Earth Day

We are hoping that all Chase residents will abide by the guidelines and thereby greatly reduce the use of pesticides in our area. Several members of the Thompson Shuswap Master Gardeners organization were also in attendance helping people with their gardening questions, and showing them some of the other native pollinators in our region. They provided tips on how to deal with various plants that are generally considered weeds. Miranda Dick, local Secwepemc matriarch, s p o k e eloquently on some of the recent and ongoing efforts to protect land and water in our area. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between Indigenous and

settler people, as well as teaching the children. CEAG members welcomed people of all ages at their table, which featured a draw for a basket containing a copy of Elaine’s book, a jar of local honey, seeds, and locally made bee balm. This was won by Cindy Winiewski. There were also Pesticide-Free signs bearing the messages “Don’t Ruin My Buzz!”, “Biodiversity Zone”, and “Pardon the Weeds,” as well as postcards, bookmarks, and photos c r e a t e d by CEAG members. These will be available at other CEAG events or from members, as well as at the Chase Farm and Craft Market when it opens in May.

Society Offering Special Interest Camps for Summer

Chase and Area Young Learners Society 2nd Annual

submitted by Ashton Sweetnam, CAYLS

We at the Chase and Area Young Learners Society are excited to announce three new summer camps that will be launching this summer! The goal of these camps is to give children in our small community opportunities that are otherwise difficult to access without travelling. We identified that Chase has multiple sports opportunities available for kids thanks to a group of dedicated and hardworking volunteers. The gap that we recognized is in local opportunities in the areas of arts, culture, and STEM. We responded by creating this series of high quality, interest related camps with assistance from the Village of Chase, The Chase and District Lions Club, and the Chase Literacy Program. Theatre Camp will be from July 11-15 and kids can look forward to fun theatre games and activities in addition to writing and performing their own play! The kids will visit the set of the Project X theatre in Kamloops for a backstage tour and meet and learn from real performers after watching a show. Science and Adventure Camp, from July 18-22, will include a morning of outdoor adventure with biologist Christy Wright. Kids will explore the local ecosystems with a scientific lens to learn about the relationships between living creatures and the environment. Afternoons will feature workshops

through the Big Little Science Centre including a fluids lab and a physical/ chemical reactions lab. The week will wrap up with a presentation from the Kamloops Wildlife Park that includes an animal encounter with three different creatures. The goal of the Art Camp from August 22-26 is to present a one-ofa-kind experience for kids who have a particular interest in art and would like a chance to deeply explore that interest. The camp will include a combination of mixed media art instruction, activities, and games, with a community building project of co-creating a public art installation. We will be working with artist Joey Nash to conceptualize and manage a mural project along with other enthusiastic supporters. Each camp is for children aged 6-12 and costs $165 for the whole week. Full or partial bursaries are available to families who would not otherwise be able to access the camps. For further information find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook. com/Chaseyounglearners or email chaseyounglearners@gmail.com.
