Krush Studio Brings Dance Classes to Chase

C

Thank You to our community for your patience during these difficult times!

by Kelsey Snelgrove

oming this fall, there will be a variety of dance classes, from jazz to tap, offered right in Chase. Krush Dance is a successful recreational studio based in Ashcroft, that believes each person has the potential to grow as a dancer because they know not everyone wants to compete and commit to the added cost, pressure and time involved with competitive dance. Company founder Kelly Mykyte felt compelled to bring these dance classes to Chase this fall because she grew up in a small town herself and “can’t imagine what it would have been like to not have extra curricular activities to do”. “I decided to offer these classes in Chase because I have recently been located to Kamloops, due to my husbands job, and since I drive to Ashcroft weekly I thought I

would add another small town to my list,” said Kelly. Starting this September, “Miss Kelly” will be teaching jazz, hip hop, tap, lyrical and dance for kids from ages 3 and up, as well as offering tap dance for adults. No previous experience is necessary and Kelly meets dancers where they are at. ...Continued on page 6

The boat launch at Memorial Park has been closed due to low water levels. Mill Park boat launch is still open for launching. The wading pool will not be opened at all this year. The Village’s garbage truck is back up and running fully – collecting both household solid waste and recyclables on the regular schedule.

60th Wedding Anniversary:

Ron and Grace Fox were married in Telkwa, BC on Aug 20, 1960. They raised their 4 children in Quesnel, BC while owning and operating a building supply store and hobby farm. On retirement, they moved to Sidar BC where they fulfilled a life-long dream to live in the Kootenies and homestead. It was a project of love that they sadly left in order to move closer to their children. Ron and Grace have lived in Chase for the past 13 years and have enjoyed building close friendships and community with their neighbours, within their church and through their involvement with the Seniors’ Centre. Thank you to everyone who has blessed their lives in Chase. They will be quietly celebrating the occasion with their children and are grateful for your well-wishes.

NEW! Dance Classes in Chase Krush Dance has a heart for small towns and has been serving Ashcroft since 2016. The studio started with 60 dancers and has grown into over 100 and is still going strong with weekly classes. Since my recent relocation to Kamloops, I have the opportunity to dance with the people of Chase, won’t you join me?

“I want to encourage physical activity to everyone. I think it’s important to keep moving at all ages. Besides how awesome is it to do something that’s so fun you don’t even realize you’re doing a workout,” she said. Kelly has been dancing since she was a kid and is “super excited to start dancing with the people in Chase,” said Kelly. “When I started adult dance classes in Ashcroft, I have to say it was a bit selfish because I wanted to dance with my peers. The adults ended up loving it, and the initial group of eight turned into almost 40 adult dancers. We have a blast and it keeps us in shape. It’s also a very good outlet for stress and helps keep your mind sharp”. The Krush Dance classes will take place on Wednesdays at a newly renovated dance studio in Chase, in the loft of the RBC Building at 744 Shuswap ave. The 14 week sessions will follow all Covid protocols including smaller class sizes to observe physical distancing, hand washing and sanitization. You can check out her website for more information at krushdance.com, or reach her by email at krushdance@hotmail. com, or call 403-391-1148.

RCMP RELEASE submitted by Chase RCMP

Hyundai vs Ford pickup On August 1st, 2020, Chase RCMP were advised of a motor vehicle collision near the 2000 block of Squilax Anglemont Road in Lee Creek. The complainant reported seeing a grey Hyundai Accent swerve off the right hand side of the road, where it collided with a parked, unoccupied, pickup. When police arrived, the driver, a 44 year old male from Maple Ridge, was being assessed by paramedics. Police observed the driver to be slurring his words and noted an odour of alcohol on his breath. Breath samples were obtained, roadside with the Alcohol Screening Device. Results determined the driver to be impaired by alcohol. He was issued a 90 day prohibition from driving and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Motorcycle vs SUV On August 1st, 2020 at approximately 1:26 pm, police happened to be in the parking lot of the Sorrento Inn when westbound traffic on the Trans Canada Highway came to a stop. Police heard the screech of tires and watched a motorcycle collide into the back of a black SUV. The motorcycle driver, a 19 year old male from Salmon Arm, was checked by paramedics. The driver did not appear to have been injured in the collision, whereas the motorcycle and the SUV sustained minor damage. An investigation by police determined that the motorcycle was not insured. The driver was issued a ‘No Insurance’ violation ticket worth $598.00. Cause of the collision was determined to be inattention. BMW and sharp a curve On August 1st, 2020 at 9:54 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road just before the Scotch Creek bridge. A grey BMW convertible failed to negotiate a sharp right hand curve, left the roadway, hit a tree, spun around 180 degrees, and then flipped over, landing upside down. Neither the driver nor the passenger was seriously injured, likely because both wearing seatbelts. Speed was thought to be a factor in the collision. Police left behind two orange traffic cones to mark the collision scene for the

tow driver. The cones somehow went missing during the night. If found, please kindly return them to the Chase RCMP Detachment – no questions asked. Distress call On August 2nd, 2020 at 2:35 pm, Chase RCMP received a 911 call from a cell phone. A male voice said that a child had jumped into the river and then the call was dropped. Police conducted patrols for approximately 2 hours but were unable to locate the source of the call. No further distress calls were received. When police called the original phone number back, no one answered the phone. It remains undetermined as to why the police were called. Sleeping man vs intoxicated women On August 6th, 2020 at 9:41 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to assist with an unusual situation developing in Pritchard. The complainant reported that he was sleeping in his car parked near the Trans Canada Highway, and awoke to an intoxicated female banging on his vehicle. She then returned to her own car and started blaring the horn. She went back and forth multiple times between the two vehicles, all the while screaming and yelling. She opened the complainant’s door and punched him. He punched her back and then decided it was in his best interest to drive to a different location to wait for police. Police attended and located the female, a 40 year old resident of the Lower Mainland. She was found to be highly intoxicated by alcohol and was lodged in the drunk tank for the night. She was released from custody in the morning with no charges. Intoxicated teenagers and stabbing On August 8th, 2020 at 11:00 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a stabbing in the Chase area. Police located a group of intoxicated female teenagers and young adults, several of whom had injuries and were bleeding. Apparently, the youth had been partying together when a fight started between two of the females. During the fight, one female broke a bottle and stabbed the other. Several more people joined in the fight. Continued on page 9...

Comfort & Warmth – Chase Country Quilters Know It Well! by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author and Journalist

For 20 years, Chase Country Quilters have been busy doing what they enjoy, doing it well, and contributing to Chase and area. And quilting has been around for a very long time. Linked to the Latin word “culcita,” meaning to bolster or cushion, some of the earliest quilting was in a garment worn under armour by Crusaders in the 12th century, which later developed into the doublet, a fashionable part of men’s clothing for 300 years. Quilts were introduced and made in Canada in the late 18th century with the arrival of settlers. Some of these were sewn using re-worked fabrics from worn out clothes or scrap materials from other sewing. Early recycling. Today many antique quilts can be found in museums and private collections. Whether fine or functional, they’ve served multiple purposes and represent the talent and vision of their maker—the quilter who created them. Made from design blocks over soft batting and backing material, the three layers were originally sewn together by hand, whereas today they are sandwiched together by machine. While there now are hundreds of quilt designs, Log Cabin, Lone Star and Dresden Plate were some of the original patterns utilized. Chase has the good fortune to be home to the Chase Country Quilters (CCQ), the cluster of talented and enthusiastic ladies who have been honing their craft and helping others for decades. Meeting Mondays and Wednesdays in their rented space at Chase’s Parkside Seniors Residence, the CCQ group has made hundreds of beautiful quilts of various sizes over the years, most of which have been donated to local residents and organizations.

Sponsored by Todd

As well, the quilters and their lovely creations provide some diversion for residents, staff and guests alike at Parkside. Finished quilts are often displayed in the centre’s dining area, as well as in CCQ’s work room—and watching a quilt develop is undoubtedly interesting and becomes a topic of conversation. CCQ members Marjorie Erno and Julia Platteel report that besides their love of quilting, they particularly enjoy the camaraderie and friendships that develop around their quilt work— as well as the special contributions the group can make to the community. And their quilts are definitely a team effort. For each one, there’s the design stage, fabrication of the blocks that will eventually make up the top of the quilt, sewing the blocks carefully together, the “sandwiching” of the sewn-together pattern blocks over batting and backing along with the quilting done on their large long-arm machine, and finally the binding that provides the finished edge. CCQ member Joy Vaal regularly services, cleans and maintains the ten sewing machines that are an essential part of the group’s very productive operation. Quilt blocks are attached to flannel on design walls of the club’s workroom as a given pattern comes together. Thereafter, members complete various components of the quilts, tackling different tasks, all of which expand their skills and provides diversity in the weekly work. During 2019, this industrious club made 201 personal-size quilts. Fifty-one were sold and 150 were donated. Over the years, the

Chase beneficiaries of this quilted artwork, given as auction items, have been the Team Chase cancer group, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the museum, the Legion, the Chase Heat hockey organization, and the curling club. In addition, forty newborns were given baby quilts last year through the Chase & District Public Health Nurse. Hospice Kamloops, as well as the pediatrics, cancer, and renal dialysis departments of the Royal Inland Hospital also received comfort quilts as gifts for patients undergoing treatment and in care. Although much fabric is given to the CCQ group each year (donors know it will be put to good use), the club does need to purchase backing, batting and threads. The sale of some of their handiwork finances these items. If they receive denim, they sew a denim quilt. If it’s plaid, a modern plaid creation is made. The group works with whatever they have—reporting that the fabric often “speaks” to them as to what should be made from it. And their nimble fingers get to work! The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that the quilters could not meet, have been unable to sew, and have yet to decide if they will hold their show and sale this fall. Stay tuned for announcements about this wonderful needle and thread art being available in the future There is something beyond the soothing cosiness and cuddles of such a coverlet that inherently touches someone under its warmth—that would be the love and dedication that has gone into a handmade quilt—a wonderful gift to receive or to give.

RCMP REPORT Continued.... Note - report edited for space, not all incidents are included

In the melee that followed, at least four females were injured. One injury was relatively serious with bones and tendons exposed. Two ambulances were required to transport the injured parties to hospital. Several other girls were transported to hospital by their parents. The accused, a 19 year old female from Kamloops, was also injured and required stitches. She was held in police custody overnight and released in the morning with a court date for charges of aggravated assault.

Driver refuses to stop On August 10th, 2020 at 4:34 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of an erratic driver on the Trans Canada Highway, headed Westbound from Sorrento. The complainant reported that a Ford F150 with a matching canopy, was unable to maintain a lane and had passed a vehicle on the shoulder of the road. Police intercepted the vehicle as it approached Chase, but the driver refused to stop for police. Police recognized the driver, a 41 year old male from Chase. Kamloops RCMP located the vehicle and attempted to stop it in the Valleyview area, but again the driver refused to stop. Eventually, the vehicle entered a parking lot in the Lower Sahali area. Police boxed the vehicle in and arrested the driver for ‘Flight from Police’ and ‘Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle’. Breath samples were obtained from the driver and the results were ‘0’. It is unknown why the driver would not stop for police. Man injured in quadding accident On August 11th, 2020 at approximately 6:50 pm, Chase RCMP were requested to meet Emergency Health Services in Scotch Creek for a male who had been found bleeding from the head, on a Forest Service Road, by passers-by. These passers-by assisted the male, using their emergency first aid skills and then transported the male to a business in Scotch Creek to meet the ambulance. The male, a 41 year old from Celista, reported that he had been in an accident while quadding. He was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for treatment of head and back injuries. Violent man with weed wacker On August 12th, 2020 at 3:27 pm, Chase RCMP were dispatched to Sorrento for a report of an assault. The complainant, a 64 year old female from Surrey, was visiting a family member in Sorrento. She noticed that a neighbour was acting somewhat oddly throughout the day but didn’t think much of it until she realized that he appeared to be using a weed wacker to shoot rocks at her car. When she asked him to stop so that she could move her car out of the way, he hit her in the stomach with a weed wacker. The neighbour, a 65 year old male from Sorrento, resisted arrest, forcing police to physically restrain him. The accused will be facing assault

charges in Kamloops Provincial Courthouse.

condolences to his family and friends.

Missing person found deceased On August 8th, 2020, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision on McGillivray Lake Forest Service Road. The complainant reported she had located a pickup truck, at the bottom of a steep embankment. Police attended and determined the driver, a 29 year old male from Chase, to be deceased at the scene. The driver had been subject of a missing person report several days earlier. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, but a mechanical inspection of the vehicle determined that the truck was not roadworthy and had considerable mechanical defects that may have contributed to it leaving the road. Additionally, the driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Chase RCMP would like to extend their

Single vehicle collision in Turtle Valley On August 14th, 2020 at 8:18 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Skimikin Road and Hepburn Road in Turtle Valley. The complainant reported that an SUV had gone over a steep embankment, directly into a shallow creek. Tire tracks in the gravel road indicated that the vehicle had failed to stop at a ‘T’ intersection and had gone directly over the bank. Sadly, the driver, a 39 year old male from Fort St John, was found to be deceased at the scene. While the cause of the collision is unknown, an investigation determined that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The investigation is ongoing. Chase RCMP would like to express their condolences to the family and friends.

But I can’t put my finger on it! My son asked me, "Is this pool safe for diving?" I chuckled and replied... "It deep ends..."

I once interviewed a pair of underwear. Suffice to say, it was brief.

My wife recently gave me an ultimatum. It was either her or my addictive sweet tooth... the decision was a piece of Cake.

Pin Chatter: News From the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Collins, Village Lanes

Welcome back, Bowlers! To say that we have missed you has been a massive understatement. We are so happy to announce the re-opening of Village Lanes. We did the math, and due to COVID-19 the bowling center was closed for business for a total of 140 consecutive days. We cannot thank everyone enough for your kind words and outpouring support through this crazy time. It has been a super long and tricky process in trying to get Village Lanes back up and running again, but we finally managed to check all the boxes. Please remember, this is as new to us as it is to you, and new processes will take some getting used to (and believe us, there are a LOT of new processes.) First and foremost, all we ask is that if you have any questions or concerns, please come and talk to us. So, what will bowling look like come September? Different. Upon entering Village Lanes, there will be a hand sanitizer station set up for your convenience. As you approach the counter (barriered with plexiglass) you will be asked to fill out a form, confirming that you are not experiencing any flu like symptoms. Want your temperature checked? No problem! We have a forehead thermometer ready at the front counter upon your request, along with disposable masks if you would like one while you bowl. Masks will not be mandatory at Village Lanes but are recommended by your health officials. After you’ve got your sanitized bowling shoes, you will be assigned a table that you must stay at for the duration of your time at the lanes, other than to bowl, use a self-serve station, use the washrooms,

Duck Range Plumbing & Heating

or exit the building. All our tables have been spaced six feet apart, and social distancing stickers and posters have been displayed throughout the building. Still with me? Time to bowl! Public bowling? No problem. You will be spaced with an additional lane between your group, and any other group in the building. Lots of room for social distancing, and safe play! League bowling? A few more rules will apply to ensure we can maintain social distancing. Every ball, lane, table, and high touch area is being sanitized after every group that finishes their game, and throughout the building during the day. We have worked long and hard to make sure that the Village of Chase still has a bowling center, and all that we ask is that you follow the new protocols in place, so that we can keep Village Lanes up and running for years to come, and continue to provide our amazing citizens a safe and fun place to play. Again, we just want to send our sincerest thank you to everyone for all the support we have received, and we cannot wait to see you at the lanes! Fall League Registration dates are coming up the last two weekends in August. Mark your calendars to get all signed up! Whether you are 9 or 90. Bowling is for everyone. Snowbirds – Are you sticking around this winter? We’ve got leagues for you! Check out the advertisement on the front page for more information! Sincerely, Kelly and Calyn Collins, Owners at Village Lanes
