Catholic Church Vandalized over Easter Weekend Members of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Chase discovered a disappointing surprise after the Easter weekend. Vandals damaged the Church and the small outbuildings on Church property.

The small "church" used to house the Christmas Nativity scene had all the thick glass windows smashed and they tried to start a fire in the building.

The tiny "building" that housed a statue of Mary and Jesus had all the glass smashed the heavy statue of Mary was dragged and shoved over the bank were it was broken.

The (luckily empty) propane tank showed evidence of someone trying to light it.

The main Church building had it's basement windows broken.

The Neskonlith Band in conjunction with BC Wildfire Services are planning a prescribed burn between April 12 -23 (dependent on weather).

The burn will take place 3km southwest of Chase on IR2. Crews, and equipment will be onsite. The purpose of the burn is to reduce the build-up of wildfire combustible material next to the IR#2 subdivision.

½ cup chopped onion 2 ½ tablespoons pesto 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 (16 ounce) package pasta salt to taste ground black pepper to taste

Step 1 Cook pasta in a large pot of boiling water until done. Drain.

Step 2 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan over medium low heat. Add pesto, onion, and salt and pepper. Cook about five minutes, or until onions are soft.

Step 3 In a large bowl, mix pesto mixture into pasta. Stir in grated cheese. Serve.

It’s been a long winter and many of us are looking forward to getting outside and hitting the trails. Did you know that as we traverse through muddy areas, we are inadvertently picking up invasive plant seeds and transporting them along the trail?

Whether you’re a hiker, biker, horseback rider, or offroader, there are some simple actions you can carry out to stop invasive species in your tracks!

Time your excursions!

Spring weather is unpredictable leaving trails dry one day and a wet muddy mess the next. Avoid muddy trails, particularly ones where invasive plants are known to occur.

Time your adventure on the trails when conditions are dry and avoid travelling through areas where invasive plants exist.

Plan Your Route!

When setting out on the trails, plan your route according to topography. Early in the season, stick to low elevation and south exposed trails.

This is recommended because bottom valley temperatures can be 10 C warmer than higher elevation areas AND south facing slopes warm up much faster than north facing slopes. These areas are much drier earlier on in the year, reducing the potential for tracking mud contaminated with invasive plant seeds, up and down the trails. Also, avoid trails that lead over to a northern exposure – these trails will undoubtedly have shade trees and you are likely to run into mud or even snow.

Identify Invasive Plants!

Being able to identify invaders is key to avoiding them! Cell phone apps like

iNaturalist and WeedsBMP are great tools to help you identify some of our local invasives. At this time of year, recognizing the skeleton of last year’s plant is a useful tool for invasive plant identification. For example, the skeleton of spotted knapweed and burdock are easily recognized by their seed heads, which are just waiting to hitch a ride and spread last years seed.

There is no golden rule as to when the trails will be dry enough for recreation in the Spring; however, you can plan your activities to reduce the risk of getting a little mud on your tires, boots or hooves and help prevent the spread of invasive plants.

Telecommunication Infrastructure Survey submitted by Village of Chase

The Village of Chase has been approached by two telecommunications companies notifying the Village of their desire to upgrade cell phone and internet technology in the village.

This would require the installation of towers to improve communications infrastructure in the Village and put it on par with surrounding areas. While municipal approval is not a requirement of the approval process through the CRTC, it certainly helps to have local support demonstrated through a Council resolution.

Through the process of updating the Official Community Plan, it was mentioned by many in the community that cell service in Chase can be spotty

and that internet service is slow. Policies within the draft OCP indicate that the Village should advocate for better service in the community to improve quality of life for residents, assist with emergency response, and support local business.

The Village has also heard concerns from some residents on the perceived health impacts of cell towers in particular. In order to help Council with developing a position on whether to support these projects, we are asking for input from residents on this matter.

Obituary James Darwin Phillips

Passed away at age 84 in Salmon Arm, BC on March 17, 2021.

“Jim”, or Darwin, was born in Arrowood, Alberta on March 16, 1937, the second son of Laurance and Gladys Phillips of Milo, Alberta. He attended school in Milo and moved to Calgary to take up work with Alberta Government Telephones and later Burroughs Business Machines. He moved to Lethbridge, Alberta and soon found himself working in the retail automotive trades.

In Lethbridge Jim/Darwin met his first wife, Kirsten Doreen Nordli, a nurse. They married and begat one son, Baron. With JD pursuing wealth and lifestyle, and Doreen a professional career, the marriage fell victim.

Jim spent several years vagabonding in western Canada until he settled on the West Coast (New Westminster, Surrey and Whiterock) where he got clean Here he met his second wife, Susan. Susan Robe was also the survivor of a first marriage and had two children of her own, Sonja and Michelle.

He developed a few properties, got back on his feet, and then returned to something akin to the Phillips family business. He had grown up in a family of hardware merchants. Now, years later, he got into furniture, collectibles and yes, hardware new and used. He could sell anything and he did.

His store in Surrey was across the way from a restaurant called The Dell where he could sit down to one of his favourites, a veal cutlet.

The next move for JD and Susan was to the eastern Shuswap; a store in Chase and a rural home on the benchlands above Pritchard. It allowed a love of animals to flourish; horse, goats, dogs, cats. From there they moved east to Sorrento, a smaller animal farm and eventually a short lived store in Salmon Arm. Just down the hill from the Sorrento farm, the Home Cafe with veal cutlet on the menu.

Time was unkind to Jim's health. The marriage to Susan unravelled as the lifestyle of JD's younger years eroded his character and diminished his faculties. His former spouse Susan kept a watch over him, however. When he could no longer look after himself she had him taken in at the Shuswap Lions Manor in Sorrento. It would prove a stopgap.

With medical and social work assessments in hand, JD was moved to Picadilly Place in Salmon Arm, a 24/7 care facility, where he would remain until his passing. At request of the deceased, no service.

Interment alongside his parents at O Perfect Peace Cemetery, Milo, Alberta.

James Darwin Phillips is survived in B.C. by his son Baron as well as Susan Robe Phillips and daughters Sonja and Michelle. In Alberta he is survived by siblings; Murray, Sharon, Dale and Robert. His Alberta family is forever grateful to Susan for her abiding care giving and companionship of our brother in his declining years.

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Laura Coles. Laura was predeceased by her parents James D. and Susan Manuel; her brothers Norman, Clarence, and Al; and her sisters Ethel (Babe) and Ann (Dellie). Laura is survived by her sisters Norma and Doris, her children Kelly and Carryl, grandchildren James, Brian and Jennifer; as well as great grandsons Eric and Dominic, and step grandchildren Tristan, Kayla and her daughter Harmony. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Laura was well known in Chase for her work in several local restaurants including the Underwood, Chase Café, Mountainview, Jade Mtn, Craigs Bakery and the Loft. She is remembered by many for her smile, her great service (she never had to write down her orders), and her love of music. Laura was also a talented florist having apprenticed under her sister Ethel at Chase Flowers and Gifts. Later, Laura started her catering business and cooked for many events and weddings. She is well known for her baking and was sold out at many bake sales; she will be especially remembered for her pies and wedding cakes.

For many years Laura was involved with the Skatsin Elders Club where she fundraised for various events including the Neskonlith Elders Pow Wow, which she organized for several years. She also cooked for the Neskonlith annual community Christmas dinner and volunteered her time cooking for many celebrations of life for the community.

The family would like to acknowledge the following: Chase Clinic; Neskonlith Indian Band and NIB Health Center, in particular Kacy and Cassandra; the nurses and doctors at Royal Inland Hospital in particular Dr. Steven Rollheiser who knew her more than 40 years, first as her doctor in Chase and at RIH where oversaw her care until her passing; and the staff and nurses at Ponderosa Lodge. She also wanted to thank everyone who sent Christmas and birthday cards, and all the well wishes which she enjoyed reading many times.

Due to Covid restriction there will be a private service for immediate family Saturday April 10 at Shoenings Funeral Home. A community celebration of life will be announced in the upcoming days. By request she will be cremated and brought home to Neskonlith Lake.

VILLAGE OF CHASE Manager of Public Works

Located on the shores of the Little Shuswap Lake in the Southern Interior of BC, Chase is a scenic community of approximately 2600 people, 40 minutes East of Kamloops and West of Salmon Arm along the Trans Canada Highway. The community and surrounding area offer a wide range of services, recreational opportunities, community activities, affordable housing and a desirable climate.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Manager of Public Works is an integral part of the Village’s management team and must be a true team player. The Manager of Public Works leads a team of dedicated public works employees in delivering the public works services to the constituents of Chase including water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, road and sidewalk repair and maintenance, and solid waste collection. In addition, the Manager of Public Works oversees the maintenance of the vehicle and equipment fleet, parks and cemetery and Village owned facilities.

Equally important are the responsibilities of budget preparation and monitoring, the development and monitoring of maintenance programs, occupational health and safety, making recommendations for amendments to policies and bylaws, performance management, contract administration and the ability to skilfully oversee work done by contractors.

The successful candidate will be first and foremost a consummate professional. He or she must demonstrate sound knowledge of all aspects of municipal public works services, must demonstrate effective leadership skills, and be able to motivate employees while managing fairly and equitably.

As with any local government manager, the successful candidate must be knowledgeable of all applicable laws, regulations and codes governing the delivery of public works services and must demonstrate knowledge

of preparing and monitoring operational and capital budgets while having experience in asset management programs. Knowledge in the preparation of tenders and requests for proposals, excellent writing skills and an ability to present information to Council in public meetings with tact and diplomacy is essential.

The professional individual we are looking for must always be able to maintain professional relationships with all members of staff, with members of Council, with members of the public and with other levels of government.

At least 7 years of successful supervisory/ managerial experience is essential. A diploma in civil engineering technology, Level 2 certification in EOCP Water Distribution and EOCP Wastewater Treatment is desirable.

A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record is mandatory.
