The scientists have collected all the data and they’ve explained what will happen if change doesn’t happen soon. It’s now up to us to demand change from our politicians. David Suzuki stated, “The UN’s Intergover nment a l Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recent report, entitled Global Warming of 1.5°C, indicates that it is possible to stabilize the climate provided we act within the next decade to be globally carbon neutral by 2050. Indeed, having already warmed by 1°C already - since pre-industrial times - we are already seeing the impacts, especially in Canada,” and around the world. David Suzuki also stated, that it was time for our youth to take a stand, like that of Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old teenager from Sweden, who is leading students around the world to participate in revolving strikes at school every Friday, demanding the right to a clean and healthy environment. Lent not lint by Tyler Harper
Spring is here, the snow is gone, the days are longer, and the Christian Church is in the midst of lent. While lent might sound like the fuzz we find in our pockets or on our sweaters, it is anything but a fluffy byproduct. Most of us look at our calendars and see Ash Wednesday and we don’t really know what this is. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is the time when Christians prepare for the important days of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Lent is the time when those in the Church go without, when followers of Jesus fast from something, from rich foods (red meat, chocolate, coffee), media (T.V., video games, social media), comforts (shopping, sports), or conveniences (giving up driving when possible, taking stairs instead of elevators) to relive a microcosm of what Jesus experienced. Lent is looking back, but it is also looking forward. Lent is fasting to prepare for a feast. Easter— the day Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead— is one of the two biggest holidays for followers of Jesus. Easter is one of the two most significant feast days in the Christian year. But it is hard to feast without a fast. There are many in our world, in our country, and in our region who struggle to
secure healthy food, but rich, decadent food is now at arm’s reach for almost everyone. And worst of all this food is cheap. Walk into any gas station or grocery store and there are rich chocolate bars and salt laden snack foods at your fingertips. Foods that in the past were a rarity are now plentiful, maybe too plentiful. We are always eating. Food is everywhere. As professor Mark Buchanan reflects in his book The Rest of God, we are “always eating, never feasting.”, yet we never seem to be satisfied. Lent is living out the understanding that to be truly satisfied means sacrifice. Because of the business of life, it is easy to let the things we want distract us from the things we need. Lent isn’t about making us better, it’s about realizing what we already have. Lent is about putting down those things that distract us from our true needs. Lent is about giving up good things so that the feast is even greater. Lent is a reminder that there is more to life than fluff- that there is a feast coming. It is my hope that we all put down our lint, our distractions, to realize what really matters. Tyler is the Pastor at the Chase Evangelical Free Church. He can be emaild at tyler@chasechurch.com

Obituary Shirley McMillan 1945 – 2019
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Shirley Helen McMillan (Blanc) on March 22, 2019. Shirley was born on September 6, 1945 in Royal Inland Hospital. Her childhood was spent on her parents’ ranch in Turtle Valley. She attended Turtle Valley’s one room school until grade 7, after which she transferred to Chase Secondary School. Upon graduation, Shirley enrolled in the Nursing Program at R.I.H. in Kamloops and went on to an illustrious career in nursing at R.I.H. She moved into a supervisory position in 1972 and then became Associate Director of Nursing in 1972. After her retirement in 1996, she and Peter moved permanently to their acreage in Turtle Valley and soon became Snow Birds, dividing their time between the Valley and Yuma, Arizona. Shirley was predeceased by her grandparents Cecil and Mandy Coburn, her parents, Charlie and Zita Blanc, and her younger brother, Joe Blanc. She leaves to mourn her loss, her beloved husband of 52 years, Peter McMillan, her older brother, Louis Blanc, numerous nieces and nephews and their children and a host of truly wonderful friends and family who walked with Shirley throughout her harrowing struggle, a struggle she undertook with amazing courage and grace. Godspeed Shirley and “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”. A memorial service for Shirley will be held in Turtle Valley when the weather warms. Shirl’s family extend their gratitude to Dr. Carmichael and the staff at Bastion for their sensitive and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, Shirley and her family would appreciate your support of the Canadian Cancer Foundation. Obituary Robert John (Bob) Carlin
December 2, 1928 – March 26, 2019 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father. He was a kind, gentle man and was loved and respected by so many. Dad was predeceased by his wife Alice, parents Claude and Yvonne, sisters Lorraine and Louise, brother George and stepson David. Left to cherish his memory are children Margaret (Don), Barb (Jerry), Debbie (Randy), Leona (Karl), Ken (Michelle), Shirley (Richard) and Joanne (Joe), 23 grandchildren, 24 greatgrandchildren and ex-wife Betty (Cliff). Also stepchildren Lyle (Brenda), Ted (Colleen), Danny (Sandra), 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Dad was born in Chase and was proud to call it home for 90 years. His sharp mind made him a wonderful resource for anyone seeking information on the area and many of those who lived there. He spent his earlier years farming, running his trucking/backhoe business, and working for the department of highways. After retiring Dad and Alice took up woodworking, which they both loved. Our family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to Dr. Bernard, the Nurses on 5 South and Doctors Rollheiser and Montgomery for the great compassion they showed Dad and ourselves as we went through this difficult time. A Celebration of Dad’s Life will be held May 11, 2019 at 11:00am in the Chase Community Hall. Dad will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Online condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com.
