n Saturday, April 8th, the Rotary Club of Chase hosted its 13th annual service auction. This year, the theme was Old Hollywood Glamour. The Chase Community Hall was a packed house and everyone dressed in their finest gowns, pin striped suits, tuxedos, etc. enjoyed a great meal from local caterer Cheffrey 911 Catering, took part in a lively auction, raising money for great local causes (Kids Don’t
Float, Chase Skate Park, RCMP Victim Services), and then danced the night away. It was fun evening and fantastic event. The Rotary Club of Chase would like to thank everyone that attended for their participation in the event. We would also like to thank our individual and corporate sponsors for helping to make this evening a success. See page 4 for full list of sponsors.

Kidney Foundation - Chase: Thank You Submitted by Bruce Nelson
The Kidney Foundation of Canada sincerely appreciates the citizens of Chase and area that contributed to the March Kidney campaign. A total of $2802 was raised by the four campaigners involved. Due to the inclement weather and our few canvassers we only were able to cover a couple of streets. Our thanks also go out to both Chase post office and Safety Mart for allowing us to use their premises to campaign. Perhaps more people will come forward to canvas next year. I, personally, gratefully appreciate the
opportunity our local paper has given me to share information about kidney health. I hope that the articles were interesting and useful. Someone who donates a kidney saves the medical system $60,000 a year as that is the amount it cost for one person to be on dialysis annually. 4000 patients in Canada are in need of a transplant, 3/4 of this number is for kidney transplants. Anyone wishing to contribute to the Kidney Foundation of Canada can do so on line at kidney.ca.

LOCAL CHASE CADET COMPETES IN PROVINCIAL MARKSMANSHIP COMPETITION Cadet Warrant Officer Second Class (WO2) Chase Jervis (18) from 204 Black Maria Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Kamloops competed at the Provincial Marksmanship Competition in Vernon at the weekend in the individual category. WO2 Jervis, who lives on a rural property close to Chase and has been a cadet for 6 years qualified along with the rest of the squadron team at the Zone Championships a few weeks ago firing the Daisy Air Rifle. Each corps or squadron may compete with a team and as well as an individual of any level. All cadets are considered for the Top Senior and Top Junior Marksman trophies. As a sport, marksmanship is both physically and mentally taxing and takes a lot of work but it is also fun. “It teaches you how to stay calm, keep a level head and calm down your heart,” Explains Chase. He uses those techniques when working on the family and the neighbours farm
where he tends to livestock and helps with chores. He makes the commute to Kamloops several times a week but feels the program is worth it. “All my friends are in cadets so this is my social life but there are so many things to try…all the cool things you can do!” Safety is very important and Marksmanship in the Cadet Program adheres to safety and training standards set by the Canadian Firearms Centre and activities are continually reviewed to ensure these standards are strictly followed. The Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets are national programs for youth ages 12 to18, which aims to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. The programs are delivered by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces in partnership with the civilian Navy League, Army and Air Cadet Leagues of Canada.

10 Questions with...
This week we’re talking with Michele Lunow of Elite Nail and Colour Studio in Chase BC. Q • Where are you from originally? A • I was born in Ontario but I have lived most of my life in Nanaimo BC on Beautiful Vancouver Island. Q • Can you explain what permanent make up is, and why it’s getting so popular? A • Permanent cosmetic makeup is cosmetic tattooing. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “micro pigment implantation”, “derma graphics” or “Micro-blading”. The cosmetic implantation technique deposits colored pigment (specially formulated for the facial area) into the upper reticular layer of the dermis. (Michele had a lot to say on this topic, see page 11 for the rest of her answer) Q • How did you get into the beauty field? A • I was always interested in the beauty industry from when I was a little girl. I loved doing Makeup, Hair, and Nails, (especially on my dolls and little sister…) At the age of 19 I decided I wanted a career in the beauty Industry. That is what I loved to do. I started my journey with Merle Norman Cosmetics where I was trained and certified in Makeup Artistry. My passion for the beauty Industry kept me thirsty to learn more and more, obtaining certification in many services. I grew my business and before I knew it I had two salons staffing 16 employees. Eventually I down sized and now work by myself. Over thirty years later and I still am learning new things and LOVE what I do. Q • What is the best part of your job? A • When I see a smile on my clients face and a spark in their eye because she feels beautiful, when my clients get a little pep in their step because they have little more self- confidence. Q • What are your hobbies? A • I enjoy gardening, decorating and crafts. I get real enjoyment creating. Q • What do you think about Chase?
A • People in Chase are very friendly, and laid back. They have made me feel so welcomed and have been nothing but warm and kind. I have lived on the Island for most of my life and I have never felt “apart of ” as much as I do here in Chase! I have been a proprietor for over 20 years and I had expected business to be slower for the first year but I am busier than I had ever imagined in such a short period of time. Chase has a strong and committed group of volunteers that are so eager and committed to help and get involved. Q • Seen any good movies lately? A • “Now you see me”. “The Revenant” and “Identity Theft” Q • What are you passionate about? A • I am passionate about learning. I can never learn or know enough. Every day I try to learn something new. One can never know too much. Seriously learning keeps me going and intrigued. I thrive on challenges and learning can challenge you every day. Q • What is your life philosophy in a nut shell? A • The saying I use a lot is “If things don’t change; things don’t change”. Q • Are you a dog person or a cat person? A • I love most animals. I am partial to dogs. I now have my smallest furry baby named Wynston. He is a Chorkie which is (part Chihuahua and Yorkie). He is fearless and thinks he is a Rottweiler. I feel the world would be a better place if people would adopt their loving, nonjudgemental and loyal characteristics. Q • What’s the funnest thing you’ve done recently? A • Went out for dinner to Stratus with a friend. We had great laughs and delicious food!

What are the odds? One... LUCKY DAY ? PART II by Alan Pineo
Where was I ? ...now I remember…we were looking at the possibility of going bottom fishing! Finding ourselves in a spot of trouble my mind went through a few scary scenarios, including the possibility that we might not make it to a safe beach in time and would actually have to ‘abandon ship’. That was going to ruin our day for sure. We were as isolated as possible, facing a building storm and taking on water at a rate that would probably send us to Davy Jones Locker within 30 minutes or so. I knew I had to send out a distress call but also knew that the closest and only Coast Guard base in these waters was located in Tofino, and that was over 100 km southeast of us. Even if they had responded immediately it would take hours to get to our location with the tools needed to save us from sinking. It wouldn’t be in time to save the boat, but at least we would be rescued if we had managed to get ashore. With water pouring in fast and the stern sliding deeper and deeper into the cold blue waters of the Pacific Ocean it was time to make the emergency call and declare a Mayday. I had already made the decision to head for the only place I knew we could beach the boat and easily get ourselves ashore but just before making the turn towards shallower waters I happened to glance wistfully out to sea, hoping for a miracle, and my eye caught what I thought was an object on the horizon. Wondering briefly who or what it might be I put my binoculars on the spot and I couldn’t believe my eyes….was I actually seeing what I was seeing, or was it a mirage? It looked very much like it was a red and yellow coloured vessel, the colours of the Canadian Coast Guard, heading
west about 8 km offshore. There wasn’t a sign of any other craft as far as the naked eye could see, just this one lonely boat, but it was the one boat that could help us save ours. There is over 500 km of ocean along the outer coast of Vancouver Island and usually only one Coast Guard boat patrolling these waters on any given day, if any at all, and yet there it was, within our site and only 15 minutes away. … What were the odds? …. 1 in 1000 ? An anxious call to the Coast Guard on Channel 16 quickly solicited a response and I was excited to confirm they were indeed the vessel I was looking at through my binoculars. I explained my rather dire predicament, emphasizing the urgency of our situation, then relayed the pertinent information on my vessel including our location. The first question out of the Captains mouth after he spotted us through his binoculars was “ what the hell are you doing in there “ and to be honest I was wondering that same thing myself. My first question to him was to ask if they had a portable pump on board, which they did, and then I let them know I needed it as soon as possible. The Captain asked me if I could work my way out of the rock pile I was in and get into deeper waters while he sent over their zodiac with a crew and pump. Confirming we were still mobile, albeit a little crippled, I headed for open waters. Within a short time we could see the small boat working its way towards us and knew our imminent rescue was now close at hand…our day was certainly looking like it was going to improve. You would think that would be enough (good) luck for one day but there was more to come.

Epic Tale of Coincidences
Keeping the water out of our boat was one problem now solved but I also needed to get the boat out of the water. We had to locate a marine way to haul the boat because it was impossible to fix the leak while we were still in the water. The Captain called his home base and had them check to see what might be the closest marine ways that could take our boat. We had a 16 ft beam and that limited us to the larger shipyards but eventually they found one that was about 50 km away and it so happened the single slip they had did not have a vessel in its cradle so they could take us right away. Now we had to get to the shipyard, and with only one power train available it would be a long trip as the seas were building so it would also be a rough trip. We were soon slowly headed west around Solander Island with Quatsino Sound as our destination. Once the crew had he pump running and most of the water drained they left one member on board to man the pump and the others went in to shore to pick up our two bewildered companions who had no idea what was happening on the water offshore. They endured a wild but fun filled twenty minute ride to catch up to us and soon joined us back aboard Ceara II for the anticipated seven hour ride to our repair depot. So…three breaks so far. One was spotting the Coast Guard, two was locating a marine ways on the outside of Vancouver Island that could handle our boat ( that was reachable before dark ) and the third was that the ways were empty. A fourth break was to find out when we arrived at the ways that it was their last month of operation and the shipwright who would do the repairs for us was leaving in two days. You would think that would be enough luck for one day but there was one more ‘lucky’ break to come. By the time we arrived at the ways and hauled the boat it was close to 9 pm and we now had to figure out what we were going to do about food and accommodation.
We were six adults and one small dog now stranded ashore with no possibility of staying on the boat and the nearest sign of civilization was a long dark boat ride away…. if we could arrange one at all. No problem said Dean, the owner of the shipyard. I called over to the resort earlier and they have room for everyone, and dinner will be ready for you when you arrive. Their van will be here any minute to pick you up. Resort, what resort? We were 25 km by water from the nearest village of Port Alice and all we had seen on our way up the long inlet was trees and mountains, except for what we thought was one very nice home we had spotted near the end of our journey. It turned out that nice home was called ‘The Eagle Manor Retreat ‘ ( www.eagleresort. com ) and they now had three rooms available with our names on them. Are you kidding me… what an amazing day this was turning out to be !! We packed a few things from the boat and loaded ourselves into the van for the 5 minute drive to the resort, checked in to our rooms then came down stairs to a fresh salmon dinner waiting to be served. The salmon was compliments of a guest that had been caught that day and after an amazing meal we retired to the fireplace room for some hard earned after dinner drinks and relived the day’s events over and over with the common theme being how good the day turned out verses how bad it might have. The crew from our rescue vessel had joined us, and to say the least… drinks were on us. We spent three nights at the resort while work continued on our boat and on the fourth day we departed for the open Pacific confident in our repairs and anxious to continue our adventure. Our stay at Eagle Manor was wonderful and no one wanted to leave. They only charged us $150 / day per couple, which included 3 delicious meals daily, and that seemed like a bargain even then. When it came time to leave the shipyard the owner just asked for my address and he sent us
on our way saying he would mail me the bill. The west coast tradition of assistance, hospitality and trust was everywhere and we left in high spirits with wonderful memories and a great story to tell our grandchildren one day. Call it luck, call it ‘coincidence’, call it chance… whatever forces were in motion that day they had found a way to turn an impending disaster into an exciting adventure and one we would never forget.

Chase Heat - Okanagan/Shuswap CHAMPS by Scott Koch The “Why not Us!” and “Never Quit” 2016-17 Chase HEAT drove a long way down the KIJHL Playoff Highway. The Playoff Journey began with the team being the Doug Birks Division Regular Season Champions. As a result the HEAT enjoyed two home ice advantage series within the Division. The opening 7 game series involved a 5 game clash versus the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. The home side being a polite bunch they allowed the STOKE squad a win in the first game in Chase before they put together a 4 game win streak. Series Two saw the STORM from Kamloops treated in the very same manner in a 7 game series that went 5 games again. Game 1 in Chase saw the Loops Lads head home with a victory. But once again the HEAT came back and won 4 in a row to claim the Doug Birks Division and a trip to the South Okanagan. Next up, in the Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference Final, the Osoyoos COYOTES who enjoyed home ice advantage in a 5 game series. The Sun Bowl was rocking TAX as 70 plus “Heaters” CHILD made the trek for the two game BENEFIT PROGRAM desert duel. At the end of the pair of 1 goal difference contests the HEAT once again started out politely giving the YOTES two wins. Game 3 at the Art Holding Memorial Arena saw the “Cardiac Kids” get their act together. With 2.7 seconds left in regulation time they tied up the game, then won in overtime!
Game 4 went one step better as the “Never Quit” team scored in regulation time with 3/10’s of a second left and won in overtime! The series is tied at two games apiece and the brass ring is up for grabs in a winner take all Game 5 in Osoyoos. 150 adrenaline junkies make the trek to boisterously cheer on the HEAT, and they make a difference. To a constant drum beat Chase politely gives up the first goal before pounding three past the opposition keeper to claim the OKANAGAN / SHUSWAP CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP! The “Why Not Us!” team celebrates with the fans, and smells some rare air after six years on ice, and it smells fantastic! Now the reward for all that is a date with the KIJHL Regular Season overall Champions, the Beaver Valley N I T E H AW K S . Game 1 in Fruitvale is a lost cause, Game 2 sees a 4-1 first period lead vanish into the atmosphere from which the HEAT don’t recover. The final game of the year, Game 3 at AHMA before a record 519 crazed “Chasers” results in the deserving visitors taking the crown as KIJHL Champions. All in all, 18 games in 35 nights, a hockey marathon, and a season and playoffs that made the Community proud. Thank you players, parents, billet parents, sponsors, donors, volunteers and the fantastic fans! 2017-18 is just around the corner, a new road to travel with YOUR TEAM… the Chase HEAT!

Permanent Makeup; “For a timeless lifestyle that takes no time at all.” Another reason Permanent Make up has become popular is the stigma that was attached to the “Tattoo Parlor”

The Tattoo industry has come a long way by having a good reputable standing with Local, Provincial Health Authorities and Safety Standards. The machines are quieter, lighter and safer than ever. Chase Broncos Wrap up Season by Nancy Hassler
This season your Chase Midget Broncos team set out on a journey to reach the Provincial Championships in March of 2017. The Broncos had a great regular season, finishing 4th overall in the Tier 3 and 4 league within OMAHA. The boys completed the season with 11 wins, 3 losses and 4 ties. The Broncos lost to their longtime rivals, Clearwater in the playoff final. Once playoffs were completed these young men had to regroup and prepare for the week of Provincials in Clearwater. The boys began the toughest week of their season with a 9-4 win over Vanderhoof on Sunday. Monday the Broncos defeated Windermere Valley by a score of 3-2. Tuesday morning the boys handedly beat Fraser Lake 17-5. Later that same day the Broncos lost to Creston Valley by a score of 7-4. On the final day of the tournament Chase needed a tie against Clearwater at the least to progress to the final. The Broncos played their toughest game in a packed arena
and came from behind to solidly defeat Clearwater 8-6. In the Championship game, Chase once again faced the Creston Valley Chiefs. It was an amazing well disciplined, back and forth game. At the end of regulation time it was tied 2-2. The game went into overtime with the Broncos scoring with just 3 minutes remaining! Congratulations Chase Broncos on becoming Provincial Champions! The Chase Broncos wish to thank the coaching staff and manager for the season. The boys also wish to thank all the amazing family and friends and community support they received this year. Without your support the Provincial Championship would not be possible.
