Community Events Bulletin Regrettably, the Chase Lions Club can not host the 400 Club Social on April 24th as planned. At this time we will simply postpone it to the fall and hope that the Public Health Orders will be lifted by then and we will be again able to have a party. submitted by Breanne Malo, Chase & District Museum & Archives Society Do you have photographs that were taken in Chase or the nearby area? Are they photographs of people that lived here? Do they have buildings that no longer exist? The Chase & District Museum & Archives is always interested in new artifacts and donations but photographs are especially valuable given that they capture moments in history. Professional or not, photographs tell stories. With enough photographs, the museum can tell countless stories of the people who lived here, the businesses they had, the transportation they used, the events they held, the sports they played, and more. If you have photographs that you think the museum might be interested in please send an email, phone 250-679-8847, or drop by the museum during open hours. You do not have to give the museum the original photograph if you do not want to. Breanne has the ability to make a high
quality copy for the museum to keep while the donor retains the original. The museum will gladly look at photographs of any subject matter however, at this time the museum is particularly interested in military related photographs. There are thirteen names on the World War I memorial in the Chase Cemetery of those soldiers who gave their lives during the war. D. Haldane, W. Haldane, H. A. Thompson, H. Chase, E. Stromberg, C. Thompson, C. S. Staples, E. Buysse, G. W. Hoffman, A. B. Hoffman, W. R. Hodgan, R. Stahilker, and N. De Leenheer. At the moment, the museum only has photographs of perhaps four of these men. Other military photographs are of interest too. The museum mainly focuses on those who were living in this area at the time of enlistment.

6-8 cloves garlic very finely sliced 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 ½ teaspoons garlic minced 4 tablespoons butter 1 ½ cups white rice medium or long grain is best (raw) 2 ½ cups chicken broth ¼-½ cup scallions finely sliced salt white pepper Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic slices and saute, moving constantly, until golden and crisp. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Pour out excess oil then return to the stove. Add 2 tablespoons butter. Once melted, add garlic. Cook for 1 ½ minutes or until the garlic starts to turn light golden and the butter is well infused with garlic flavour. Add rice, stir to coat in garlic butter. Add broth, place lid on saucepan. Bring to simmer then immediately turn down to medium low. Cook for 12 – 15 minutes or until liquid is all absorbed by the rice. Tilt saucepan to check. Remove from stove but leave lid on. Rest for 10 minutes. Fluff with fork, transfer into serving bowl. Stir through remaining butter and scallions, or garnish as per photos. Sprinkle with crispy garlic, salt, and pepper. Serve.

Chase & Area Young Learners– The “Kids First” Initiative by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist, & Freelance Writer
A local grass-roots, non-profit organization, the Chase & Area Young Learners Society (YLS), is providing imaginative outdoor activities and education for children aged four to twelve years of age. YLS understands that not all kids absorb or achieve the same way, that physical activity leads to productive learning, and that outdoor education opportunities produce positive results. With the encouragement of area teachers, Executive Director Ashton Sweetnam, along with the Society’s Board of Directors, Ian Hart, Sue Cairnie, Paul Matheson, Roy Hegelstad and Jennifer Fryatt, have developed a creative nature programme that is child-led and involves literacy, art, and science, as well as play and exploration. “Connecting with the place where they live is an important part of every session,” says Sweetnam. “Once each week the children enjoy a full day of nature immersion.” “With regard to school-age kids, their teachers recognize the need for a day off from desks and chalkboards for some children and readily see the improvements in students’ attentiveness and school work.” Another positive plus inherent in the Young Learners programming is that it provides relief for kids from the pandemic restrictions that have necessarily been imposed over the last year. For the last two years (year-round), children from numerous families enjoy a weekly trip to a riverside natural area where they run and play under the watchful eyes of adult volunteers from Sponsored by Todd
9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.—and learn in a new way. “Physical ‘literacy’ is as important as other forms of literacy,” says Sweetnam. “Our Evergreens Club and the EverWild Explorers group have been very successful.” “YLS adult volunteers simply take on mentorship roles to assist the children in fulfilling their own learning outcomes,” she adds. This keen outdoor coach (and mother) describes a typical Young Learners day as starting with morning play, and then a morning project, snacktime with some book reading, aftersnack play, and a project before lunch, during which they’ll read another book and discuss its topic. An after-lunch project is followed by more free play. “We recently learned about snails— kids love slimy things,” reports Sweetnam, “and previously we studied bird nests, and the children made their own nests. Many of our projects involve art spin-offs as well.” During all this activity and learning, one important aspect of the programme is the socials skill set that the kids develop. With very little adult intervention, the
children learn how to negotiate, to figure things out, to get along. Indicating their boundaries and expressing feelings are constructive lifelong abilities. “They know they’ll be with the same group every week,” says Sweetnam “and so they discover how to deal with an upset or an issue, to problem solve. We adults are always a resource, in order that everyone feel safe, but we let the children come up with solutions as much as possible. And they get really good at it!” In addition to all the foregoing, the children bring and carry belongings, extra clothing, their gear, and their lunch. They’re learning to be responsible in many ways. W i t h mountain run-off soon to commence, YLS is seeking an alternate local outdoor venue with some interesting features for its nature education group during the four to six weeks of spring high-water season. Note: the society carries comprehensive liability insurance. The Chase initiative follows the guidelines of The Child & Nature Alliance of Canada, which provides training and programming for forest schools that are springing up everywhere in BC. Championing Chase
The Young Learners Society plans to offer an iRide mountain bike skills and safety course for children aged six to twelve from May 3rd to June 14th, Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, as an afterschool programme. A $17.50 iRide membership will be the only fee for the programme. Anyone interested in assisting with this activity can contact chaseyounglearners@gmail. com or call 250.319.8468. For those who may be experiencing difficulty registering online, paper registration can be arranged though the above contacts. YLS hopes to introduce additional bike, scooter or skateboard lessons as well, in the future. Sweetnam advises that several children’s mountain bikes have been donated to the Society by local citizens, for families financially impacted by the pandemic, to be loaned to kids without bikes, for use during the programme. Enquires about this can be made through the foregoing contact information.
And Paul Matheson of Sunflower Bicycle Repair has offered to provide basic tune-ups for these donated bicycles, to ensure they’re roadworthy and safe. In addition to low-cost cycling machines, the shop also carries a line of reasonably priced children’s helmets. Such support is a clear indication that there is community interest in the Society’s efforts and the clear benefits of the outdoors for children. It is said that the most important things to provide for children are “roots and wings.” Congratulations to the Young Learners Society on their visionary “wings” projects! Footnote: Be sure to visit the spring sidewalk plant sale to be held by the Young Learners Society, Friday to Sunday, April 30 to May 2, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm at the former TRU Hardware store – flowers sure to brighten your garden and for a very good cause.

Lions Community Calender
RCMP REPORT- April 2021
submitted by Chase Lions Club
The Chase Lions Club has been distributing the Chase Lions Community Birthday Calendars since 1969. That’s 52 years of serving this community and surrounding area. In Late December after we had collected all the calendar orders, we received an email from our publisher stating that they were closing their doors due to bankruptcy from COVID. We were devastated. We did not want to give up and stop making our beloved birthday calendars. We immediately contacted our local Patricia Ross of PRA Printing whom has been an advertiser of ours for years and asked if she could replicate the Linmark Calendars. She immediately stepped up to the challenge. It is a big job to enter and recreate all the birthdays,
submitted by Chase RCMP
anniversaries, advertising etc all new, as we had no digital files. She has been working tirelessly on our calendars and they will be ready for distribution this coming week. We are so happy that PRA Printing is now printing them right here in Chase. Locals, supporting locals. The calendars will be distributed for pickup on Mon April 25, Tues April 26, and Wednesday April 27 at 564 Lakeshore Drive between 9am and 1pm. If you have preordered please come and pick up your calendars. We did order extra, if you did not pre order. Please practice social distancing during pickup. The Chase Lions Club thanks you for your continued support.
Stolen Truck On April 2nd, 2021 at 7:08 am, Chase RCMP were advised that a vehicle had just been stolen from a business in Scotch Creek. The complainant happened to look out his window as the stolen vehicle was leaving the property. He immediately ran outside and attempted to prevent the theft. His efforts, while admirable, were ultimately unsuccessful and generally not advisable. The suspects—two males—appeared to have arrived in a white sedan. The stolen vehicle was a dark coloured Ford F150 pickup with a smashed back window. This vehicle is still outstanding. Interestingly, this is the second time this vehicle has been stolen.

Impaired Driver On April 2nd, 2021 at approximately 6:44 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a suspected impaired driver on the Trans Canada Highway, near Lee Creek. The complainant reported that a black GMC Yukon hit the ditch and then continued on to a nearby residence. Members of the Central Interior Highway Patrol Unit were in the area and quickly located the vehicle and driver. Based on the information gathered, an impaired investigation was initiated,. Samples of the driver’s breath resulted in ‘Fail’ readings which meant that his ability to drive was impaired by alcohol (as evidenced by his inability to keep his vehicle out of the ditch). The driver was issued an immediate 90 day prohibition from driving and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Upon his release from police custody, the driver told his girlfriend that he was going to jump in front of a transport truck. The girlfriend took this comment seriously and reported it to police, who were still on scene overseeing the tow. Police apprehended the driver under the Mental Health Act; he was then transported to hospital in Kamloops where he was assessed by a Doctor and released into the care of his wife. Machete Attack On April 4th, 2021 at 5:54 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a weapon complaint on Little Shuswap Lake Road. The complainant reported that his neighbour took a swipe at him with a machete. Police responded immediately. Upon arriving at the scene, it was determined that the machete had actually made contact with the victim’s leg. By sheer good fortune, the machete struck the cell phone in the victim’s pocket – although the
cell phone was damaged, his leg was not. The suspect was thought to be in his apartment nearby and Police prepared to conduct a high-risk arrest. Police located the suspect, in bed, asleep. The suspect, a 25 year old male, was cooperative with police and taken into custody without further incident. Alcohol was considered to be a factor. Slashed Tires On April 6th, 2021 at 2:34 pm, Chase RCMP received a mischief report from a commercial business in the Adams Lake area. The complainant advised that there was a male in the parking lot, slashing the tires of a car. Police attended but all parties were gone when Police arrived. Witnesses identified two suspects and a victim. The victim, who has outstanding warrants, has not been cooperative with Police. The matter is still under investigation. Suspicious Vehicle On April 8th, 2021 at 8:36 am, Chase RCMP were advised that a male was passed out in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle on Loakin Bear Creek Road. Police attended and found the male still sleeping in the vehicle. The initial investigation determined that the vehicle’s license plate had been stolen from Kamloops and a stolen vehicle from Chase. The male was arrested for possession of stolen property. A rifle was found inside the vehicle. The male tried to give police a fake name. When his real identify was determined, it was found that he had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest, and was not in compliance with his current release conditions. He will also be facing charges of obstruction for providing a fake name to Police. Covid Concerns On April 10th, 2021 at 5:37 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to investigate a Covid-related concern at a residence in Anglemont. The complainant reported that there appeared to be a large gathering at the home. He said there were at least 7 vehicles parked on the property and the vehicles had license plates from Alberta and BC. Police attended and spoke with the home-owner. He told Police that his family recently moved from Alberta, which was why some vehicles still had Alberta license plates. He further explained that he lives with his wife and three adult children and they each have their own vehicles. In fact, he said many of them have
multiple vehicles. He was reminded of the current Covid related regulatory protocols in BC and the associated fines. Impounded Motorcycle On March 31st, 2021 Chase RCMP towed and impounded a black “crotch-rocket” style motorcycle, after receiving numerous complaints that the vehicle had been “ripping around town” at a high rate of speed (and with a great deal of noise). Witnesses provided statements and photos that allowed police to conclusively identify the motorcycle and driver. Further investigation determined that the motorcycle was not properly licensed or insured and the driver was prohibited from driving. The driver was issued with several Violation Tickets and will be facing charges under the Motor Vehicle Act, in court. Theft of Equipment On April 12th, 2021, Chase RCMP were advised of the theft of equipment from a fenced works yard in Lee Creek. The suspects appeared to have made entry into the compound, by removing a section of fencing. Stolen from the property: Bobcat model T190 and a red Honda ‘Splitfire’ wood splitter. Travelling Fight On April 12th, 2021 at approximately noon, Chase RCMP were advised that a male and female were hitting each other on the side of Trans Canada Highway in the Monte Creek area. The couple were associated to a black Ford Focus. While police were responding to this matter, Chase RCMP received a report from another person that a female driver was beating on a male passenger in a vehicle on Shuswap Avenue in Chase. The vehicle matched the description provided by the first complainant. The vehicle was gone when Police arrived, but the couple was eventually located just outside of Chase. Neither party were cooperative with Police. The investigation determined that the female was the primary aggressor, and she was accordingly arrested for assault. Stolen Vehicle On April 18th, 2021 at 10:18 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a stolen vehicle. The complainant reported that during the night, someone stole a black GMC Yukon from a residence in Adams Lake. Unfortunately, the vehicle was left unlocked, with a spare key in the console making it somewhat of an easy target. The vehicle is still outstanding.
