any parents face the problem of a child who’s too scared to go to school but won’t say why. Children are usually too shy to reveal violence they suffer in the schoolroom and the playground. But youngsters from six countries in Asia have been given a new space in central Bangkok to raise public aware-

ness of violence in schools through their own art works.

Films, plays and music Theatre, short films, animation, songs and more by 100plus pupils from Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam will be on display at the “Young Hearts Youth Arts and Media Festival” at Siam Discovery and Discovery Plaza on May 15 and 16.

“We want adults to understand that kids have important things to say about their own lives and should have the opportunity to tell their stories in mainstream media,” says Patrick Brochard, deputy regional director of Plan, a children’s development organisation working in 66 countries worldwide. Plan initiated the festival as part of its global “Learn Without Fear” campaign launched last year.

Nice 2 Meet U Popular Thai boy band Nice 2 Meet U has weighed in by making a short film – about an

elementary-school boy who refuses to go to school because he’s punished by his teacher every day. Four other short films made by youngsters from each of Thailand’s four regions will be on show as well. “This is a great chance to express our experiences through works we’ve created. Our short film tells of how some children face both domestic violence and violence in schools,” says Tunchanok Chomrit, a Mathayom 4 student from Watkhemapirataram School. The festival is supported by S Club, True Visions and RS.

French women think they’re fat France has by far the highest proportion of clinically underweight women in Europe, but only half of them think they are too thin, according to a new study. In other European nations the opposite is true: the number of women in Britain, Spain and Portugal, for example, who see themselves as seriously skinny easily outstrips the number who actually are. “This shows that what people consider an ideal weight in France is lower than in other countries,” said the study’s author Thibaut de Saint Pol. The study also reveals a big gap, both objective and subjective, between sexes. For instance, men and women don’t perceive their own deficient or excess weight in the same way, the study found. For women, he said, the body is related to beauty, and beauty to being thin. For men, however, carrying weight is felt in oneself and perceived in others – consciously or not – as projecting strength. AFP

‘HOT’ OBAMA The ‘au naturel’ cover shot of the US president is stirring up a storm By Karin Zeitvogel AFP, Washington

A

shot of a bare-chested US President Barack Obama on the cover of a popular magazine had some fans swooning on Wednesday, while others cried foul saying the image had been doctored. Political reporter Garrett Graff from The Washingtonian said the magazine had been swamped by readers who had seen the May edition showing Obama wearing nothing but swimming trunks and sunglasses, next to the line: “Our new neighbour is hot”. “And the comments are very split: a lot of people think it’s a great picture of the president and others disagree with it. “We were trying to capture in the cover image what makes

it so cool to be here right now,” said Graff. “And the real reason is that our new neighbour is hot.”

On The Washingtonian’s May edition the background is black and Obama’s swimming trunks are red. She went on to liken the allegedly altered image of Obama to the mugshot of OJ Simpson on the cover of Time magazine in 1994, which was doctored to make his face “darker, more shadowed”. But Graff said Moeller was up in arms over nothing. “We didn’t change the concept of the picture,” he said.

Paparazzo shot The picture was taken after Obama won the elections snapped by a paparazzo during a family holiday in Hawaii before he was sworn into office. But University of Maryland journalism professor Susan Moeller said the original photo had been altered. “In the original photo the president is wearing a black suit and walking from what appears to be sliding doors,” she said.

Mixed reviews On The Washingtonian’s website reaction from readers to the cover shot was mixed. “‘Hot?’ Juvenile,” wrote one reader. “The editors should be ashamed of themselves.” “Wonderful!” wrote Thea Repo. “We in Scandinavia are used to seeing men naked, so that is not a point. The point is that he is not old-fashioned and hypocritical. Great!”

Hong Kong lawmakers yesterday approved a tax on every plastic bag handed out by supermarkets as of July in a move to cut the mountain of waste created by the bags. The tax of 50 Hong Kong cents (Bt2.28) will be levied from July 1 in a total of 2,000 shops in the high-rise city of 7 million. Some 30 million plastic bags a day are thrown away in Hong Kong, accounting for some 6 per cent of the 17,500 tonnes of garbage sent to landfill sites every day. – DPA

Net essential to humanity Twenty years after the technol-

ogy was invented, the Internet was hailed as being vital for human progress during the 18th annual international World Wide Web Conference on Wednesday. The four-day congress brought together about 1,000 experts in the Spanish capital of Madrid. Tim Berners-Lee, one of the inventors of the Internet, said the technology would continue developing for a long time. Practices such as Internet searches and advertising have already become “sciences”, but many challenges remained, he said, criticising “walled gardens” in social networking. Other challenges included being able to check on the reliability of information and the protection of anonymity and privacy, Berners-Lee explained. Only about 20 per cent of the world population is now connected to the Internet, according to experts at the congress. In many developing countries, people are first able to log in over mobile phones, Berners-Lee said, stressing the usefulness of such connections. The Internet had become an “indispensable tool for the progress of human beings and their life in society”, Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe said in his opening address. DPA

TEEN CAUGHT IN HIGH-SEAS DRAMA Leader of Somali pirates to be tried as adult despite debates about his age By Luis Torres de la Llosa AFP, New York

Somali teenager captured by US forces in a high-seas drama and brought to New York has been ordered to stand trial as an adult on piracy charges that could put him in jail for life. Abdi Wali Abdi Khadir Muse, wearing a blue T-shirt and with head lowered as he entered federal court on Tuesday with an interpreter, faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted on the most serious charge of piracy, prosecutors said.

A

Testimony rejected Judge Andrew Peck ruled the young Somali would be tried as an adult after rejecting a claim by the defendant’s father that Muse was only 15. Prosecutors say he was over 18. “Muse’s father’s testimony was not credible,” Peck said.

“The court ruled the defendant must be treated as an adult.” The five charges filed against Muse were piracy “under the law of nations”, conspiracy to seize a ship by force, conspiracy to take hostages, and discharging and brandishing a firearm in the course of hostage-taking. “An act of piracy against one nation is a crime against all nations. Pirates target ships and cargo, but threaten international commerce and human life,” said prosecutor Lev Dassin in a statement. “Today’s charges demonstrate our commitment to hold pirates accountable for their crimes.” Muse was allegedly one of four Somali pirates who boarded the US container ship Maersk Alabama on April 8, and later fled taking its captain, Richard Phillips, as a hostage in a life boat. Muse, who prosecutors de-

On the fifth day of the ordeal, US Navy snipers shot dead the other three pirates and rescued Phillips.

Spectacular saga The Maersk Alabama saga captured the world’s attention and vividly highlighted the

dangers posed by low-tech pirates in some of the world’s most strategic shipping lanes. The incident was unusual because the unarmed, allAmerican crew fought back and prevented the pirates from taking control of their vessel. An issue surrounding Muse’s capture and the unusual decision to try him in the US courts was his age. Reports out of New York said he was 19. But Voice of America reported that his father, Abdilkadir Muse, said his son was 16, and had not been in previous trouble. Muse’s court appearance comes as other Somali pirates on Tuesday released an Asian chemical tanker they captured five months ago. They are still holding at least 17 other ships, with a total of nearly 300 hostages, as high-seas attacks this year soared to record levels. “Modern-day pirates bear little resemblance to the swashbuckling anti-heroes of popular fiction. Dropping numbers

The cascading collection of deep-blue high-mountain lakes in Band-e-Amir, located in the Bamiyan province of Afghanistan, became the country’s first provisional national park on Wednesday. This is the first step taken in the violence-plagued nation toward protecting one of its finest natural treasures.

Between 1989 and 2003 the giraffe population in the Maasai Mara declined by 95 per cent, warthogs by 80 per cent and impalas by 65 per cent, according to a report by the International Livestock Research Institute, which tracked serious declines in four other hoofed mammals. “These losses are widespread and substantial,” Joseph Ogutu, who led the

study, said. “And they are likely linked to the steady increase in human settlements on lands adjacent to the reserve.” The Maasai are a tribe of semi-nomadic herders, but they have increasingly settled in recent decades, upsetting the historic harmony that previously existed between the human and animals around the reserve. Large-scale crop cultivation, the massive expansion of permanent human settlements and increased presence of livestock have deprived wildlife of grazing areas, leading to a decline in numbers. Changes to Maasai life have been brought on by the changing weather pattern and

n Cambodia, where a decade-long tourism boom has been driven almost entirely by safe and easy access to the ancient Angkor temples, the rebirth of a seaside resort town is helping to lure visitors to country’s long-neglected coastline. The sleepy town of Kep on the southeast coast has been earmarked as Cambodia’s first “boutique” tourism destination, but for now it’s still pretty sleepy. The town of a few thousand people has maintained its un-

hurried, pastoral character. Unlike Sihanoukville, a lively huddle of guesthouses, bars and nightclubs on the central coast, Kep seems to be taking a relaxed path to tourism fame. With lush rainforests, crystalline waters and bountiful seafood, Kep is finding that the tourists don’t need much encouragement. A three-hour drive from Phnom Penh, Kep has become a favourite weekend retreat for expatriates and Cambodia’s burgeoning middle class. Kep’s famous crabs were among the many treasures that helped make town a playground for Cambodia’s French

rulers in the early 20th century. Along with former king Norodom Sihanouk, the French elite built dozens of mansions in the hills and sailed their yachts in the Gulf of Thailand. But like many regions in Cambodia, Kep was ravaged by the Americans’ secret bombing campaign during the Indochinese War and was forcibly evacuated during the Khmer Rouge’s 1975-1979 rule. Kep lay dormant for more than a decade, the seaside villas becoming overgrown with vines.

and hotels catering to all budgets have been built along the coast, including the exclusive Knai Banh Chatt Hotel. While the town has no beach and is separated from the sea by a strip of coarse red stones, a cheap 30-minute boat ride to Koh Thonsay – Rabbit Island – reveals one of Cambodia’s unspoiled pristine beaches. Kep’s greatest attraction is crabs cooked with local pepper and grilled fish on skewers and, for the more adventurous, grilled seahorse.

he government killed all the smokers, didn’t it? Didn’t an armed mob of people in white shirts tear down all the bars where people were allowed to smoke? Actually, the legions of grey shirts have managed to cling to several cloudy places in Bangkok, and we’re not just talking about designated puffing zones either. There still are many openair places all over Bangkok where you can enjoy a fag, great vibes, good drinks and cool music. Khao San Road has a few options. Hippie de Bar near the popular restaurant Tom Yum Kung has a spacious outdoor seating area under a big, leafy tree. Poor tree! A little further down the street, The Roof bar lets you smoke and at the same time keep an eye on the traffic below in case anti-tobacco crusaders show up, and there’s usually a live band playing too. A little more low-key on Samsen is the curbside bar

Amorosa

Ruay Rin Krin Chiva, which serves whiskey smoothies and music from the ’60s. You can smoke, all right, but you might find yourself ironically complaining about the traffic fumes. Folks are also still lighting up at the rooftop bars Pranakorn and Gallery on Ratchadamnoen and the Mediterranean-inspired Amorosa near Wat Po. And smokers are most welcome at Balcony and the

Telephone Pub on Silom Soi 4, where the chairs outside outnumber the ones indoors. On the other side on Surawongse Road, rustic reggae bar Joe’s is also good for a nicotine fix, not to mention cheap beer and tasty Thai grub. Ekkamai is heavy with airconditioning clubs where the first whiff of cigarette smoke sets off alarms, but at Happy Monday on Ekkamai 10 you can always smoke.

Non-smokers take refuge inside, but they’re in the minority because the little private park outside is a hit with the dek naew and young celebrities. RCA has the Garden, which has a thick green wall that pens in all the tarry fumes. It’s popular after hours with smokers coming from Route 66 and other less accommodating clubs on the strip. A lot of upscale clubs on Sukhumvit Soi 11 provide classy smoking areas with swanky ashtrays, but they insist on a dress code too, despite having Cheap Charlie’s in their midst. The 26-year-old bar in its own little alley isn’t so much a kiosk as a “growth” on the wall, but Charlie’s is on most night crawlers’ lists of all-time favourite places. The drinks are indeed cheap, starting at Bt60, the dress code is sandals and shorts or less, the music is at your request and, as for permission to smoke, your chokehappy lungs never had a friendlier environment.

iven the violence against Chiang Mai Gay Pride in February, it was not without concern that the Sao-Sao-ed group, formed in its aftermath, chose to return home and organise an event in the northern capital aimed at combating violence against LGBT. Following the mayhem that resulted in the blocking of some Chiang Mai streets over Songkran, there was also a question as to whether LGBT people would again fall victim to the ongoing conflict. On Tuesday, the day of the event, local tension was focused on the surrender to the authorities of those involved in the Songkran disorder. Although these same individuals are yet to be charged with the use of brute force that shut down Pride exactly two months ago, our event was left free of political entanglement this time around. However, despite authorisa-

tion by the municipality, our activity was temporarily disrupted by municipal workers who said they had to clear the venue for another event planned for the following day. While some of us slowly dismantled the stage to the demand of the municipality workers, we continued with the programme. During the discussion forum, Dr Kittikorn Sankhatiprapha from Srinakharinwirot University pointed out that the media’s misrepresentation of LGBT people as disgusting and scary betrayed the real nature of society’s notion of “acceptance”. Prof Sanan Wutthi from the Church of Christ in Thailand, meanwhile, pleaded with conservatives to stop using prejudiced interpretations of religious teachings to stigmatise LGBT people, which he likened to “hitting them on the head”. He revealed that there have been progressive movements internationally within different religions to accept

diverse groups of people based on the concept of human rights. Boripat Chuthanithi, representing the Office of the National Human Rights Commission, explored the future roles of the commission to protect LGBT people, according to the Constitution provision. Preeda Sai-upparat from Chiang Mai University’s Law Clinic stressed the need for corresponding legislation to promote and protect LGBT rights and for awareness-

raising about constitutional rights. The event ended with a peace-based spiritual activity with representation from three religions, surrounded by the photographs of the violence against Gay Pride and a big canvas displaying the group’s collective statement demanding public apologies from local government offices which condoned it. Two months on and the silence continues as if nothing happened.

Three-star Wiese Rose named NBA puts Bremen in final Rookie of the Year Goalkeeper Tim Wiese held his nerve to make three consecutive saves as Werder Bremen beat 10-man Hamburg 3-1 on penalties in their German Cup semifinal on Wednesday. Goals by Bremen’s Germany defender Per Mertesacker and Hamburg’s Bayern Munichbound striker Ivan Olic had meant it was 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, but home side Hamburg had captain David Jarolim sent off deep in injury time. Both sides had their chances to win the game in extra-time, but Bremen goalkeeper Wiese was their hero of the hour with a brave save in the 120th minute before making the three crucial saves in the shootout.“That was one of the best nights of my career,” said Wiese whose team will now face Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 30. – AFP

Cool Lazio enter Italian Cup final Long-range drives from Mauro Zarate and Aleksandar Kolarov secured the Italian Cup final for Lazio in a 2-1 win Wednesday over 10-man Juventus for an aggregate 4-2 score. Zarate’s firing skills froze the home crowd at Turin. – DPA

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is following up his record performance at the Beijing Olympics by changing some of the swimming technique that carried him to eight gold medals. As he shifts to focusing on shorter races, he hopes the new freestyle technique will increase his sprinting speed when he returns to competition next month. “You’ll all have to see. I’m not saying anything until we unveil it,” Phelps said with a grin. – AP

Mark Brown of New Zealand hits a shot during the first round of the Ballatine’s Championship.

onzalo Fernandez-Castano and Mark Brown held a slim lead after the first round of the Ballantine’s Championship yesterday but defending champion Graeme McDowell faces a battle to make the cut. The seven-under-par 65s hit by Fernandez-Castano and Brown put them a stroke ahead of Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, South Korea’s Kang KyungNam and the Netherlands’ Robert-Jan Derksen at the

US$2.7-million tournament. A further three players are on five-under while three-time major winner Ernie Els and world No 9 Henrik Stenson are a further shot adrift, among 12 players on four-under. New Zealander Brown set the early pace at the par-72 Pinx Golf Club, sinking six birdies and an eagle, the same as Fernandez-Castano. Brown, 34, said he was growing more confident in his game after a patchy spell. “The last two or three tournaments I’ve started to play a little better and get my confidence up a little bit, to peak for a Major in July back in Europe

[British Open]. It’s a step in the right direction.” But he said conditions were likely to worsen. “I think [on] this island, probably it will blow before the week is out and that will provide a different challenge,” added Brown, who captured last year’s Johnnie Walker Classic. Fernandez-Castano said: “I’m a little surprised, I have to say. The last couple of weeks have been great and, well, coming out here and shooting 65 in the first round, you can’t ask any better.” “It’s been absolutely fantastic, no wind at all,” the 28-year-old Spaniard said.

Danai leaves Ball in his wake

Danai Udomchoke had his revenge yesterday.

Danai Udomchoke booked his second straight quarter-final as he downed Australia’s Carsten Ball 6-4 3-6 6-3 in the US$50,000 Tallahassee Tennis Challenger yesterday. The unseeded Danai turned the tables on the Australian big-gun, who beat him in three sets in a Challenger event last year. “He had big serves. So it was important for me to scramble for returns,” said Danai who last week reached the semi-finals in Casablanca. Danai will play American Ryan Sweeting, a winner over compatriot Jean-Yves Aubone 6-4 4-6 6-2. It will be their first encounter. In the first round of the doubles , Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, champions in Casablanca, cruised past Americans JeanYve Aubone and Ryan Harrison 6-3 6-3. – X P R E S S

PITFALLS AHEAD Ferguson tells Manchester United Premier League title race is not yet run AFP, Manchester, England

lex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United players they still have work to do to win the Premier League title despite enjoying some breathing space at the summit. Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth here at Old Trafford moved United three points clear of second-placed Liverpool with a game in hand. Rafael Benitez’s team lost ground with a 4-4 draw with Arsenal on Tuesday and Wednesday saw Chelsea also fail to keep the pressure on after their goalless stalemate against Everton. United have six league games left, starting with Saturday’s match at home to Tottenham Hotspur and they also have to contend with a Champions League semi-final against Premier League rivals Arsenal on Wednesday. Ferguson’s English and European champions created plenty of chances against Paul Hart’s Pompey but, despite now being in a convincing position in the Premier League table, the United manager has told his players they must improve if they are to stay the course in the title race. “We’re in a better position than we were on Tuesday morning but having seen that second-half and how we got so casual, I’m not taking anything for granted and we’ve got to put the foot down all the time,”

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney scores a goal against Portsmouth in the 2-0 win at Old Trafford. Ferguson said. “I don’t even consider leeway in this situation and I don’t think we have a leeway and we’ve got to keep performing properly.” Ferguson will be without Gary Neville and John O’Shea for “several weeks” after the duo limped out of the game against Pompey. But the United manager expects Rio Ferdinand to return against Spurs at the weekend after resting him against Portsmouth. The England centre-back had missed several weeks with a groin problem before returning in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Everton at the weekend and was left out of the squad in mid-

week. But Ferguson added: “The fact he played extra-time last weekend and that was his first game in two or three weeks, it was too big a risk. “There was nothing wrong with his groin, it was just tiredness and with Jonny Evans being such a good performer, it was easy to do that. “Gary and John [O’Shea] will be out for several weeks.” Wayne Rooney opened the scoring against Portsmouth with his tenth league goal of the season before Michael Carrick made the game safe eight minutes from full-time. England midfielder Carrick said it had been important to United that they made the most of Liverpool’s slip-up.

Roy Keane’s eventful football career took another unexpected twist yesterday when he was appointed the new manager of Championship club Ipswich. The former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder has signed a twoyear contract at the Suffolk club, who sacked former boss Jim Magilton on Wednesday after it became clear that Ipswich had no chance of securing promotion to the Premier League this season. Keane, 37, has been out of work since leaving Sunderland in December but recently indicated that he was ready for a new challenge. “I truly believe that I am joining a club that has the potential, ambition and infrastructure to once again be a Premier League side,” the Irishman said. “The club’s owner and chief executive impressed upon me their total focus on achieving this quest at the earliest opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.” Having taken Sunderland from fourth from bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in 200607, his first season in charge, Keane knows what it takes to get teams into the top flight of English football. At Ipswich, he is expected to be backed with substantial funds with the owner, Marcus Evans, having already invested £12 million. – A F P

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard shows his frustration.

uus Hiddink admits Chelsea’s title challenge is over after the Blues were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Everton. Hiddink’s side are six points behind leaders Manchester United following Wednesday’s Stamford Bridge stalemate and Sir Alex Ferguson’s team can extend that advantage to nine points with a victory in their game in hand.

It would take a remarkable collapse from the reigning champions for Chelsea to get back in the race and Hiddink conceded the west London club’s hopes of silverware now lie with next week’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Barcelona and the FA Cup final against Everton next month. “We said before the game that the two teams chasing Man Utd must not waste any points to

keep in the race. The facts are we lost two points,” Hiddink said. “We must be realistic. Maybe mathematically there is still a chance but on the other hand you cannot waste points. “Now it is difficult. We have to focus now on only two roads in the Champions League and later against Everton in the FA Cup.” Although the English crown is almost out of Chelsea’s reach for a third successive season,

Hiddink insists his players’ commitment couldn’t be questioned, even if their rudimentary approach left something to be desired. “You can’t blame the team or say there was no desire to work but we didn’t work with the intelligence to break down this well-organised wall of Everton,” Hiddink said. “We wanted to go for the title so when you drop points there is disappointment. But we will recover.”

fter getting beat up in the opener, the Miami Heat got their fight back and returned the favour. Dwyane Wade scored 33 points, including the gamesealing three-point bank shot in the closing minutes, as the Heat beat the Atlanta Hawks 108-93 yesterday to tie their Eastern Conference opening-round play-off series at 1-1. The Heat were flattened 9064 in Game One as Wade was held to just 19 points, 11 below his league-best regular-season average on 8-of-21 shooting. However, the All-Star guard then found the bulls-eye, leading the bounce-back victory. “I took the same shots they

Pepe devastated over stamping Real Madrid’s Portuguese international Pepe, who faces a lengthy ban for a violent outburst against two Getafe players on Tuesday, said he felt “devastated” by his actions and will accept any penalty he is given. “I am devastated, and very sad,” the 26-year-old Brazilian-born player said . “All I can do is apologise to the players, their families, the fans and my colleagues,” he added. With the scores level at 2-2 and three minutes left in the Spanish League clash at Real’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Pepe shoved Getafe’s Francisco Casquero to the ground to concede a late penalty and then brutally stamped on the midfielder. gave me in the first game. I just made a couple and got my rhythm going,” said Wade, who shot 11-of-20, including a career-best six three-pointers. More importantly, Wade was proud of the way his teammates rebounded after Sunday’s humiliating 26-point blowout. “We’ve dropped games, but we’ve come back and won the next one because of our fight,” he said. “That’s one thing I love about our team. We have fight, and it’ll take you a long way.” Daequan Cook scored 20 points, with six of Miami’s 15 three-pointers. Jermaine O’Neal added 19 for the Heat, who host the next two games, beginning Saturday with the

home-court advantage. Mike Bibby netted 18 points, Josh Smith had 17 with 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who apparently took the Heat too lightly after the Game One rout. “We just weren’t hungry, I think we were kind of complacent and we didn’t act like we really wanted it,” said Hawks Joe Johnson, who finished with 16 points. “Tonight we came out as if we had won the game already.” Elsewhere, it was Denver Nuggets 108, New Orleans Hornets 93. Chauncey Billups scored 31 points, leading the Nuggets to their second lopsided victory over the Hornets for a 2-0 ad-

vantage in their Western Conference first-round series. “I’m in a nice groove right now, but it’s not me, it’s the team,” said Billups, who has 67 points on 18-of-30 shooting, including 12-of-15 from behind the arc in the two home wins. “We’re playing good right now.” In another game, it was Orlando Magic 96, Philadelphia 76ers 87. The Magic had no fourthquarter collapse this time around as rookie Courtney Lee scored 24 points, and the Magic held off a late charge before trimming the visiting 76ers to square their Eastern Conference first-round play-off series at 1-1.

arcelona turned on the style again at Camp Nou on Wednesday, crushing Sevilla 40 to restore their six-point lead at the La Liga summit. Real Madrid had closed to within three points with a morale-boosting, late 3-2 win over Getafe on Tuesday but Barcelona show no signs of cracking under the pressure and destroyed third-placed Sevilla even without talisman Lionel Messi. Real have been the experts of late goals this season, but Barcelona prefer seeing off teams with early goals and scored twice in the first 16 minutes to seize control. when they won the league title in 1990. “We are going for everything this season,” said Iniesta. “We played well tonight, scored good goals and got the points. “We have difficult games

against Valencia and Chelsea coming up so we can’t relax and have to keep on going.” The win was all the more impressive as it was achieved without the magical Messi who was left out after being unable to train due to stomach pains. Coach Pep Guardiola decided not to take any risks with a trip to Valencia on Saturday and then the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea three days later. “The way Barca are playing you have to be almost perfect to beat them,” said Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez. “They are beating top teams by three or four goals and were far superior to us tonight.” Valencia are now just two points behind Sevilla after beating Betis 2-1.

ROBBENGROUNDED Real Madrid midfielder Arjen Robben has been sidelined for up to three weeks with a leg injury, meaning he will miss the vital Barca match.

DAMPIER BACKS OFF After chatting with NBA officials, Dallas Mavericks centre Erick Dampier is toning down his plans to knock down the San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker. Dampier still promises to get physical with the speedy point guard in Game 3 of their playoffs, but he’s no long guaranteeing that “my first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back”. “I probably shouldn’t have said it like that,” Dampier said on Wednesday. “Maybe the way it came out, it sounded bad. ... I’m just going to go out there and play the way I’ve been playing.” Dampier vowed on Monday to drop Parker after the Frenchman turned Game 2 into a personal lay-up drill. Parker scored 38 points in 33 minutes, leading San Antonio to a 105-84 victory that tied the series at one game apiece. Once Dampier’s quote reached the league office, a “review” began, which essentially meant Dampier having to explain himself. “It wasn’t said intentionally to go out and hurt anyone,” Dampier said. “I mean, fouls happen in the game. It’s just that we want to shut down the paint and not give up any easy layups.” No punishment was announced by the league, and Parker pretty much brushed off Dampier’s threat. “I can’t focus on that,” he said. “It’s San Antonio and Dallas. We know they’re going to come back strong. They’re going to play very physical. They have a lot of character in that team, and just like we reacted in Game 2, they’re going to react as well. ... I’ll be ready.” Parker scored 24 points in the opener, but made only two field goals in the second half.

Now that Manchester United has regained control of the Premier League title race, manager Alex Ferguson hopes to snap Liverpool’s challenge. “We have to put our foot down all the time and I don’t think we have any leeway if we don’t perform properly,” said Ferguson after his team beat Portsmouth at home. >PAGE 25
