he mercury is unlikely to soar any higher this year, given that coming rain should cool temperatures. “We may have already seen this year’s hottest day,” Weather Forecast Bureau director Somchai Baimuang said yesterday. In late March, average temperatures reached as high as 40.2 degrees Celsius in some areas of the country. But forecasters predicted April 27 – when the sun’s arc is at its highest – would be the year’s hottest day. “We have now found that a high-pressure ridge will likely hover over the country between April 24 and 26, dousing many areas with rain and preventing a spike in temperatures.”

he National Film Board is standing by its decision to ban “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” in Thailand, citing that its explicit sexual content goes against moral principles here. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initially gave “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” an NC-17 rating (banning viewers under 17) for “some graphic sexuality”. However, director Kevin Smith appealed and the film finally got an R with no cuts. The R, or “Restricted” rating, requires viewers under 17 years old to be accompanied by an adult.

Set in the United States, the comedy tells the story of friends embarking on a project to make a porn movie.

‘May encourage copycats’ “The screening of this film may encourage copycats here,” Culture Ministry permanent secretary Vira Rojpojchanarat said yesterday. The film’s distributor, M Pictures, argued that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” was a satirical take on contemporary US society and was suitable for viewers aged over 18. After the National Film Board decided to ban the film during its meeting on Monday, M Pictures appealed and a panel was set up to review the board’s ruling. After viewing the film, the panel upheld the decision to ban “Zack and Miri” from Thai screens.

he government will hold activities on May 5 to mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s coronation. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will chair the organising committee. “We expect more than 200,000 members of the public and government officials to join the events,” Deputy Government Spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said yesterday.

Unity and security “The monarchy is the unifying institution and is a key to national security,” Supachai said. A source said Abhisit advised his Cabinet members to wear colours that would not add heat to the country’s simmering political conflict. Yellow, the colour traditionally used to show loyalty to His Majesty, has become associated with the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in recent years. PAD supporters have previously rallied against Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies, while the redshirts of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship were vocal in their support for the former prime minister when they rioted earlier this month.

The sheriff said the boys had drowned and that investigators were checking her story. The boys – aged 2, 7 and 8 – were recovered from Lake Brewer after the car went into the water in a rural area in central Arkansas, and they were pronounced dead at a hospital. “It’s a terrible loss. This is a terrible thing,” Larry Hopkins, who identified himself as the boys’ grandfather, said through tears at the house. Fledgling versions of Similar Images and News Timeline made their way out of Google Labs, a place where engineers get to spend time tinkering with promising innovations. A Similar Images feature added to Google’s Image Search tool lets people scour the Internet for related photographs with a single computer

Video games addictive for some children D P A , San Francisco

A

new study has found that almost one in ten kids who play video games showed classic signs of addiction to the pastime, lying about their habit, failing in efforts to cut back and even stealing to buy new games. The study by Dr Douglas Gentile, a psychology professor at Iowa State University, was published in the journal Psychological Science and used data from a Harris Poll of nearly 1,200 children aged 8 to 18 across the US. The survey found that 88 per cent of US kids played video games at least occasionally, and on average children played about 13 hours of video games a week. Those showing signs of addiction could log double the hours. “That’s over three million kids who are taking damage to multiple areas of their lives and probably need some type of help,” Gentile said in a statement. The addicted gamers are far more likely to be boys. They report having trouble paying at-

tention in school, receive poorer grades and have more health problems. Pathological gamers usually had a video-

urvivors of the Columbine High School massacre led solemn remembrances here on Monday on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy that left 13 people dead and 23 others injured. Under brilliant blue skies, around 1,200 people gathered in this Denver suburb to reflect on the horrific events of April 20, 1999, when teenagers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a bloody rampage through their high school. Thirteen white doves – one for each of the victims – were released following a sombre outdoor ceremony at a

park just a short distance from the scene of one of the most traumatic school shootings in US history. Columbine’s principal Frank DeAngelis, who has vowed to remain in the job until every student who was in kindergarten in 1999 has graduated, said students during the attack had been robbed of their childhood. Val Schnurr, who was shot in the attack, said while the events of 1999 remained vivid, she refused consider herself a victim. “As a survivor, there are days it feels like it happened yesterday,” Schnurr told the crowd. “I was blessed with a second chance at life. We are not victims we are survivors.”

The country’s top court rejected an appeal by Masumi Hayashi, a 47-year-old mother of four, against the sentence that was handed down by a district court in 2002 and upheld by a higher court in 2005.

The bizarre case gripped Japan and led to a rash of copycat poisonings. Hayashi was convicted for mixing arsenic into curry served at a community festival in 1998, killing two children and two adults in Wakayama prefecture, 450 kilometres southwest of Tokyo. Then escape to nearby Phetchaburi province on Saturday when the seaside resort of Cha-am is hosting the “Chom Wang Fang Phleng Banleng Tai Saengchan” music festival. The festival is the first in a series of efforts by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote the

country’s attractions by blending popular songs with an appreciation of historic sites. “Most people tend to travel straight to Hua Hin without stopping in Phetchaburi, even though we have many historic spots of cultural worth,” says its governor, Chai Panichpornpan. “This project will help to introduce our province to the world.” As well as the concert, festival-goers will enjoy exhibi-

tions, a parade of classic cars and Thai food cooked and presented in palace style.

Three historic palaces The exhibitions take in three historic palaces: Phra Nakhon Khiri, also known as Khao Wang, Phra Ram Rachaniwet or Ban Puen Palace, and Maruk Khatayawan. Khao Wang was King Rama IV’s holiday residence and was built in 1859 in neo-classical style on the top of Samana Mountain. The Europeanstyle Ban Puen Palace, King Rama V’s rainy-season palace, was built in 1916, while Maruk

Khatayawan is a beautiful teak seaside palace built by King Rama VI. “Phetchaburi has many historic places and temples dating back to the Thawarawadi era as well as Kaeng Krachan National Park,” says the governor. The concert will feature Groove Riders singer Burin Boonwisut, Saksit “Tor” Vejsupaporn, Ben Chalathit, Koh Mr Saxman, Bee Peerapat, Flure singer Suwira “Q” Boonrod, Jennifer Kim, Pawarisa “Waen” Penchart, Nui Wiriyapa and Charin Nanthanakorn.

The CD features songs from a range of popular Korean TV series, among them “Never Say Goodbye” from “My Girl”, “The Melody” from “Coffee Prince” and “I Believe” from “My Sassy Girl”. The album sounds more international than Korean and matches an upgraded dancing style designed by choreographer Nick Bass, the man behind Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. The Korean boy band worked on the album with renowned songwriters Kenzie, Yoo Young Jin and Fany from Fly to the Skypin on “Let’s Not”, and with U Know and Micky from Dong Bang Shin Gi on “Heartquake”. THE SPORT Blatter’s driving licence suspended

Sepp Blatter

Fifa president Sepp Blatter’s driving licence was suspended for a month after an accident last October while he was overtaking in his sportscar, the Swiss news agency ATS reported. The 73-year-old head of world football’s governing body collided with another vehicle heading in the opposite direction. Blatter was not hurt in the accident in the Bernese Oberland, but the driver of the oncoming car was slightly injured.– AFP

Santa Cruz set to leave Blackburn Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz has told Blackburn Rovers that he will leave the club at the end of the season. The 27-yearold, who is recovering after knee surgery last week, made the revelation on a Paraguayan radio station. “I have already told them [Blackburn] and they know that before the transfer window closes I would like to continue my career at a bigger, more ambitious team,” he told Radio Nanduti. “Even though I haven’t heard anything, I haven’t changed my mind.” – AFP

Hayden and Murali sparkle for Chennai Cricket “golden oldies” Matthew

Hayden and Muttiah Muralitharan powered Chennai Super Kings to a 92-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers on Monday in the Indian Premier League. Autralian Hayden struck a sizzling 65 at Saint George’s Park before being run out by Rahul Dravid. The departure of Hayden just one ball after fellow Matthew Hayden opener Parthiv Patel was out for 30 did slow a Chennai charge that saw them dash to 106-0 after 10 overs, but they finished on 179-5 to set Royals a challenging target. Enter Sri Lanka wizard Muralitharan to cause havoc and snap up three wickets, including the prized one of former England captain Kevin Pietersen for a duck, and all the damage was inflicted at the expense of just 11 runs.

CONQUERING THE DEMONS Seles chronicles weight struggles in new book AP, New York

M

onica Seles has written the kind of book she thinks she’d needed to read in her darkest days, a lesson in conquering the demons of food without that dreaded word diet. Seles figures she bought every self-help book on the market. She felt sure that if she just found the right diet, if she just hired the right trainer, she’d lose weight and reclaim her tennis career. Instead Seles would gain it back as quickly as she dropped it, sneaking off on late-night supermarket runs and bingeing on junk food in secret. Seeking refuge from the pain and confusion of dual tragedies, she put on more than 16 kilograms. “When I started on this journey, I had all the diet books, I knew what to do, I worked with the famous trainers,” Seles said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday. “But yet I couldn’t get it.” Now the 35-year-old Seles has written a book of her own: “Getting a Grip on My Body, My Mind, My Self” will be released today. It’s technically a memoir, chronicling her rise from a tennis-loving kid in the former Yugoslavia to the No 1 player in the world. Seles tried so many diets. “I could recite them for you sitting here,” she said. “But until I realised that I held that power – not my trainer, not my coach, not my family, but me – that’s when I think I started to shift in the way I thought.” In April 1993, Seles was 19 years old and had already won nine Grand Slam titles. Her whole world made sense: hard

That life shattered in a second during a match in Hamburg, Germany, when Seles was stabbed by a spectator. Weeks later, her father was diagnosed with cancer. He died in 1998 after a long battle with the disease. Seles returned to tennis and won one more Grand Slam, the 1996 Australian Open. But her mind and body weren’t the same. It took her more than nine years, her weight and emotions constantly yo-yoing, before she fully grasped the connection between the two. “I hired some fantastic trainers, some fantastic nutritionists,” Seles said. “But unfortunately no one paid attention to where these emotions were coming from.” She weighed more than 77 kilograms at the peak. Seles’ fitness level was a frequent topic of conversation at her tournament news conferences during those years. Still, the depth of

her struggles wasn’t something Seles was going to talk about publicly. “I felt weird that I couldn’t control a simple thing like eating,” she said. “I was so in control when you’d watch me on the tennis court, but yet what I put in my mouth I had zero control [over]. I was kind of embarrassed by it, because everybody viewed me as a super strong mentally athlete.” Her 30th birthday approaching, unable to work out because of her foot, Seles panicked that she would gain even more weight. Instead, without any trainers or nutritionists to tell her what to do, she started to relax about food. No more calorie-counting. No more bingeing out of guilt after eating something deemed off-limits. After all those years of wanting more than anything to lose the extra weight, Seles accomplished it only after she stopped really trying. She’s learned to savour food and listen to her appetite, to eat because she’s hungry – not just because something is in front of her.

‘Mind games are like ads’: Wenger

‘SHOW SOME BALLS’ Fayed calls for Premier League wage cap to level the playing field AFP, London

lamboyant Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has urged other clubs in the English Premier League to show the “balls” needed to join his call for a wage cap and so create a more even distribution of wealth in the top flight. Fulham are currently eighth in the table under the guidance of Roy Hodgson, their manager, and in line for a place in next season’s Europa League. That is no mean achievement for a team without any bigname players and a home ground of Craven Cottage in west London whose capacity is restricted to 25,000. Some reports have suggested that Egyptian-born businessman Fayed, who also owns London’s Harrods department store, may be thinking of ending his involvement with Fulham. However, he told the club’s official website: “I own the best club in the world, with the best team and the best fans. “I want to reassure people of this, because sometimes there are naughty rumours that I may sell the club.” Fayed, whose son Dodi also died in the Paris car crash which killed Britain’s princess Diana in 1997, added: “I am not going to give up on other things in the game either. Take my crusade against sky-high players’ wages. “Our expenses bill rose by 17 per cent last year. How can it be

These wages need to be capped. “But I worry that it won’t happen because the Premier League and the FA [Football Association] are run by donkeys who don’t understand business, who are dazzled by money. “If the world wants to keep players in pocket for tens of thousands of pounds every week, then let the Premier League and the FA negotiate with Sky and other broadcasters for a share of the billions that they make in profit from our product, from my product. “Because, at present, they don’t. All around the world, football fans are paying to

watch top matches on TV. “And yet do most clubs see any of that money? No. We are hopelessly dependent on our end-of-season league placing to determine our share of the cash.It makes a difference of feast or famine every season. “I want to help other clubs,” Al Fayed insisted. “I speak my mind and other chairmen should too. They need to wake up from their coma and join me in this fight with the Premier League and the FA. “In fact, they can come and have lunch with me at Harrods, where I can serve them stags’ testicles from my Scottish estate, Balnagown. We all need big balls in this business.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger likened “mind games” between rival Premier League managers to advertising as he did his best to stay out of the row between Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafael Benitez. Manchester United boss Ferguson accused Liverpool counterpart Benitez of “arrogance” and showing “contempt” following the Spaniard’s reaction to seeing his side go 2-0 up against Blackburn Rovers at Anfield. Benitez has fired off several verbal volleys at Ferguson this season. Wenger, who has had his fair share of run-ins with Ferguson and former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho during his time in England, said: “You want respect in the game, and we managers are responsible for it. “I do not want to interfere in that more because I do not know what happened [between Ferguson and Benitez],” the Frenchman added. “I believe it [mind games] was always something which was overrated a bit. “But it is part of our environment and part of the media. “You never know how much impact it has because it is impossible to measure. “It is a little bit like advertising – it is needed but what impact it has on sales you never know. With mind games it’s the same.”– A F P

Dimitar Berbatov after failing to score in the FA Cup shoot-out.

lex Ferguson has leapt to the defence of striker Dimitar Berbatov as Manchester United look to put their season back on track following their unexpected FA Cup exit. Berbatov has struggled to justify the £30 million transfer fee United paid Tottenham for the Bulgaria international’s services in September. He has scored just eight times

in 27 league appearances while his miss, after coming on as a substitute, in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final penalty shootout defeat by Everton proved critical as United’s quintuple dream bit the dust. Ferguson’s Premier League champions get a quick chance to return to winning ways when they entertain Portsmouth at Old Trafford on Wednesday. In the build-up to that match, the United manager has defend-

ed Berbatov from accusations he is not living up to his exorbitant transfer fee. “I don’t see any evidence of that,” said Ferguson. “He has had his injuries but I thought he did well when he came on in the semi-final. “He was disappointed to miss his penalty and he’ll get criticism for that. “When you pay £30 million for a player everyone thinks he should be able to score a penal-

ty kick. But anyone can lose on penalty kicks. “Berbatov was upset but then it was a disappointed dressing room, you’ll always get that after a semi-final [defeat]. “And it was our first semi-final we’ve lost, don’t forget that. We’ve got to move on. “We’ve done it in the past and we’ll do it again,” said the veteran United manager, who fielded a largely second-string side against Everton.

ay Allen shot himself out of a shooting slump by hitting the Bulls right between the eyes when it mattered the most. Allen fired in the tie-breaking three-pointer with two seconds left, giving the Boston Celtics a dramatic 118-115 victory over the pesky Chicago Bulls yesterday, and squaring their Eastern Conference first-round play-off series at one-game apiece. Chicago’s Ben Gordon poured in a play-off career-high 42 points, including a jumper with 12.3 seconds remaining to knot the game at 115-apiece until Allen’s heroics stopped the Bulls in their tracks. “We left everything out on the court,” Gordon said. “We

would have loved to win this game and go back to Chicago up 2-0. But Ray hit a big shot and that’s how it went.” Following a timeout, Rajon Rondo took the inbound pass, and dribbled the left side while waiting for Allen to get free. Rondo hit Allen at the right of the three-point arc, and the NBA’s second best all-time three-point shooter buried the rhythm jumper – his sixth three of the game – over the outstretched arms of Joakim Noah, sending the sellout crowd at TD BankNorth Garden into a frenzy. “We all talk about it in the playground, and there’s nobody there,” said Allen, who exploded for 28 of his 30 points in the

second half. “You get the ball and you count down, five, four, three, two one. The ball goes in the hole, you make the crowd scream, and put your hands in the air. For that moment, that’s what it was like for me.” Without any time-outs left, Chicago’s Tyrus Thomas threw up a desperation 50-footer, that fell well short at the buzzer. Allen ended a nightmarish shooting slump in which the All-Star guard scored just four points on 1-of-12 shooting in Saturday’s 105-103 overtime loss. His shooting woes continued in the first half with four more points before finding the bulls-eye in the final 24 minutes.

“I needed one volunteer to step up and score for us and it was Ray Allen,” Rivers said. “I’m really happy for him. What a great shot by Ray. That was terrific.” Elsewhere it was San Antonio Spurs 105, Dallas Mavericks 84. “French Flash” Tony Parker drove through the Mavericks’ porous defence for 38 points and the host Spurs spanked their Texas rivals in Game Two to even their Western Conference first-round series. “It was a must game for us and I wanted to be aggressive,” said Parker, who hit 16-of-22 field goals. “We came out with a lot of energy, and our defence was great tonight,” he said.

FABIORE- JUVENATED? Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro is considering a return to Juventus after three seasons in the Spanish Liga.

Phil Mickelson may have failed to win his third Masters at Augusta National last week but he did wonders for his confidence in bettering Tiger Woods and hugely boosted his image with the American public. The final round dream pairing lived up to all the hype as the two best golfers in the world brilliantly hacked away at a seven-shot deficit before falling at the last hurdle and there was no doubt it was the 38-year-old lefthander who was the inspiration. His straight-out-of-the-blocks front nine of 30 equalled the Masters record and it was on his coattails that Woods rode as he bounced himself back into contention with a superb eagle at the eighth. Mickelson by general consensus also won hands down over Woods in the popularity stakes. The majority of the cheers emanating from the thousands of fans who massed around this moving feast of golf were for the San Diego man and in defeat he was by far the more gracious. “I enjoyed the opportunity to play with Tiger, I enjoyed the chance to try to win a golf tournament, and I love the fact that I shot 30 to give myself an opportunity to win,” said Mickelson. “It was a very emotional day because it’s up and down, up and down, a lot of highs and lows. The crowd, it made the highs even higher, and the moans made the lows even lower, and it was just an emotional day.” Woods on the other hand was dismissive of what had been an electrically-charged afternoon that put the excitement back into the Masters after three relatively drab years. “I fought my swing all day and just kind of Band-Aided around and almost won the tournament with a Band-Aid swing today,” he said. “It was just terrible.” What was going on was that Mickelson won their head-to-head by a stroke 67 to 68 and in the process grabbed an early psychological ascendancy into what is building up to be an exceptional year. It was he who looked to be more in control of his swing with Woods errant off the tee, struggling grimly with his putting and generally exuding an air of frustration.
