ears ago, when Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck – the fifth Dragon King of Bhutan – visited the Kingdom, Thais expressed great admiration for him. But how many people really know that his lovely cousin, Princess Yiwang Pindarica, is a student in Thailand? The 21-year-old princess has been studying at Webster University Thailand in Hua Hin for the past two-and-a-half years, while her twin sister Princess Namsay Kumutha is a DAILY

student at the University of British Columbia, Canada. “Thailand is like a second home to me,” Princess Yiwang Pindarica told Daily Xpress and other Thai media during a recent interview. “I chose Thailand because I’m quite familiar with the country and Thailand is not very far from Bhutan.”

dants ready to serve her. But she usually makes up her room herself and uses just a two-row passenger truck when she goes shopping. She lives a simple life.
The princess savours Thai food, with Som Tam (spicy papaya salad) being her favourite dish. In fact, she has also cooked Som Tam and Bhutanese food on a television show. She likes playing badminton, basketball and volleyball, and is a fan of Manchester United, with her favourite player being Rio Ferdinand. She also loves to read and sometimes watches movies. Since she studies Media Communications, which focusses on advertising, the
princess’s goal after graduation is to improve the media in Bhutan. “We are a democratic constitutional monarchy and the media is given freedom and treated with much more leniency than before. I can help improve our media using the knowledge I gain here.” The princess aims to promote her country’s alluring scenery, rich culture and traditions, as Bhutanese people are very welcoming, friendly and – like Thais – love their King. She said that after gaining working experience for a few years she would probably come back to study for a master degree in Media Communications.

The six-month-old boy, who has not been named, was strapped into a pram which rolled away from his mother and into the path of an oncoming train at Melbourne’s Ashburton station on Thursday. The train driver slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid hitting

A 16-year-old Australian steered her bright pink yacht out of Sydney Harbour yesterday to start her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world. Jessica Watson’s plan to make a 38,000-kilometre journey through some of the world’s most treacherous waters sparked a debate in Australia about whether someone so young should be allowed to try such a potentially dangerous feat. Watson and her family insist she is an experienced and capable sailor who has studied navigation, electronics and maritime safety procedures. Although she will sail solo and unassisted, she will be in constant contact with her support team via radio, e-mail and a blog. After hugging her parents goodbye, Watson sailed her 10-metre yacht out of Sydney under gray skies and slightly choppy seas. She smiled and waved to scores of well-wishers who lined parts of the shore, and boats that gathered on the harbour.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said officers were preparing search warrants and drawing up charges against eccentric amateur scientist Richard Heene and unidentified members of his family. merican singer and pianist Norah Jones has a new album coming out and wants Daily Xpress readers to know all about it. “The Fall” takes a different path from her jazzy debut “Come Away with Me” and countrytinged “Feels Like Home”, and isn’t as dark as “Not Too Late”. Here, the multiple-award-winning Jones steps lively into rock, aided by a new band and the likes of alternative country-rocker Ryan Adams. “We just finished the album about a month ago,” she tells us by phone, “so it’s a big turnaround for me to be working again because I’ve been off for the last few years.” What were you doing on your break?

I had to keep myself a little busy – otherwise I would have wanted to go to work again, and I didn’t want to do that! I had a band and we played country music, covering Johnny Cash songs and others. We played a few times a month in New York, and that was fun for me. I bought a dog too, and it’s such a big deal – those who have dogs would know. It’s my first dog! Were you being pressured for an album?

You collaborated with rapper QTip on his “Life is Better”.
We have mutual friends. I was happy with it. It was fun. Any more movie work coming up?
I’m not planning to do any more acting right now. It’s something I really had an amazing time doing, but it’s such a big commitment. If I were to do it again, I would really have to have enough time off to commit myself to it.

One of the highlights is a salsa and Argentine tango extravaganza on November 6 in the two ballrooms of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit to the accompaniment of an Argentine tango band. The event is being organised by SalsaBangkok, a group of dance professionals dedicated to promoting cultural dances in Thailand, in collaboration with Argentinean Ambassador Felipe Frydman. Another highlight will be presented by Nestor Manuelian from Australia’s Modus Vivendi Dance Productions. A six-time Australian salsa champion, the Uruguayan-born Manuelian started dancing in 2002 and is
well regarded for his teaching and choreography. Mexican-American dance diva Ana Masacote, will demonstrate her sensual body movements in performances with her husband Joel Simeon, a dancer and musician. The couple, who run Boston-based Masacote Entertainment, regularly travel the world to perform and teach salsa. Artists from Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand will also perform. New York-based salsa DJ Henry Knowles will create an ambience for salseros. The four-day SalsaBangkok Fiesta also includes a social dance competition and dance lessons from international instructors. Classes range from beginner to advanced levels. The organiser’s words of wisdom are: “If you can walk, you can dance!”

Post Today photographer and political pundit Chamlong Boonsong picked up the Bad Performance Award on a junket to Malaysia last week – but actually he didn’t do that badly. Chamlong led 12 other Thai journos in competitive action against their Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts. The events were boxing over the water, climbing a greased pole and grating a coconut. The fiftysomething newspaperman was quickly dunked by a younger pugilist and fared little better at scaling oil, but then they brought out the coconuts. Chamlong won the nutgrating race, using one of those old-fashioned wooden “rabbits”. No one else even knew what it was.

Defeat at Villa Park meant six of the eight goals conceded by Chelsea this season have come from set plays, evoking memories of the defensive problems that ultimately ended Luiz Felipe Scolari’s reign at Stamford Bridge. He could not have imagined the consequences before a shot from Darren Bent struck the ball and diverted it past goalkeeper Pepe Reina for the decisive goal in Saturday’s match. It was an incident which provoked surprising responses from the two managers, with Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez remarkably sanguine about a goal that brought about his team’s third successive defeat. Asked if the goal should have been disallowed, Benitez said: “It’s a technical question. It could be a goal, but it’s difficult to say. In this case, I think it should be a goal.” Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, was not so certain after speaking to a referee after the game about “outside interference”. lex Rodriguez belted a game-tying home run in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees went on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 in 13 innings yesterday to stretch their lead in the American League Championship Series. A throwing error by the Angels’ Macier Izturis brought the game to an end after five hours and 10 minutes – the latter innings played in cold, steady rain. The victory kept the Yankees unbeaten in this postseason and gave them a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series from which the winners advance to the World Series.

We really don’t.” It was the third homer of this post-season for Rodriguez, who has struggled in past play-offs. The three-time Most Valuable Player has at least one hit and one RBI in every playoff game this year. The series now shifts to Anaheim for game three tomorrow, where Jared Weaver is slated to start for the Angels against Andy Pettitte. The expected balmy southern California weather will be a welcome change after two games in wintry New York.

Besides claiming the event he had never won in five years, Choke-uthit also put in a remarkable performance in the Pro Runabout Grand Prix, the biggest watercraft specific event in the jet sports world. Choke-uthit of the Flamingo Team was not expected to make his mark in the Pro Runabout GP class as he was sent to gain experience and make the world’s top five in the near future. THESPORT Nikolay Davydenko beat Rafael Nadal in a Master 1000 final for the second time in two years yesterday, claiming his fourth title since July with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 success in Shanghai. The loss, while not what he had hoped, was far from discouraging for world No 2 Nadal, playing only his second event since taking a month off to heal an abdominal muscle problem. He lost to Davydenko for the title at Miami, 2008. “I did well and played a good match. I don’t like to lose but I had my chances,” said the Spaniard, who has few complaints about his performance despite the outcome. “This was the first time since my injuries that I was competing 100 per cent against a top player. “My attitude and my physical condition were fine, it has been a very good season for me. I’m still working to better my game.” Davydenko added Nadal to a Shanghai victim’s list which included second seed Novak Djokovic in a three-hour semi-final the day before. Davydenko went up an early break in the first set but lost it before the opener went into a tiebreaker and ended after 75 minutes with a backhand winner. “I thought I was losing my chances, when he broke me back,” said Davydenko. “I was just trying to hold him off, wondering how long I could stay in the match.” But the Russian moved ahead 4-2 in the second set to consolidate the win. “It’s been a miracle,” said Davydenko. “I’ve beaten Nadal in two Masters finals, maybe that shows something. I’ve won 18 titles in my career and I find that amazing.” The Russian, chasing one of three spots in next month’s ATP season wrap-up event in London, won his fourth title of the season, all coming since July.
