rush Dance has been dancing in BC with all ages since 2016 and opened a studio in Chase in September 2020. It has continued throughout all of the complications of Covid.

We are so excited to finally have our first “regular” dance recital Saturday, April 23 at 1pm at the Chase Community Hall. Doors open at 12:15.

General admission tickets are $5 each and children under 2 are free.

We will also have some

special guests!

Also, Krush Dance will be offering an abbreviated 6-week session from May until June as a fun dance sampler ages 3-adult. Adults, come out and try dance fit. It is a high energy dance workout.

Let’s talk about ticks submitted by Interior Health

Spring is here and the warmer weather means more people will be out hiking in tall grass or wooded areas which can also mean an increased chance of getting tick bites. Ticks are small bugs that bite and feed on the blood of humans and animals and can sometimes transmit disease.

Fortunately, there are precautions people can take to prevent illnesses that may be transmitted from tick bites.

“There are easy things you can do to protect yourself from ticks such as covering up before you head outdoors and checking for ticks when returning from a walk, hike or bike ride,” said Dr. Fatemeh Sabet, Interior Health medical health officer. “Most tick bites do not result in illness; however, any bite from a tick should be cleaned because infection can occur whenever there is a break in the skin.”

Ticks also have toxins that can cause temporary muscle weakness and paralysis if they are attached for several days – especially in children or seniors – but the symptoms fade once the tick is removed from the skin. The signs of many tick-borne infections can be quite similar and include fever, headache, muscle pain and rash.

One of the most important ways to reduce the risk of tick illnesses is to do a skin check on yourself and your children after being outdoors. As well, follow these additional precautions: · Walk on cleared trails when in tall grass or wooded areas. · Wear a hat, long sleeves, pants and light-coloured clothing. · Tuck pant legs into socks or boots.

· Apply insect repellent containing DEET on uncovered skin. · Carefully check clothing and scalp (covered or not) when leaving an area where ticks may live. · Regularly check household pets for ticks.

If you find a tick on yourself, a family member or pet, wear gloves when removing it and be careful not to crush the tick as this could cause it to inject its stomach contents into your skin. Other tips to remove ticks safely include: · Use needle-nose tweezers to gently grasp the tick close to the skin. · Without squeezing, pull the tick straight out. · After removal, clean the area with soap and water. · If you find a tick, check very carefully for others.

You can report a tick and submit a photo to eTick.ca to have it

identified.

Most individuals with acute Lyme disease do not notice the biting tick that precedes the illness. If you have concerns or need assistance removing a tick, please contact your family doctor or visit a walkin medical clinic.

Village of Chase

Council Meeting of April 12, 2022 - Highlights Submitted by Village of Chase Council’s Regular meeting of April 12, 2022 was held at the Community Hall and via Zoom.

All members of Council and the management team were present.

Four people attended in person.

Mayor Crow called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

Minutes from Council meetings held on March 21, 22, and 29, 2022 were adopted as presented.

Council heard from Dave Underwood from TRUE Consulting, who presented a report and mapping demonstration on the Chase Creek Flood Plain.

Reports were heard from the Mayor and Council, who have been very busy attending meetings within the Village and throughout the TNRD. A Development variance permit was issued subject to

registration of a statutory rightof-way for public access between MacPherson Street and Hillside Avenue and registration of a covenant to save harmless the Village of Chase in the event of overland storm flooding from public property onto the subject property.

Council adopted revisions to Policy ADM-31, Grant-In-Aid. Council granted an additional $1460 to the Chase and Area Young Learners Society to enable them to deliver an Out of Smoke program for school aged children in 2022.

A Notice of Motion was made

by Councillor Maki to apply for the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI BC) Grant Opportunity of up to $15,000 for the development of a downtown improvement plan.

The Village of Chase CAO provided the 2021/2022 Strategic Plan – Second Quarter Report, which was received as information.

The End of an Era: Saying Goodbye to ‘Playgroup’ Editorial submitted by Nakia Hill

When my family moved to Chase in 2015, we knew no one.

With the two oldest at school and a three-year old at home, I had to find things for us to do, places to go. We spent a lot of time at the library. I met a mom there who told us about “Playgroup”. Being an anxious person, I was apprehensive to go. Any mom will tell you it is not an easy task to make friends as an adult, to come out of your shell and be a bit vulnerable, to walk into a room where you know no one with your unpredictable babies in tow.

When I finally mustered the courage that Friday morning to go to playgroup, it completely and absolutely changed my life.

Hazel Slape lived in Chase for 19 years. She has facilitated our beloved Playgroup since

the very beginning, 25 years ago. The Healthy Beginnings program (over the years we have affectionately renamed it “Playgroup”) runs under the Community Action Plan for Children (CAPC). Interior Community Services (ICS) is a non-profit organization that negotiates government funding for such groups. Playgroup has been funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada since its inception. The core mission of CAPC is to improve healthy child development by improving parenting skills and parent-child relationships, decreasing social isolation, increasing children’s selfesteem and providing childfocused activities.

Description of Activity Ongoing drainage and earthworks. Expect Random Minor Stoppages Chase Creek Road will detour though the site to a new highway intersection at Harper Lake Road.

Ongoing earthworks and commencement of blasting will commence mid-April. Blasts tentatively to take place between 1300h – 1500h daily. Expect closures of up to 20 mins in both directions along Hwy 1. Shuswap Ave. East and West are expected to remain open for local traffic during blasting closures.

Coburn Street at Hwy 1 will open mid-April. Utility installation work will continue on Paquette Rd. and Cedar Ave. in the Village of Chase. Access to residences and facilities on Paquette Rd. and Cedar Ave. will be maintained for the duration of this closure. Pedestrians should use alternate methods of reaching Scatchard Trailhead during this closure.

Playgroup

It also works to promote and create partnerships within the community by actively involving the people they serve in the planning, managing, developing, delivering and evaluation of their programs, to strengthen community capacity and to support vulnerable children and their families. Playgroup was founded on these ideals. It became that and so much more to countless individuals and families.

I know that I do not just speak for myself when I say this: Playgroup became a highlight of my week. We always looked forward to Friday morning, 10-12 in the church basement.

Walking in we immediately felt at home and welcome. It was a safe, joyous, fun place - not just for the kids, but the moms/ caregivers as well - and that had everything to do with Hazel.

When she opened that door with a big smile on her face and said “Well hello!”, you knew she was genuinely happy to see you.

Hazel and Playgroup were a haven. Countless friendships and life-long bonds have been built because of Playgroup, many that would have otherwise not had happened if it weren’t for this invaluable community service.

When Playgroup began, the intention was to get the program on its feet and within 2-3 years have the hosting community take over its funding and operations. However with its great success it continued to be funded for the next 25 years by Public Health of Canada. With the recent and intense changes in our world and economy, many programs have ended up under the government microscope and our Playgroup was one of them. While Playgroup has continued to operate on the same small budget as it has since 1997, it was decided that

the Playgroup’s were no longer a viable service. Despite the fact they operated on a very minimal budget and provided a truly invaluable service to so many in the community, Playgroup was cast aside. There will be a detrimental void within this community without Playgroup.

Hazel did have plans to retire in the near future and the thought of saying goodbye to her was hard enough - but now that Playgroup has officially begun and will end with her is to say the least, devastating. With the rapid influx of young families moving into our village and the surrounding communities, Playgroup is a vital service and it is deeply saddening to know that so many will never get to experience it. Yet this is where we are…

We have two Playgroups left, April 22nd & April 29th. I would encourage any and all current and past participants to come: If you came with your children or grandchildren during the last 25 years, grandparents, aunts, caregivers or guardians who have visited at any time, if your kids are grown or in school full time… come for a visit, come say farewell and get one of those great Hazel hugs.

If you’re new to the area come for the last 2 groups. I’m certain you’ll quickly make some new friends and you’ll feel the love and warmth and acceptance that Hazel has instilled in all of us through Playgroup over the years. And while this may be the end of an era, it doesn’t really have to end here, does it? Perhaps we can find a way to keep Playgroup, through the community, through our village… In the meantime, we will carry on and pay forward all Hazel has given to us, shown us and taught us over these 25 years. Hope we see you ALL April 22nd and April 29th. As always, ALL are welcome.

Employment Opportunity Temporary Labourer - Public Works A temporary employment opportunity exists in Public Works for a Labourer for approximately 5 months through the summer.

The temporary labourer will report to and work directly under the guidance of the current Team Lead Hand. The temporary labourer is responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and routine semi-skilled manual construction and maintenance tasks that involve considerable physical effort and agility.

Main duties include: • The performance of a variety of labour-intensive work including heavy outdoor manual tasks • Cleaning of culverts and drainage ditches as required • The performance of routine repairs and maintenance to street pavement, boulevards, street signs • Operates small machinery on sidewalks • Uses hand tools for routine repairs and maintenance and changing of equipment attachments • Directs traffic, places barricades and warning lights around work projects • Assists with grave digging, installation of headstones, trench digging, backfilling • Cleans up after construction projects or around buildings, easements, clearing and sorting salvage material as required Education/Experience/Qualifications • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract (air brake endorsement considered an asset) • Three years’ experience with sound knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment, practices and standards of public works • Confident with sound judgement • Ability to maintain records, make written and oral reports to co-workers and supervisor • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with the public and elected officials • Maintains an excellent quality of service and high degree of accuracy in work The complete job description is available upon request from the Director of Corporate Operations.

The wage for this position is $26.53 per hour.

This CUPE position is temporary, full-time hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., days of week will vary and will include weekend work.

Annual Fire Fighters Car Wash

Wildfire season is just around the corner. To help ensure people's safety, the Chase Fire Fighters Association will be holding our annual car wash and BBQ at Safety Mart on May 28th from 11AM - 3PM. Money raised will go towards making the finishing touches to our Structural Protection Unit.

A trailer stored with sprinklers and other equipment that can be set up on and around a structure, to help protect them from possible wildfire embers. A highly effective way in reducing wildfire threats to most buildings.

The Chase Fire and Rescue Department would like to thank Aylmer Road Storage for their huge generosity. We have recently needed to have work completed at the fire hall, with the help of Aylmer Road Storage, we now have a place to dry our fire hoses.

This new hose drying platform will not only allow for quicker fire hose decontamination and cleaning, but help to ensure firefighter safety with not having our fire hoses dry on our bay floors.
