CornStock Returns submitted by Chase & District Festival Society
THE CHASE HEAT JUNIOR HOCKEY SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
BILLET HOMES NEEDED We need Billet Homes for the 2018/2019 hockey season!! Season is September until end of February/ March. We need you to open your home! Please help us keep THE HEAT in Chase.
Each billet home receives $600.00 per month / per player and one general admission pass. The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2018-2019 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2018-March 2019). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please Contact Lana Adamson 250-574-3681
On August 14th Chase Memorial Beach will be the corniest spot in the Shuswap as Chase CornStock returns for its 9th year from 5pm-9:30pm. The Chase & District Festival Society is once again hosting this free community event featuring live music on the CornStock Stage by local artist Tanner Dawson (5:30), Country/Folk duo from Ontario Sarah Beatty (7:00), and a homecoming performance by Sadie Campbell (8:30). Over in the the Little Kernels Zone there will be some fun corned themed activities and two kid-friendly performances by the Kamloops Rivertown Players at 5pm and 6:30pm. For CornStockers 19+, cold beverages and good company is available in the Watering Hole from 6:30-9:00, with a great view of the CornStock Stage
and Little Shuswap Lake. Of course, no CornStock would be complete without fresh corn from Pete Murray’s Corn Farm and served by volunteers of the Chase & District Museum and Archives. For those who have a great corn themed recipe that your friends and family just can’t get enough of, why not enter the A-MAIZE-ing Cook Off Challenge hosted by the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce at 6:30. The winner will receive $25 and a dozen of fresh corn from Pete Murray’s Corn Farm, their recipe featured in the Chase Sunflower, and bragging rights as Chase’s Corniest Cook. Be sure to mark your calendars and come join your neighbours at Chase CornStock for a true Shuswap experience. For a current schedule and more event information, please visit ChaseCornStock. com.

Chase Rotary’s Summer Update by Chase Rotary Club
We have had a very busy summer so far, and many people to thank for our success. We have done barbecues, we had our concession in Salmon Arm for the Musical Ride, we did the concession for the Adams Lake Interfor Fishing Derby, Father`s Day Breakfast and we are at Music On The Lake every Tuesday night with our concession, and
summer is not over yet. If not for those who take the lead on these projects, we would not have success, and if the club members did not step up and man the concession, likewise we would not have success. Then we have our Friends of Rotary that step up to the plate! What more can I say except thank you one and all!

HOT WEATHER WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEK
The mercury is set to soar over the southern interior as a strengthening ridge of high pressure draws hot air up from the western U.S. Daytime maximum temperatures will peak in the mid to high thirties. Overnight lows will only drop to mid teens. A cooler stretch of weather
is expected to begin on Saturday. While the heat may be welcome for most, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Medical Health Officers are reminding people to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat.

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author, Journalist, & Freelance Writer We’ve all experienced great meals when dining out—and the not so good ones too. Certainly a talented Chef in the kitchen makes a difference, as does the smiling server who contributes to an extra special night out. It all goes a long way to a pleasant experience. I’ve always especially respected those who, through their employment, must deal with ‘Joe and Jill Public’ for sometimes Joe and Jill may have had a bad day and proceed to take it out on whomever they encounter—whether that be a server, a real estate agent, a cashier, or a flight attendant. Not fair, but we know it happens. And those who must regularly interact with the public surely have a special knack for continuing to smile, for being responsive, and for not losin’ it when confronted with an obstreperous customer, client or passenger. But back to the kitchen, being able to cook—and cook well—is a gift and it is a calling, methinks. While I love to prepare food from scratch and create something beyond humdrum meals, I can’t imagine doing it for a living. Not only does chef-prepared food taste delicious, it often looks too good to eat. Creative presentation is part of their art. It truly sets up a lovely dining experience. And isn’t it a treat to enjoy a unique meal, something that one doesn’t cook at home? A change-up in “what’s for dinner” is always welcome. Tunes up the

taste buds and contributes to a fine dining event. We all have our favourite eateries— sometimes just for something quick but often there is an anniversary or a birthday that warrants celebrating with an excellent meal. So next time you’re savouring a lovely repast, cooked by an expert, delivered to your table by a capable and smiling server, and in a charming or beautiful setting, be sure to give a thought to those who made it all happen. Beyond the gratuity left, a kind word or two to the ‘front of house’ staff and for the behind-the-scenes chef and assistants can make their day. They can definitely take the heat—of all kinds. And aren’t we grateful? Oh, and here’s a little chef trivia for ya. Chef Bits ‘n Bites • The tall white executive chef’s hat, called toque blanche, was designed with 100 pleats signifying the many ways a master chef can prepare eggs. • The chef’s double-breasted jacket can be reversed to hide stains that may accumulate, and the double layer of cotton insulates against heat or splattering of hot liquid. • The knotted cloth buttons on chef’s jackets are to withstand frequent washings and contact with pots, pans and other heavy equipment. • Chef’s standard black and white hound’s tooth patterned trousers are intentionally designed to camouflage stains—although some chefs and cooks wear black trousers nowadays. • It can take 10-12 years before a graduate from a catering or culinary college becomes an Executive Chef.
