REDREVOLT GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Times are tough – so fight back! By Daniel Wu Actor

I

think the best way to think of life is as a struggle. You’re always gonna be struggling – you have to be a fighter to get through. If you give up, then you’re giving up on life. Times are tough right now but if we keep fighting we will get through this. And it will pass in a few years. That’s life, and we have to deal with it.

overnment House has been reduced to an island by a sea of red-shirt protesters, a red sea that wants to drown the incumbent administration. Camped out around Government House, the red-shirts are bent on pressuring Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to call a general election.

Déjà vu? If you believe this is deja vu, think again. These anti-government demonstrators wear red not yellow, and unlike the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), they worship former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. “I have Thaksin’s photo hanging around my neck because it’s a symbol of our rally,” said a demonstrator who did not wish to be named. Protesters don’t get the photos for free – each costs Bt20. “I bought it from a stall close by,” explained the man, who had travelled from Phuket solely to join the rally. Students from Khon Kaen, Naresuan and Chiang Mai universities are also participating in the red-shirts’ movement. Calling themselves “Seree DAILY

Panyachon” (Liberal Intellectuals), the students have vowed to strengthen the rally with their support. Thanks to the huge number of demonstrators, trade is brisk. Stalls offering all sorts of red products have mushroomed. The best-sellers are red T-shirts and feet-clappers. Also popular are hats, shoes, caps, umbrellas, scarves, headbands and sandals – all red, of course. Free water is provided, but most demonstrators have to pay for their own food. There is free somtam for those willing to wait in long queues. Toilets are rather dirty, and the smell can be overwhelming. Makeshift public bathrooms with water tanks and canvas partitions are available for anyone who needs to wash. Free medical services are also on hand around the clock, while red guards patrol 24 hours a day. People are searched as they enter the rally site. Once they get inside, there are sharptongued, pro-Thaksin figures on stage and occasional live music shows to keep them entertained. When evening comes, the face of their hero Thaksin often appears, giving phone-in speeches on screens.

While the political unrest means rich pickings again for the vendors at the Government House protest site, red has replaced yellow as the hot-selling colour. Red shirts, foot clappers and headbands are flying off the stalls. Unsurprisingly, the best-seller is the T-shirt – every protester needs one. “I’ll probably sell well over a thousand shirts at this rally,” says one vendor, a veteran of red-shirt rallies in every province. The feet-clapper is another big seller, since it symbolises the red-shirts’ opposition to the yellow-shirts of the People’s Alliance for Democracy. A variation on the foot shape is the heart-shaped clapper, which shows support to expremierThaksin Shinawatra. Both types cost Bt20. “I sell red merchandise here after finishing my work in a bank. I come with my family. I can rally and earn money at the same time,” says another vendor. A red headband will cost you Bt10, or you can take your pick from photos of Thaksin, wristbands in the colours of the Thai flag, horns, umbrellas and sandals. Face painting is popular too, with both made-to-order designs and the national flag available for just Bt10. “I come here to create works of art and earn money at the same time,” says one face painter. Exhausted protesters can revive themselves with a massage for Bt100 per hour. “I normally work at Sanam Luang but I moved to this place because there are lots of people here,” says a masseuse. “Here I can earn Bt400-Bt500 a day.” Thidarat Na Pattalung

Floods, hailstones and pileups as city gets an early taste of rainy season D A I LY X P R E S S

DAILY XPRESS/KORBPHUK PHROMREKHA

orrential rain hit Bangkok yesterday afternoon, causing floods and pileups on many roads. “The downpour lasted for more than two hours,” said Sanya Cheenimit, deputy director of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Drainage and Sewerage Department, adding that floods were reported on Ratchawongse, Sukhumvit and Lat Ya roads.

Battered by gales Around the Royal Plaza, drains overflowed and floodwater lapped around the ankles of visitors to the annual Red Cross Fair. Battered by gale-force winds, the vendors struggled hard to keep their stalls open. Elsewhere in the capital, traffic came to a standstill on portions of Paholyothin, Ngam Wong Wan, Ploenchit, Wireless, Bang Na-Trat, Rama I and Sukhumvit roads. On the outbound lanes of the Thai-Belgian Friendship Bridge, pileups ensnared 14 vehicles. Five more were involved in shunts after losing control in a tunnel close to the Huai Khwang area.

Floods inundate a section in Soi Udomsuk off Sukhumvit Road after heavy but brief rain yesterday. Residents of Bangkok’s Lat Phrao and surrounding districts were hit by a storm of hailstones that measured up to two centimetres in diameter. The capital’s traffic jams only began to ease after 2pm as officials worked hard to drain the floodwaters.

Northern storms forecast The Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms with strong winds

and hailstorms for northern Thailand today and tomorrow, the result of a high-pressure weather front. In the northern province of Phitsanulok, a storm uprooted trees and damaged buildings including a temple hall yesterday. In the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, hundreds of houses in Mueang district suffered serious damage. “Roofs were blown off

and locals had to run for their lives as the storm threatened to smash their houses at any moment,” said Ban Pheu village head Somprason Seetaso. Tim Muangklan, a Khon Kaen resident, said she and her children escaped harm but the storm took its toll. “Our car and motorcycle were badly damaged. It’ll cost about Bt200,000 to fix,” Tim said.

Owners and residents of luxury hotels and condos will soon have to move on from the banks of the Chao Phya to make way for the public recreation areas being planned by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. “Within a year, the public will be able to enjoy themselves in mini parks located along the river, just like people in other cities,” said a deputy governor who asked not to be named. He added that BMA Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra is in the final stages of drafting a law to empower administration officials to expropriate land presently occupied by several luxury hotels and condos. “Hotels offer luxury dining to deep-pocketed guests who want to enjoy the scenic river view, but this is at the expense of all ordinary Bangkok residents,” the deputy governor said. “If Bangkok is to be the world’s No 1 city in line with our plans, their cooperation with the law is necessary.” He also noted that to boost tourism, Sukhumbhand plans to extend the expropriation policy to cover main canals in the city in a bid to revive Bangkok’s past glory as the “Venice of the East”. Those shocked by this report should contact relevant authorities. Or check the date at the top of the page. Happy April’s Fool Day!

SLIMMING AT SEA

In a bid to tackle the rising obesity problem, the Public Health Ministry has teamed up with the Royal College of Physicians to organise the largest display of aqua-aerobics in the world, with 2009 participants. The bid to break the world record comes after the health agencies learned that rates of obesity in people aged 20 to 29 have shot up from 2.9 to 21.7 per cent in recent years while those aged 40 to 49 are almost twice as likely to be obese.

DAILY XPRESS/WATCHARACHAI KLAIPONG

Thousands will bid for the aqua-aerobics world record in Pattaya’s surf this month

Moreover, a 2008 Department of Health study showed 34 per cent of men and women’s waist-

lines exceed the circumference considered safe – 90 centimetres and 80cm, respectively.

“People with obesity are at risk of metabolic syndrome, high blood-sugar and lipid levels, high blood pressure, and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke,” said Deputy Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodhi. “For every 5cm increase in their waistline, the risk of diabetes increases three to five times,” he added. Royal College of Physicians president Dr Somwang Danchaiwijit advises that 30 minutes of exercise per day is effective for burning calories and increasing the function of the heart and lungs. Aqua-aerobics is also good for those with arthritis and backache

as the water supports the body. The event will be held in the sea at Pattaya on April 25 and applicants can register at www.rcpt.org/form/nofatacception.php from now until

April 15. Participants will need a swimming costume and can bring along a buddy to keep them company. Pongphon Sarnsamak

How to smuggle cellphones

To smuggle cellphones into prison, Brazilian inmates have turned to a much older form of communication: carrier pigeons. Guards have intercepted two carrier pigeons carrying cellphones to detainees at a prison in Sorocaba, some 100 kilometres from Sao Paolo, a spokeswoman for the state penitentiary system said. Each pigeon was carrying a small bag containing a cellphone and charger. They were caught in two successive days, last Wednesday and Thursday. Honda has developed a way to read patterns of electric currents on a person’s scalp as well as changes in cerebral blood flow when a person thinks about four simple movements – moving the right hand, moving the left hand, trotting and eating. Honda succeeded in analysing such thought patterns and then relaying them as wireless commands for Asimo, its human-shaped robot.

‘Superpill’ causes excitement Healthy people could cut their risk of heart disease in half with a new “superpill” that combines low doses of aspirin and drugs that lower blood pressure and cholesterol, a study said on Monday. “We believe that the polypill probably has the potential to reduce heart disease by 60 per cent and stroke by 50 per cent,” lead investigator Salim Yusuf told reporters at the American College of Cardiology. “The thought that people might be able to take a single pill to reduce multiple cardiovascular risk factors has generated a lot of excitement. It could revolutionise heart-disease prevention as we know it,” Yusuf said. The polypill contains low doses of three medications against high blood pressure; simvastatin, which lowers LDL – or bad cholesterol – and aspirin, a known blood-thinner. Side-effects in patients taking the polypill were the same as when taking one or two medications. – A P

‘FORGED WILL’ Feng shui master insists Nina Wang left her HK$100-bn estate to him A F P , Hong Kong

A

feng shui master who claims late Hong Kong tycoon Nina Wang was his lover has been accused of basing his claim to her fortune on a forged will. The South China Morning Post said that lawyers for Wang’s family told a Hong Kong court that the signature on the will on which Tony Chan based his claim is fake. The lawyers told the hearing that a British forensic handwriting expert had analysed 80 specimens of Wang’s signature from 2003-2007 before coming to his conclusion, the newspaper said.

Wang died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 69, leaving an estate estimated to be worth up to HK$100 billion (Bt453 billion) which has been the subject of bitter wrangling.

Chan’s claim Chan claimed to have had a long-standing relationship with the eccentric billionaire, and says she made a will in 2006 naming him as her sole beneficiary. Keith Ho, a lawyer for Chinachem Charitable Foundation controlled by Wang’s siblings, told reporters outside the court that the allegations of forgery were only coming

to light now because it had taken time to gather evidence. The foundation, which has challenged the validity of the will in Chan’s possession, claims Wang left it her estate in a will made in 2002. Chan said in a statement he denied “any suggestion of forgery”. Before her death, Wang – who often wore mini-skirts and pigtails – fought a bitter eight-year court battle with her father-in-law for the estate of her late husband Teddy, who was kidnapped in 1990. His body was never found and he was legally declared dead nine years after his disappearance. Wang then built his company, Chinachem, into a real-estate empire.

Doubly talented Jin Sha, who is also an actress, says she doesn’t draw on any particular inspirations for her songs. “But I think I sing better when I write both the melody and the lyrics myself.” Does she consider herself a singer first or more of an actress? “I love both professions, so I’m happy acting in a TV series and singing its soundtrack.” Jin Sha is one of the singers on Singaporean star Lin Jun Jia’s 2008 hit album “Sixology”. JJ Lin, who also records on the Ocean Butterflies label is behind the success of many artists, including Taiwanese stars A-Mei and the Comic Boys. “JJ is a great guy. More than 400 restrooms were available, sufficient for the 25,000strong crowd, and plenty of bins were provided, with separate containers for metal and glass, paper and plastic, and wet rubbish. That didn’t stop a lot of garbage from ending up on the beach to be collected by volunteers and some festival-goers the following morning.

Curry that puff Here’s how to make pineapple souffle with Thai curry ice cream LOS ANGELES TIMES

T

hey may be light as air, but these tender souffles – flavoured with fresh pineapple puree and topped with a small scoop of spiced Thai curry ice cream – are rich in colour and flavour, and they make for a dramatic presentation. The dessert, from Gordon Ramsay at the London in Hollywood, California, catch the eye with their contrasting textures too.

Thai Curry Ice Cream 1 piece fresh galangal, peeled and chopped 1 large stalk lemongrass, chopped 12 kaffir lime leaves 1 piece fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 1 piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 1 small chilli, stemmed and diced 8 sprigs fresh cilantro 2 cups heavy cream 2 cups milk 10 egg yolks 1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar In the bowl of a food processor, combine the galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves, turmeric, ginger, chilli and cilantro and process until pureed. You could also pound the ingredients, one at a time, with a mortar and pestle and then mash them together to form a coarse curry paste. In a medium saucepan, combine the curry paste with the heavy cream and milk and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. While the milk comes to a simmer, whisk together the yolks and sugar in a medium bowl. Whisk a cup of the milk mixture into the egg yolks to warm them, then add the egg yolks to the simmering milk. Stirring frequently, heat the mixture until it thickens to a custard. Strain the custard into a bowl set over a bowl of ice water; stir until custard cools completely. Freeze in an ice-cream maker. This makes five cups of ice cream, more than you need for the souffle recipe.

Pineapple reduction 1 large pineapple, about 4 1/2 pounds 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon water

Peel and core the pineapple, then chop into large pieces. Puree the pieces in a blender until smooth. Place the puree in a strainer lined with a triple layer of cheesecloth. Gather up the cheesecloth and gently squeeze, draining the juice until you have a cup and a half of puree remaining. Save the juice for another use. In a shallow, heavy-bottom saucepan, stir together the sugar with a tablespoon of water. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar melts and caramelises. Stir in the pineapple puree and cook, stirring frequently, until the pineapple has cooked down and turned golden, about 15 minutes. When you first stir in the puree with the sugar, the sugar will harden temporarily. It will re-melt and incorporate with the pineapple as the pineapple cooks down. Remove from the heat to a small bowl to cool, then cover and refrigerate until needed. You should have three-quarters of a cup of pineapple, slightly more than is needed.

Souffle base 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces 3 egg yolks

In a medium bring the milk, vanilla pod and seeds to a fast simmer over high heat. While the milk warms, combine the sugar, flour and butter in a medium bowl. Rub together with your fingers to form a crumble. Remove the vanilla pod from the simmering milk and stir in the crumble. Cook, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom while stirring to prevent burning, until the mix forms a paste and begins to ball up. Continue cooking until you see a thin, dry film on the bottom of

the pan, about six minutes. Put the mixture in the bowl of a stand mixer and, with the mixer running, whisk in the egg yolks, one at a time, until incorporated. Continue to whisk the mixture until the souffle base has cooled to room temperature. Set aside, or cover and refrigerate until needed. Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a small bowl, combine the coconut with two-thirds of a cup of sugar. Lightly butter the sides of each of 12 ramekins, then dust with the coconut-sugar mixture. In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a large bowl if using a hand mixer, whisk the egg whites and remaining two-thirds of a cup plus two teaspoons sugar to medium peaks. In a separate large bowl set over a pan of simmering water, whisk together the souffle base and pineapple reduction until warm. Remove from heat. Stir in the lemon juice until combined. Fold the egg whites in gently. Bake until puffed and light golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Top each souffle with a small scoop of ice cream. Serve immediately.

WHEN YOU FIRST STIR IN THE PUREE WITH THE SUGAR, THE SUGAR WILL HARDEN TEMPORARILY. IT WILL RE-MELT AND INCORPORATE WITH THE PINEAPPLE AS THE PINEAPPLE COOKS DOWN.

Top-ranked Serena Williams twice lost five games in a row Monday but finished with a flourish and beat China’s Zheng Jie 7-5 5-7 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at the Sony Ericsson Open. Serena Williams, seeking a record sixth Key Biscayne title and her third in a row, smacked an ace with her final swing, then raised a fist and began to pogo. One, two, three, four times she hopped, showing uncommon exuberance over reaching the quarter-finals in a tournament she dominates. But survival is something to celebrate, and Williams barely made it out of the fourth round. – AP

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has highlighted Barcelona as the biggest threat to his side’s chances of retaining their Champions League title. “Barcelona are the form team, they have been terrific this season and everyone is taking notice of them,” Ferguson said. “They can be a threat to anybody and are quite rightly one of the favourites,” the veteran Scottish boss added. Ricky Hatton

Ricky Hatton thinks Manny Pacquiao’s big win over Oscar De La Hoya in December was a fluke. Hatton is counting on beating the Filipino star on May 2 in Las Vegas. “Any win against Oscar is a magnificent one. Is that the Oscar De La Hoya we have come to love? I don’t think so,” Hatton said. “And only Oscar can say what happened on the scales. He looked a shell of the Oscar we know. I don’t think it was hard to beat Oscar that night.”

IT’S FIGHT NIGHT European nations’ battle for 13 World Cup places hots up AFP, Paris

E

urope’s fight for 13 World Cup places hots up tonight with seven months to go before the end of qualifying for South Africa 2010. Nine group winners and four runners up from a two-leg playoff slot into place at the momentous, 32-nation football jamboree from June 11 to July 11 next year, the first finals to be held in Africa. Reigning world champions

Italy have a top-of-the-table clash with Republic of Ireland in Bari, 1998 winners France complete a double-header at home to Lithuania and European champions Spain meet Turkey in Istanbul. Holland, who impressed on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Scotland in Amsterdam, host Macedonia. France can take a significant step towards reaching next year’s World Cup with success against Lithuania for the second time inside a week. Franck Ribery’s stylish contribution on a bumpy pitch in Kaunas on Saturday has helped smooth France’s path to South

Africa 2010. If they do the double on this ‘return’ leg against Lithuania coach Raymond Domnenech’s side can leapfrog the overachieving 52nd ranked team in the world and move into second in Group Seven. Striker Fernando Torres warned European champions Spain to beware of a Turkish backlash in the return fixture. “We must be humble in taking on any rival and all the more so with Turkey as they have a great team,” he said “They made things tough for us last Saturday and they will do all the more so tonight.”

Brazil brew up trouble for Peru

Robinho relaxes in Brazil.

With only one point between them in the race for four Latin American World Cup qualifying berths Argentina and Brazil, seven world crowns between them, face stiff midweek challenges. Brazil have yet to find their best form, winning only four of their opening 11 matches on the long road which they hope will lead to South Africa. Despite their less than stellar form, however, Brazil should have no trouble polishing off the Peruvians. With just one win to their credit to date, the Peruvians are a far cry from the vintage of three decades ago, when a side led by the swashbuckling Teofilo Cubillas reached the second phase of the finals in Argentina. Argentina face a tough trip up into the thin air of La Paz.

RUTHLESS

Scrapping the star system has put manager Capello in the driving seat as England go gunning for Ukraine

F

rank Lampard believes Fabio Capello’s refusal to pander to the egos of England’s pampered superstars has played a key role in putting the team on course for the World Cup finals. After the indulgent reigns of Sven Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren ended in failure, Capello moved quickly to shatter the sense of entitlement and complacency that pervaded the England squad when he took charge last year. Now Capello’s side can take a significant step towards next year’s tournament in South Africa by maintaining their 100 per cent start to the qualifying campaign against Ukraine at

Sheva dreams of Wembley redemption

Wembley tonight. Key to the process has been Capello’s ruthless treatment of Michael Owen, who was once a mainstay of the team but couldn’t even win a call-up. Even David Beckham has been forced to accept a bit-part role. It hasn’t taken long for Capello’s regime to play off. Four successive wins have fired England to the top of Group Six and another victory over Ukraine would give them one foot in the finals already. Chelsea midfielder Lampard admits it was about time England’s underachievers were given a reality check. “We needed a very strong leader who had his own mind,” he said. “With Capello you can

WE NEEDED A VERY STRONG LEADER WHO HAD HIS OWN MIND.WITH CAPELLO YOU CAN SEE THAT. Frank Lampard see that. The best managers I’ve worked with have a fear ele-

ment, but it’s not a fear where you can’t speak to them. It’s about the decisions he makes for the good of the team. “When he came in, a lot of people made a thing of the WAGS and a lack of an England team that really cared about results. There was an element of truth in a lot of what was said. We just needed someone to put us in line a little bit and concentrate on what we’re doing. “At times those things can be a slight culture shock, when you are told you need to do this, you need to wear that. But then you start winning games and you get a really good feeling about things. You get a belief and it’s very easy to handle be-

cause you’re winning. “That’s maybe what we needed. It was easy to see we played as individuals too much in the past. We have very good individuals, but the team didn’t perform because we weren’t playing as a group. “You need to have humility and to be selfless. You need to work for your mate next to you, to play out of position if that’s what is required. That’s something Capello needed to bring.” Lampard admits he was once so sure of his place that he didn’t even bother to check the squad announcements. That complacency is gone and he now has to ignore his attacking inclinations.

talian coaching legends Marcello Lippi and Giovanni Trappatoni will be on opposite benches as Italy host Ireland in a crucial World Cup qualifier tonight. Italy lead group eight by two points from Ireland following Saturday’s matches in which the world champions won 2-0 in Montenegro and a late own goal from Kevin Kilbane cost the Irish a home win against Bulgaria. But if anyone can lead the plucky Irish to victory in Italy then it is the greatest club coach in the history of the Italian game. Ukraine forward Andrei Shevchenko is dreaming of scoring a goal at Wembley against England tonight in a 2010 World Cup qualifier to try to forget the last three miserable seasons. “I’m dreaming about a goal at Wembley because it would be my 40th for the national team,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Most of all I dream about scoring a goal that helps us to qualify. This match is vital but the one against Croatia will be the key.” Shevchenko will run out at the new Wembley for the first time and he is hoping his team can upset the home side. – A F P

Ireland’s coach Giovanni Trapattoni shares a joke with his players during a training session in Dublin. he has sat on the bench at giants such as AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Benfica and Bayern Munich. He won titles in four different countries, including seven

in Italy, and all three European competitions, including the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup. Lippi’s achievements probably would outshine almost any

other coach, but not Trappatoni, as he has won only five Italian titles and a single European trophy, the Champions League, all with Juventus. However, what he does have that Trapp hasn’t is international success having guided Italy to the World Cup three years ago. Even so Lippi has nothing but admiration for his opposite number. “At 70 years old he still coaches with the enthusiasm of a boy,” he said. “That’s why he’s called to all corners of the globe to teach football. “I have a lot of respect for him because he is the reference for our generation, for determination, for shrewdness, dedication,” said Lippi.

The proof is that I am alive and that I can do many things, that I can talk and I can think perfectly. olfing great Seve Ballesteros has spoken for the first time about his battle to survive a brain tumour, describing his fight for life as akin to playing for a sixth Major. The Spaniard has had three operations and is currently undergoing a fourth round of chemotherapy since he collapsed on an escalator at Madrid’s Barajas airport on October 6, 2008. Speaking to Spanish sports daily Marca, the 51-year-old recalled how he had snapped at a woman who had attempted to help. “I remember I told her ‘Madam, shut up, you are making a scene.’” Despite the pleading of airline staff who wanted him to see a doctor immediately, Ballesteros dragged his suitcase out to where his nephew Ivan was waiting for him, intent on keeping a lunch date with his son Miguel. “I just got into the car and told him: ‘If you knew what had happened to me.’” Ballesteros never made lunch. After fainting again at the door of the restaurant he was taken to Madrid’s La Paz hospital, where a scan confirmed a diagnosis that was to send shockwaves around the world. “They were very clear with me, they told me: ‘This is a tumour, it is lucky it is in a place on the right side [of the brain]. “At that moment, I was shocked. You are fine and suddenly they tell you that, can

As a lover of red meat and red wine, it is not the kind of lifestyle that Ballesteros would have chosen, but his spirits have been lifted by the reaction of golf fans all over the world, more than 300,000 of whom have sent messages of support since October. “I knew they admired me but I did not know that they loved me so much,” he said. It will be some time before Ballesteros knows what his future holds and he offered an insight into the lows he has had to endure over the last few months. “When you wake up in the morning, you do not want to get out of bed and you say, ‘Where do I go?’”.

Seve Ballesteros’ competitive spirit seemed intact despite multiple surgeries to his brain. He said his brother Baldomero told him that after waking up from one of his operations his first words were: “British Open. Must win it on Saturday.” Ballesteros won a record 50 times on the European tour. He also has three British Open trophies and two Masters titles, becoming the youngest winner at Augusta before Tiger Woods trumped his record. Along the way, Ballesteros earned many admirers for his brash swagger and imaginative play, especially in Britain and the United States. “The [British public] always made me feel very loved, very loved,” Ballesteros said before breaking into tears. “It’s the corner of the world where the sport is best understood, and in a way that’s where it all started for me, the first big step of my career and also the last of my sporting time. Everyone knows the British Open is my favourite tournament. “What I’m most proud about, if you ask me what my greatest victory was, is to have made golf a popular sport, as it is today, but in those moments it was badly looked upon and rejected by a large part of society.” A withered Ballesteros was not concerned about the public’s reaction to his physical image. “Nothing worries me,” he said. “That the least! These wounds, they are wounds of war.”

orld champion Lewis Hamilton says his drive from 18th on the grid in Melbourne to a third place finish had taught him a valuable lesson – never give up. The Briton crossed the line fourth in a race that was won by Jenson Button, but was later promoted to third when Jarno Trulli received a time penalty for overtaking in a safety-car period.

“I’m a fighter, I’ve never given up at any stage of my motorsport career – both on and off the track – and last weekend was the same,” he said ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix this week. “I pushed like crazy on every single lap of the race, always looked for the gap and worked with the team over the radio to find every possible way of making us go quicker. “This was a fantastic result

for me, but also a brilliant team effort – our strategy was perfect, the input from the pitwall was superb and everything came together really well.” Asked what he learned from the race, he said it was never to throw in the towel. “I learnt to never, ever, ever, give up,” he said. “We showed in Brazil last year that we would always fight until the very end, and we showed it again in Melbourne.

“I’ll never give up when I’m in the cockpit – I want to race as hard as I can and I’m looking forward to getting closer to the front and mixing it with the leaders again. “Also, Melbourne gave us a clearer idea of which teams have done the best job over the winter. I’ve got to say again how much respect and admiration I’ve got for Ross Brawn and all the men and women at Brawn GP.”

BANGKOK

THESPORT England have called up Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor to their squad for tonight’s World Cup qualifying clash with Ukraine at Wembley. The move came after Darren Bent limped out of training on the eve of the match. Tottenham forward Bent had himself been a late call-up to the squad after Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole suffered injuries in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly win over Slovakia. But his involvement with the national squad lasted only a few minutes before he was forced to head for the treatment room. Agbonlahor has been added to the squad as cover with head coach Fabio Capello indicating that he plans to start the match with Peter Crouch leading the attack. The Villa forward’s call-up represents a fresh snub to Michael Owen, although Capello again insisted that the injuryplagued Newcastle forward’s England career could be revived once he starts playing regularly for his club. “In every interview I’ve said the door for all the England players is open,” Capello said. “I respect Owen but I chose Agbonlahor because he has played a lot of games.” Rio Ferdinand, who returned to training after missing the Slovakia match with a back strain, is set to start alongside John Terry in central defence. Capello will also have Shaun WrightPhillips, who missed Saturday’s game with an ankle injury, available. With four straight wins in group six, England will be in a very strong position to reach next year’s finals in South Africa if they can beat Ukraine, the only team they have yet to face. The win over Slovakia augured well for England’s chances and Capello expects Ukraine to play a similar style. “It will be a very dangerous game, they play very well on the counter attack,” the Italian said. “It will be very tough. “I was very happy after the Slovakia match, our movement with and without the ball was very good and we created a lot of good chances. For me it was a good test. – A F P
