August 13th saw Chase Memorial Park come alive with celebration of CORN!

submitted by Chase Festival Society The 10th annual Interior Savings CornStock welcomed over 700 guests, locals and visitors, for an evening of music, activities, food, beer, and of course, Pete Murray's world famous corn, served hot and buttered by the Chase Museum. On the CornStock Stage, Jeremy Kneeshaw brought his wicked guitar skills and dynamic voice for a full hour set to start the evening off. Soul Patch followed with worldly beats and soulful rhythms as guests enjoyed dinner. Tennessee Walker's six piece band, featuring Chase's own Tanner Dawson, capped off the night with a thumping showcase of harmonies and guitar solos. Over at the Little Kernels Zone, the staff of Interior Savings kept kids (and those young at heart) entertained with a variety of crafts including Corn husk dolls paper hats, corn husk dolls, and book marks. While non-profit groups shared information on services available to the community, including a display by the Village and Fire Dept on Fire Smart awareness. The museum volunteers husked and served cob after cob of fresh corn from Pete Murray's Corn Farm. This is the 40th season that Pete has been growing and perfecting corn - and if you missed it, there is a large card available for the public to sign which will be set up at Music on the Lake on August 20th to congratulate and thank Peter and Ray for their contributions towards the community. A special fundraising plea was put out at CornStock this year for the family of Frank Antoine, who is the former Indigenous Cultural Coordinator for the Quaaout Lodge, and a director on the board for the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association. The Antoine's 8 month old son recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour and started chemotherapy treatments, which will be over the course of 6 months. Further treatment may be required after which may take up to a year or more. A hat was passed around the CornStock crowd, and over $1000 was collected, which will help the family with accumulating expenses as both parents are off work without pay. A GoFundMe page has been set up online if you'd like to contribute to the Antoines or you can send them an e-transfer email to frankant27@gmail.com The Festival Society would like to thank the Village of Chase, Interior Savings, and Pete Murray's Corn Farm for their continued support of CornStock. A huge thanks also goes to all the wonderful volunteers who helped plan, set up, serve drinks, tear down, and all the other behind the scenes duties that make an event like this possible.

Environmental Benefits of Farmer's Markets Submitted by the Chase Environmental Action Group (CEAG)

We are extremely fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world! And to be able to enjoy excellent food and entertainment throughout the summer months. There are many local Markets (Chase, Sorrento, Celista, etc.) as well as countless opportunities to listen to talented musicians almost every evening. It is great to see tourists as well as Chase residents stopping by the Chase Farm and Craft Market on Fridays. It appears that more and more people are choosing to buy fresh local produce and to support local homebased businesses. If you are concerned about ever-increasing carbon emissions and their connection to climate change, buying local is one of the most effective ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint. This "footprint" is a measurement of the carbon emissions created by your activities and lifestyle. If you live in the Village of Chase, you can reduce your carbon footprint even more, as well as improving your health, by walking or cycling to the Market! There are many other benefits in purchasing local foods. First, they taste better--mainly because they are much fresher. Most will have been harvested within 24 hours of the market. And the fresher the item, the more nutrients. Eating locally means less carbon emissions created by transportation. It is estimated that the average food item on your plate has travelled 100's of km. https://www.devp.org/en/sharelent/ solidarity-calendar/food-transportation At any Farmers' Market, you can ask how and when the food was raised and

harvested. The best way to take advantage of the local produce available is to come down to the Market, see what is on the table, then plan what you will eat for the week! Rather than making your shopping list at home, try planning your menu the other way around. Vendors can provide ideas for some of the unfamiliar items such as hakurei (salad turnips) or fennel. There are many recipes available on-line these days, as well as websites that assist cooks in using seasonal items. Always check to see what is already in your refrigerator or other storage areas before you leave home to purchase new items. It is estimated that over 50% of food produced in Canada is wasted. Much of that waste occurs before the food ever reaches the c o n s u m e r, b u t according to one study, the average Canadian household spends over $1500 a year on food that eventually ends up in the garbage (and which often creates significant carbon emissions in landfills). https://wrwcanada.com/en/get-involved/ resources/food-waste-themed-resources/ food-waste-canada-fact Just “food for thought”, gardeners that have a surplus of produce can also sell their goods at the Farmers’ Market or donate it to the Food Bank. Both farmers and musicians (and other artists) are often asked to donate some of their produce or time to various events. And they willingly do so. But these two groups of people--those who provide food for the body or what could be called "food for the soul" often have very low incomes. Any thoughts as to why that is? (Another group who often do not receive

a living wage are care-givers, but we won't get into that here....) In closing, we invite you to drop by the Chase Farm and Craft Market at Chase Plaza on Brooke Drive every Friday until Oct. 25 (10 am to 2 pm), and make sure to take in Music on the Lake on Tuesday evenings during August! Also, anyone interested in joining the Environmental Action Group, please phone 250-6793228 for more information. Our next meeting is August 28th, from 7pm8:30pm. Contact ajmclaren@cablelan.net FMI.

Page 9 • August 16th, 2019 • Chase Sunflower Obituary James (Jim) Hazell Wrinkles and lines do not define The age of the spirit So many moments in time are Imprinted in our minds Forever we will feel it. - By Chelsea Lee, written August 2019 for her Papa With sadness, we announce the passing of James (Jim) Hazell, in Kamloops BC, at the age of 92 of natural causes. Jim was born in Vancouver on March 6, 1927, married Margaret Elizabeth Thompson in 1948 (pre-deceased in 2003) with whom he had two children Daniel James Hazell (currently in Kamloops) and Diane Gail Lee (Hazell) (currently in South Surrey). He is immediately survived by his two children Dan and Diane, their spouses Lilah Hazell and Tom Lee, his grandchildren, Richard James Hazell, Sherry Diane Hazell (Troy Wurm), Michael William Lee (Jill Dunn) and Chelsea Nicole Lee (James Colley). Jim was an avid athlete in his youth and never afraid to take a risk. He married young at 21, started his own construction company in Vancouver in the 1950s and when the market slowed, did not hesitate to pack up his young family and move to Kamloops and begin anew (1964). He successfully completed his high school graduation in his 40’s, worked for the government for a while, but in a short time returned to the trade he loved, and was so good at, using his hands and building. He was able to retire at 55 and contribute to a variety of Chase BC community committees and activities. He won several contribution awards from the Chase Lion’s Club where he lived from 1984 to 2018. After Marg’s passing in 2003, he became a companion for Rose Kent who has survived him (age 97) and together they supported each other through the challenges that come with age. In spite of advancing time, neither Jim nor Rose let their ages stop them from fishing or exploring this wonderful province. The family was able to say our good-byes at our annual family reunion at Sheridan Lake just 4 days before Jim died, and while hard, none of us could have asked for a more celebratory end to a well-lived life. We have so many moments with him imprinted in our minds, and much love and gratitude for all he taught us. This poem (author unknown) is ingrained in our family values, taught to Jim by his mother and passed on to all of us. If you mean to do a thing and you mean to do it really, Never let it be by halves, But do it fully, freely. Dad/Papa/Uncle Jim/Jim - your life was never by halves, always full, and you are now free. There will not be a funeral, Jim will join Marg at her place of rest at the Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Chase Lions Club in memory of Jim.
