’m staring at a computer screen as usual when my favourite song starts playing in my earphones, making me question myself. Why am I here? I could be listening to the sea and wind whisper under the stars on some beach, but instead I’m busy doing what my mind says is right. If I could lie back and gaze at the starlight, it would bring a deeper message. How long will I ignore my heart? But there’s no need to answer all this. I just thank my heart for asking, and move on.

THE CITY Red-shirt traffic alert With as many as 100,000 antigovernment red-shirt protesters expected to rally to Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda’s Sisao Thewes residence today, police have decided to close three main roads. Motorists should avoid Phitsanulok Road from Nang Loeng intersection to Thewes, Rajdamnoen Nok Avenue from the Royal Plaza to U Thong Nai Road, and Sri Ayutthaya Road from Wat Benchamabophit (the Marble Temple) to Si Sao Thewes intersection. Roads could also be shut on Thursday and Friday – police have urged the public to listen out for announcements.
Road protests In related news, three separate groups blocked roads as part of protests yesterday, causing heavy traffic jams. In the afternoon, a group of Michelin employees in 40 pickup trucks gathered on the inbound Phaholyothin and outbound Rajvithi roads, causing heavy traffic jams around the Victory Monument and Bot Mae Phra intersection areas. The group was requesting talks with the labour minister. Meanwhile Rama 4 Road was congested by a merit making ceremony held by Klong Toei Market vendors in the morning and a funeral for two security guards in the afternoon. ewin Chidchob, who once led the red-shirts in support of Thaksin Shinawatra, yesterday went all out to stop what is touted to become the biggest red-shirt rally ever. Since Newin’s switch of allegiance paved the way for Abhisit Vejjajiva to take over as premier, the once-close ties between Newin and Thaksin have been completely severed. Now, with Newin bent on thwarting the pro-Thaksin rally, Thaksin’s aides have rushed to attack their former ally.
Loyalty to His Majesty “What we saw at the press conference was acting,” fumed Pheu Thai MP Surapong Towichakchaikul, after watching Newin urge Thaksin to prove his loyalty to His Majesty the King by putting a brake on the red-shirts’ campaign. Thaksin’s personal spokesman Pongthep Thepkanjana said he could guarantee that Thaksin was just as loyal to His Majesty as Newin. “I cannot understand what agenda Newin is harbouring,” Pongthep said. Banned Thai Rak Thai executive Chamlong Krutkhuntod believes Newin’s latest move was intended to prevent more people from joining the ongoing red-shirts’ protests.

Girl jumps from third floor in fear of teacher A secondary school student was seriously injured after she jumped from her school’s third floor in fear of her teacher. The girl rushed out of class and jumped into the playground, scared of how her teacher would react to her failure to do her homework. The girl, whose age was not given, was taken to hospital in Kafr el-Sheik province, north of Cairo. In October, an 11-year-old student in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria died after his teacher kicked him in the stomach for not doing his homework. The teacher was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for six years. Last month, an Egyptian high school teacher was detained after he allegedly threw boiling water at a student’s face, angered that the student interrupted him during a break at the teachers’ room. AFP

he Arctic ice cap is thinner than ever, satellite observations have revealed, while also indicating that the sea ice cover continues to shrink due to global warming. This winter saw the fifthlowest maximum ice extent on record since monitoring by satellite began in 1979, said the Colorado-based National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC). The period between 2004 and 2009 saw the lowest ice extent, said Charles Fowler, a University of Colorado (CU) glaciologist who led a team of scientists for the research.
The researchers found that the maximum sea ice extent for 2008 and 2009, reached on February 28, was 15.2 million square kilometres, 720,000 square kilometres less than the average extent between 1979 and 2000.
Vulnerable ice “Ice extent is an important measure of the health of the Arctic, but it only gives us a two-dimensional view of the ice cover,” said Walter Meier, research scientist at the NSIDC and CU. “Thickness is important, especially in the winter, because
it is the best overall indicator of the health of the ice cover. As the ice cover in the Arctic grows thinner, it grows more vulnerable to melting in the summer.” Until recently, most Arctic sea ice survived at least one summer and often several. But the situation has changed dramatically, according to the scientists. Thin seasonal ice, which melts and refreezes every year, now makes up about 70 per cent of Arctic sea ice in wintertime, up from 40-50 per cent in the 1980s and 1990s. Thicker ice (2.74 metres) that survives at least two summer seasons now only accounts for 10 per cent of wintertime ice cover, down from 30 to 40 per cent.
An Australian woman with a drug habit stole more than 1,000 bags from the luggage carousels at Perth airport. Asvina Dhatt, 29, got off with a fine of A$950 (Bt23,500) and a suspended prison sentence of eight months. Back to caning Malaysia is to revive caning in schools to curb discipline problems among pupils, three years after making moves to ban corporal punishment. The government will issue specific guidelines on how to implement the punishment, Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong said. “We will allow the headmaster or anyone who has been authorised to execute the punishment, while parents will be notified and invited to witness the caning to be done in a confined area,” he said. “We need to take precautions because students nowadays are too creative in breaching the rules,” Wee said. – AFP
Fawcett’s cancer spreads to liver Farrah Fawcett is being treated for anal cancer that has spread to her liver, a producer who worked with the actress said in detailing a more serious situation than has previously been described. Fawcett’s producer and her doctor said that Fawcett is in a Los Angeles hospital, recovering from complications from a medical procedure in Germany, and is “not at death’s door”, as the producer put it. “She had a minor procedure. That procedure led to a small amount of bleeding into a muscle in her abdominal wall,” which created a sac of blood that caused pressure and pain, said her cancer specialist, Dr Lawrence Piro. “She’s on the mend and will be going home very shortly,” said her producer, Craig Nevius. “She’s doing fantastic. Her fight goes on ... She’s not going anywhere anytime soon.” However, confirmation that the cancer had spread was dire news. Piro said in a statement that Fawcett was using a wheelchair because it was painful for her to walk. – A P
iPod repairman guilty of fraud A Michigan man has pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering in a scheme to acquire more than 9,000 replacement iPod Shuffle music players. Nicholas Woodhams appeared in court on Monday, less than a month after charges were filed. Woodhams had an iPod repair shop and knew that owners could get a replacement if their Shuffle had problems. He guessed valid serial numbers and entered them into Apple Inc’s website. Woodhams then resold the Shuffles shipped by Apple. He has agreed to give up property, including a house, an Audi sedan, a race car and more than US$570,000 (Bt20.1 million). Woodhams will be sentenced on August 25. – A P

Vietnamese immigrant, who gunned down 13 people in New York state before killing himself, sent a letter to a television station before his rampage, blaming police and bemoaning his “poor life”. “I am Jiverly Wong shooting the people. First I want to say sorry; I know a little English. I hope you understand all of this. Of course you need to know why I shooting? Because undercover cop gave me a lot of ass during eighteen years,” reads in part the letter received by News 10 Now in Syracuse, New York. Voong shot two receptionists, killing one, then strode into a classroom where an English lesson was being held and shot dead another 12 people before turning the gun on himself.
The case was adjourned until a hearing on April 29. Rihanna’s lawyer Donald Etra said after the hearing that the singer wanted the case to be concluded swiftly.
Asked if Rihanna wanted a plea deal, he added: “It’s not up to her to decide what kind of deal she wants. It’s up to the DA [district attorney].” Brown issued an apology following the alleged attack, saying he was “sorry and saddened” by the events and that he was seeking the counselling of his pastor, family and friends. Affidavits filed in the case have said Brown allegedly slammed Rihanna’s head against the window of a car the couple were travelling in before repeatedly punching and biting her.

ast year, when it came to music awards, the name on everyone’s lips was Bodyslam. This year, the band sweeping up the prizes is Moderndog. The indie outfit, who’s been around since the mid-1990s and is considered the pioneer of Thai alternative rock, has won this year’s nods for Best Duo or Group and taken home the prized statuettes for “Ngern Larn”, a song off their latest album “Ting Nong
Noy”, at both the 21st Season Awards and the sixth Kom Chad Luek Awards. So the pundits are expecting that they’ll pick up these same two categories at the fourth Seed Awards tomorrow night. Strangely though, Moderndog doesn’t have the most nominations this time round. That honour is shared by Tattoo Color, Apartment Khunpa, Silly Fools, Big Ass and Sweetnuch, who all have five. With the exception of Tattoo Color, they’re all com-
peting for Song of the Year, with Silly Fools and Big Ass facing off for Rock Band of the Year and Rock Album of the Year prizes.

op sensation Sirintip “Rose” Harnpradit has come up with a nice change for her third album “Rose Show”, moving from her trademark melancholy into a dance groove. “I wanted more songs that people can dance to,” she says. “Everyone thinks of sad songs when they think of me. I am the sensitive type and easily moved to tears, but most of the time you’ll find me smiling radiantly. “And the new album is the same format, anyway – a mix of pop and easy-listening music, with piano and strings.” The 12 tracks were produced by Krich Kritsanawarin, who’s had a hand in successful releases by many artists, including Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre, Peacemaker and Beam Jaruwan. The disc is more colourful than Rose’s previous output, with a saxophone showing up on “Khon Plaek

Euea Sunthornsanan, the founder of Thailand’s famous band Sunthraporn, was the 19th Thai national nominated for the Unesco list of Great Personalities of the World to mark the centenary of his birth in 2010. The Culture Ministry plans to build a statue in his home town of Samut Songkhram, and his music company honours him with this set of seven CDs featuring 100 timeless songs along with a booklet covering his life, his works and photos. All the songs were composed by Khru Euea, who performs both solo and in duets with the band’s female singers. The set, which also features some instrumentals, is priced at Bt1,900 and some of the proceeds will be used by the Sunthraporn Foundation to organise an anniversary event.

fter disappearing from the competition scene for almost four years, DJ Benze has been declared Champion of the Year at the Pioneer Pro DJ Digital Battle Mixing 2009. “I won because of all my experience,” says the 25-year-old club DJ, who spins at Zoo, Idol, 400 Club, and Route 66. DJ Benze, whose real name is Pakasit Puangngern, receives two Pioneer CDJ-1000MK3 and one DJM-700 Mixer with latest HDJ2000 headphones worth Bt150,000 after competing against other finalists recently at Narz – Narcissus Bangkok. Most importantly, he’ll represent Thailand at the upcoming Asian battle, where he’ll be up against the DJ champions of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. “We are certain that the DJ Battle will improve the standard of Thai DJs, and at the same time reinforce Pioneer’s position as a leading producer of Pro DJ prod-
ucts,” says Lertpun Mounglek, car audio marketing and CDJ product sales section manager of Pioneer Electronics (Thailand). Pakasit decided to be a DJ almost 10 years ago after spending time in Phuket. He started practising with Pioneer equipment and took part in the “Pioneer CDJ100” project in Siam Square. He’s been taking part in the Pioneer contests since 2001, coming in ninth in the CDJ 2004 competition and winning the Countdown DJ Battle in 2005. He defines himself as a techno minimal DJ but says he listens to a variety of music from house, hiphop, chill out and techno to drum & bass. His favourite DJs are Steve Angello, Deadmau5, and Kenichi, as well as DJ Boy SAB who gave him advice on effect and synth. “I think it’s really important to listen to a lot of music as well as to a variety of genres,” he says. “Music is an art and mixing is like painting. The DJ competition isn’t only concerned about skills but also about how beautifully you paint in several tones.”

Last weekend’s sold-out music festival, “Yesterday Love Song”, held on the beach of Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya, was packed to the gills, as the 3,000-strong audience travelled back in time to their teenage days, clapping their hands and singing along with the golden oldies.

The show kicked off at 7 with new generation artists Ben Chalathit, In Budokan and Pew Chotiros singing covers of favourite love songs. Veteran crooner O Isoon, who just released a new album “O+I0” after a 10-year hiatus, took the audience back to 1980s with his hits “Chan Ja Bin” and “Sai Yai”, before segueing into new track “Khor Klub Ma.” Then it was the turn of the oldtimers to take the stage, with Koong Tuangsit performing “Thang Rak Thang Klied” and Saichol Radomkij singing “Phieng Krasib”. They were followed by Od Brandy, Sam Sixth Sense, Chompoo Fruity and Byrd & Heart. Mum Laconics walked down from the stage to joke with the audience in “Chan Rak Phua Khao” while Tata Young drew her fans closer to her during her magnetic performance. Woods a late arrival for practice
TEENAGERS ON PARADE
The fans lined up behind the wooden gates along the first fairway, waiting for 8am so they could go onto the course for the first practice round of the Masters. That’s usually the best time to see Tiger Woods. But the four-time Masters champion took a detour from his infamous “Dawn Patrol”. Woods didn’t show up until about 4pm, when he putted and worked in the short-game area. He finally teed off at No 10, but after finishing the 14th hole, made a detour to the 18th and called it a day.

anny Lee figured he would see Tiger Woods at some point during the Masters. Even so, it was no less surprising to look up from the putting green at golf’s biggest star hitting a 3wood off the 10th tee. “I thought he would be big and ripped like I’ve seen him on TV,” Lee said. “But he looked tall and skinny from where I was standing.” No telling what Woods might have thought had he looked over his shoulder. Lee is 18 and doesn’t appear to be a day older. The New Zealand-based amateur hardly appears to be a threat to the world’s No 1 player, but his results suggest otherwise. He already has replaced Woods in the record books as the youngest US Amateur champion, and he made more history in February when he won the Johnnie Walker Classic to become the youngest winner in European Tour history. But at this Masters for the ages, Lee isn’t even the youngest player at Augusta National. That honour goes to 17-yearold Ryo Ishikawa, who already has rock star status in Japan. Ishikawa won his first Japan Golf Tour event when he was 15, won as a pro last year and is taking time away from high school to play in the Masters. Filling out this crowd of teenagers is Rory McIlroy, who beat a strong field in Dubai this year and already is No 17 in the
world. “I don’t feel like a 19year-old,” McIlroy said. “Obviously I am, but I feel like I’ve matured very quickly since coming on tour, and I’m sure Danny and Ryo will tell you the same thing. But it’s obviously a great position to be in.” Twelve years ago, Woods became the youngest Masters champion ever at age 21. Now, he is older than 41 players at the Masters. “It’s a different time,” Woods said recently. “Guys are developing at an earlier age and a faster rate.” It is rare for the Masters to have three teenagers in the field, but the youth movement goes beyond them. Bad hair day Rory McIlroy already is known as the teenager from Northern Ireland with the mop of brown hair. That might change. “It’s starting to annoy me a little bit. It’s getting a little much. I might get it cut whenever I come back from this little stint after Hilton Head ... I’ll just get it trimmed and see how it goes.” Someone asked if he would get it cut before winning a major. “Depends how fast I win a Major,” he replied.
Advice for a champ Trevor Immelman has not won a tournament since he slipped on the green jacket last year. His mentor, Gary Player, offered him a sage piece of advice. “ I said to him today, ‘And when you win a second time, or you win another major, it will change again. It’s a process of change.’”

ifty-two years ago, Gary Player arrived at the Masters with less than $5,000 to his name but an unwavering confidence that he could beat anyone. Arnold Palmer? Jack Nicklaus? Bring ’em on. For one decade after another, Player teed it up with the greats of the game at Augusta National, watching the rise of Tiger Woods and hanging around long enough to see yet
another wave of promising young golfers arrive on the scene, mere teens born long after the South African won the last of his three green jackets. But no one lasts forever, not even a fitness buff such as Player. Instead of dropping to his knees to rip off some pushups, the Man in Black announced on Monday this will be his final Masters. “I’m exercising profusely, but it’s very difficult at 73 to build
strength,” Player said. “The golf course is so long. It is just so long. I mean, I’m hitting a wood to almost every single hole.” Even when his chances of winning had long since passed, Player revelled in more modest accomplishments such as making the cut, or outlasting contemporaries such as Palmer and Nicklaus. He hasn’t made the cut since 1998, when at age 62 he became the oldest player to reach the weekend at
Augusta (a record eclipse by 63-year-old Tommy Aaron). “I’ve managed to break 80 the last two years,” Player said. “It’s getting to a stage now where I don’t know whether I can do that out here. It’s so long and I’m getting weaker.” He did play long enough to set the mark for most Masters appearances, snapping a tie with Palmer by playing in his 51st last year. No 52 will be his last.

Arguably the greatest to ever play the game, Jordan was elected yesterday to the class of 2009. “Growing up, I would never have envisioned myself at any point in time, being in any Hall of Fame,” Jordan said. “All I wanted was a chance to go to college and whatever happened after that happened.” However, with his impeccable credentials, it was a no-brainer that the former University of North Carolina star would make the cut the first year he was eligible. “It’s an honour to be here and to be a part if it,” he said. “My career speaks for itself, you guys recognise that, and all the fans and my competitors I played against. It’s truly a joy to play basketball.” “Air Jordan” was joined by NBA greats David Robinson, John Stockton, Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s coach Vivian Stringer. The class will be inducted on the weekend of September 10-12 into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. With his dazzling dunks and last-second game-winning shots, Jordan was the most recognisable figure in the sporting world during his playing days. The five-time league MVP led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in the dominating decade of the 1990s, during a storied 15-year career, twice interrupted by retirements before finishing with the Washington Wizards in 2003. On the court, Jordan was a fierce competitor. His 32,292 points is third best in league history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. And his 30.12-point career scoring average is the best of all-time. Off the court, Jordan was perhaps bigger as the face of successful Nike ads that helped popularise basketball globally. Robinson, nicknamed the Admiral after starring for Navy, made an immediate impact on the league, while carrying the San Antonio Spurs to a pair of NBA Championships during his 14-year career.
