment can reduce the size of the jaw muscle by 20 to 30 per cent. The result will occur gradually over the course of few weeks. The effects should last a little longer than Botox injection for wrinkle reduction, although it varies from individual to individual. Thanisorn Thamlikitkul,

ump the captain, fire the coach, demanded the detractors. And make the selectors pay for obvious bad choices. Australia’s Ashes loss to England in the fifth cricket Test yesterday wore heavily on the psyche of many Australians, as it will for the next 18 months until the teams meet again Down Under. As it was, most Australians were sleeping overnight on Sunday when the end came. It was 2.48am local time yesterday on the east coast when Michael Hussey was finally out to complete a 197-run defeat at The Oval in London, sealing England’s 2-1 win in the fivematch series. Ricky Ponting now has the dubious distinction of being only the second Australian captain – and the first since Billy Murdoch more than a century ago (1884 and 1890) – to lose the Ashes twice in England.

It didn’t help that his runout – and that of his vice-captain Michael Clarke within the space of six balls – was the beginning of the end of any chance Australia had of achieving a record fourth-innings chase of 546 runs or batting through to force a draw at The Oval. After a comprehensive victory in the fourth Test to square the series at 1-1, after wasting the chance to open with a victory at Cardiff in the first Test, Australia were favoured to win or least hold on for a draw in the last match to retain the Ashes. In two overcast sessions, the entire series turned, and England had the upper hand from the second of five days. Peter Roebuck, a veteran cricket writer for the Sydney Morning Herald and a strident Ponting critic in the past, supported the Australian skipper. “Ponting will not be evicted, nor is he likely to step aside,” Roebuck wrote. “Although the inside edges are a worry, he confirmed his batting skills in Cardiff and Headingley. And it is rare for an Australian captain to be allowed to keep playing once

he has stood down.” Former Australia opening batsman Michael Slater wasn’t so sure, criticising Ponting and the selectors for allowing Australia to slip to No 4 in the world rankings after defending the No 1 ranking against the odds and against a better team in South Africa earlier this year. “The fact of the matter is that we have gone over to England with the wrong squad,” Slater said. Malcolm Conn, writing in The Australian newspaper, suggested the entire selection panel needed to be reviewed. “Is Andrew Hilditch too conservative a chairman? How many hats should selector, tour group leader and commentator Merv Hughes be able to wear?” Conn wrote. Former Australia Test allrounder Tom Moody also criticised the selectors, saying their decision to leave out spinner Nathan Hauritz in the deciding test was “horribly wrong.” “To not pick a genuine spinner in that situation is inexcusable,” said Moody, who is coach of Western Australia state.

ngland captain Andrew Strauss urged his side to use their Ashes series triumph as a stepping stone to further success after a dramatic fifth Test win over Australia here at the Oval. Victory, by the dominating margin of 197 runs and with more than a day to spare, saw England take the series 2-1. Strauss recognised the dangers inherent in Ashes hype after a triumph that saw his side knock Australia off the number one spot in the world Test rankings but still left his side in fifth place. “We are not the number one side the world, we are from it at the moment,” said Strauss. “I think we are honest enough to know that. To become the number one side in the world you have to win consistently home and away. “Our next challenge is a massive one, away in South Africa. South Africa is probably as hard a tour as you can go on but we can take confidence from this. Our goal is obviously to be number one in the world. “Last time we were stepping into the unknown, nobody in the team had ever won an Ashes series. I think also we have got to be conscious that this is a stepping stone. “We’ve got a young side, we can get a lot better than we are at the moment. We are pretty inconsistent as we’ve ably demonstrated this series. But we’ve shown some guts and determination and some character. Australia dominated the batting and bowling averages this series but still lost. “I think it just shows that when we are bad we are very bad and when we are good we are very good,” said Strauss. “At the important moments we came good, we bowled them out cheaply in the first innings which was absolutely crucial and we dug in and got runs.”

PRESSEL DELIVERS Americans win third straight Solheim Cup A P , Sugar Grove, Illinois

organ Pressel delivered the winning point with her 3-and-2 victory over Anna Nordqvist on Sunday, as the Americans won their third straight Solheim Cup with a 1612 decision over Europe on Sunday. After Nordqvist missed an 8foot putt to keep the match alive, Pressel’s team-mates, who had been watching at the side of the green, leaped up and started celebrating. “This is so important to us,” Pressel said, wiping away tears. “It’s not about pride. It’s not about money. It’s about country. It’s about our team-mates.” The Americans were heavy favourites this week. They had some of the top players in the world while four of Europe’s players were ranked 125th or lower. Annika Sorenstam, Europe’s anchor the last decade, is no longer playing. And the United States had won the last two Solheim Cups, and were unbeaten on US soil. But Europe captain Alison Nicholas pulled out every trick she could this week to inspire her team, including video messages from Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal, whose “Spanish Armada” was regarded as the greatest partnership in Ryder Cup history. Midway through Sunday afternoon, Europe were leading in six of the 12 matches. Angela Stanford gave the Americans their first boost, beating Becky Brewerton 5 and 4 to give the United States the

Paula Creamer followed with a victory over Suzann Pettersen shortly after, and Michelle Wie rebounded to beat Helen Alfredsson 1 up. Wie, whose 3-0-1 record was the best of any American this week, grabbed a US flag and held it aloft to cries of “Wheee!” from the crowd. As the last three matches finished, there were shrieks of joy when the next American joined the party, and new rounds of “U-SA! U-S-A!” When the last match was over, they ran around the 18th green hugging each other and waving American flags. The fans at Rich Harvest Farms, so boisterous all week, joined in

with more chants and applause. “Most of the day, I didn’t

think it was going to happen,” an emotional US captain Beth Daniel said. Wie had been 3 up through six holes, but former European captain Alfredsson made some vital shots to even it after 11 holes. “It was tough,” Wie said. “Helen’s the best. She’s just so tough to beat.” Wie showed again that when she’s on song, few can touch her. Her drive on the par-5 15th went 305 yards and she hit an eight iron to 20 feet. She twoputted for the birdie, and Alfredsson couldn’t make the putt to match her. “I did not want to go to 18,” Wie said, “but it came to that. “ The United States won the singles 8-4.

England’s Simon Dyson came from six shots back at the start of the final round to clinch the KLM Open, beating Ireland’s Peter Lawrie and Sweden’s Peter Hedblom in a play-off on Sunday in Zandvoort, the Netherlands. After claiming six birdies in his first 12 holes, Dyson carded a course recordequalling seven under 63 and then birdied the first extra hole for his second title at the KLM Open. Dyson previously won in 2006 on another 18-foot birdie putt. “When I birdied the seventh and ninth I thought back to doing the same when I won,” Dyson said. “Then I birdied the 12th like I did then.” Lawrie, who was one ahead of Dyson with three to play bogeyed the 16th, while Hedblom lost his fourth career playoff by firing a 25foot putt wide. Defending champion Darren Clarke settled for fifth alongside Welshman Jamie Donaldson.

Reid wins Tradition Mike Reid made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole on Sunday to beat John Cook and win the JeldWen Tradition for his second career major on the Champions Tour. Reid raised both hands and let out a deep sigh before humbly removing his cap and shaking Cook’s hand at Crosswater Golf Club in central Oregon. “I just don’t feel deserving,” he said. “But I’m so grateful.” AP

yan Moore won with a birdie on the third hole of a sudden death play-off against Kevin Stadler on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship to capture his first title on the PGA Tour. Moore, who vaulted up the leaderboard with five consecutive birdies on the back nine, had two chances to seal the victory after his approach on No 18 landed in the middle of the

green and rolled to 6 feet. He sank that putt for his first victory in his 112th event. Stadler’s second shot on the third play-off hole skipped off the back of the green. He chipped within 20 feet, but his putt drifted to the low side of the cup. That cleared the way for Moore to pick up $918,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points for winning the final tournament before the play-offs start later this

week. Stadler, Moore and Jason Bohn forced the play-off after they were tied at 16-under 264 through 72 holes. Bohn was eliminated on the first play-off hole after he had trouble escaping the greenside bunker on No 18 and his first shot rolled back into the sand. Sergio Garcia blew a threestroke lead midway through the final round, shot a 70 and finished at 265. Moore and Stadler each could have avoided the

play-off, but both bogeyed No 18. Moore sailed his drive near the cart path. His second shot bounced into a bunker and – after a remarkable bunker chip to 8 feet – his short par putt bent left around the hole. Stadler’s third shot landed on a hill behind the green and rolled back to 8 feet from the flagstick, but he left his par putt about 6 inches short. Moore shot a 65 in the final round.

ocal fans are waiting with bated breath after the latest round of speculation surrounding the future of national coach Peter Reid. Skysports website broke the news that the veteran coach, who’s been at the helm of the national team since September, was poised to join English Premier League club Stoke as assistant to manager Tony Pulis. The post became vacant after Dave Kemp switched to a scouting job. It’s not the first time the Englishman, who spent seven years with Sunderland between 1995 and 2002, has been linked with a club back home. However, it seems there’s substance to the story this time after Reid was spotted sitting alongside Stoke’s part-time coach, Gerry Francis, during the Potters’ goalless draw with Birmingham at the weekend. Rumours have it that he’s already made a verbal agreement with the English club and it is now just a matter of negotiating contract terms. Pulis made no secret of his admiration for the 53-year-old Reid, whom he believes will help move the club forward after it survived a first term in the Premiership last season. “Peter is a proper football man whose experience in the game will be a valuable asset to me and everyone else at the club. “He is a bubbly character and that will certainly have a

If Reid does return home, it will be a big setback to the national side, which looked to be heading in the right direction under the stewardship of the ex-England player. Thailand are also in the middle of qualification for the Qatar-hosted Asian Cup in 2011. The words of Steve Darby, Reid’s number two, could allay Thai fans’ concerns for the moment, though. “No official word has been given to the Thai FA as yet, so at the moment it's an ongoing story,” Darby was quoted as saying by Associated Press.

conference to spread the news.” “I am in daily contact with Peter, and at this moment nothing is concrete yet ... but he regularly gets offered jobs as he was so successful over a long period with Sunderland.” “I’d be disappointed if he goes because I really enjoy working with him, but is football ever simple and logical?” Worawi Makudi, the Association president, insisted no deal had been reached and no one had contacted him so far. “I don’t have any information, nothing has been passed on to me at this time," said Worawi, who is also an executive committee member of Fifa.

verton confirmed they have agreed a fee with English Premier League rivals Manchester City for the sale of defender Joleon Lescott, bringing to an end a bitter, summer-long saga. The England international is expected to undergo a medical on Monday after City finally matched the Merseysiders’ valuation of £24 million. Earlier, Everton manager David Moyes took a final swipe at City over the affair. Asked after his side’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley on Sunday if the Lescott deal was well advanced Moyes said: “If they [City] say they are quite far on I’m sure they are. “But we shouldn’t have been asked to wait this length of time for an amount of cash we think was the correct value for the player. Real Madrid came in with the money to buy Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United the week after the end of the season. “If the money had been offered in June it would have been a lot easier for us. The time is against us [to find a replacement].”

The move will be seen as a signal that current owner Mike Ashley would still prefer to sell the club rather than hang on.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka, left, celebrates scoring the second goal with Didier Drogba against Fulham.

Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka’s revitalised partnership will strike fear into the hearts of Chelsea’s Premier League title rivals. The Italian manager saw his new charges extend their perfect start to the season with a 2-0 victory at Fulham on Sunday, sealed by a goal in each half from Drogba and Anelka. The pair have not always gelled successfully during their time together at Stamford Bridge. But former AC Milan coach Ancelotti has tinkered with Chelsea’s system, converting his midfield into a diamond formation and challenging Drogba and Anelka to dovetail neatly up front. The results have been spectacular. They were exceptional at Craven Cottage, with each player setting up the other’s goal, and Ancelotti has now challenged them to maintain their electric start to the new campaign. “I was always sure Didier and Nicolas could play together,” Ancelotti said. “They are fantastic strikers and different players. I don’t know why it didn’t work with previous managers – it depends on the system you want to use on the pitch. “Our idea for Nicolas was that he should stay a little behind Didier. In the first half, he played a bit on the wing, by the right-back, so our play wasn’t so good. In the second it was better as he played more in the centre.”
