It stands ghostly in the dusk Centre of a well-ploughed field Metal turned to rust Vines grown on stone at will Its past completely turned to dust Belfry now without a bell Its vacant windows staring So quiet, so lonely Locks and boards it is wearing What are the stories it could tell? Much happened in this sacred place People sang and prayed and cried The Book, The Word, the ritual For those newborn, those who died Past, just bricks and mortar remain Walls rise in silent testament To lives and ceremony gone Is there a sound, murmured keening? Spirits here for one last song? For those who’ve left?—a sacrament

Classifieds Obituary Joseph R aym ond Porl ier June1/1935 - August15/2017

Joseph Raymond Porlier 82 passed away peacefully at Overlander Extended Care facility in Kamloops BC on August 15th, 2017. Raymond is survived by his wife of 21 years Thelma Porlier, sons David(Colleen) Porlier, Mark (Shelly) Porlier, Stephen, daughter Teresa (Shane) LeBeau and stepchildren (Erika, and Stephen). He has numerous nieces and nephews, and his favourites the grandchildren. Raymond was predeceased by his brother Lenny, sister Eunice ,3 step sisters and his parents Henry and Alice Porlier. Born in Saskatchewan on June 1st, 1935 Raymond was 5 when the family moved to a homestead in Bear Creek B.C and later to the farm in Chase Creek. Farming, hunting, creek fishing were of his fondest memories. Tromping by foot up to the little country school in Chase Creek and then up and down the switchbacks to attend school in Chase. Pranks, fun, and frolic ensued; until in 1956 Raymond joined the Canadian Armed Forces. Returning home from service in 1959 he married Ella Saxton and 4 children followed to keep them busy. Raymond dabbled in the forest sector until he was early diagnosed with MS, which left him struggling to stay active. After Ella’s death Raymond rallied and enjoyed visiting local coffee shops where his laughter could be heard daily in his favorite place “ the streets of Chase”. Raymond met his current wife Thelma in Chase when she had moved west from Ontario. The family was blessed to have her kind, caring, organized, happy outlook on life join Raymond and continue to live in Chase. Camping, family, friends, and his Catholic Church gave him many hours of pleasure. With a slow deterioration of health and onset of Alzheimer’s Ray was moved into Overlander Residential Care where nurses and doctors gave him outstanding care even in difficult times. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all involved with his care, to his friends of Chase who always asked about him, and to Father Paul and Nuns. A graveside service will be held in Chase on Friday August 25 at 3:00 pm at the Chase Cemetery. Ray will then be at peace in his favourite place Chase BC.

A new sidewalk in Chase along Alymer Road was completed last week, paid for by a developer whose proposed development is a 76 lot strata residential subdivision in the vacant land where the old ball diamonds were between third avenue and Garrick Automotive. The developer, called Chase DevCo, have done the sidewalk and other infrastructure works (sewer, water, curb, gutter, streetlights and paving) down on Alymer Road at their cost as part of requirements by the municipality. “As with any developments that occur in communities in BC, there are aspects that the local government requires of the developer – these are outlined

in a subdivision and development bylaw and in development standards and guidelines,” explained Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase’s Chief Administrative Officer. One of the requirements for developments is to not only install sewer, water, electricity etc services for the property that is to be developed, but road works, sidewalks, curbs and gutters (storm drainage) and street lights are typically required of local governments when subdivisions occur. “This can be seen in various locations in Chase, where a subdivision occurred in the past and sidewalks were installed, street lights, road works were done, all paid for by the developer of the adjacent properties,” said

Heinrich. ChaseDevCo also intends to develop lands they own close to the river at the end of Aylmer towards Chase Creek. When those lands are developed, road improvements, and other servicing will be required of the developer.
