YOUTH CHAMBER PLANNING RIVER FLOAT ALL CANDIDATES FORUM ON SATURDAY With the local election approaching
T
he Youth Action Committee is inviting teenagers in the community to enjoy one more hurrah before summer ends, with a fun float down the river on Saturday, August 25th. The float begins at Mill Park and ends at VLA Road, where transportation will bring everyone back to Memorial Park at about 4 pm for a BBQ and the music of Eargazm (husband and wife DJ duo Tyler and Kristi LaCroix, who are also part of the volunteers making sure everything on the river goes smoothly). The float is open to ages 12 - 18 but a parent waiver form must be completed before the float. The forms can be found at Miller’s Cabin in downtown Chase. Contact Terri at 250-819-0428 or Kelsey at 250-679-8880 for more information.

Please consider what you would like to hear candidates speak on and email your questions to CandidatesForumChase@gmail.com or mail to PO Box 524, Chase BC, V0E 1M0. Birds in BC tested positive for West Nile virus submitted by Interior Health
The provincial Animal Health Centre lab has confirmed two dead ravens submitted from Kimberley as part of routine surveillance have tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first evidence of West Nile virus activity in the province this year. To date, there have no human cases reported, no positive mosquito pools identified, and no positives identified by Canadian Blood Services through their screening program. Interior Health works closely with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control and
Canadian Blood Services to monitor West Nile virus activity. Surveillance includes screening the blood supply and reporting human and animal cases. The risk of infection from handling birds is very low; however, you should not use your bare hands to handle wild birds (dead or alive). If you need to move a dead bird precautions should be taken. Unusual clusters of dead birds can be reported to the BC Interagency Wild Bird Mortality Investigation at 1-866-431-BIRD (2473). More on page 5...

Filling: ¼ cup organic cane sugar 2 tsp cinnamon ¼ cup butter Instructions Dissolve yeast in warm water, stir
in milk (cooled first), sugar, salt, beaten eggs, butter, and 2-½ cups flour. Beat until smooth, add remaining flour to make it easy to handle. Turn dough out on to a kneading board and knead about five minutes. Place into an oiled bowl and let rise about 1-½ hours. Punch down; roll into a nice big rectangle. Melt ¼ cup of butter and sprinkle cinnamon/ sugar (I always wing it here and probably add more than that) roll up and cut into cinnamon rolls. Let rise 30 minutes and bake @ 375 for 25-30 min.

by Tyler Harper
I feel that I must open this column with an apology, some of you might have noticed that my Pastoral Perspective didn’t grace the pages of an edition of the Sunflower in July. This absence occurred because just as I was about to send off my monthly column for the end of July my wife let me know she was going into labor and so the list of things I wanted to accomplish before we welcomed our newest family member, including an article, got put on hold. As I said we welcomed our daughter into the world on July 25th and there is something awe-inspiring about holding a brand-new baby. Thoughts rushed through my head: wondering who she would be? I wondering what her passions and personality would be? And then there is the amazing feeling of love that one experiences as they hold their child or grandchild for the first time, a love that is bigger than we are, a love that pushes you beyond yourself. Becoming a parent is an exciting experience, but it is also a scary experience. Alongside of all those warm feelings of love and bonding is also worries and stresses. There are the worries about providing food and shelter, meeting basic needs. But there are also less tangible things to worry about as a parent. How will this little life get along in this world? Is this even a world that we want to bring children into?
Computer Support
I was reminded of these stresses as I held my new daughter and looked out the window of our hospital room to see smoke from surrounding forest fires drift into the city and smother what was a beautiful day. We turn on the T.V. and pick up the paper and we hear of scary things. Life doesn’t seem as predictable as it once was. We hear of wars and cyberattacks. It seems like the rich and powerful are getting away with more and more while others get by with less and less. Welcoming a new life is a scary thing. But I had to remind myself of something as I watched that smoke role in that this life is not all that there is, that there is hope. This little life is a reflection, a symbol, that life isn’t just what we can see, that there is another part of the story and that part includes justice and healing where there is now injustice and pain. When life is only one day at a time it can seem pretty hopeless, but when keep eternity in sight, hope isn’t just a possibility— it a natural reaction. When eternity is in view, children can be a sign of our hope that things just won’t get better, but that the world and all that we know will one day be re-born, re-created, just the way it was meant to be. This is the hope of being a new parent. This is the hope that I cling to on those sleepless nights. Is summer school break over already? Submitted by Barbara Maher, Literacy Outreach Coordinator, in Chase literacyinchase@gmail.com
September means schools will soon be opening their doors. September is also Literacy Month. The Village of Chase will be raising the LITERACY FLAG to show support for literacy programs in the area. You can expect to read more about programs, services and initiatives in the community. Follow us on Facebook! Look for Chase Literacy Program to find out more about programs and events. WHAT IS LITERACY? We are all familiar with the word “literacy” as it applies to reading and comprehension. But recently you will have heard the word combined with other words, for example, Physical Literacy, Digital Literacy, Media Literacy, Financial Literacy and of course, Foundational
Literacy to name a few. As the concept of literacy expands so too does the role of the Literacy programs in our communities. Community Coordinators are developing programs and services to meet the growing challenges facing the population. This fall we will be introducing a ‘walking program’ and an ‘elder wisdom program.’ We are also bringing back ‘Senior computer classes.’ On a shoe string budget and funded by the money raised by events like the Rotary G o l f

Tournament and Raise a Reader Day, Chase Literacy seeks to help Chase and area citizens confidently tackle the challenges of living in a changing world. Mark your calendar- our annual fundraising event, Raise a Reader September 26th. Help us to help the community. Donations receive some matching government funds and ALL funds stay in the community.
