Protecting crops Salakphra Wildlife Sanctuary chief Metha Santikul told the meeting that three things had driven the elephants to look for food outside the sanctuary: disturbance of their habitat; increasing scarcity of food and water sources; and the encroachment of farmers’ fields. Metha said that among the six measures that had been implemented were patrols and wire fences to block the elephants’ routes out of the forest. A four-kilometre-long ditch has also been dug to protect farmlands, while the “Bring the Elephant Home Foundation” has helped in planting 10,000 trees as a source of food for the creatures. Three kilometres of electric fence provide another line of defence, he added. DAILY

Deputy provincial governor Chaiwat Limpwantha said the 536,594-rai sanctuary covers areas of Muang, Bo Ploi, and Si Sawat districts where 38 villages on the perimeter of the sanctuary are being affected by the elephants. The fields of corn, tapioca and sugarcane attract the beasts and provide them with an easy meal.

ATM con A similar phone fraud occurred last month – members of a Thai-Taiwanese gang claiming to be from the Revenue Department rang wealthy individuals about a tax refund available through an ATM. But after the transaction ended, the victims found that their bank accounts had been drained.

Police arrested the gang a few days ago. More than a thousand people have called the court in the last month to ask the same question as Nam. “Over the past two weeks we have been getting about 100 calls a day,” says a court official. Even one of the official’s colleagues has been targeted by the scam. “After hearing she worked for the court, the caller rushed to hang up.” She adds that all Courts of Justice inform defendants via paper writs and never phone them at all. The Office of the Judiciary issued a warning about the fraud calls on March 20.

omputer security top guns around the world watched warily as the dreaded Conficker worm squirmed deeper into infected machines with the arrival of an April 1 trigger date. The malicious software evolved, as expected, from East to West, beginning in time zones first to greet April Fool’s Day. “The big mystery is what those behind Conficker are going to do. When they have this many machines under their control it is kind of scary.

With a click of a mouse they could get thousands of machines to do whatever they want,” said analyst Paul Ferguson of Trend Micro computer security firm.

Microsoft offers bounty A task force assembled by Microsoft has been working to stamp out the worm, referred to as Conficker or DownAdUP, and the US software colossus has placed a bounty of US$250,000 (Bt8.9 million) on the heads of those responsible for the threat. The worm was programmed

to modify itself yesterday to become harder to stop and began doing that when infected machines got cues, some from websites with Greenwich Mean Time and others based on local clocks. Conficker task force members tracking Internet traffic in Asia and Europe after clocks struck April 1 there said there was no sign that the worm was doing anything other than modifying itself to be harder to exterminate. Conficker had been programmed to reach out to 250 websites daily to download commands from its masters, they said, but yesterday it began generating daily lists of 50,000 websites and reaching randomly to 500 of those.

ackie Chan shrugs off his martial-arts mantle and dons a darker, more dramatic cloak for his latest film, “Shinjuku Incident”, directed by Derek Yee, the man behind the 2004 thriller “One Night in Mongkok”. Chan plays Steelhead, a Chinese tractor mechanic who goes to Japan in search of his missing girlfriend, and then settles there illegally after he finds she’s married to up-and-coming yakuza chief Eguchi (played by Masaya Kato). He meets Jie (Daniel Wu) in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, but later agrees to work for Eguchi as a killer in return for citizenship papers.

In their heyday the two balladeers, who are now in their mid-50s, were the princes of sad love songs. On Sunday they moved nimbly around the stage, mimicking the dance routines of the younger vocalists whose songs they borrowed for the show, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. Charas crooned his greatest hits, among them “Proh Chanan”, “Phisua” and “Thang Roo Kor Rak”, while Pan entertained with two sets

of medleys, as well as the hits “Rak Nirun”, “Sop Ta”, “Fao Koy” and “Rak Lon Jai”. Guests Maleewan Jimena wowed the audience with her powerful high pitch but wasn’t so effective in her duet with Pan on “Mai Roo Jak Chan Mai Roo Jak Ther”. Viyada

Folds of dreams A young origami artist explains why paper folding is his passion By Penlak Pakdeejaroen SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

XTRA >> The Thai Origami Club website is at www. ThaiOrigami-Club.Net46 .net. >> Origami master Akira Yoshizawa created more than 50,000 models and published in 18 books before his death in 2005.

is interests vary from dharma to astrology, but young accountant Ekkasit Khem-nguad’s real passion is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding known as origami. A keen student, the youngster was just five years old when he started learning how to form shapes from paper guided by his mother. “I grew up with Japanese culture because my mother worked at the Japan cultural office,” he says. He continued his hobby by studying magazines, most of them in Japanese but with diagrams that he could follow. He recalls spending seven hours painstakingly finishing an origami of a monster, one of his favourite models. “The diagram had so many dots and arrows to follow. It was published as part of a

push to popularise the craft and make origami a living artform outside Japan. That idea came from the master of origami, Akira Yoshizawa, who is also my favourite artist,” he says. “Origami is a fun leisure activity. I enjoy the feeling that I can create anything I like from a piece of paper.” Today Ekkasit comes up with his own characters. “Some people say we cannot fold human characters convincingly but I disagree,” he says, showing off an origami of a female violinist figure inspired by local classical outfit Vie Trio. He’s also created a royal barge and a paper statue of the Hindu deity Ganesha. “He’s the god of creativity

with an elephant head. Thai people relate to him,” he smiles. He started off by sketching the deity and then decided to make his Ganesha in three

versions: in a sitting pose with two and four hands, and in a standing pose with four hands. However, the model has yet to be completed to his

satisfaction and he is still working on improvements. Folding paper requires precision, he stresses. “The difficulty is to read the diagram correctly. It’s like a musician reading notes,” Ekkasit says. Ekkasit has been teaching origami art since he was in high school but says it has still really to catch on with Thais. “We don’t have goodquality paper for origami,” he laments. In Thailand, a small origami art club was started three years ago by Bancha Thanaboonsombat. He wrote about it in his blog and has now attracted a community of around 30 members. The website provides basic knowledge for beginners and acts as a pool for exchange of ideas among origami lovers.

A blow that can kill Never dismiss a head injury, say the experts

T

he death of 45-year-old Natasha Richardson last week from what had been labelled a “mild brain injury” after a skiing accident has experts in trauma warning people that a blow to the head is serious stuff. An autopsy confirmed the actress, who fell on the slopes, died of an epidural haematoma, which is bleeding between the skull and the outer layer that covers the brain called the dura. But doctors not involved in her care noted reports that said she initially refused treatment. Death from such a seemingly minor accident is rare. But any blow to the head that causes an ache that gets worse requires immediate medical attention. “There is no such thing as a mild head injury. It's a misnomer,” says neuropsychiatrist Vani Rao, from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Centre. “Go to the emergency room immediately and get a complete evaluation.” Rao estimates that up to 75 per cent of head injuries are labelled mild, but in up to a quarter of those cases, there are significant problems, in-

cluding sleep and memory troubles, loss of cognitive abilities and changes in motivation and attitude. In many cases, bleeding is usually revealed by a timely CT scan, says Dr Howard Eisenberg, chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Because Richardson was conscious and talking immediately after the accident, she may not have believed the problem was serious. “The problem is, everybody bumps their head, and we don’t all need to go to the emergency room for CT scans,” Eisenberg says. "That being said, everyone should be aware if you get struck on the head and it’s a moderate blow, and there’s pain that gets worse, even a little bit, that’s a clue to stop what you’re doing and get to the hospital."

I am 40 years old and work at a computer. I’ve had chronic pain in my neck and left shoulder for a year and two or three days a week, when I turn my neck to the left or right, it’s painful and tense. The pain is relieved only when I take muscle relaxant. I also exercise by bending my neck to the left and right, upward and backward, yet the pain never goes away. How can I cure the pain permanently and which medical specialist should I see?

First of all, you must see an orthopaedic doctor to get the right diagnosis. However, your symptoms seem like general muscle pain caused by poor posture or working in the same position for too long. If the symptom doesn’t go away, it could be an indication of

cervical spondylosis or cervical disc degeneration. You should also consult a rehabilitation specialist. You should take regular breaks from the computer, gently massage the neck area and exercise by bending your neck to the right

and left until you feel the muscles tensing, and avoid turning your neck backward or downward. After work, apply heat to the painful area. And rearrange your workstation to the proper ergonomic position.

Obama refuses to back England

‘Renault more suited to Malaysia’

He may be an avid sports fan, but President Barack Obama says he’s not about to wade into European football. Obama was asked at a news conference Wednesday with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown whether he had a “good luck message” for the England team before it played Ukraine yesterday in a World Cup qualifying match. Obama recently offered his predictions in the annual US college basketball tournament, which he said caused “all kinds of controversy”. And he says although he “didn’t get a briefing” on it, he knows it would “be a mistake” to offer his views on football. – AP

Fernando Alonso says Malaysia is more suited to his Renault car as he goes in search of a third victory at his favourite Grand Prix circuit. “Sepang is totally different to Melbourne and so I expect our car to be more suited to the circuit,” said the Spaniard, who finished 2008 Alonso with a flourish by picking up wins in two of the last four races. “It’s a special track for me as I’ve won there twice and it’s probably my favourite circuit so I always enjoy racing there. – AFP

Scotland axes Rangers duo Scotland captain Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor have been dropped from the side to face Iceland in a crucial World Cup qualifier yesterday. Amid reports that the Rangers duo had stayed up drinking into the early hours at the team hotel after the squad’s return from a 3-0 defeat by Holland on Saturday, an SFA spokesman confirmed a “breach of team discipline” had taken place. – AFP

South Korea edge North 1-0 Kim Chi-woo struck three minutes from time to give South Korea a 1-0 win over arch rivals North Korea yesterday and put his team within reach of the World Cup qualification. It was South Korea’s first win over their northern rivals in the last five matches and lifted them to the top of Group B with 11 points. North Korea are one point behind in second place. – AP

evin Pietersen has said he remains fully committed to playing overseas for England despite making public his unhappiness at being separated from his wife, the singer Jessica Taylor. The South Africa born batsman was much criticised after admitting in an interview last week that he was at the end of his tether. “I’ve never said I want to miss

a tour and there’s no way I will ever miss a tour,” Pietersen told the BBC on Tuesday. “I love touring. “But there’s no way I’ll be without my wife for 11 weeks again.” The 28-year-old added: “The first half of the winter was a shambles under my leadership. We didn’t come close to winning a game in India. “The comments were born from the frustration of that,” said Pietersen, whom some have accused of being more interested in money, given that has signed a contract to play in the Indian Premier League with

the Bangalore Royal Challengers, than the welfare of the England team. “I am absolutely 100 per cent passionate about playing for England. I absolutely never take it for granted about wearing the three lions on my chest,” Pietersen insisted. “The second part of the frustration was I hadn’t seen my wife since January 21. It’s the longest period of time I’ve been away from her.” Pietersen confirmed he had asked for a 48-hour break to be with Taylor, who has been competing in the British television show “Dancing on Ice”.

Branson’s £200,000 coup

Richard Branson showed business brains in getting his Virgin logo onto Brawn Grand Prix cars.

Richard Branson has proved time and again that he is one of the world’s shrewdest businessmen, but his move to put the Virgin Group logo on the Brawn GP cars is timing at its best. Last month the maverick multi-millionaire looked like he was going to buy the Honda team. Instead, he waited until Ross Brawn paid to do that – and then put his company’s name on the car, the only logo on the rookie team’s livery. It was a major publicity coup for the British entrepreneur, who was in Melbourne to see Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello cross the line first and second respectively at the season-opening Australian GP. British newspaper reports said he paid as little as £200,000 to have the Virgin Group name seen by an estimated television audience of 170 million people, probably one of the best deals in sport.

Spanish champions Real Madrid interested in Villarreal coach Pellegrini Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini could be targeted by Spanish champions Real Madrid for next season’s campaign, the AS sports daily said. According to AS, Pellegrini is one of the coaches preferred by Jorge Valdano, the man tipped to return as Real sporting director if Florentino Perez, as expected, wins the upcoming presidential elections. The elections will likely take place on June 14, and

Perez, who has still not officially announced his candidature, is the clear favourite to win them. Perez was Real president 2000-2006, with Valdano as his sporting director. According to AS, Valdano has already agreed to Perez’ request to return to the Estadio Bernabeu with him. Real sacked German Bernd Schuster as coach last autumn, with Juande Ramos

Ancelotti. However, the Italian coach said he wants to continue at AC Milan. In addition, only one per cent of Real fans would welcome Ancelotti to Madrid, according to an online poll taken recently by AS. Pellegrini, who took only three per cent in the poll, has come into the picture because the three coaches who came top of the poll – Vicente del Bosque, Josep Guardiola and Rafa Benitez – are not avail-

able. Del Bosque is the current Spain manager and very happy in the job. Benitez has recently extended his contract at Liverpool until 2014, and it is unthinkable that Guardiola would leave league leaders Barcelona for their historic rivals. Chilean Pellegrini, 55, has won massive admiration in Spain and Europe for his achievements at low-budget Villarreal since 2004.

lan Shearer is to become Newcastle’s fourth manager this season after agreeing to take on the challenge of saving the club he used to captain from relegation. Shearer, 38, a hero to the Magpies’ fans for his exploits on the pitch, had long been tipped as a future manager of the club but he could never have envisaged taking over in such difficult circumstances. Newcastle are currently third from bottom of the Premier League, two points adrift of Blackburn, the club currently occupying the last survival spot. Shearer, who has no coaching experience, has just eight games to save the club from the financially calamitous consequences of relegation and Chelsea’s visit on Saturday means he could hardly have a tougher start to his rein. Newcastle turned to Shearer as it became clear that, under the temporary management of caretaker boss Chris Hughton, the club was drifting towards disaster after a run which has seen them win only one of their last 12 league matches. Hughton had taken charge of the first-team in February after Joe Kinnear, who was only appointed as an interim boss following the departure of Kevin Keegan in September, underwent a heart bypass. Kinnear has been unable to return to work and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley decided he

he Socceroos are on the verge of qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals after a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Asian group qualifier yesterday. The Australians, on top of their group with 13 points, could become the first team to qualify for South Africa if Bahrain and Qatar, both on four points, were to draw their match in Manama. Australia’s goals were a long time coming after a flat first half where the Uzbeks looked the more dangerous on the counterattack and through the dangerous free-kicks of skipper Server Djeparov. But goals from substitute striker Josh Kennedy and a penalty from Harry Kewell inside the final 25 minutes kept Australia unbeaten after five games, without conceding a goal. The Socceroos have three qualifiers remaining in June against Qatar in Doha, and home games against Bahrain and Japan. The Uzbeks faded in the second half as they felt the effects of their long flight and short preparation after last Saturday’s 4-0 home win over Qatar to revive their qualification hopes. They almost had a dream start when striker Farhod Tadjivev, who scored a hattrick in their win over Qatar, sprinted onto a through ball in the ninth minute, but his shot went across Mark Schwarzer and just wide of the far post.

That meant sending out an SOS to Shearer, despite the fact that Ashley has passed on previous opportunities to install the club’s greatest ever goalscorer in the manager’s office. Shearer, who has mostly worked as a television pundit since hanging up his boots three years ago, had made it clear he wanted the job in January 2008, when Sam Allardyce was sacked. He had also signalled that, subject to certain conditions, he would be prepared to take over when Keegan’s second spell as manager ended in acrimony in September. Just in time for the Masters, Golf Digest will release its biennial list of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses”, and for only the second time in 25 years there is a new No 1 – Augusta National. The home course of the Masters has replaced Pine Valley atop the list, which will be in the May edition of the magazine that hits news stands next Tuesday. Augusta National was at No 3 two years ago. Pine Valley is No 2, followed by Shinnecock Hills, Cypress Point and Oakmont Country Club. Pebble Beach, the only other course to be ranked No 1 ahead of Pine Valley, has slipped to No 6 in the 2009-2010 list, although it remains atop the “Greatest Public Golf Courses” list. Rounding out the top 10 are Merion Golf Club outside Philadelphia, Winged Foot Golf Club in New York, Fishers Island Club in New York and Seminole Golf Club in south Florida.

Shark gear Just in time for his return to the Masters, Greg Norman has a new equipment deal. Norman said on Tuesday he has joined the staff of TaylorMade Golf Co, agreeing to play its clubs, golf ball, use its golf bag and wear its logo on the inside of his cap. Australia’s Tim Stewart secured the fourth and final qualifying spot after a play-off,

beating eight other players who finished at 2 under after two rounds. Bhullar started the second round in a share of eighth place and four shots behind overnight leader Mikko Ilonen of Finland, a former British Amateur Championship winner. “I actually set a target of 5under for today, although I managed to finish in 4-under. But it’s okay,” the 20-year-old

Indian said. “I’m really happy now that I’m on my way to the British Open. “I’ve been watching the British Open since I was a kid and to actually get to play there is truly a dream come true.” Liang was the first player from mainland China to play all four rounds of the British Open when he made his debut last year. The former Asian No 1 is again aiming for a weekend finish in the Open.

recovering from a brain tumour, said he now plans to set up two golf schools in Thailand as well as a new course near his home in northern Spain. “A course in Santander,” the coastal city near his home in Spain. “That’s been my dream for a long time,” he said. “In the 1980s I already looked at some land... The design and the blueprints are already done,” said the Spaniard. He said it would be a links course “that would make you think you are approaching the cathedral of golf, at St Andrews” in Scotland. Another of his dreams has been to open a school for professional and amateur golfers. “Now there is a plan to set up two schools and two courses in Thailand,” he said. Regarded as one of golf’s all-time greats, Ballesteros won five Majors during his stellar career. He was also an influential figure in the Ryder Cup, winning 20 points from 37 matches and captaining Europe to victory over the United States at Valderrama in Spain in 1997. He told Marca that one of his most memorable shots was at the Lancome Trophy in Paris when, kneeling down on the ground, he hit the ball 200 yards to the green from under the trees. Another was at the 1983 Ryder Cup in Palm Beach, Florida. He tied a match with Fuzzy Zoeller after hitting a shot at the 18th hole from a steep bunker with “water to the right and wind blowing from the left to the right.” “Jack Nicklaus said he had never seen a shot like it... I still keep that club here in my house,” he said. He mentioned Nicklaus as among the players he most admired. Other sporting heroes include American cyclist Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, Spain’s two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso and world No 1 tennis player Rafael Nadal.
