SHUSWAP EXPERIENCE TRADE SHOW Submitted by the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce – Trade Show Committee
In 2016, The Chase & District Chamber of Commerce hosted the 1st Annual Shuswap Experience Trade Show at the Art Holding Memorial Arena in Chase, and we surpassed our goals thanks to the incredible support received from over 70 businesses from throughout Chase and Thompson/ Shuswap Region. The event saw 600+ attendees and the first 300 received a tote bag filled with inserts from participating businesses. B100 Radio was on site and airing live segments and interviews during the day which provided great exposure to the event and participating businesses. We are excited to build on the success of last year’s event and are hosting the 2nd Annual Shuswap Experience Trade Show on Saturday May 6th, from 9am - 3pm at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. The tradeshow will provide local businesses a platform to reach new customers, connect with existing clients, network with other businesses, and further establish your presence in Chase and the Shuswap region. The primary source of funding for the Shuswap Experience Trade Show is from sponsors. The funds provided will be used to strengthen and grow our membership, support economic development initiatives, promote our community, provide valuable support, tools and programs for our members, and ensure effective and efficient operations of our Visitor Center. April is Autism Awareness Month
ONE PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE Editorial submitted by Maria Kalinen
Autism is a mental condition characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships. Our son was diagnosed with autism at age 3 years and 11 months. He didn’t have speech at that point, he barely ate anything, and ran around by night instead of sleeping. He wouldn’t wear certain clothes and was having horrible, long lasting violent tantrums. He had repetitive obsessive behaviours, and he still engages in some of these behaviours like rocking on a chair. Yet, he always was able to make eye contact to people. At first I thought our son’s speech was delayed because I am from Finland and was speaking Finnish and English to him. Some autistic people will never learn to speak (yet can communicate by typing), and some will learn speak at a very young age or and some like our son, who at age 8 is now learning slowly to speak, yet many times people don’t understand his speech. Thanks to his behavioural interventionist, therapists and few more people, plus his aid and teacher in school he has come quite far from being non verbal. He goes to a “typical” school in Chase. There are many misunderstandings about autism. Our society, schools, parents and all public needs to be more educated about autism yet it isn’t. Even though autistic people have delays, difficulties with s o cia l,communic ationa l, behavioural fields, so many are so gifted and smart in
areas. In our society which often can be ignorant and expects all to fit in for of been criticized or rejected, autism often isolates families. It is a very hard job emotionally for all parents and families living with autism. Its often the parents who are under enormous stress raising autistic child, children or adult. It’s hard getting bad looks or sometimes sarcastic comments when your child throws a huge fit in public when something triggers his/ hers massive tantrum. My heart goes out to all the families living with autism. Getting respite or a break does good for parents’ mental health once a while. We get respite 3 days per month so we can relax and not worry about autism those days. Otherwise it sometimes can get heavy as mother with the stress autism causes in the hectic days. Small communities need more services and knowledge about autism, because not everyone can travel or afford expensive treatments to their autistic children or adults they take care of. To get glimpse of what austism for some children is like, go to www.youtube.com and find the video called “Can you make it to the end” by The National Autism society. In honour of Autism Awareness Month I encourage everyone to open their minds and learn more. Sincerely, Mother of beautiful gifted and smart autistic son. RCMP Report Submitted by Chase RCMP PROPERTY CRIME • On March 28th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of a Break and Enter to a shop on Lower Duck Range Rd, Pritchard. Several tools and other items were reported stolen. The theft occurred between March 25th and March 28th. • On April 8th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of mischief to the Canada Post mailboxes located at the intersection of Squilax Anglemont Road and Mabry Road in Lee Creek, BC. Several boxes had been opened with damage to several more. • On April 9th, 2017, Chase RCMP received a report of mischief at the vehicle charging station on Trans Canada Hwy, west of Chase. Sometime during the night suspects chopped the charging cords. Anyone with any information regarding the above investigations, or any other crime, is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. TRAFFIC • On March 31st, 2017, at approximately 1:00am, Chase RCMP officers on patrol observed a vehicle failing to stop at a stop sign on Shuswap Avenue in Chase, BC. A traffic stop was conducted. A 31 year old female was found to be driving while impaired by alcohol after failing a roadside screening test. She was issued a 90 Day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. • On April 17th, 2017 at 5:04 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a tractor truck and trailer rolled over into the ditch on the Trans Canada Hwy near Francois Road in Lee Creek,
BC. Investigation determined that an eastbound car had come to a stop, awaiting westbound traffic to pass, to complete a left hand turn from the highway. The eastbound truck, unable to stop in time, attempted to avoid hitting the car by driving onto the shoulder. The trailer entered the ditch, rolling onto its side causing the tractor unit to roll as well. The driver of the truck was treated at the scene by BC Ambulance Services for minor injuries. • On April 16th, 2017 at 8:45pm, Chase RCMP received a report of two lost females near Adam’s Lake Provincial Park. Two 21 yrs old females went with a group of people for a drive into the logging roads west of the park. After a period of time the 2 girls exited the vehicle and were subsequently left behind by the group. When the group returned to the park, friends of the girls became concerned for their safety and called police. Police, Kamloops RCMP Police Dog Services and Search and rescue were deployed and attended. Police located one girl who had separated from her friend. A local resident, who hearing of the lost girls assisted in the search, located the second female. BC Ambulance Services attended and ensured the girls were in good health. • The Chase RCMP would like to caution against leaving persons in unknown wooded areas. If people from your party get separated and don’t return, please call police immediately, remain on scene or nearby as information you can provide will assist in locating the missing people. If you are lost, remain as a group and do not separate from others, this will increase the ease in locating you and enhance your safety.

Later, they all get together. The priest begins: “When I found the bear, I read to him from the catechism and sprinkled him with holy water.
