Last MOTL to Raise Funds for Fires
submitted by Brock Endean
The Chase and District Festival Society invites everyone to join us for an evening of hope and resilience, as we come together to support our friends, families, and neighbours affected by the wildfires in the Shuswap. The originally scheduled Music on the Lake event for August 29th will now start at 6pm and include performances by The Liz Blair Project, Ben Klick, and Chase’s own Tanner Dawson. Admission to the show is by donation and all funds raised will be directed to the Shuswap Community Foundation’s
Emergency Response Fund. Though the Shuswap is well known for its natural beauty, it’s our unwavering community spirit and support that truly makes this area so wonderful. Together we can help heal and rebuild!
If you have been collecting stamps as part of the Lakeside Summer Music Series, please remember to bring your card, with your contact information filled in, so you can be entered into the door prize draws that will happen during the show on August 29th.

to the Editor
Dear editor,
Upon reading the rather lengthy list of somewhat negative public statements on various community issues to our Chase council, I felt compelled to encourage those folks who are making a difference. All summer I’ve observed tireless workers leading groups of children around the village to parks , the pool, and the library. They’ve painted beautiful murals and
A Day In Chase
I am from Coquitlam, BC and on Friday, August 18th. I was driven to Chase by my son to avoid the horrendous fires in Scotch Creek, Magna Bay, and Celista. I was to catch the Red Express at 3:40 pm but because of the fire my son had to drop me off at 6:00 AM in front of Cafe Natalie’s. A nice gentleman (I didn’t get his name) saw me sitting there and kindly brought me a coffee. At 9:00 am two ladies helped me into Natalie’s, I was invited to order breakfast and sit there as long as I needed to. The breakfast was one of the best I have ever eaten and I thank the staff for being so kind and generous for their hospitality.
I stayed in the restaurant for awhile (it got busy and I am sure they needed my table) so I went outside again. Another lady by the name of Val invited me to go down to the Library where it is was cool and comfortable and I was welcomed by Michelle Pottle, Head Librarian. I stayed
planted gardens as well as leading sports and bike events. Some have raised money for life jackets, the splash park and bmx track. Our children are active, creative, and they are learning. A few tax dollars from citizens also are very well spent as we invest in the future citizens of Chase. Kudos to all.
Sincerely,
Kathy Moore
there for awhile until I had to make my way to the bus pickup. I stopped in at the Wild Scoopz & Bistro and had a delicious milkshake. While sitting and waiting for the bus a young lady and her friend Becky where also waiting for the bus. We could smell the smoke and by 4:00 pm realized that the bus was not coming. For me this was very scary because I didn’t know anyone there. Becky finally found me place to stay with Paul, his wife and daughter, and later on Paul found a couple, John and Maureen (and their little puppy) who coming into Burnaby and agreed to bring me home. Their help was most generous and I made it home OK.
I am very grateful to all the people that helped me during that day in Chase, and I wanted to make sure that I passed on my appreciation to those wonderful people of Chase.
Sincerely and with appreciation
Elaine Renforth

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR OUR SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY
Please continue to donate!

Due to the Bush Creek East Wildfire causing the Village of Chase to be under evacuation alert, Interior Savings and community partner Chase Minor Baseball Association have cancelled the Moonlight Movie Night scheduled tonight (August 21). Our heart goes out to all the residents of Chase impacted by nearby wildfires, and of course the surrounding communities in the Thompson-Nicola and Central and South Okanagan regions during this time of uncertainty.
To lend our support to those grappling with the worst fire season on record, we’ve partnered with Gulf & Fraser. For every dollar donated to the United Way’s United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund, together we’ll match it up to $20,000. For more information visit www.interiorsavings.com.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate the impacts of the BC wildfires and smoky conditions.
Donated Funds to Help Players in Need
submitted by Chase Minor Hockey Association
Many community members may remember Betty Carkner. Her husband, Russ Carkner was one of the original fundraisers and organizers of the referendum in town to build the arena. You may also have seen his plaque hanging at Art Holding Memorial Arena. Their grandson Russell Hassler, grew up playing locally, eventually going on to play for the Chase Heat. Betty was an extremely proud hockey grandma!
When Betty passed in 2018, her family asked for donations to be made to Chase
If you are a CMHA family who has been directly affected by the current wildfires, or if you know of a CMHA family who has been affected, please get in touch with us. With the help of the funds donated through Betty Carkner, Chase Minor Hockey has made funds readily available for families to offset the cost and assist purchasing equipment now.
The hockey community is a family, and at times like these, we all want to do whatever we can to help. Please don’t hesitate to email chaseminorbc@gmail.com or text/call

Obituary Margaret Sophy Abel (nee Bennett)
Margaret Abel (nee Bennett) was born in 1922, on the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc reserve. On August 13, 2023, at the age of 101, she left this earth to begin her journey home to the stars, surrounded by her family at her home in Kelowna, BC.
Predeceased by her loving husband Philip in 1992, Margaret was the last living member of a large, blended family of 16 siblings. Her brothers include Adam, Eddie, and Wilfred Bennett. Her sisters include Irene Blair, Lottie Buchanan, and Elsie Bergan.
Mom was a survivor of the Kamloops Indian residential school and spoke of her memories in the book “Behind Closed Doors: Stories from the Kamloops Indian Residential School” published by the Secwepemc Cultural Education Society in 2000. Despite this painful childhood experience, she always had a smile and hug for everyone she met, and she spread love and positivity her entire life.
After meeting Dad, they eventually settled in Terrace, BC to raise their four children together – James, Ray, Jean, and Lena. Fondly known as “Mom Abel” by many longtime friends and neighbors, her and Dad’s family includes 7 Grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and so many others that she crossed paths with over her lifetime.
Mom worked hard all her life raising a family and caring for her family. A naturally gifted artist, she also enjoyed canning, baking, knitting, and sewing. She was known for her cheeky sense of humor, and she had a lovely smile and a generous nature.
Mom and Dad returned to the Okanagan to enjoy their golden years. Their home was where the family gathered for many summers over the years, mainly in Keremeos and Penticton.

As of 12:00 noon on August 24, 2023 the Village of Chase is still on evacuation ALERT.
Presently there is no Order to leave your home and there is no immediate threat.
This ALERT is in place to prepare you IF it becomes necessary to leave the community.
Are you someone who might need a ride out of the community IF we were evacuated? Do you know someone who might need a ride?
Please call the Village office in advance at 250.679.3238 Ext. 225 or email eoc@chasebc.ca with the name, phone number and address of the person needing assistance. The Village has arranged for bus transportation IF needed.
The Chase & District Museum and Archives Society would like to thank the citizens of Chase for supporting our corn sales at Cornstalk.
Sales were low this year but, thanks to the following donations, the Museum still made a decent amount of money.
Donations received:
Corn - Burkholders Bros, Pete Murray's Market, ISCU, David Lepsoe and Barb Lepsoe
Butter - Safety Mart
Wrappers - S Dickson
Thanks to the Chase Excellence Program's donation of $200.00 we were able to purchase 2 propane tanks from Chase Home Hardware.
We also purchased 2 corn pots and stands from Chase Home Hardware using money from another grant we received.
We donated all of the left over shucked corn to the Kamloops Food Bank (Chase Food Bank had a lot of corn already).
Without the support of our community and local businesses the Museum would not be able to stay open year round.
