Chase Celebration of Life for Dr. Vagyi
I
n response to numerous requests for a community Celebration of Life for Dr. Michael Vagyi, the Neskonlith Indian Band, the Adams Lake Indian Band, the Little Shuswap Band, and the Village of Chase have organized one. The ceremony will be held on Friday, April 24th between 1:30 and 4:30 pm at Adams Lake Indian Band Gymnasium (6349 Chief Jules Road). Dr. Vagyi kept a photo of most of the babies he helped deliver on his office wall. These photos will be on display and at the end of the service you are welcome to take your picture.
People are also invited to email a story or condolences to ChaseWishes@gmail. com to be passed on to his family in Hungary. There will be a light lunch available. Born in Hungary on March 29, 1930, Dr. Vagyi immigrated to Halifax Canada on March 14, 1957. He settled in Chase in 1971 and began a 23 year medical practice serving the community he loved. He passed away peacefully on April 2, 2015 at the age of 86 in Royal Inland Hospital. He was an amazing, dedicated doctor who was devoted to providing care for all in need.

Hall Fundraiser Updates Submitted by Bev Iglesias
Chase Community Hall Pie Fundraiser is right on schedule to meet and exceed the goal of $8,000. On Saturday, Lakeside Concession & Mini Donuts stepped up by volunteering their time and product with 100% of proceeds to the Pie Raising Committee. $610.00 of those yummy mini donuts were sold! Thank you Dale & Doreen Balde for being great community sponsors. The new flooring was carefully put down last week, thanks Dwayne Gamble from Ashtons Floor Coverings who donated his
labour. By Friday night the stove was in place for it’s first trial run. A delicious meal was prepared for the Chase Lions 400 Club party, where once again the community stepped up to purchase whole pies and slices. Keep watching for updates as to the progress of the revamping of the Kitchen. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN. Tickets are still available, call Bev @ 250371-7136 or Lorna at 250-819-9736. Also, we are looking for pyrex pie plates for the big event - if you have any to donate or lend.
Rotary Food Drive Coming Up by Richard Waugh
Rotary International is a worldwide organization that focuses on both International and local projects. There is an ongoing program called Polio Plus, which is focused on the world-wide eradication of polio. We are involved in water and sanitation projects in developing countries, as well as disaster aid through the Shelter Box program and Disaster Aid. However, we also realize that there are needs in our own country, and in our own “backyards.” The Chase Rotary Club, in partnership with the Chase Hamper Society, is now in to year two of our Spring Food Drive to benefit those in need in the Chase and District, as well as to support breakfast and lunch programs at Haldane Elementary and Chase Secondary Schools. In 2014, there were 230 Christmas hampers delivered, compared to 225 in 2013. There were 273 emergency hampers given out in 2014, compared to 146 in 2013. In 2015 to date, there have already been 73 emergency hampers given out. You can see by these numbers, that the need is ever increasing. That is a major reason why the Chase Rotary Club is involved. The Spring Food Drive is planned to coincide with the
Kamloops Food Drive on April 25, and all food collected in Chase will stay in Chase! We will be distributing yellow Rotary Food Bags with the April 17 edition of the Shuswap market News, and will conduct a door to door pick up in the main residential area of Chase between 9 AM and Noon on April 25. Just place your “Yellow Bag of Help” on your front step, and a Rotarian will pick it up! For those living outside of the main residential area, you can drop your donation off at People’s Food and Drugs, or at Safety mart Foods in the bins provided. All donations will then be turned over to the Chase hamper Society, to be used for the benefit of needy families in the Chase and District. Chase Rotary would like to thank the Chase Hamper Society, the Chase Chamber of Commerce, Shuswap market News, the Kamloops Rotary Clubs, the Kamloops Food bank, NL Radio, Village of Chase, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Little Shuswap Indian Band, Safety mart Foods, Peoples Food and Drugs, and the citizens of Chase for all the support shown in helping to organize this event.

COP Coffee House Update
Submitted by COP We had another great Citizens on Patrol coffee house on April 10th. There was nearly a full house in attendance and 15 musicians showed up. Our last performer was a new person from Falkland and went by the name of Cash and sounded just like Johnny Cash. He really got the audience going; it was great fun. We will be having our last coffee house for the season on May 8th, so we hope to see you back again at the Chase Community Hall.

Write On: byHow-to write articles Kelsey Snelgrove Many events and activities get announced in the Community Events Bulletin each week in the Sunflower. The next step is writing an article about the event. A follow up article keeps your cause in people’s minds, reminding them to get involved next time. Showing our local events and activities also informs outsiders what the community is all about. In order to get coverage of more town happenings, I have been encouraging everyone to write and submit a little blurb for the fundraiser, group, project, activity, or event that they are a part of. Many say they can’t write, which is why I bring you the basics: The first sentence is called the lead. This is where you try to hook people into reading your
article. Put the most interesting thing about the event there, don’t bury it at the bottom! Your article should generally include the 6 W’s - Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How?. I don’t expect everyone to go around collecting quotes, but they are really fun to read and they allow you as a writer to show the story instead of telling it, and gives legitimacy. “When I see a quote in an article, I take it more seriously,” said Kelsey Snelgrove. I love getting photos in the Sunflower, and they don’t even need to be high resolution, cell phone photos are generally fine. I’m happy to help, just email your content to info@ chasesunflower.ca or call me for more info 679-8880.

BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers
The Apprenticeship of Duddy I was listening to the radio this week and they were replaying old tape of interviews with Mordecai Richler, which made me reflect on his most famous book and what I thought about it at the time of reading. My memories of the book are different now that I’ve visited Montreal and some of the streets his characters walked on. He does a wonderful job of bringing out the colours of culture and community,
Kravitz by Mordecai Richler and as an author he almost highlights that those colours aren’t always bright, there’s darkness in all of his characters. It’s both their failure and what makes them human. An important book for many people, if you haven’t taken the time to read it you should pick up a copy of Duddy Kravitz and walk through a difficult coming of age, and one path taken.
