September is Literacy Month! We invite you to donate to our annual Raise-a-Reader campaign. Your donation allows us to work together to find innovative approaches to improve literacy skills for all ages in our community. In addition, your donation will be eligible for a percentage of matching funds from the Province of BC. Last year we received 80% in matching funds. Raise-a-Reader boosts awareness about the importance of literacy and raises much needed funds for local literacy programs. 100% of the money you contribute directly supports programs, in Chase, like Parent Child Mother Goose, One to One Children’s Literacy, Bright Red Bookshelves and more. We are proud to participate in this national Postmedia initiative. This year due to Covid-19 and the ongoing fires we will not be having our in-person fundraising campaign on Wednesday, September 22nd. Instead: We are running an online
submitted by Chase Literacy Group campaign from September 17th to 24th, 2021. Online donations can be made at https://www.canadahelps.org/ en/dn/42475 a charitable tax receipt will be issued. Classifieds Obituary Agnes (Nancy) Cavers January 27, 1938 to August 12, 2021
With sad hearts we announce the passing of Nancy Cavers. Mom was born in Dunoon Scotland the oldest of 3 children to Rebecca and William Carmichael. At age 17, mom and her best friend ventured by ship across the Ocean to Vancouver, Canada. Mom worked at Granville Island in Vancouver for several years. She eventually met her future husband Jim at the local bowling alley and after several years of courting they were married in 1962. They had two children, Anne-Marie and Jimmy and in 1972 they moved to Celista and bought Shadow Valley Ranch where they lived until 2006. Mom loved the farm, gardening and the animals were her passion. She was very active in the community, volunteering at the school and busy in her faith. Eventually mom and dad needed to downsize and they bought a home in Chase in 2006 where mom lived until her passing. Mom was a feisty wee Scottish Lady with a quick sense of humor. She had a caring and generous heart and loved all of her good friends. Her dogs were her world and they gave mom much love and enjoyment over the years. Mom was very proud of her Scottish heritage, she had tartan all over her home along with her love of leopard print clothes, purses and décor. When out for a meal, Chicken Wings were her favorite and we always teased her about how unhealthy they were, she’d say “I don’t care, I Like them.” Mom had a strong faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the knowledge of being resurrected into a better world was a hope that she kept in her heart up until she passed. Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim and her son Jimmy, also by her parents, William and Rebecca and her siblings, John and Charlie. She is survived by her daughter Anne-Marie (Ian) and her dear grandchildren, Ryan, Aaron, Christopher, Justin and Chantal. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Redel, and Chase Home Care Nurses, who gave mom wonderful care. Also, the First Responders and Ambulance Attendants, who were so kind and compassionate on the night mom passed. Mom will be laid to rest next to her husband and son at the Chase Cemetery.

South Shuswap Chamber Lobbies to Support Businesses and Frontline Workers Amid the Vaccine Passport
Blind Bay BC – The South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce is advocating to ensure businesses stay open during this pandemic by utilizing every tool possible. While implementing a proof of vaccination passport by the Provincial government may be one tool that is being considered, the responsibility and monitoring of such a program cannot land on business owners. “While it may make sense to see the wearing of masks returned temporarily or for the rollout of a vaccine passport program, it simply cannot be left to frontline staff to enforce these policies,” said Chamber President, Lynn Ewart. “Employers have struggled through this pandemic for over a year-and-a-half.” Ewart continues, “A massive labour shortage is challenging our business owners to find and retain staff. Now the Province is asking business owners and their frontline staff to enforce this mandate. It’s simply too much to ask of them.” South Shuswap Chamber Executive Director Karen Brown adds, “During the past 18 months, our businesses have fought through this pandemic to keep their doors open. Staff shortages remain an issue. This year we add to those hardships, the relentless wildfire situation, the smoke, the misleading media coverage and now, as the province tries to get ahead of this pandemic, the return of these restrictions including a provincial advisory not to travel to our region. Our businesses are struggling to cope and we are trying to understand how the frontline staff are going to manage this and what tools, if any, they will be given to do so.” The South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with its regional partners and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, the Tourism Industry Association of British Columbia, and the BC Chamber of Commerce to advocate at the provincial level for reasonable and effective implementation of plans moving forward. In the words of the BC Chamber CEO Fiona Famulak, “It is incumbent on government to work with us on the program details to ensure it is fair, effective and prioritizes the safety of the business owners, employees and workers responsible for program enforcement.”
