Fish and Game Club News

with

by Helen Dalin, secretary CDFGC

Well Chase and District Fish and Game has exciting news this month. The club has been donated some framed numbered wildlife prints and a reproduction painting that we will be raffling off for fundraising. The prints will be going on display in the old True Value window on Shuswap Ave, Chase on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022. There will be a biography of all the artists to read. We are hoping the community will get behind this fundraising activity and buy some raffle tickets to support our club. We are trying to recoup lost banquet monies. The tickets are only $2 each! So, you can win a beautiful piece of art for only $2! How awesome is that? Tickets are going on sale April 4th, 2022, and the final draw is taking place May 31st, 2022 at 1 pm live on our Facebook feed. Please support our club by buying some tickets. For more information or to buy tickets you can contact Helen Dalin at 250-6798019 of Vickey Bischoff at 250 – 955-2374 or any other executive. More news is that our club is going to have it’s first 3-D shoot in 3 years. We are very excited about this and so are all the archers in the province! We get archers attending from many clubs in BC. They love our venue and the fact they can camp at the CDFGC range. Our 3-D shoot will be held on the May 14th/15th weekend at 724 Turtle valley Road. There is free dry camping at the range that weekend and there will be a BBQ pork loin and potluck supper on the Saturday

evening. Mark it on your calendar if you are interested participating. There is no reason you must shoot for prizes. You can register to shoot just for fun. There are many categories and types of bow classes. Watch for our posters and advertising for this event coming out soon. Lastly, National Volunteer Week is coming up. CDFGC is a club that would not be able to survive and flourish without its volunteers. There are many different types of volunteers needed to keep our club going. There are the people that step up to be Executive and who diligently attend the monthly meetings and organize activities for the membership. There are the ones who are willing to organize the membership paperwork and the fundraising. Then there are those member volunteers that will come out and help with the work bees which involve physical labour, like lawnmowing, weed eating, painting, scrubbing, general clean up. Then we have members that will donate large expensive equipment and time for the big earth moving jobs that are required. There are the cooks who will come out and run concession and BBQ the pork loins! Also, we have the volunteers who have special skills who run our monthly Trap and Skeet shoots and Pistol Practices. Or the carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and small motor repair members who build, or repair our infrastructure for free. Then, there are those special volunteers that you see at everyone of these volunteer activities! Every club has some of them. Continued on page 5...

CDFGC Update

One area we are still looking for a volunteer is for a monthly archery practice. We need some people to step forward 1 day a month and volunteer their time to oversee a safe and instructive archery practice. If you have a passion for archery and knowledge you can share, there are a lot of members who would really appreciate you sharing that. You would not have to work alone, the CDFGC club will support you with help and equipment. Events to remember is that

the CDFGC holds Trap and Skeet Practice at 10 am the second Sunday of the month and Pistol Practice is 10am the 3rd Saturday of the month. Guests are welcome, cost is $5 per guest. Our next general meeting is Monday, April 11th at 7 pm at Creekside Senior Center on Shuswap Ave, Chase. It will not be on Easter Monday, April 18th. All members are welcome. You can get a membership online at cdfgc.ca or at the village U-Brew in Chase.

EDITORIAL

In-Council with Nature Submitted by Lois Rexin-Hunter, Chase Environmental Action Group (CEAG)

Ahhh…Spring! Melting snow, rushing rivers, warm days, gentle evenings, songbirds, new life bursting forth - eliciting in many of us an awakening of renewed anticipation and hope. It is a time when many of us will feel a heightened sense and appreciation of our connection with Mother Earth. Mother Earth. She sustains and nurtures us, provides for us. She is manna – nourishment for our bodies, our spirit, our soul. She is beauty. She is our first teacher and, to those who will listen – imparts upon us the true expression of balance and harmony. She is both the mirror and the medium. Upon her, all of creation is reflected – how we conduct ourselves through our doings and undoing’s and the consequences that subsequently emerge, are channelled and absorbed directly through her. She is our very foundation, providing the footing for all living things to take seed, grow, prosper and relate with one-another in the sharing of our practices, our culture, our knowledge and our wisdom. And, with particular attention to the calamitous spectre of climate change…… she is also fragile. More than any other time in recent history, she needs us to take immediate action and respond to her urgent call to become responsible and ethical stewards of this “small blue dot” that we call home. How can we do that? Well, if we listen to the voices and recognize the land-based teachings of our Indigenous peoples’, we can treat Mother Earth with respect, reverence, humility, and reciprocity. And, in order to conduct ourselves with respect, reverence and humility we are first asked to carefully consider (reconsider) our relationship with everything around us. Do we continue to practise the Eurowestern worldview that our land and water are commodities; a provision for us to use at our pleasure, to exploit for our exclusive benefit and capitalistic gains? Do we see ourselves - as the human occupants of this planet - in hierarchical terms, existing at the privileged top of the food chain and therefore everything below lives in relation to us? Do we regard ourselves as being somehow separate from our surroundings – viewing our surroundings as inanimate

objects – as things? Or do we instead endeavour to align ourselves more closely with the land-based views of our Indigenous Peoples – that “everything is related” – ALL of creation? That the entire ecosystem is animate, meaning that rather than being regarded as an object to be exploited, it is a being, our home, something to revere, nurture and safeguard. If we adopt the latter approach, then we acknowledge that we exist and are part of a complex network of relatedness. We are an intrinsic part of, and in-Council with - Nature. In the words of the esteemed Indigenous author Robin Wall Kimmerer (“Braiding Sweetgrass”): “…..the earth and the natural world it supports are all animate beings. As such, they deserve our care and respect. They are models of generosity. They are our teachers.” And finally – Reciprocity. Take no more than you need, share everything that you take, use everything that you take, practice gratitude, and minimize harm in the way in which you take it. By committing to the act of reciprocity, you are interacting with your environment in an ethical, emotional, and spiritual manner. You come to the honourable harvest (an ancient Indigenous term that implies that a covenant of reciprocity exists between humans and the land) showing respect, reverence, and humility. This Earth Day, let us all take a moment to carefully consider our relationship with Mother Earth and to examine ways in which we can perhaps become more actively involved as responsible, respectful, humble, and caring stewards of our planet. On Friday, April 22, please join us any time between 11 and 3 in the downtown Chase Pocket Park to learn how to promote pollinators from Elaine Sedgman and other members of the Shuswap Thompson Master Gardeners. Bronwen Scott and Megan Blackmore (Invasive Species, Kamloops) will explain why we should use safe alternatives to pesticides and Secwepemc Matriarch, Miranda Dick, will speak about Mother Earth, land and water protection. Please watch for more information on our Facebook page, Chase Sunflower, and posters around Chase and area.

Heat captain receives inaugural Jaxon Joseph scholarship submitted by Emanuel Sequeira, Director of Communications

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League has named Chase Heat captain Jacob Biensch as the inaugural recipient of the Jaxon Joseph Memorial Scholarship. Joseph was one of 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos killed in a tragic bus crash on April 6, 2018. He started his junior hockey career in the KIJHL with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in 2015 before moving on to play Junior A in the B.C. Hockey League and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Joseph’s goal was to play college hockey, and the $2500 scholarship named in his honour is intended for an individual w h o shares his athletic and academic aspirations while having displayed a commitment to community involvement. “It’s a huge honour to be recognized as the first recipient of this scholarship,” said Biensch. “I’m sure there were a lot of players that met the criteria in the league.” Biensch, who is currently exploring his educational and hockey opportunities, has been working towards a Bachelors of Science, with a major in Kinesiology, from the University of Alberta Augustana, while playing with the Heat. Heat Head Coach Brad Fox said it’s “just a fabulous honour for Jacob.” “Real fitting, I’m so proud of him,” said Fox. “What a fabulous way to end your career to be awarded this scholarship. It’s going to mean so much to him.” In 69 career KIJHL regular season games, the Marsden, Saskatchewan native had 35 goals and 37 assists for 72 points, to go

with three goals and seven points in seven playoff games. In 37 games this season, Biensch had 26 goals and 53 points and was named the Doug Birks division’s Most Valuable Player. Along with captaining his team on the ice, Biensch led the way in the community as way of giving back to the fans who filled the Art Holding Memorial Arena for Heat games. Biensch and his teammates visited elementary schools, helped the local Food Bank and participated in the Raise-A-Reader program. One of Biensch’s favourite activities were skates with minor hockey players. “We would go out there once a week and skate with the kids, skate with my little billet brothers sometimes, which was pretty cool,” he said. Biensch billeted with Tyson and Hayley Bentley, the same family his older brother Caleb stayed with during his final junior season, Biensch’s rookie season. The Bentleys have become a second family to him as he watched their young kids grow. Fox said that Biensch is a better person than he is a hockey player. “Three years ago when he came to us, playing on our hockey team as an 18-year-old, it was evident right away, fitting in, he always was the one to take control of something that needed to be done. He wasn’t afraid of that,” said Fox. “All I would have to do is text him and say we need to be here in an hour. That is why he was such an outstanding captain. “Essentially when you have leadership like that, it puts the onus on anybody that surrounds him to follow,” continued Fox.” It’s a hard act to follow. That was the precedent that he set.”

16th Annual Chase Rotary Club Service Auction – April 30th The Chase Rotary Club would like to invite everyone to our Annual Service Auction with a “Western Theme” on April 30th, 2022 at 5 pm to 1 am at Chase Community Hall. Tickets are available from any Rotarian and are $35 each and the evening includes a live auction, dinner and dance. This event has been cancelled since 2019 due to covid-19 and now, we are reviving same! As we are all very well aware, covid has caused many various fundraising events to being postponed or cancelled. In case of our club the cancellation of these events has certainly hampered our ability to assist the residents in the Chase area to the levels we have been accustomed to. This event has been traditionally our major fundraiser and the live auction is labelled a “Service Auction” as our Live Auction items include many service items. These items include vacation getaways, services donated by Rotarians including “ 2 Burly Old Men and a Truck” to assist with your spring cleanup and a

Article submitted by Chase Rotary Club 4 hour pontoon boat cruise on Shuswap Lake with all the toys and lunch included. This evening is a fun-filled affair with many activities and a few “entertainment” surprises. We feature a balloon, silent and live auction and a “chuckwagon” dinner. There will be a DJ for your dancing pleasure after live auction. There will be a no-host bar, door prizes and wine auction throughout evening. This fundraiser will allow us to continue our ability to fulfil our vision of making a difference in making Chase a more desirable place to live and enjoy. Just some example of projects, organizations and activities we have supported/continue to support are:

providing bursaries and scholarships to graduating students, purchase dictionaries for all grade 3 students in surrounding schools, instrumental in providing “Brain Bikes” to Haldane and CSS for students, sponsor annual golf tournament for Chase Literacy, biannual food drives for Chase Food Hamper Society, sponsor Chase Victim services, have purchased air bags for the Chase Fire Rescue, annual Father’s Day breakfast, provided the Village Town Clock, built washrooms at the kiddies pool, share the cost of Wilson Park and skateboard parks, assisted with costs associated with upgrading/ refurbishing of tennis courts and assisted with funds for Village’s legacy tree and museum roof. So again a big invite to come out and enjoy a fun filled evening while at the same time supporting your community!
