GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!
Buddhism can heal divisions By ML Parson Svasti Food critic
M
y friends are divided into two extreme groups – red and yellow. I want to go back to the good old days when all of us Thais were compromising and respected one another’s differences. I believe Buddhism can help solve social conflicts and divisions. We should start by observing the five precepts – abstention from killing, stealing, adultery, lying and intoxicating drink – and we’ll finally realise that everything’s subject to change.

ROMANCE of a lifetime Tan knew Nahathai was the woman he wanted to spend his life with when he met her for the third time. They are now going to wed on October 31
F
ormer deputy government spokeswoman Nahathai Thewphaingarm is going to marry her Canadian-born sweetheart Tan Somboonsap at the end of next month. Like many high-profile women, especially those in the cruel political world, Nahathai has had to endure a stream of gossip. But the upcoming marriage will leave behind romantic rumours that she spent the last few years fighting off. Tan met Nahathai for the first time at a wine-tasting event in Thailand last November.
The ‘woman in red’ He described her then as the “woman in red”: while everyone else at the event was dressed in rather subdued shades, Nahathai looked stunning in her red attire. “I wore what made me look good. The choice has nothing to do with the red movement [United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship],” Nahathai insists. Back then, Tan did not know much about Nahathai or Thai politics. He spent most of his life in Canada though he travelled to Thailand quite often. However, he was keen to learn more about politics in this country as soon as Nahathai stole his heart. Their relationship did not blossom right from the first encounter, though. It was only after they ran into each other at a major concert shortly after that they became quite close. DAILY

“Then within the same month, we met by chance again at a restaurant,” Tan says. “On that third occasion, I knew in my heart that she was the one for me and I frankly told my mum so.” Tan had more time to get to know her better because the People’s Alliance for Democracy protesters poured into Suvarnabhumi Airport, forcing the facility to shut down for more than a week.
She is ‘cool’, he is ‘smart’ Now, he finds Nahathai “cool”, while she finds him “smart and funny”. Born to a rich family, Nahathai graduated from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Education. She then headed to the United States and returned with an MA in education management and a PhD in international education management. She ran for an MP seat in Bangkok eight years ago. Although she was beaten, she was offered the post of deputy government spokeswoman. She worked in many other important positions in the following years. Then in 2005, Nahathai got elected as a Bangkok MP under the Thai Rak Thai banner. Her family runs the Thewpaingarm School, which she is now in charge of. Tan was also a bright student. Being smart and tough, he founded his company when he was just a second-year university student. “He’s kind and patient. And
while I’m decisive, he’s very prudent. I think it’s good for us to be together,” Nahathai says. They will tie the knot on October 31. Although the chosen day will coincide with Halloween, the 39-year-old bride-to-be is adamant that it is an auspicious time according to the Thai astrological calendar. “There will be a Thai-style procession of dowry for the bride in the morning,” Nahathai says. “Then, ‘Orchestra Wedding’ will be the theme until 9pm. After that, the theme will change to ‘Halloween Wedding’.”

A teenage girl in India’s northern state of Haryana murdered seven members of her family including her parents because of a starcrossed romance. The 19-year-old was arrested with her lover in the Kabulpur village near Rohtak city, 90 km northwest of New Delhi, the NDTV network reported. The bodies of the seven victims had strangulation marks on their necks. District police officials told the PTI news agency that the boy procured some poison and the girl mixed it with food and served it to her family. When the victims fell unconscious, the girl called the boy to the house and the two strangulated her parents, grandmother, brother and three cousins. Police said they committed the crime fearing their families would never allow them to get married since they belonged to the same clan. Marriage within the same clan is not permitted in rural Haryana. – D P A

Ex-aide says Edwards fathered mistress’ child Former Democratic presidential candidate ‘told her they would tie the knot after his wife died’ A P , Chapel Hill, North Carolina
A
man who once claimed to have fathered the child of John Edwards’ mistress says in a book proposal the former Democratic presidential candidate is the real father and that Edwards had worked with his campaign finance chairman to hide that secret. The New York Times said the book proposal by former Edwards aide Andrew Young states he helped facilitate the affair between Edwards and Rielle Hunter. According to the newspaper, Young wrote that Edwards once told Hunter
they would wed after Edwards’ wife, who has cancer, died. Edwards told Hunter that the ceremony would be held on a rooftop in New York and the Dave Matthews Bands would make an appearance, the newspaper said, citing its examination of the book proposal.
Adamant denial St Martins Press has said Young signed a book deal with the publisher in June and it involved a strict confidentiality agreement.
Edwards has said the affair with Hunter ended in 2006. He adamantly denied during an interview with ABC News last summer that he had fathered a child with Hunter, and he welcomed a paternity test. His wife, Elizabeth, has said she doesn’t know if her husband is the father. Young said in 2007 he was the child’s father. Hunter said around the same time that Young was the father and the birth certificate does not list a father’s name. Edwards’ attorney Wade Smith said that Edwards may make a statement at some point in the future about the paternity of Frances Quinn Hunter, who is 19-months old.
New Jersey police say a four-year-old boy shared cocaine with his friends at a day-care centre because his father told him it was candy. Newark police say 25-yearold Shaheed Wright of East Orange put several baggies of cocaine inside his son’s jacket after police nearly caught him with it. The boy shared the drugs with three other four-year-olds. A teacher spotted a girl with a baggie in her mouth and called authorities after seeing the white powdery substance. The children were taken to a hospital, but none were injured. Police found more baggies of cocaine after searching the boy’s pockets. Wright was charged with four counts of child endangerment and drug offences. – AP
Hunt for insane killer Police in Washington state hunted for a criminally insane killer after he escaped from care while on a mental hospital field trip to an amusement park, sparking public outrage. The Spokane County Sheriff’s office said it was to continue a helicopter and land search for Phillip Paul, acting on “scores” of citizen tip-offs since he was reported missing on Thursday. Paul escaped minders at a local fair, prompting a barrage of criticism from the public who questioned why a man with such a violent past would be allowed to roam the streets. The state’s Department of Social Health Services indicated that Paul’s medication “should keep him stable for 14 days”, according to police. – AFP

Nothing is impossible: Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez will travel the world as an ambassador for the pageant, lending her celebrity status to causes such as Aids awareness
NEXT YEAR WE’RE GOING FOR A TRIPLET. Stefania Fernandez, 18

Stefania Fernandez, 18, was welcomed at the airport with a red carpet and flowers. “Nothing is impossible, Venezuela!” she said, stepping off the plane in a blue dress and sparkling crown. eyonce Knowles says she will perform in Malaysia in October, two years after cancelling a show in this Muslim-majority country after protesters threatened to disrupt the concert because of her sexy image and clothing. The R&B superstar’s upcoming show is already drawing the ire of conservatives in this country, where female performers are required to cover up from the shoulders to knees with no cleavage showing. Knowles will take the stage at a stadium in Kuala Lumpur on October 25. “Beyonce for the first time ever has decided to make Malaysia part of her “I am World Tour”, her website said. Knowles cancelled a planned concert two years ago following protest threats by Malaysia’s opposition Islamic party. At the time her talent agency said the show was called off due to a scheduling conflict. Instead she went to Indonesia, which has less stringent rules about how performers should dress and behave.
Protest note to the govt Sabki Yusof, youth vice head of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said yesterday that they would send a protest note to the government over the con-

Artists such as Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysia under similar protest threats by conservative Muslims, forcing the artists to don attire that revealed little skin.
She said she hopes her successor as Miss Venezuela will capture a third consecutive win for their country. “Next year, we’re going for the triplet,” she told reporters. Fernandez will spend the next year travelling the world as an ambassador for the Miss Universe pageant, lending her celebrity status to
causes such as Aids awareness. She will also study English and French.
Here ‘to unite’ Asked what she would say to Colombian rocker Juanes regarding his controversial “Peace Without Borders” concert in Havana yesterday, Fernandez said she believes that musicians, like beauty queens, “are always here to unite, not to create one more problem in the world”. The concert has drawn criticism in the CubanAmerican exile community, where many complain Juanes is endorsing the island’s communist system. Organisers insist the show has no ideological overtones.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Junk from all kinds of places gets new life at an exhibition of recycled goods
J
unk from construction sites, factories and garbage dumps finds new life as eye-catching, handcrafted and affordable furniture and accessories. Now you can witness the wonder of recycling in a show, “Scrap Lab Exhibition 2009: Reloaded”, which runs until Wednesday on the first floor of Siam Discovery. “Scrap Lab” is part of the Eco Projects series initiated by Siam Centre and Siam Discovery to continuously improve environmental quality. This project aims to create an outside-the-classroom experience for participating students and encourage them to produce wonderful works of art or sculpture from wasted materials from many sources Now in its second year, it has architect Singh Intrachooto, who has put the environmentally friendly brand Osisu at the forefront of design, is the consultant to participating students, helping them turn junk into cool stuff.
One man’s junk Among the highlights is “Again and Again”, which keeps burnt-out light bulbs out of the trash heap by turning them into an amazingly beautiful lamp. Another terrific work from energy-saving light bulbs is “Wheel Shine” inspired by stalagmite and stalactite. To create this amazing chandelier, bicycle wheels of different sizes are connected and hung by expired energyefficient light bulbs. New bulbs are then screwed in to give the lamp new life.
Architect Singh Intrachooto is a pioneer in turning junk into eyecatching new products.

The ‘Super–Tag Bags’, above, are made of milk containers. Others are, clockwise, ‘Again and Again’ and ‘Wheel Shine’ made from old light bulbs and ‘Saa Brown Bag’ from recycled paper and ‘Cargo Bag’ from waste plastic.
Scrap metal from automotive manufacture is recycled for “Bird Nest”, a creative piece with a beautiful lighting and shading effect. The aptly named “Back Bone Chair” is made by folding an iron plate into a solid structure to offer weight support. There are also a variety of bags made of recycled materials, among them the “Saa Brown Bag” fashioned from recycled Saa or mulberry paper, the “Super–Tag Bags” made of plastic milk bags and the “Cargo Bag”, which is made from plastic obtained from garbage separation.

about “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”, the movie that’s opening the Bangkok International Film Festival: The director is not Worner Herxog, as stated in a festival press release. It’s Werner Herzog. The one-time Oscar nominee is widely revered in cinema, not least for “Aguirre, the Wrath of God”. The other thing is that Herzog’s 2007 movie “Rescue Dawn”, starring Christian Bale, has been shown around the world, but never in Thailand, even though it was shot here. The producer of “Rescue Dawn” happens to have been Gerald Green, who with his wife Patricia, was last week convicted in the US for bribing a Tourism Authority of Thailand chief to let them run the Bangkok festival. Local ace Boonsak Ponsana lost to China’s Lin Dan 21-17 2117 in the men’s singles final of the China Masters Super Series badminton in Changzhou. Boonsak, the World No 11 and the 2004 Thailand Open champion, stunned China’s Chen Jin, world No 2 and silver medallist at the World Championships, 21-16 4-21 2119 in the semi-finals to become the lone non-Chinese player to make the final as all the other four events – men’s doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles – featured an all-Chinese final. However, Boonsak failed to make his mark in the final against Lin to succumb in straight games in a 41-minute clash in the US$250,000 tournament, part of the BWF World Series. FAMILIAR SCENE Spain eye fourth Davis Cup title against Czechs A F P , Paris
D
efending champions Spain will face the Czech Republic in the 2009 Davis Cup final after decisively proving once again that there is life beyond Rafael Nadal. The world No 1 skipped this weekend’s semi-final win over Israel in Murcia after being forced to rest an abdominal strain picked up in his recent run to the US Open last four. It was a familiar scenario for the Spanish who defeated Argentina in the 2008 final without the six-time Grand Slam title winner, sidelined from that encounter because of a knee injury. On Saturday, doubles pair Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez defeated Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram 7-6 (8/6) 6-7 (7/9) 6-4 6-2 to give their team an unassailable 3-0 lead and a place in a seventh Davis Cup final. In the December 4-6 title match, which they will host,
they’ll start overwhelming favourites to claim a fourth title having now won 17 straight Davis Cup home ties. It will also give Spain captain Albert Costa a selection headache with Nadal and fellow top 10 player Fernando Verdasco, who was another semi-final absentee, likely to be fit.“It was a question of taking our opportunities,” said Robredo. “The first two sets were very close, but then we played our best in the third and fourth sets.” The Czechs, who opened up an unbeatable 3-0 lead over 2005 winners Croatia in Porec, will be playing in only their third final, and first since 1980 when they won their one and only title. Spain had been 2-0 ahead overnight after David Ferrer had swept past Harel Levy 6-1 6-4 6-3 before Juan Carlos Ferrero, Nadal’s replacement, outclassed Dudi Sela 6-4 6-2 60. Lopez and Robredo won the first set on the tiebreak and even had two set points in the second before the Israeli doubles specialists levelled.
Israel had defeated former champions Russia in the quarter-finals, but any hope of a repeat were quickly snuffed out when Lopez and Robredo opened up a 4-0 lead in the third set. Erlich then needed treatment on an injured elbow at 1-1 in the fourth set before the Spanish duo romped to victory. “That was the point that we lost the match,” said Ram. “Jonathan couldn’t serve his best, but it’s tough to beat Spain on clay, even if we were healthy.” Costa dedicated the victory to a young woman who died in floods caused by a torrential storm in Murcia on Wednesday. A minute’s silence was observed in her memory before the start of Friday’s first singles. The Czech Republic reached their first final in 29 years when Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek defeated Lovro Zovko and Marin Cilic 6-1 6-3 64, a welcome straight-sets win coming after Friday’s two marathon singles which had taken almost 10 hours to complete.
hailand were relegated to Group II for the first time in 10 years after they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of China in the Davis Cup Zone Asia/Oceania Group I play-off in Jiaxing. Fighting with their backs to the wall, Thailand needed the two points from yesterday’s reverse singles to pull off a victory but they did not even come close. The challenge was over when Danai Udomchoke was knocked out by Chinese No 1 Zeng Shao-xuan 2-6 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-4 in a controversial match that was marred by several bad calls. “It was very tough out there. Not only was I fighting against Zeng across the net but also against the linesmen who made some 30 to 40 bad calls,’’ complained Danai who also confessed that he made several mistakes during the match. With the third point from Zeng, China won the tie and kept their status in Group I next year regardless of the fifth rubber which Gong Maoxin won convincingly by beating Kittiphong Wachiramanowong 7-5 3-6 6-3. Thailand will fall to Group II next year. The last time the Kingdom featured in Group II was in 1999. Meanwhile, the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand said it will file a complaint to the ITF regarding the officiating in the tie between China and Thailand.
Peer wins in China Israel’s Shahar Peer won her first WTA singles title in three years yesterday, overcoming Italy’s Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-4 to claim the Guangzhou Open. It was a long-awaited return to winning form for Peer, who had won three previous titles, but they were all in 2006 and she had failed to reach those heights again.

Korean Choi shoots 9-under 63 to lead Samsung World Championship by 2 shots Choi Na-yeon of South Korea shot a career best 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead over compatriot Shin Ji-yai in the Samsung World Championship at Torrey Pines on Saturday. “I had a great round today,” Choi said. “I felt almost perfect with everything. My driver was good, iron shots good, and wedge and putter good. I think it was perfect today.” Choi finished at 15-under 201 to tie the tournament’s
three-round record set by Annika Sorenstam when the Swede won here in 2002 and 2005. Choi began the day three strokes behind secondround leader Shin, who shot a 68. Choi has never won on the US LPGA Tour, but has eight top-10 finishes this year, including a tie for ninth at the US Women’s Open. After yielding 14 rounds in the 60s in the first two days,
Choi Na-yeon lines up her putt on the 4th green. Torrey Pines was toughened up with faster greens and tighter pin placements on Saturday.
Only Ai Miyazato of Japan (68), Shin and Choi shot 60s. Shin and Miyazato, who played together, were amazed by Choi’s score. “That’s a really solid round,” Miyazato said. “Nine under, that feels like 12-under on a normal golf course. This is not a very easy golf course.” Miyazato was three strokes back in third after her third straight 68. Meanwhile, Jay Haas and
Nick Price shared the lead at the Greater Hickory Classic going into the final round at the Champions Tour event in Conover, North Carolina, on Saturday. Haas, the 2005 winner, and Price are at 11-under 133 after two rounds at Rock Barn Golf and Spa’s Robert Trent Jones course. Haas shot a 1-under 71, while Price vaulted into contention with a 5-under 67.

CLAMOUR FOR BLOOD F1 credibility, Renault future in sport at stake

he Singapore race-fixing scandal, which has plunged the world’s most glamorous sport into a bitter spiral of recriminations and resignations, will push Formula One’s credibility to the brink today. It will also go a long way in helping disgraced paddock superpower Renault decide whether or not it really wants to continue in a sport which bleeds ¤300 million from its stretched budget every year. The French team hope that the resignations of flamboyant team principal Flavio Briatore and engineering chief Pat Symonds, following allegations they ordered ex-driver Nelson Piquet to deliberately crash in Singapore in 2008, will guarantee clemency when the World Motor Sports Council meets. Having admitted they will not contest the charges against them, the likelihood is that a heavy fine and a points deduction will be the preferred sentence rather than outright banishment from the championship. However, even that hasn’t stopped the clamour for blood from respected voices within a sport which, in the aftermath of other recent acts of skullduggery, are exhausted by the damage caused to F1’s image. “When I first heard the accusation that Renault had asked Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately, the question was whether it was true or not,” Niki Lauda told the Daily Mail.

Renault driver Fernando Alonso after winning the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix last year. “If it was true, then it amounted to the worst thing that has happened in Formula One.” Lauda believes Piquet’s crash, deliberately engineered so as to help team-mate Fernando Alonso take a surprise victory, is a worse scandal than even the ‘Spygate’ affair of 2007 where McLaren were found to be in possession of technical data belonging to rivals Ferrari. McLaren were fined a record US$100 million and stripped of their constructors points for the season. “Yes, the McLaren spying scandal two years ago was extremely serious but mechanics have always discussed technical data among themselves. “This, though, is new. The biggest damage ever. Now the FIA must punish Renault heavi-
IF IT WAS TRUE,THEN IT AMOUNTED TO THE WORST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN FORMULA ONE. Niki Lauda ly to restore credibility in the sport.” As well as the public thirst for retribution in a sport watched by an estimated 600 million people worldwide, the
FIA also faces a delicate balancing act today. Renault’s future in Formula One has been the subject of speculation for a long time. The loss of another manufacturer would be hard to stomach following last year’s withdrawal of Honda and the impending departure of BMW. Renault’s title sponsor ING will pull out at the end of the season while their parent company reported losses of ¤2.7 billion in the first half of this year. Former world champion Alonso, meanwhile, doesn’t come cheap with a salary of around $25 million although the Spaniard is widely expected to move to Ferrari in 2010. Renault’s form on the track this season hasn’t created any great optimism.
orruption runs deep in Formula One and the only way to stop the rot is for a total break from the existing system, the man hoping to succeed Max Mosley as FIA president claimed yesterday. Ari Vatanen, the former rally champion who is in a run off with Mosley’s preferred candidate Jean Todt in next month’s FIA presidential election, made the accusation on the eve of today’s ‘crashgate’ hearing in Paris. The World Motor Sport Council is holding an extraordinary meeting to investigate what some are calling the worst case of cheating in the history of sport – conspiring to cause Renault driver Nelson Piquet junior’s deliberate crash at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix to help team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race. “What is happening here with Renault is more than just the tip of the iceberg, it is symptomatic of a wider problem,” Vatanen said “The image of the sport has been battered recently. “Look at all the leaked dossiers. We have gone from ‘Spygate’ to ‘Crashgate’ with many other things in between. What the public see is a corrupt sport. They do not trust it and who can blame them.” Vatanen tells the paper that the WMSC is not the right body to hear the Renault case as members of the board like Formula One rights holder Bernie Ecclestone have “vested interests”. “For me we must introduce an absolutely independent body to arbitrate in these proceedings,” Vatanen said.

CLASS OF HIS OWN Hot Messi inspires Barcelona to five-goal victory AFP, Madrid
rgentine star Lionel Messi celebrated his new deal with Barcelona by scoring twice in the European champions’ 5-2 win over floundering Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Messi signed a two-year contract extension on Friday which will keep him at the club until 2016 and with a buy-out clause rising from 150 million to an even more staggering ¤250 million. But he showed his value to the defending champions on Saturday as Barcelona made it three wins in three games to stay top of the table. Having failed to record a win so far this season the signs were ominous for Atletico ahead of their visit to the Nou Camp. Last season they lost the corresponding match 5-1 and on Saturday they quickly went behind after a good finish from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Messi then scored the first of a brace, rounding the keeper after being put clear by Xavi Hernandez. Maxi Rodriguez and Jose Jurado had chances to pull a goal back before a Dani Alves free-kick and a Seydou Keita tap-in gave Barcelona a 4-0 advantage. “It was a strange match perhaps down to the way both teams played,” said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. “I think that if we had not had that level of intensity we would not have won. “Both sides attacked but we were not clever enough with the ball. Players like him and like [Diego] Maradona are one-offs, I’ve never seen anyone similar,” he gushed. “Buffon stopped everything. We shot from everywhere and he was always there. He didn’t give an inch.”
AC Milan coach Leonardo admitted that former world player of the year Ronaldinho is not the player he once was but insisted he still has a role to play at the club. Leonardo insisted it wasn’t helping Ronaldinho to be constantly in the spotlight. “There’s no need to judge Ronaldinho before and after every game. He is a resource like every other player at the club,” the coach said. “It’s normal to make some changes when you have to play a long way away with only a few days rest. It seems to me that Ronaldinho is always under observation. Every performance is analysed and reanalysed. “He’s a Ballon d’Or winner and it’s normal that he’s analysed but I think there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration. “He has a public image [as liking to party] and every time something happens it gets blown up. It’s also in part his fault, particularly given what happened in the past at Barcelona. “Sometimes he struggles to find space to move around the pitch. I also have to be strong in finding different solutions. He can play off the lone striker, at Barcelona he also played as a lone striker. When a player is in form and has Ronaldinho’s class he can play as a central striker but maybe in Italy he struggles more. “It’s true that he’s not the player of three years ago but he has done some good things this year and he will do again.” – A F P
Ade lacked respect, says Henry A F P , London

hierry Henry believes his former Arsenal team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor was out of order with his celebrations in front of the Arsenal fans last week after scoring for his new club Manchester City. The Togo striker ran the length of the Eastlands pitch to celebrate in front of the Gunners supporters after scoring in City’s 4-2 Premier
League win.It sparked a furious reactions from the fans of his former club, and Arsenal legend Henry, now with Barcelona, took Adebayor to task over his actions. The French striker told the Sunday Mirror: “The fans at Arsenal were great. They were and always will be my family. “I never saw them behave badly so to react like they did at the weekend shows just
how angry and upset they were. “No matter what Adebayor’s emotions were, he could have earned himself a lot of respect by not celebrating the goal. “That would have shown real class and that to be honest is what most players choose to do when they score against their old clubs. “I don’t really understand why he didn’t do that.”

THESPORT Rafael Benitez believes Fernando Torres is nearing a return to his best form after the Spain striker scored twice in Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over West Ham. Torres’s goals – he opened the scoring in the 20th minute and clinched the victory 15 minutes from time – were crucial after Benitez’s side twice conceded the lead against a determined West Ham. The manager accepted that defensive errors had almost cost his team victory but was delighted that Torres appears to have shrugged off the lingering hangover of last year’s extended season that included a trip to the Confederations Cup with his country. “Last week he was not scoring goals and everyone was asking me whether he is fit,” said Benitez. “This week he scored two important goals and I was also really pleased with him against Debrecen in the Champions League game because he was working very hard. “Touch wood. I think he is now fit and we are working hard with him. If he can continue playing like today he will be one of the best. In the Premier League, you are talking about a lot of players with quality but he is one of the best, yes.” Benitez has no doubt about the value of his star goalscorer and believes Torres’s performances since arriving in a 24-million-pound switch from Atletico Madrid two years ago means he now looks a bargain. “He was cheap,” added the manager. “Very cheap. So we are happy, not just because of the price and the things he can do on the pitch. It is also his behaviour is very professional.” The victory helped Liverpool move another step towards overcoming the shock of suffering two early league defeats although Benitez admitted his side is currently showing defensive flaws. Jamie Carragher fouled Zavon Hines to allow Alessandro Diamanti to hit West Ham’s first equaliser from the penalty spot while Carlton Cole’s 45th minute header could also have been prevented. “I’m not worried about the other teams,” Benitez said. “My concern is if we can improve, if we can defend as a team well, we cannot make mistakes and we can continue scoring goals. You cannot influence the other games so it is better to focus on your own team.”
