Sunshore Golf Course celebrates 50th anniversary of the first tournament
O
By David Lepsoe & Elena Markin
n Saturday August 22, 2020, 8 people celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the first golf tournament at Sunshore Golf course. Scott Koch represented the good showing by both his parents. In honour of his dad – Bob Koch, Scott used some of his dad’s golf balls. With COVID care procedures in place, Scott, Bob Esdale, Larry Barton, Trevor Smith, Ron Anderson, Camellia Semple, David Lepsoe and Elena Markin played 9 holes in honour of the tournament 50 years ago. The golf tournament was held on August 22nd and 23rd, 1970. About 70 golfers took part in the two-day event. Scott Koch‘s mom and dad both placed well in the
MLS#158074
tournament. Trevor Smith’s grandfather - George Hysop, sold his ranch to make way for the golf course. Larry Barton’s parents, together with few other partners, owned the golf course at the time. Afterwards, Larry and his wife were the owners for many years. Bob Esdale, who used to teach in Chase, won many tournaments back in the day. Everyone enjoyed the nine holes of golf and then reminiscing about the old times afterwards.

A MOMENT OF HISTORY submitted by Dick Hermann, Chase and Area Museum and Archives
On the hillside just to the southwest of Chase, close to the intersection of Route 1 and the Chase-Falkland road, there is a remnant of Chase history of which very few people are aware. It is the private burial ground of the Coburn/McBryan families, containing the graves of eight individuals from those families. Alexander McBryan arrived in the area about the same time as Whitfield Chase, and settled in Shuswap in 1869. Alexander married Margaret, the daughter of Wishwa and Chwyle Nicola, Indian Chief at Head of the Lake, in Vernon. The McBryans had eleven children: Philip, Susan, Mary, Alex, Margaret, Ellen, Lulu, John, Eva, Ernest, and Raymond. George Coburn arrived shortly after completion of the railway to Chase in 1884. In 1888 he married Susan McBryan, and over the years they produced seven children: Ethyl, Cecil, Gladys, Mabel, Leslie, Roy, and Hazel. Of the Coburn children, only Mabel is buried in the private plot. Also buried in the plot are: Susan Jennie Coburn, the wife of George Coburn; Florence Coburn, the wife of George’s brother Fred; Susan Elsie Byers; Alexander McBryan; Charlotte McBryan, daughter of Phillip and Etta McBryan; Mary Jane McBryan, daughter of Alexander McBryan. At the moment the burial plot appears to have been forgotten. There is no sign of any maintenance, and the plot is looking very ragged and unkempt. Nevertheless, it represents an important piece of the history of the Chase/Shuswap area, since the Coburn and the McBryan families, and their offspring, made significant contributions to the development of the area. To anyone who has further interest, I would recommend Joyce Dunn’s book titled “A Town Called Chase”, which I have relied on significantly in researching the subject. Her book is filled with interesting
information regarding the history of Chase, Shuswap, and the surrounding area. My interest in this old burial plot was triggered by the work being planned to widen Route 1 where it passes by Chase. I was concerned that the road widening would disturb the old burial plot, but I have been assured that there is no conflict, and that the old plot will be left untouched. In my opinion, it is worth going to have a look at, just to stir up awareness and appreciation of those who contributed so much to the early development of the area. If anyone decides to approach the plot for a closer look, watch out for the strands of rusted old barbed wire lying in the grass, waiting to trip you. Another source of my information has been the Chase Museum. The prime function of the Museum is to recognize, record, and make available to the public the events of significance to the development of the area, and this the Museum does very effectively. The Museum receives support from local businesses, from a number of government grants, from the Village of Chase, and from the citizens of Chase through memberships and volunteer work. The organizations that provide grants look closely at the number of local memberships, which they perceive as the level of local support for the Museum which influences the amount of grant money available. This year the number of local members has been higher than usual, being in the 90’s most of the year. Maybe we can soon get into the three-digit range. I urge everyone to visit the Museum and view the many items on display, and perhaps do a little research of your own. Our new Curator, Breanne Malo, will be pleased to show you around and help you to find any information that you may be interested in.
