I'm off to purchase 10 pairs of fire resistant boots for the men and women of Paxton Valley, who are fighting fires at their homes in the Westwold area. These real heros are just that "HEROS". Council Meeting Highlights submitted by Village of Chase
Council Meeting was held August 10, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. Community Hall and via Zoom for those wishing to attend remotely Amit Goel, Director of Goel’s Solutions Ltd. provided information on an Economic Immigration program being done in other communities, and how it would bring more businesses, families and employment opportunities to Chase and the surrounding areas. Council gave the bylaw for the new Official Community Plan two readings and there will now be a public hearing scheduled for any additional input anyone in the community may have about the plan. An idea to purchase three flag poles for the Chase Museum flags will be discussed during the 2022 budget meetings. Council awarded a road rehabilitation and paving contract to BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. to rehabilitate some roadways in Chase including parts of VLA Road, parts of Pine Street,
Margery Street and a portion of Third Avenue. For more information on how these particular roadways were chosen, please contact Joanne Molnar, Chief Financial Officer at the Village office at 250.679.3238 or email chase@chasebc.ca A bylaw to amend the Municipal Ticket Information Bylaw was given first three readings – when adopted this bylaw will include a fine for nonrecyclable materials being placed in one’s recyclables container. Council passed a resolution for the Firefighters’ Association to maintain ownership of their Structural Protection Unit and trailer. The Village plans to refurbish the exterior of the Joyce Dunn Theatre (Memorial Park Bandshell) in 2021 and will discuss further improvements in 2022. Council received a memorandum regarding the proposed music concert in Memorial Park on August 14, 2021. As the event has been cancelled, no action
was required from Council. Council resolved to place a Notice on Title on the property at 775 Cedar Avenue. Several infractions have been outstanding on this property for some time, and to legally protect the municipality and any future owners of the property, the Notice on Title will inform of deficiencies. If the deficiencies are rectified the owner can apply to have the Notice removed from the title. Mr. Amit Goel, explained to Council that he has purchased a building in Chase and wishes to develop a Healthcare Assistant Diploma Program training academy. The next Council meeting will take place on September 28, 2021 at 4 p.m. at the Community Hall and via Zoom for those who wish to observe remotely. For information on anything related to Village business, please contact us by phone at 250.679.3238 or email chase@ chasebc.ca

Interior Health heat warning reminders submitted by Interior Health
As heat continues to build in the Interior, rising temperatures will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses. To review current weather advisories, including heat alerts, from Environment Canada, please visit https://weather. gc.ca/mainmenu/alert_menu_e.html Excessive heat exposure can lead to weakness, disorientation and exhaustion. In severe cases, it can also lead to heat stroke, also known as sunstroke. Heat stroke can be a life-threatening medical emergency. Interior Health medical health officers advise that risks from extreme heat exceed risks from COVID-19. During heat warnings: · Prolonged exposure to high indoor temperature can be life-threatening. Anyone without access to air conditioning should find cooler indoor alternatives to avoid prolonged heat exposure. If you have air conditioning and vulnerable members of your family do not, consider bringing them to your house. Sleep in the coolest room of the house, even if that is not your bedroom. Sleeping in the basement will provide relief to the body overnight. The body stores heat from the core to the skin. Sit in a cool bath to draw heat from the body into the water. Where it is safe and appropriate, open windows and doors when the outdoor temperature goes down below the indoor temperature a night, then close the cooler air indoors in the morning by shutting doors and windows and pulling curtains to keep the sun out. Leaving windows open during the day just lets the hot air indoors. Some of the people most susceptible to severe heat related illness and death may not realize they are getting too hot. Check on them in-person, observe their temperature indoors, and notice what
it says on their thermostat. Persistent indoor temperatures over 30°C (86°F) can be high risk. · If people are wearing a mask and have difficulty breathing, they should remove the mask and seek medical attention if necessary. Who is most at risk? Anyone can suffer from heat-related illness, but some people are at greater risk. Take extra care to check on the following people regularly: •
• • • •
Infants and young children, who rely on adults to monitor their environments and to provide them with enough fluid to drink. People who are under-housed with fewer options to avoid prolonged heat exposure. People 65 years or older, or anyone who needs assistance monitoring their well-being. People with heart problems and breathing difficulties. People who exercise or who work outside or in a hot environment.
Symptoms to watch for? The symptoms of heat-related illness can range from mild to severe. They include: Pale, cool, moist skin Heavy sweating Muscle cramps Rash Swelling, especially hands and feet Fatigue and weakness Light headedness and/or fainting Headache Nausea and/or vomiting More severe symptoms – including high fever, hallucinations, seizures and unconsciousness – require urgent medical attention. Call 911, move to a cool place, and cool the person with
water and fanning. What steps can people take to avoid heat related illness? Plan your outdoor activity before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to avoid the most intense sun. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. Water is the best choice. Avoid physical work or exercise outside in the heat of the day. If you must work or exercise outside, drink two to four cups of water each hour, even before you feel thirsty. Rest breaks are important and should be taken in the shade. Apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn, but remember this doesn’t protect from the heat. Stay in the shade, or create your own shade with lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, a wide brimmed hat, and/or an umbrella. If you’re struggling to keep cool, move indoors to an air-conditioned building or take a cool bath or shower. At temperatures above 30°C (86°F), fans alone may not be able to prevent heatrelated illness. Never leave children or pets alone in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 52° C (125° F) within 20minutes inside a vehicle when the outside temperature is 34° C (93° F). Leaving the car windows slightly open will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature. Regularly check older adults, infants and children, anyone under-housed with fewer options to avoid heat, those doing a lot of physical activity or working outside, and people with chronic disease or mental illness for signs of heat-related illness. Make sure they are keeping cool and drinking plenty of fluids. Check on those who are unable to leave their homes, and people whose judgment may be impaired.

Interior Health begins returning Chase evacuees Interior Health has begun to support the return of care home residents to Chase, now that evacuation alerts for that area associated with the White Rock Lake wildfire have been rescinded. Repatriation will occur gradually to ensure appropriate staffing and resources are in place when residents return home. Families will be notified directly as their loved ones are moved back. Anyone wishing to confirm their loved one’s current location can call: 1.877.442.2001. Interior Health supported the proactive relocation of Parkside Community Retirement Living residents and community clients with higher care needs on Aug. 7 to neighbouring communities, due to local evacuation alerts. Normal weekday operations at the Chase Primary Health Care Centre and Chase Health Clinic were not impacted by the alerts. IH is monitoring the situation closely as the wildfire remains unpredictable. Interior Health will continue to work closely with municipalities, regional districts, and the BC Wildfire Service to ensure precautions are underway to protect patients, clients, and residents. Those requiring support during this crisis are encouraged to call the BC Crisis Line at 310-6789. Interior Health continues to monitor wildfire activity across the region. Wildfire planning includes supporting anyone who may be in isolation due to COVID-19. We will ensure separate arrangements are made for anyone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 to protect the public from potential exposure.
