he Chase Farm and Craft Market has been running out of the Chase Plaza near Safety Mart each week this summer, and so far the change has been a positive one. “We’ve had more vendors than last year, and it’s hopefully going to keep growing and improving in years to come,” said Joe Lapinsky of Forest Garden Soap, who helps manage the market. There have been a variety of interesting new booths this year in addition to the regular vendors. A food cart from Salmon Arm called Michele’s Dawg Waggin will be attending this Friday’s market. “We had a taste of the first market in Chase on July 28th and totally loved the atmosphere there,” said Michele. The Dawg Waggin serves a breakfast which

High temperatures expected Submitted by Interior Health

Temperatures across British Columbia are expected to hit annual highs this week and next. Too much heat can be harmful to your health and can lead to weakness, disorientation and exhaustion. In severe cases, it can also lead to heat stroke, also known as sunstroke. Heat stroke is a lifethreatening medical emergency. Here are some signs to watch for and suggested tips to keep you safe and healthy. Who is most at risk? · Infants and children up to four years of age who rely on adults to make sure their environments are comfortable and provide them with enough fluids. · People 65 years of age or older who may not compensate for heat stress efficiently and are less likely to sense and respond to high temperatures. · Healthy individuals who do a lot of physical activity or work in a hot environment. · Those with heart problems and breathing difficulties. Symptoms to watch for? The symptoms of heat-related illness can range from mild to severe. They include: · pale, cool, moist skin; heavy sweating; muscle cramps; rash; swelling, especially hands and feet; fatigue and weakness; · dizziness and/or fainting; headache; · nausea and/or vomiting; · fever, particularly a core body temperature of 40° C (104° F) or more; · confusion and decreased mental alertness; · hallucinations; · red, hot, dry skin (in the late stages of heat stroke); · seizures; and · unconsciousness/coma What should a person do if they are experiencing symptoms? When recognized early, most mild heatrelated illnesses can be treated at home. Home treatment for mild heat exhaustion may include:· moving to a cooler environment; · drinking plenty of cool,

non-alcoholic fluids; · resting; · taking a cool shower or bath; and · wearing lightweight clothing If your symptoms last longer than one hour, change, worsen or cause you concern, contact a health-care provider. What steps can people take to avoid heat related illness? · Never leave children alone in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 52° C (125° F) within 20 minutes inside a vehicle when the outside temperature is 34° C (93° F). Leaving the car windows slightly open will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature. · Drink plenty of fluids. Drink extra water even before you feel thirsty. · Keep cool - stay indoors in air-conditioned buildings or take a cool bath or shower. At temperatures above 30° C (86°F), fans alone may not be able to prevent heat-related illness. Remember, sunscreen will protect against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays but not from the heat. · Plan your outdoor activity before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the sun’s Ultra Violet Radiation (UVR) is the weakest. · Avoid tiring work or exercise in hot, humid environments. If you must work or exercise, drink 2 to 4 glasses of nonalcoholic fluids each hour. Rest breaks are important and should be taken in the shade. · Avoid sunburn - use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. · Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loosefitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat, or use an umbrella for shade. · Regularly check older adults, children and others for signs of heat-related illness and make sure they are keeping cool and drinking plenty of fluids. Check on those who are unable to leave their homes, and people with emotional or mental health concerns whose judgment may be impaired.

Obituary MADORE, Darnel Edwina (nee Ball)

We are heartbroken to announce that on July 13, 2017, our dear wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend died in her 75th year at Kamloops Hospice with her children and husband by her side. With optimism and faith she bravely fought her disease, believing that she could conquer her illness with the support of her family. She had remarkable relationships with all who knew her and will be forever missed by the love of her life Ted, son Shawn (Kate Lovering), daughter Leslee, granddaughter Mia Petrtyl, brother Darrell Ball (Shirley) of Vernon, sister Betty Stepputat of Maple Ridge, sister-in-law Karen Madore of Vancouver, brother-in-law Doug Muma of Courtenay, and extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Doris and Ed, sister Ruby Muma and son-in-law Martin Petrtyl. Darnel was born in Vancouver, the youngest of four siblings, and grew up in Chilliwack and Cultus Lake, BC. As a young woman she had a zest for life and travelled across Canada, worked in Montreal, and then she met Ted, who, on their first date, told her he was going to marry her, and he did! They left Vancouver in 1971 to raise their children in Kamloops and for 53 years shared a life filled with laughter, adventure and hard work. Darnel was Ted’s devoted partner in both love and business, and together they owned and operated the Pritchard Store, Westsyde Home Hardware and several other ventures. They were fortunate to retire young and had many friends who joined them in travel, golf and fishing. As per her wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Sincere thanks go to the many exceptional doctors, nurses and staff at RIH who provided all of us with comfort and care. We especially want to acknowledge the extraordinary compassion shown by Dr. Johannes van Heerden, Dr. Miranda du Preez and Dr. Simon Baxter of Kelowna. If you wish, please make a donation to Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home or the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory. Condolences may be sent to the family at DrakeCremation.com

Fostering a Secwepemc sense of place by Jim Cooperman

Words are not enough to do justice to this story. You need to be there and not just once, but regularly so that it becomes a tradition for you. As Secwepemc educator and historian Robert Mathew described, that is what is needed to foster a sense of place, which is the goal of the place name project he and many others have been working on for the past 20 years. We met at Ciyúy7elt, which is the area on both sides of the Adams River that surrounds the Flume Trails on Huihill Creek. Although it was not a village site, Ciyúy7elt was considered good land for camping because it was out of the wind and there was a good supply of wood for cooking and heating, plenty of medicinal plants and many good fishing sites for sockeye and Coho. The project first began as a personal journey for Robert, who after moving to Adams Lake, wanted to become a person of the lake and thus proceeded to learn as much as possible from the elders. Over a span of two decades, he met often with Lawrence and Joe Michel, and travelled throughout the region. Hundreds of audio and video recordings have been made that document Lawrence and Joe’s knowledge of the land. Over 250 place names have been gathered by Chief Atahm School, that have been passed down from generation to generation. The first of eight booklets is now in the process of being published and will be used by both the school and the community to provide a much-needed link to ancient places. Written nearly entirely in the Secwepemctsn language, the first booklet covers Cstélen, the lower section of Adams Lake where there were seven village sites. For each area, there is a description of the site that includes the traditional uses associated with each place. Many of these uses endure, as Secwepemc people continue to utilize the natural resources of the region for food and medicine, as well as for cultural practices. After our brief visit to Ciyúy7elt we headed north to the ancient village site called Tegwúps, where there is a small reserve that was named Toops. The name refers to the sound of water, as this is where the lower

Adams River begins and there are some small rapids below the lake. Tegwúps was known as a good place to forage for roots and berries and for fishing. There are meadows above the lake to the east where families dug avalanche lily roots, however in recent decades, cattle grazing has damaged these sites. On the east side of Tegwúps, Nikwikwaia Creek flows into the Adams River at the northern boundary of Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park. This creek, also known as Gold Creek, flows off of the Adams Plateau. In the booklet, the creek has the ancient name of Nexwenexwéye. The main reserve at Adams Lake was Hustalen and is about half the size of the ancient village site of Tk’méqs. Across the lake, stretching from Tegwúps north to Bush Creek is Wáwelt. The area surrounding Bush Creek is known as Tk’eqíqe. And at Squam Bay, the surrounding area has the ancient name of Sq7em. While the Secwepemctsn oral language is thousands of years old, the written language was not created until 1974, when the Dutch linguist Aert Kulp developed the system that is in use today. The system’s 43 consonants and 5 vowels still do not accurately represent all of the sounds in the language, which has 12 more sounds than are heard in English. The Chief Atahm School language project will eventually include more than the booklets, as there is a plan to add video and audio clips to the school’s website that will be accessed by clicking on a map of the area. The entire project is a team effort that includes Robert and his wife Kathryn Michel, elders Lawrence Michel, Lucy Williams, and Ana Michel plus other experts. It was made possible thanks to the sponsorship from the Adams Lake Band, the Chief Atahm School, the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.names to honour the Secwepemc people who have lived here for over 9,000 years. Shuswap Trail Alliance News CALL OUT FOR HELP PLEASE - if anyone has seen or knows anything about our BRAND NEW white tool box that Sutra just built - that was STOLEN last night (Aug 1) please contact the RCMP. The 6 x 4 x 3 white tool box usually sits in the back of our blue F350. The last few days our crews have been very busy doing clean up in the City of Salmon Arm trails making many daily trips to the dump with debris. The tool box was taken out to give room for this task. It was leaning up by our STA Crew Office under Skookums. By now it may be a different color. Extreme Fire Warning: we remind all trail users that trails in the Shuswap are all within the Extreme Fire Warning area. Absolutely no open fires or campfires. Avoid use of cigarettes. Vehicles should be parked away from flammable vegetation at designated trail heads. Please obey all trail closure notices and check the BC Wildfire report regularly

for updates, and be prepared to evacuate an area quickly. Please report any signs of fire immediately. To report a wildfire call toll-free 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks. And to all Shuswap trail stewards, please remember: absolutely no use of chainsaws or other power equipment to remove dead fall trees or maintain trails is allowed at this time. Please continue to report trees down to trailreport@ shuswaptrails.com, but know that fallen trees will not be removed until the fire ban is lifted. This applies to both in-community and front/backcountry recreational trails throughout the region. Thanks for your patience. Our deepest gratitude to everyone working on monitoring conditions and responding to the fires throughout the province. Please stay safe everyone! 250-832-0102

Word Search - international beer days August 4, 2017 International Beer Day is a global celebration of beer, taking place in pubs, breweries, and backyards all over the world. HOPS FERMENTATION BARLEY RICE CARBONATION BOTTLES CANS TAP DRAUGHT BREW CULTURE YEAST MICROBREW ALE MALT ALCOHOL BITTER LAGER TANNINS TIME CRAFT GROWLER During the early medieval period in Europe, the beer industry was largely run by women called Ale wives, or brewsters. The traditional clothing worn by brewsters is what we now think of as a witches costume. A cat, a pointed hat, a broom and a bubbling cauldron are all pieces of equipment essentially that brewsters used. In the marketplace, they wore highpointed hats in order to stand out in the crowd. For centuries, women enjoyed success and respect as the beer industry’s key drivers. But men who wanted to be more involved in the industry from the 1300s onward, used propaganda to influence perception. Images of brewsters were increasingly associated with witchcraft and evil as a way to force them out.
