REEL HERO Director Bhandit Rittakol, 58, dies a day after the debut screening of his latest film handit Rittakol left the world with several projects unfinished, notably his muchanticipated “Boonchu 10”, the second film in the revival of his long-running teen comedy series. His last work, “Ma Ha Nakorn”, screened on Wednesday – the day before he died – as part of the shorts anthology “Sawasdee Bangkok” which closed the Bangkok International Film Festival. Fans of the “Boonchu” franchise needn’t worry, though, as Bhandit’s dream for the next in the series will be carried through by Five Star film studio. He had already finished the pre-production of the film and done with the casting.
Triumphant return At 58, Bhandit had long been battling diabetes and heart and kidney disease, which sidelined him for a few years. But he returned last year to direct the hit “Boonchu 9”, which rebooted his successful teen comedy series of the 1980s and ’90s. Earlier this year he released the teen romance “ANueng Kidthueng Pen Yang Ying”, a revival of the “Miss You” film series which was also popular in the ’90s. A graduate of Assumption College, Bhandit stepped onto the career ladder as a reporter at The Nation in 1971. After a stint as a film critic, he abandoned newsprint for celluloid,

Katzumi Sato’s flight is due to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 3pm. “I am so glad and so excited,” said Keigo yesterday. “When I see my Dad, the first thing I’ll do is hug and kiss him.” Keigo’s search for his father made headlines in May. For the past few years, the boy has been selling fish food to tourists at Wat Tha Luang in Phichit’s Mueang district. Whenever he ran into Japanese visitors, he would produce a photo of his father hoping that someone might recognise him. Keigo’s Thai mother died several years ago, and though he’s been well cared for since then by his aunt, his hope of meeting his father has only grown.

After his quest caught the media’s attention, the Japanese embassy helped locate his father. Katzumi phoned the embassy in Bangkok on May 22 and talked for the first time with his son. He phoned again on Sunday to break the news of his trip. Yesterday, Keigo went shopping for gifts and new clothes to wear to greet his father. “I am going to give my Dad a little doll as a souvenir. I also plan to make papaya salad for him.” Keigo’s aunt, Pattama Jatupis, said she was overjoyed for her nephew. “He has been depressed for too long already,” she said.

Travolta says he was victim of attempted extortion Hollywood star John Travolta testified in a Bahamas court on Wednesday that he was the victim of an alleged US$25-million (Bt836-million) extortion scheme concerning the death of his son. The defendants allegedly threatened to make public details about the death of Jett Travolta, 16, if the money they demanded was not paid. The two-time Oscar-nominee, who starred in the hit films “Saturday Night Fever” and “Pulp Fiction”, testified that the paramedic, who attended son Jett, told him he would implicate Travolta in the boy’s death if the actor did not pay up. The scheme intended to “make me culpable in some way”, Travolta told the court. Jett Travolta died in January after suffering a seizure during a family vacation in the residence that the actor has at Old Bahama Bay. – A F P

former prosecutor says he made up a story he told a film crew about advising a judge handling Roman Polanski’s sex case to send the director to prison. In “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”, David F Wells is depicted as conferring with a trial judge more than 30 years ago about Polanski’s case. Wells said in the documentary that the judge took his advice in deciding to renege on a plea bargain and give Polanski additional prison time.
“I made that up to make the stuff look better,” Wells said. He also said he overstated his actions after being told the film would air in France, not the United States. The film aired on HBO.
Attorneys tried to dismiss case Wells’ statement on the documentary later became part of the basis for a move by Polanski’s attorneys to dismiss the case against the fugitive director, who was arrested in Switzerland on Saturday.
Wells, who retired more than two years ago, did not handle Polanski’s case but was assigned to the courtroom where it was heard and had frequent interactions with the now-deceased trial judge Laurence J Rittenband. “They interviewed me in the Malibu courthouse when I was still a DA, and I embellished a story,” Wells said about the film crew. “I’m a guy who cuts to the chase – I lied. It embarrasses the hell out of me.” Wells said he was sorry about making the comments for the documentary. Polanski is accused of plying a 13-year-old girl with champagne during a modelling shoot in 1977 and raping her.
Sex in a Tufts University dorm is fine. Sex in a Tufts dorm with your roommate present? That’s a no-no. This semester, the school has a new policy banning sexual activity while a roommate is in the room. Kim Thurler, a Tufts University spokeswoman, said the school issued the new rule after a dozen or so complaints in the past three years. “It’s really about respect and consideration,” Thurler said. The new policy concerning overnight guests reads: “You may not engage in sexual activity while your roommate is present in the room.” It mentions no consequences if the rule is broken, however. Alyza DelPan-Monley, 20, a philosophy major, agreed that the policy is more about showing respect for roommates than limiting sexual activity. Freshman Jon Levinson, 18, said discussions about dormroom sex etiquette should be kept between roommates. “I don’t believe it’s the university’s place to determine what goes on in a room,” Levinson said. – AP

f you’re looking for a funfilled weekend that will satisfy your soul but doesn’t involve a long drive from Bangkok, look no further than the Lotus Festival. Taking place today and tomorrow in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district, this annual celebration marks the end of three-month-long Buddhist Lent retreat. The Lotus Festival, or Rab Bua, harks back to the days when the river was a focal point of daily life. It takes place around Wat Bang Phli Yai, aka Wat Luang Phor To, and the old marketplace, which borders the Samrong canal. According to folklore, lotus fields covered much of Bang Phli, a large wetland to the east of Bangkok, a century ago. Once a year in October, the farmers and traders would select the finest lotus flowers to honour the Luang Phor To Buddha. The lotus fields have mostly been cleared to make way for industrial and housing estates. Religious beliefs have not been eroded though, and the Luang Phor To Buddha is still honoured every October with piles of blooms. The festival draws thousands of devotees alike. As the sun rises tomorrow morning, locals will line the banks of the Samrong canal offering lotuses that you can throw on the passing boat, which carries a replica of the sacred Luang Por To. “It tends to be a bit of a hitor-miss affair, as there are always too many people trying to

She’s probably your soulmate.” There’s also phleng rua folk music, old-time games like saba thoi and saba bon, as well as beauty contests, boat races, a tug-of-war and boat decorating.
One highlight is “sea boxing”, in which two combatants straddle a wooden bar over the water and trying to push each other off. Of course there will be plenty of food, like traditional desserts curries and barbecued seafood.

on’t keep making a fool of yourself by telling people the Mai Tai is Thailand’s national cocktail – in fact, as the Tourism Authority announced to measured fanfare recently – it’s the Siam Sunray. The Mai Tai is something that Trader Vic, the boozy entrepreneur who founded a global chain of restaurants, concocted in the 1940s in California, especially for some visiting Tahitian VIPs. One of them tasted it and declared, “Maita’i roa!” which means “very good”, and a massively popular drink was born – one that has nothing to do with Thailand or its silk. It was left to Thai bartenders (and drinkers) to come up with a signature cocktail for the Kingdom, but being one of the world’s top five hardest-drinking nations, we were, you know, busy. Heady Thai whiskey and/or rum seemed an obvious choice. These spirits were already the base ingredients of numerous cocktails thanks to their distinctive aroma and taste. But mixing them with soda or cola seemed too mundane, and certainly it’s a combination you find on every street corner and at full-moon parties too. Enter Smirnoff, which started serving vodka-based Siam Sunrays in hotel bars and restaurants last year. The Europeans had begun adding Asian herbs to drinks, and that’s what dictates the taste of a Siam Sunray. The cocktail fuses cubes if muddled young ginger, lemongrass, fresh lime, Kaffir lime leaves and a tiny bit of chilli with coconut liquor. This is served in a highball glass with lots of ice and a splash of soda on top. You have to double-strain the drink to remove the bits of herbs. Refreshing and (seemingly) healthy, the drink is definitely for tipplers with a sweet tooth.

We should cherish our bonds with the Filipinos, who are well ahead of us in some ways By Paisarn Likhtipreechakul S P E C I A L T O D A I LY XPRESS
M
y heart goes out to our Filipino brothers and sisters. I’m hoping that our government is in the process of sending help to cope with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ketsana. Kids in my younger days were taught that, of all peoples in the world, Filipinos look the most like Thais. I suppose some ultra-nationalistic agenda embedded in primaryschool education precluded immediate neighbours like Laos and Cambodians. As I grew up, the knowledge of the Filipinos’ fight for democracy – not dissimilar to ours – made the emotional bond even stronger. This devastating flood came only two months after the republic lost her beloved president, Corazon Auquino, who led the world’s first colour revolution and also gave the country its first human-rights commission in 1986. Her funeral was a time of mourning for the whole nation. The arrival of democracy after decades of autocratic Marcos rule paved way for the
blossoming of gay identities in the Philippines. Manila boasts Asia’s first and longest-running gay-pride march, inaugurated in 1994 and still going strong, with many LGBT organisations and equality-minded non-gay groupsparticipating. In next year’s senatorial election, Ang Ladlad, an LGBT political party, is eyeing seats reserved for minority groups – a constitutional provision that Thailand could emulate. In addition, the Filipino news media are among Asia’s most liberal. Many excellent gay-theme films came out of the Philippines in recent years. One I had the chance to watch was Joselito Altarejo’s “Ang Lalake sa Parola” (“The Man in the Lighthouse”), about a city-dweller who falls in love with a lighthouse keeper while on vacation. The film tackles various issues honestly and realistically through the characters, who experience gay life in their own ways. Together, the would-be couple must face the realities of romance across socio-economic classes and vastly different backgrounds. The 20-year-old light-keep-
er Mateo, played by handsome Harry Laurel, must come to grips with his emerging identity while hoping to be accepted by the father who left him as a child. The identity of the mythical Lighthouse Fairy – the surrealistic element of the movie – is revealed at the very end, nicely providing a conceptual skeleton to the whole story. Along the way we’re also treated to a lot of flesh in steamy love scenes that still
leave just enough to the imagination. “Ang Lalake sa Parola” is light-years ahead of Thai cinema, which continues to caricature gays and katoey for cheap laughs. Seen from this particular lighthouse, these excuses for a movie appear not unlike floating garbage in a rushing flood. No one would miss this trash. Times are changing and, although you still have some things to contend with, you can rest assured everything will work in your favour. GEMINI ** May 21-June 20 Don’t bend to someone’s whims. Playing emotional games will lead to heartache and loss. Say what’s on your mind even if it does cause a rift in your relationship with someone. Australia qualified for the Champions Trophy semi-finals with a thrilling two-wicket win over Pakistan at SuperSport Park Wednesday thanks to a last-ball bye. The defending champions restricted Pakistan to 205-6 off 50 overs, appeared to be coasting home with 140 runs on the board, seven wickets in hand and 112 balls to face. But as the Pakistani bowlers led by Saeed Ajmal came alive, wickets tumbled and Australia entered the final over needing four runs to win a match transformed into a thriller after being tedious to watch for so long. Tail-enders Brett Lee and Nathan Hauritz picked off singles against superb bowling from Umar Gul and tight fielding to reach 206-8 in the best match so far of the tournament. – AFP

GILLES GROWLS Frenchman gets his teeth into first rival in Thailand Open By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam D A I L Y X P R E S S , Nonthaburi
W
olverine look-alike Gilles Simon of France won his maiden match at the US$608,500 PTT Thailand Open by outclassing American Kevin Kim 6-2 6-2 in the second round at Muang Thong Thani yesterday. The Frenchman, who admits that fans sometimes mistake him for the X-Men character, showed no signs of the knee injury that forced him to retire from a match against Juan Carlos Ferrero at the US Open a month ago. His high-velocity game was too much for the Korean-descended Kim. “It’s always tough to play the first match in a tournament, especially after retiring from injury in the last one. I didn’t know what to expect, but I played a good match,’’ said the 24-year-old, who wrapped up proceedings in just 61 minutes. But the former world No 6 still
had to keep an ice pack handy after the match for fear that the problem might flare up again. “My knee is still shaky but I tried not to think about it. I could play today but sometimes I wake up in the morning and feel the pain,’’ said Simon, who plans to undergo treatment at the end of the season. Giant American John Isner proved that big serves are not the only weapon in his armoury by employing an attacking array of groundstrokes to get rid of Mischa Zverev of Germany 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes. “I felt a lot more confident on the court after practice that’s helped me get used to the bounce,’’ said the 2.06mtall player, who also says he’s finally got over his jet lag. “I took two days to get acclimatised. Now I don’t see myself falling asleep in the locker room at 4pm like in the last couple days,’’ said the eighth seed, who takes on Serbian fourth seed Viktor Troicki in the next round. Andreas Beck of Germany
shook off a brief lapse in concentration in the second set tie-break to beat American lucky-loser Donald Young 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 to set up a quarter-final clash with Austrian Jurgen Melzer. Marat Safin’s last bid for the Thailand Open was cut short when the crowd favourite went down 3-6 6-7 (4-7) to Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland. The tournament was officially declared open yesterday evening by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at a ceremony that featured Safin, Simon, Danai Udomchoke and Miss Thailand contestants.
Monfils blows through Frenchman Gael Monfils punished Martin Vassallo Arguello with 14 break points en route to a 6-4 6-2 victory at the Malaysia Open yesterday, setting up a quarter-final with top seed Nikolay Davydenko. Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych reached the last eight, but had to go the distance to overcome German Simon Greul 6-3 4-6 6-3 at the Putra stadium.
After 10 days, the aggregate points of each participating reader will be counted. The two readers with the highest points will win the Bt45,500 Longines Sport Collection Conquest (lady) and the Bt38,500 Longines Sport Collection HydroConquest (gentleman) respectively. WOLFSBURG TAMED Man Utd comeback sealed by Carrick; Milan humbled A F P , Paris
anchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid kept up their 100 per cent start in the Champions League on Wednesday – but the English pair both had to scrap for narrow wins over Wolfsburg and Apoel Nicosia. Michael Carrick secured a 21 win for United as the English Premier League champions came back from a goal down to edge their German opponents at Old Trafford. Carrick swept home a fine strike 12 minutes from the end, after Ryan Giggs’s deflected free-kick had cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s shock 57thminute opener for the visitors. United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, chasing his third triumph in the event after successes in 1999 and 2008, paid tribute to his side, and Giggs in particular, after the Welsh winger scored his 150th goal for the club. “I thought it was just a matter of time before we did score,” Ferguson told ITV. “They never give in – they always keep on playing.” Giggs, however, was dismissive of his landmark goal. “Obviously, I was proud to do it, but it was more important we won the game,” said the 35-year-old, who added: “We showed great character to come back”. United’s vanquished 2008 final opponents Chelsea had a first-half goal from Nicolas Anelka to thank for a 1-0 win away to the Cypriots of Apoel Nicosia.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, left, celebrates with team-mate Kaka after scoring. Carlo Ancelotti suggested his Chelsea had had an eye on a weekend league tussle with Liverpool as they managed to do just enough on Cyprus. “I am not satisfied because we have to play better with more control and courage. We will not play like today [against Liverpool], we will play better for sure,” he stressed. Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Kaka once for Real Madrid as the Spaniards, desperate to add a tenth crown after seven barren seasons in Europe, dispatched Marseille 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bayern Munich’s 0-0 draw at home to Juventus in Wednesday’s Champions League clash could have cost them the services of winger Arjen Robben for a while, according to coach Louis van Gaal. Robben only arrived at Bayern from Real Madrid last month, but he hobbled off just before the break in the Group A match at Munich’s Allianz Arena with an injury to his right knee leaving van Gaal far from optimistic. “I think it is a serious injury – it doesn’t look good,” said van Gaal with more information expected to be released later yesterday. Bayern dominated the first half, but failed to hit the back of the net to make their advantage pay off as Juventus returned to Turin with a point. “In the first half, we played outstandingly well against a top team, but we did not get the win,” said van Gaal. “We were dominant and Juventus did not create many chances.” For Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara, leaving Germany with a point was an acceptable result as his side are third in the table with two points from two games. “We can live with the point and we are content,” said Ferrara. But for Juventus playmaker Diego, who was taken off in the second-half after a typically dynamic performance, the draw was disappointing. “We are not completely content, because we wanted to win here,” said the Brazilian. – A F P
Owen injured as sceptical Cappello looks on A P , Manchester, England

Michael Owen, left, is replaced by Dimitar Berbatov.
ichael Owen’s faint hopes of an England recall were dealt a huge blow when he succumbed to injury within 20 minutes of only his third start for Manchester United on Wednesday. And after aggravating a groin strain and looking at three weeks out, the 29-year-old Owen was forced to limp off the Old Trafford turf right in
front of England coach Fabio Capello. This wasn’t just a wasted opportunity to impress Capello, but a setback that will have reinforced the Italian’s fitness fears about the injury-prone striker ahead of next year’s World Cup. Owen, who made the surprise free move to United from Newcastle in July, has been overlooked by Capello since
making the last of his 89 international appearances against France in March 2008, early in the coach’s reign. Indeed, Owen’s fortunes seemed to be on the ascendancy before this fresh blow. But he managed just two touches in his 19 minutes and 37 minutes on the pitch against Wolfsburg – neither of any significance before he was replaced by Dimitar Berbatov,
who roused United after a lax start. Starting Owen had been a gamble for United manager Alex Ferguson since he had to pass a late fitness test. “Michael felt a slight groin injury after training on Sunday,” Ferguson said. “He thought he was fine to play but on a wet surface, when he tried to turn quickly, it came back again. It is not a serious one.”

READY TO DELIVER Pressure is already on Alonso to win Ferrari the title A P , Suzuka, Japan
N
ew Ferrari signing Fernando Alonso is already under pressure to deliver the Italian team a Formula One title. Ferrari confirmed yesterday that Alonso would leave Renault and join the team for 2010 on a three-year contract. There had been a previous agreement – made public yesterday – for him to join in 2011, but he will arrive a year early after Ferrari agreed to pay out the 2010 contract of ousted driver Kimi Raikkonen. “There will be a pressure to win titles,” Alonso said from Suzuka, site of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. “At Ferrari it is not enough to win one race per year or anything like that. The pressure will be there to be champion again. In the next three years

But Alonso foresees no problem. “It will work,” Alonso said.
“Felipe we know is a great driver, a quick driver but also a good personality. He will be absolutely fine.” Alonso had a fractious relationship with Lewis Hamilton in their one season together at McLaren in 2007, when the team did not give preference to either driver. The Spaniard said he had learnt from that experi-
ence. “It will not happen again,” Alonso said. “This is a very different history. I am also more prepared than I was two years ago. It will be fine. “Ferrari is more important than any driver in the car. It doesn’t matter if you are quicker or slower than your teammate – the Ferrari people want to see a red car in front of the other cars, it doesn’t matter which driver is driving.” Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said the AlonsoMassa partnership will be handled in the same even-handed manner as the RaikkonenMassa one. Asked how the team would manage a potential clash of egos, Domenicali said: “The same way we controlled Felipe and Kimi for the past two years.” Raikkonen grinned when asked whether the sponsorship deal influenced his departure and Alonso’s arrival. “I know more or less the reason, and it’s nothing to do with my racing,” Raikkonen said.

Kimi considers switching to a rally car Kimi Raikkonen said yesterday he is relaxed about what the future holds after agreeing to an early departure from Ferrari, and suggested he may switch to rallying. The Finn said nothing had been decided but he could go rallying, stay in Formula One, or even retire from racing altogether if he felt that way. “For the moment, I haven’t decided what I want to do next, whether I want to continue racing or not. I had a contract for next year, but now I don’t, so that changes things. So maybe I race, maybe I do not.” He said switching to the World Rally Championship was a possibility. “Yes, there’s a chance to do that, but there’s as much of a chance that I continue in Formula One. Raikkonen said there were many reasons for his decision to agree to terminate his Ferrari contract one year early. “I have nothing bad to say about them.”

ARSENE WHO?! Wenger defies early doubters to become longest-serving manager at Arsenal AP, London
T
hirteen years after he was greeted with the headline “Arsene Who?”, Arsene Wenger made Arsenal history yesterday. Having arrived in English football a virtual unknown, he is now the longest serving manager of one of the world’s most famous clubs. Wenger has overtaken George Allison to reach the milestone of 4,749 days in charge and is as revered at the club as Herbert Chapman, the manager who led the Gunners to three straight league titles in the 1930s. Three weeks short of his 60th birthday, Wenger could be forgiven for thinking about retirement after winning three

Premier League and four FA Cup titles, leading Arsenal through an entire league campaign without a defeat and also to a Champions League final. But Wenger refuses to dwell on the past and his previous successes. He is out to prove to the world that he can win titles with the team of young Arsenal players he has carefully nurtured since they arrived at the
club, some of them barely out of school. While his main rivals think nothing about spending about £30 million on a new player, Wenger is keeping the Arsenal chequebook shut, stoically relying on his methods and the potential of these youngsters. Wenger was rejected by the Gunners a year before he arrived in October 1996, when foreign coaches were
rare in English football. “They gave the job to Bruce Rioch and maybe he was a better candidate at the time. I was not disappointed at all.” When he returned, Wenger transformed a side that had a reputation for winning games methodically rather than with style. He inherited a defence of 30year-olds but got them playing more attractive football and, within two years of taking over, had led the Gunners to the league and FA Cup double. It was the start of an amazing era as Wenger’s Arsenal became one of the most creative and imaginative teams in the game, slicing through even the meanest defences with mesmerising passes and scoring memorable goals. While the Arsenal fans love his style of football and relish the potential of his young side, they have also become frustrated that the Gunners have not won a major title for four years.
Dreaded vote confidence for Milan coach Following AC Milan’s embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to Swiss minnows FC Zurich in the Champions League, the Italian club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani renewed his faith in coach Leonardo. In most other walks of life that would provoke a sense of relief in a person whose job was on the line but in football it often precipitates a severing of ties. “We can do nothing but confirm our faith in Leonardo,” said Galliani. “At the moment things are going badly. We’ve lived through many good years but now things aren’t going well. How will we end this crisis? We’ll see.” The obvious and decidedly Italian option would usually be to fire the coach and hope the shock and some new direction helps the players to raise their game. But Milan are simply unable or unwilling to spend money and Leonardo presents their cheapest coaching option.
