n May 2016 a proposal came forward to Council from the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue - Station 106 Shuswap to place a kiosk in Chase to provide PFDs for children going out on water craft. Mayor Berrigan approached the Chase Rotary Club to see if they would be willing to partner with the Village of Chase and the Shuswap Marine Search and Rescue for the placement of the PFD kiosk in Memorial Park. Rotary agreed, and in December 2016 Village Council dedicated a location at Memorial Park near the Wharf and boat launch. The Village entered into an agreement with

the Rotary Club of Chase, and once the funds were secured through Rotary, the Shuswap Marine Search and Rescue group built and kiosk, installed it and provided the PFDs. Marine Search and Rescue monitors the number of PFDs regularly and makes sure there are plenty available for children to use. The PDFs are provided for children to ensure that when they are out on the water that they are kept safe. This is valuable public service and the Village of Chase is very grateful to the Rotary Club of Chase and the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Shuswap Branch.

What are the Odds?

Sunflower’s C______ oincidence Column CHIP’S AHOY

We had only been at the ranch a year when Bob & Kathy dropped by for a visit and before they left we had been hired on to run one of their tug boats from May to September of 1994. We were 6 months away from acquiring any Alpaca and aside from the 50 acres of alfalfa we were growing we had no real reason to pass up an amazing employment opportunity that would allow us to top up our dwindling bank account. Their operation was one of the premier sports fishing experiences on the west coast and included two 85 foot tugs with six crew and fourteen guests living aboard while fishing from smaller boats stowed on deck. We would start our season at Langara Island on the top end of Haida Gwaii for six weeks then move over to the isolated waters north of Prince Rupert for two weeks before heading down to the world famous salmon fishing waters of Rivers Inlet and Hakai Pass for the final two months of our season. The guests would rotate every seven days..... it was a job offer of a life time. Dorothy would be the on board guest services hostess and I would Captain the vessel. Even though I had accumulated considerable experience with a wide variety of boats in the previous 30 years I never had the opportunity to skipper a 100 ton fifty year old tug boat so there was a steep learning curve in front of me. We arrived aboard May 14th and I had the last 2 weeks of the month to learn the ins and outs of this old timer and then we were off to Haida Gwaii by May 28th for opening day June 3rd . This is where the story takes a twist into what could be called a ‘ coincidence ‘ or lucky turn of events. My first few days aboard were spent under the instruction of the owner and I was slowly introduced to the idiosyncrasies of this wonderful old girl called the MV Parry. She was a glorious historical vessel in pristine shape with all of her original running gear and drive systems in place. This meant that the Parry did not start with the help of batteries but started under

submitted by Alan Pineo air pressure. In essence you had to inject air from a storage tank on to the cam shaft with such force it would spin the engine and hopefully start. The wheelhouse was bare bones with only two VHF radios, one radar and one depth sounder along with one lonely throttle combining, gear shift and start lever which controlled everything. No start button or key, no gear shift and no separate throttle. There was just one shiny short piece of metal that ran the whole boat with a full push of the lever forward or backward. You could either start the engine in forward or you could start it in reverse but once that decision was made there was no option to change unless you slowed the boat down to a minimum 50 rpm and then pulled the lever the opposite way to inject air from the opposite side and essentially restart the engine in the opposite direction. There was no neutral unless set up that way while at dockside by hand in the engine room. Before the first week was over I had graduated to driving the tug solo and took a few opportunities to practice my docking and get a feel for the overall handling of such a large and cumbersome vessel. To say the least she was awkward at times to get in and out of tight spots and the number one thing I was taught was to always allow myself an escape route in the event a restart failed. You see, once you get 100 tons moving ahead if you fail in a restart then you are likely to wipe out all that is in front of you. No reverse was available without a restart and if your air ran low unexpectedly you could count on having to use your pre planned escape route to avoid disaster.... which I soon was forced to do. My practice area was in site of our dock space on the Fraser River just west of the Oak St Bridge and it was a very busy part of the river so caution and awareness were the order of the day. I was using an old wharf as my target site and had made two decent landings and was now completing my 3rd attempt. Continued on next page....

What are the Odds?

Continued....

Again I had set up my approach and speed to allow for any unforeseen problems and was alongside the wharf perfectly when it was time to restart in reverse and bring the Parry to a dead stop... but this time things didn’t go as planned... As soon as I pulled the lever back into the reverse position to attempt a restart there was a loud explosion from below and almost instantly I could see large volumes of what appeared to be smoke billowing out of the open engine room door. My first thought was that we had a fire and my second thought was that I was still moving with no means to stop. This is where the training cut in and my pre planning paid off as I was able to steer the tug safely away from the wharf and let her drift out into the river with no damage done to myself or others. Now to deal with what I thought was an engine room fire. There were five of us on board and I knew that someone was probably in the engine room so I hurried out the wheelhouse door and down the steps to see if everyone was alright. The fellow in the engine room soon appeared and informed me it wasn’t a fire but that it was a ruptured high pressure airline, which of course explained the noise and the smoke, which was actually steam, and the reason for my failed restart. Thinking we were safe and letting my heart beat return to normal I took a moment to look around me and gather in our situation. It was then I saw my worst nightmare bearing down on us. Maybe only 150 meters away was a large tug with two loaded wood chip barges in tow and we were right in their path. There was no way on earth the tug could manoeuvre around us or stop and there was no option to move the Parry out of the way. If those barges hit us we would be destroyed and very likely suffer loss of life. I had avoided a mini disaster only minutes before to now find myself in the worst possible predicament of my life.

I could see no quick resolution to the impending collision and was at a loss as to how we were going to avoid being crushed. I headed for the wheelhouse and my radio, quickly relaying a distress call on my VHF with no idea how that was going to help. To my surprise I had an immediate response from a small tug that was miraculously close by and free of tow. To this day I don’t know where he came from and how he got there, but there he was and I will be forever grateful. As soon as I informed him I was dead in the water he set a course for my boat and told me to get down to the bow where he would have a deckhand throw me a line. I was down the stairs and at the bow in record time and within seconds there was a line flying through the air and landing at my feet. I picked it up and quickly made several hitches around my anchor winch then signalled the tug boat to pull her tight and hoped my hastily tied knot would hold. We had one chance and one chance only and time was running out. The tug and barges were now only 50 meters away and I could see the tug boat crew, towing the two chip barges loaded with 1500 short tons of chips each, waving their arms and preparing for a collision. If they stopped they themselves would be crushed by their own tow that had unstoppable momentum and no steerage. It wasn’t going to be a good outcome for either one of us no matter what. The line tightened and we soon began to move as my rescuer from nowhere put his tug full ahead and with maybe 10 seconds to spare we were pulled out of harms way. The tug and barges brushed by with only 50 feet between us and we just stood on the deck in shock over what had just happened and how quickly it went from disaster to rescue….another lucky day, another coincidence…what were the odds?

For the

Love of Books

SHUSWAP EXPERIENCE

by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author & Freelance Journalist As a long-time wordsmith, I was particularly drawn to a notice published in The Chase Sunflower earlier this year, as was my retired teacher husband. Haldane Elementary School was recruiting volunteers for a reading series with students. The One to One Children’s Literacy Programme was founded in 1989 as a collaboration between the Vancouver School Board and the Junior League, a women’s volunteer organization. One to One was introduced to the Okanagan region in 1996, and has subsequently expanded to many other communities in BC and Alberta. To say this innovative take on improving reading skills has been a success is an understatement. It provides a supportive environment which builds students’ selfconfidence and literacy competency, leading to their becoming independent learners and readers. And it’s a triple win: for the children, for their teachers, and for the tutors. Volunteers come from all walks of life, and are not required to have a teaching background. The training provided is basic, informative, effective and includes games that make reading fun—for the student and for the adult. It’s not teaching, just reading. As was imparted to us during

training, initially children learn to read. And then they read to learn. Getting to know the youngsters, who are recommended for the extra help by their teachers, is a special bonus. It’s nothing short of rewarding to have one’s student willingly leave movie-time in the classroom to come to the reading session. And seeing their eagerness and smiles is always gratifying. Haldane’s One to One programme finished up in late April and feedback from the school’s teachers has been very positive. The kids who took part are reading better and exploring the World of Readers with new enthusiasm. One to One coordinators are especially hopeful that a few parents might take part as reading tutors in the future, which can entail as little as an hour or so a week. There’s something special about having parents of school-aged children involved in school based programming. After our last reading session, one of my little readers presented me with a lovely painting she’d done in class. It now adorns my ‘frig as a reminder of our special times together. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge a child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” Must say I agree.

Notes from the Library Come Check It Out: May Submitted by Chase Library Branch

Storytime, 3-5yr olds, every Wednesday, 11.15-11.45am Book club, gr. 6 & 7 (age 11-13), first Wednesday of every month (May 3rd this month), 3-4pm Yarn & Yap, Thursdays, 5-7pm Games & Gab, Saturdays, 10.30-3pm Open 10am-4pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday; 1-7pm Thursday. Welcome! Q&A How can I find the item I’m looking for? Every single item in the library has a number, record, and a place. A few decades ago, information about each item was recorded on index cards and arranged alphabetically by author, title, and subject. The cards were stored in small drawers where library users could search them to discover where an item was located in the library. Today all the information is digitized and accessible using the OPAC, or Online Public Access Catalogue. At Chase Library, the computer directly across from the service counter is for

searching the OPAC. Otherwise, it can be accessed via the library website at www. tnrdlib.ca. Type the title of the item, name of author, or a keyword into the search box for a list of items that may be what you need. Select “Advanced Search” to specify format, location, language, or publication year. Another feature of advanced searching is the option to subject search. The difference? A keyword search for “lily” may result in an item authored by Lily Smith or titled “A Lily for Billy” or anything with the word lily in it, without necessarily being about lilies. A subject search for “lily” will only result in items about lilies. If the item you need is not in our library system, it may be possible to procure it through interlibrary loan, which connects BC libraries, allowing them to share materials. Brown ground meat/turkey & onion; drain. Add taco seasoning and stir in refried beans. Mix soup and sour cream in a separate bowl. Spread 1/2 sour cream mixture in the bottom of a casserole dish. Tear up 3 tortillas and spread over sour cream mixture. Put 1/2 the meat bean mixture over that. Add a layer of cheese. You could put some hot sauce on this now. Repeat the layers. Sprinkle cheese over the top and bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 20-30 minutes.

Cycling Safely in Chase by Joan Anderson, Chase Citizens on Patrol

Chase RCMP members and the volunteers from Chase Citizens on Patrol are spearheading a spring campaign to increase bicycle safety in Chase and the surrounding communities. To kick off the campaign, a series of articles relating to bicycle safety will appear in the Chase Sunflower throughout the month of May. In June, the students, staff and parents of Haldane Elementary School will participate in a school wide bicycle and road

safety education program. On June 9th, the students will have the opportunity to participate in a bike rodeo at the school conducted by local RCMP members with the support of ICBC and the help of school and community volunteers. Watch for more news about this exciting event in the coming weeks. As the warmer weather arrives, many more people will be out riding their bicycles and children will be playing outside

more. Please remember to slow down especially in playground zones and residential areas. Pedestrians, cyclists and drivers all need to keep their attention on their surroundings and “leave the phone alone” while on the road. Let’s all do our parts to make Chase a “Safe Cycling Community” by observing the rules of the road so we can all enjoy a safe, happy summer here in the sunny Shuswap!

Some VERY exciting news. We sent three of our local teams to the Provincial Finals in Vancouver this past weekend, and we are elated to let the Village know that we have a local team moving onto the NATIONAL FINALS in Winnipeg this July! A massive congratulations to Harold Wells, Flo and Norm Flynn, and Dennis and Diane Youchezin. We couldn’t be more proud of all of you. We know that you will represent Village Lanes, Chase, and British Columbia well! We are officially at the end of our Fall League season at Village Lanes, and what a season it was! Kelly and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our league bowlers from

the bottom of our hearts for spending the last 30 weeks with us. It’s the people to commit to joining a full time league, that ensure a bowling centre will be here 10, 15, or even 20 years from now. Thank you. We have started up our Spring Leagues on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and we still have openings available on both nights! If you are interested, p l e a s e contact us and we would be happy to get you all signed up! Fall league bowlers, don’t forget! We have our year end banquet THIS Saturday, April 29th at the Adams Lake Indian Band Gymnasium! See you all there! Cheers to another season in the books!
