ears ago, when Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck – the fifth Dragon King of Bhutan – visited the Kingdom, Thais expressed great admiration for him. But how many people really know that his lovely cousin, Princess Yiwang Pindarica, is a student in Thailand? dants ready to serve her. But she usually makes up her room herself and uses just a two-row passenger truck when she goes shopping. She lives a simple life.

The princess savours Thai food, with Som Tam (spicy papaya salad) being her favourite dish. In fact, she has also cooked Som Tam and Bhutanese food on a television show. She likes playing badminton, basketball and volleyball, and is a fan of Manchester United, with her favourite player being Rio Ferdinand. She also loves to read and sometimes watches movies. Since she studies Media Communications, which focusses on advertising, the

princess’s goal after graduation is to improve the media in Bhutan. “We are a democratic constitutional monarchy and the media is given freedom and treated with much more leniency than before. I can help improve our media using the knowledge I gain here.” The princess aims to promote her country’s alluring scenery, rich culture and traditions, as Bhutanese people are very welcoming, friendly and – like Thais – love their King. She said that after gaining working experience for a few years she would probably come back to study for a master degree in Media Communications.

Video of baby surviving train crash stresses mum he mother of an Australian baby which miraculously survived a collision with a train is still recovering from the experience and becomes upset by footage of the accident. The six-month-old boy, who has not been named, was strapped into a pram which rolled away from his mother and into the path of an oncoming train at Melbourne’s Ashburton station on Thursday. The train driver slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid hitting

in a home-made balloon. Millions tuned in to cable television to watch the drama unfold. More than 80 law enforcement officers, news helicopters and search crews tracked the balloon as it soared 762 metres for more than 80 kilometres before landing in a field near Denver International Airport.

Sixteen-year-old Australian sailor Jessica Watson waves as she sails her bright pink 10.23-metre yacht past the Opera House.

A hoax? The balloon was empty, prompting concerns the boy had fallen from it. Several hours later, Falcon came down from an attic space in his home where he had been hiding, sparking joyous scenes. Heene brushed off reporters’ shouted questions apart from one which asked him to confirm “once and for all” if the balloon drama had been a hoax. “Absolutely no hoax.”

A 16-year-old Australian steered her bright pink yacht out of Sydney Harbour yesterday to start her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world. Jessica Watson’s plan to make a 38,000-kilometre journey through some of the world’s most treacherous waters sparked a debate in Australia about whether someone so young should be allowed to try such a potentially dangerous feat. Watson and her family insist she is an experienced and capable sailor who has studied navigation, electronics and maritime safety procedures. Although she will sail solo and unassisted, she will be in constant contact with her support team via radio, e-mail and a blog. After hugging her parents goodbye, Watson sailed her 10-metre yacht out of Sydney under gray skies and slightly choppy seas. She smiled and waved to scores of well-wishers who lined parts of the shore, and boats that gathered on the harbour.

“I think a lot of Australians are nervous for Jessica. I’m nervous for her,” Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard told reporters. “But my words at this stage, given that she’s determined to go, would be to wish her the best of luck and to urge her to keep safe.” Watson’s plans suffered several setbacks before she finally left. Last month, her yacht collided with a cargo ship as she sailed toward Sydney to make final preparations – an accident that triggered some calls for her to abandon the attempt. More recently, strong winds in Sydney delayed her planned departure last week. The first leg of Watson’s journey will take her past northern New Zealand, then Fiji and Samoa. – A P

merican singer and pianist Norah Jones has a new album coming out and wants Daily Xpress readers to know all about it. “The Fall” takes a different path from her jazzy debut “Come Away with Me” and countrytinged “Feels Like Home”, and isn’t as dark as “Not Too Late”. Here, the multiple-award-winning Jones steps lively into rock, aided by a new band and the likes of alternative country-rocker Ryan Adams. “We just finished the album about a month ago,” she tells us by phone, “so it’s a big turnaround for me to be working again because I’ve been off for the last few years.” What were you doing on your break?

XTRA

I had to keep myself a little busy – otherwise I would have wanted to go to work again, and I didn’t want to do that! I had a band and we played country music, covering Johnny Cash songs and others. We played a few times a month in New York, and that was fun for me. I bought a dog too, and it’s such a big deal – those who have dogs would know. It’s my first dog! Were you being pressured for an album?

It didn’t really feel that way. It would have been so difficult if it did. There are a lot of factors involved making a successful album. Hopefully they’re good, but that’s not always the case. There are things that are out of your control. You just do the best you can and enjoy what you do. That will

I just wanted to try something new. I’ve reached a period in my music and my life when it’s time to try different things and work with different people. There’s a danger when you try something new or go too far or do something that’s not natural, but the great thing about all this is that it feels so natural. It felt right. You collaborated with rapper QTip on his “Life is Better”.

We have mutual friends. I was happy with it. It was fun. Any more movie work coming up?

I’m not planning to do any more acting right now. It’s something I really had an amazing time doing, but it’s such a big commitment. If I were to do it again, I would really have to have enough time off to commit myself to it.

Post Today photographer and political pundit Chamlong Boonsong picked up the Bad Performance Award on a junket to Malaysia last week – but actually he didn’t do that badly. Chamlong led 12 other Thai journos in competitive action against their Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts. The events were boxing over the water, climbing a greased pole and grating a coconut. The fiftysomething newspaperman was quickly dunked by a younger pugilist and fared little better at scaling oil, but then they brought out the coconuts. Chamlong won the nutgrating race, using one of those old-fashioned wooden “rabbits”. No one else even knew what it was.

Australian Casey Stoner reigned at Phillip Island for a third straight year with victory over world champion Valentino Rossi in the Australian MotoGP yesterday. Stoner, the 2007 world champion, dominated his home MotoGP, leading for all but one lap of the 27-lap race to claim a sweet, 1.935 seconds victory over the six-times world champion. While Stoner leapfrogged Dani Pedrosa into third place on the world championship standings, Rossi extended his lead to 38 points over Jorge Lorenzo after his Spanish Yamaha team-mate crashed out on the first bend and finished pointless. Rossi could wrap up this year’s world title in the second-last MotoGP of the season in Malaysia next weekend with only a maximum of 50 championship points now on offer. – AFP

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is disappointed with the display of his defence.

CRACKDOWN! Ancelotti promises Blues back four will do a better job AFP, Birmingham, England

C

arlo Ancelotti has pledged to eradicate the dreadful defending that is threatening to increase the pressure on the Italian after the second successive Premier League defeat away from home. Saturday’s 2-1 loss here to Aston Villa combined with Manchester United’s win over Bolton saw Chelsea surrender top spot in the table. Defeat at Villa Park meant six of the eight goals conceded by Chelsea this season have come from set plays, evoking memories of the defensive problems that ultimately ended Luiz Felipe Scolari’s reign at Stamford Bridge. James Collins delivered the killer blow with his first goal in four seasons to extend Aston Villa’s unbeaten home run to six games and heighten optimism that Martin O’Neill can unsettle the established order. But the worry lines on

Ancelotti’s forehead will become more pronounced with further performances like this, despite Didier Drogba’s seventh goal of the campaign gifting Chelsea the advantage. Richard Dunne capitalised on dreadful defending to equalise and Collins pounced early in the second-half to condemn Chelsea to another alarming defeat on the road. Two seasons ago Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich stormed out of Villa Park in a rage after a 2-0 defeat, with then manager Jose Mourinho sacked days later. Italian boss Ancelotti is under no immediate danger but the alarm bells will surely be ringing already following Chelsea’s insipid defeat at Wigan. And ahead of their Champions League game with Atletico Madrid tomorrow, it promises to be a busy few days on the training ground as Ancelotti works on his problems. He said: “I am disappointed because Chelsea played a good match. We lost this game on the set plays and I don’t like to lose games on set plays.

“Aston Villa did a very good job. On the set plays we need to do better because we can. Those are the questions from this match. “The first goal was from a set play and we need to improve on the situation. We have to pay more attention and more concentration in the box. “We work every time on the set plays but we have to improve. We need more focus. At Wigan the first goal was the same. “When we lose a game for sure we are not happy but I think that until this moment the team has played very well and done a very good job. “But there are things we can improve on,” the former AC Milan manager added. “I’m sure the players will do this in the next game.” This was no more than Villa deserved, however, and O’Neill possesses a vibrant squad that could deliver on their mission to gatecrash the Big Four – or Five, as it may be now. O’Neill believes he has his best squad yet after three years in charge.

he curtain came down on the Thailand Premier League, with Muang Thong United celebrating their first ever league title with a 2-0 victory over BEC Tero Sasana. The home fixture at Thunder Dome stadium against BEC, who were flying high in fourth place before the match, was meaningless as Muang Thong were assured of the league success after their 2-1 win over Osotspa last week. However, a goal from either side of half-time ensured the champions ended the season on a winning note, their 19th win out of 30 matches. Pattaya United were also in celebratory mood after they confirmed their place in the top-flight next season at the expense of Chula United, whom they defeated 2-1 in the relegation battle match. Sri Racha FC fans had no reason to celebrate despite their team managing a 3-1 away win at Osotspa. Bangkok United’s 1-1 draw with Samut Song Khram meant the Eastern side joined Chula and already-relegated Nakhon Pathom into Division One. Police FC, Royal Thai Army and Si Sa Ket were promoted to the first-tier league next season.

Beach-ball goal joins blooper list

DEFLATED BY BALL Everton fan beaches Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes AFP, Sunderland, England

nstant notoriety is guaranteed for a young spectator who effectively condemned Liverpool to a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland here at the Stadium of Light. The ‘supporter’, who was wearing a dark blue top – the colour of Liverpool’s city rivals Everton – has been captured on YouTube throwing a beach ball into the Liverpool penalty area during a Sunderland attack. He could not have imagined the consequences before a shot from Darren Bent struck the ball and diverted it past goalkeeper Pepe Reina for the decisive goal in Saturday’s match. It was an incident which provoked surprising responses from the two managers, with Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez remarkably sanguine about a goal that brought about his team’s third successive defeat. Asked if the goal should have been disallowed, Benitez said: “It’s a technical question. It could be a goal, but it’s difficult to say. In this case, I think it should be a goal.” Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, was not so certain after speaking to a referee after the game about “outside interference”. He said: “I’ve been told the laws of the game state it should have been disallowed and the game restarted with a drop ball. But does anybody know that rule?” Bent didn’t care who was right. He was just happy to claim a goal which meant he’d scored in each of Sunderland’s

It also moved him level with Liverpool’s Fernando Torres as the Premier League’s top scorer with eight goals. Bent, who is staking a powerful claim for an England return, said: “It was a strange goal, but I will take it.” While it was a freakish winner, the outcome of the game was the right one with Sunderland confirming the promise they showed in drawing at champions Manchester United a fortnight earlier. They outclassed a Liverpool team who were deprived of Torres and Steven Gerrard through injuries and could not fill the gap in class left by those

two internationals. This was their third successive defeat and their fourth in the league this season – and no team has won the championship after losing so many times in the past decade. However, Benitez is refusing to accept that Liverpool’s pursuit of the title is over. “This is a bad defeat, but in a normal season, teams at the top would be wining every single game. “This is a bit different. Chelsea have lost twice and I’ve seen a lot of teams at the top losing games. If we win the next two or three games, we could be top of the table. It’s a question of keeping our confidence and working hard.”

Sunderland striker Darren Bent scored his team’s winner against Liverpool on Saturday when his shot was deflected into the net off a beach-ball thrown from the crowd. Here are four more bizarre Premier League goals: 1. Stan Collymore, Blackburn Rovers v Liverpool, February 1996 - Collymore’s tame leftfooted pea-roller was trundling straight into the arms of Blackburn goalkeeper Tim Flowers, before it hit a mark on the six-yard line that Flowers himself had made and skipped over the keeper’s shoulder and into the net. 2. Steve McManaman, Tottenham v Liverpool, December 1996 – England midfielder McManaman’s speculative long-distance effort looked to have been covered by keeper Ian Walker, but a divot saw it fly up off the turf, over Walker’s out-stretched grasp and into the net. 3. Olof Mellberg, Birmingham City v Aston Villa, September 2002 – Villa defender Mellberg looked to pick out his goalkeeper Peter Enckelman with a throw-in from the righthand touchline but the Finn allowed the ball to run under his foot and into the net. 4. Paul Robinson, Tottenham v Watford, March 2007 – Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson’s free-kick from deep inside the Spurs half took a freak bounce on the edge of the Watford penalty area and looped over his opposite number Ben Foster, who smiled ruefully as he retrieved the ball from his goal.

Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez celebrates his goal.

arcelona’s perfect start to the Spanish League season ended on Saturday when the champions were held to a 0-0 draw at Valencia. A seventh successive win would have been Barcelona’s best ever beginning to a league campaign, but Pep Guardiola’s side had to settle for a draw against a resolute Valencia side and now sit one point above

Real Madrid at the summit. “We knew it would be a difficult game here and it was,” said Barcelona’s Dani Alves. “There are a lot of teams that are going to compete for this title and it will be a long fight.” Earlier Real captain Raul celebrated breaking the club’s alltime appearance record with a brace as Real bounced back from their Sevilla defeat with a 4-2 home win over Valladolid.

“It was a good victory and a much-needed one,” said Raul. “Games like this after the international fixtures can be dangerous but we won and that is all that counts.” Xavi shrugged off a knock to start for Barcelona but Thierry Henry missed out through injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic began on the substitutes bench. Real did not have such problems in front of goal with Raul

overtaking the record of Manolo Sanchis with his 711th appearance in the white shirt and scoring twice inside five first half minutes (13min, 18min) as Real made hard work of overcoming Valladolid. Sevilla’s joy at beating Real two weeks ago was short-lived as the title hopefuls came crashing back down to earth with a 1-0 loss at Deportivo La Coruna.

A-ROD METTLE Yankees win as throwing error by the Angels’ Macier Izturis ends the game AFP, New York

lex Rodriguez belted a game-tying home run in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees went on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 in 13 innings yesterday to stretch their lead in the American League Championship Series. A throwing error by the Angels’ Macier Izturis brought the game to an end after five hours and 10 minutes – the latter innings played in cold, steady rain. The victory kept the Yankees unbeaten in this postseason and gave them a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series from which the winners advance to the World Series.

Choke-uthit supreme

“Wow, what a game,” Rodriguez said. Pinch-hitter Jerry Hairston jnr had opened the bottom of the 13th with a single off losing pitcher Ervin Santana. Brett Gardner sacrificed and Robinson Cano was intentionally walked to bring up Melky Cabrera. Cabrera hit a bouncing grounder between first and second and Izturis made the dubious decision to throw back across his body to get the force out at second base. The throw eluded shortstop Erick Aybar and trickled behind third base, where Chone Figgins fumbled it. Hairston raced home for the winning

much,” Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. “You’re not going to turn two.” While sloppy defence doomed the Angels, it was Rodriguez who kept the Yankees alive long enough to capitalise. He led off the bottom of the 11th with a homer against major league saves leader Brian Fuentes to tie it up again. Figgins had given the Angels a brief 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the top of the frame off Alfredo Aceves. It was Figgins’s first hit in 19 at-bats in these play-offs. Fuentes came on to try and close it out, but Rodriguez smacked an 0-2 pitch into the

front row of the right-field seats. “As soon as he tied it, we knew we were going to win this game,” Hairston said. “We don’t give up. We really don’t.” It was the third homer of this post-season for Rodriguez, who has struggled in past play-offs. The three-time Most Valuable Player has at least one hit and one RBI in every playoff game this year. The series now shifts to Anaheim for game three tomorrow, where Jared Weaver is slated to start for the Angels against Andy Pettitte. The expected balmy southern California weather will be a welcome change after two games in wintry New York.

Choke-uthit of the Flamingo Team was not expected to make his mark in the Pro Runabout GP class as he was sent to gain experience and make the world’s top five in the near future. She found her touch in the quarter-finals to send Chinese Zhang Qiang, silver medallist in the Belgrade Universiade, packing 4-1. However, Buttree

found Korean Park Hyo-ji, winner at the Belgrade Universiade, too strong. After a 4-all tie, the Thai fighter suffered a three-point head kick to go down tamely 7-4 in the semi-finals. In the men’s finweight (under-54kg), Thailand’s Chutcha-

However, he picked up the injury during the fight with the former world silver medallist from Russia. In the quarter-finals, the Pathum Thani-born fighter outclassed Taiwan Hsu Chia 85. Against Afghan Haidari Mahmood, bronze medallist in the world junior meet in Izmir, Turkey, last year, a spirited Chutchawal survived the first round before the pain took its toll on him. BANGKOK

THESPORT Nikolay Davydenko beat Rafael Nadal in a Master 1000 final for the second time in two years yesterday, claiming his fourth title since July with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 success in Shanghai. The loss, while not what he had hoped, was far from discouraging for world No 2 Nadal, playing only his second event since taking a month off to heal an abdominal muscle problem. He lost to Davydenko for the title at Miami, 2008. “I did well and played a good match. I don’t like to lose but I had my chances,” said the Spaniard, who has few complaints about his performance despite the outcome. “This was the first time since my injuries that I was competing 100 per cent against a top player. “My attitude and my physical condition were fine, it has been a very good season for me. I’m still working to better my game.” Davydenko added Nadal to a Shanghai victim’s list which included second seed Novak Djokovic in a three-hour semi-final the day before. Davydenko went up an early break in the first set but lost it before the opener went into a tiebreaker and ended after 75 minutes with a backhand winner. “I thought I was losing my chances, when he broke me back,” said Davydenko. “I was just trying to hold him off, wondering how long I could stay in the match.” But the Russian moved ahead 4-2 in the second set to consolidate the win. “It’s been a miracle,” said Davydenko. “I’ve beaten Nadal in two Masters finals, maybe that shows something. I’ve won 18 titles in my career and I find that amazing.” The Russian, chasing one of three spots in next month’s ATP season wrap-up event in London, won his fourth title of the season, all coming since July. The win denied Nadal his first success since Rome in late April and kept the world No 2 on five titles in 2009. Meanwhile in Linz, Austria, Yanina Wickmayer defeated unseeded Czech Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-4 to win the WTA event at Linz yesterday for the second title of her career, after victory at Estoril in May. Meanwhile in Osaka, Japan, third-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia earned her first WTA singles title yesterday with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Italy’s Francesca Schiavone at the Japan Women’s Open.

Yankees prevail on Izturis’ error

Freak goal costs Liverpool dear

Coming through under pressure once again, Alex Rodriguez hit a tying home run in the 11th inning as the New York Yankees edged the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Maicer Izturis’ throwing error in the 13th for a 2-0 lead in the American League championship series. After the rain came and went on another chilly night, Yankees pulled out their latest late-inning thriller. >PAGE 27

Games of football can be lost in many ways, from a disputed penalty to a wonder strike and a tragic own goal but events at Sunderland brought a new meaning to the term “freak goal”. Darren Bent scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game, but the manner of it was controversial as his shot cannoned off a beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch by a fan. >PAGE 25
