An Agri Tradition Continues on the Murray Farm

G

by Kelsey Snelgrove, with editing from Carolyn Parks-Mintz

rabbing a bag of delicious, freshly-picked, locally-grown corn is a summer ‘ritual’ dearly held by many in Chase, and thankfully this agricultural operation will continue in the hands of young farmers, Lewis and Vincent Burkholder, as Peter and Ray Murray scale back their management of their family farmland. Peter, who also was farming in his 20’s, and his wife, Ray, successfully ran their agri-business and corn stand for decades. Under the Murray’s tutelage,

the Burkholder brothers have been busy over the past months planning, seeding, weeding, watering and monitoring the precious crop. “Lewis and I both started working for Pete when we were young teens. Collectively we’ve spent about 15 harvest seasons on this farm,” says Vincent. The brothers who are from the area, had stepped away from Chase to go to school and pursue other work, but returned for the opportunity. Continued on page 3...

Corn Stand Open This Weekend

“Growing local food for the town we grew up in is the most meaningful way to spend our time we can think of.” With Ray’s competent administrative help since 1998, Peter managed their farmland on VLA Road for 40 years. Both have been a valuable resource for the Burkholders in their first year running the operation. “Peter and Ray help us wherever needed. And they will continue to operate their much-loved pumpkin patch and corn maze,” Vincent reports. In addition to sweet corn, the Burkholders also grow potatoes, squash, tomatoes, garlic, carrots and other produce in limited

quantities. They have plans to further diversity the farm in the coming years and offer even more options. The traditional roadside stand on VLA Road will open up this weekend and their delicious produce will also be at the Chase and Kamloops markets. Just now, the brothers are patiently watching the corn, waiting for that perfect ripeness. For all those who have enjoyed the produce from the Murray acreage—now under the dedicated care of the Burkholders—it’s a great succession plan.

Biodiversity Begins at Home submitted by Chase Environmental Group

If you are lucky, you have a yard. Perhaps some shrubs and a shady tree. Maybe you grow your own vegetables or have a prize rose garden. It is exciting to see a package of seeds yield rows of sweet crunchy carrots or a bounty of colourful blooms. It’s like magic! Now, peek under some rocks or leaf litter and you’ll begin to see the abundant diversity of wildlife that is the ecosystem of your yard. Some people consider insects to be vermin. Yes, some bite, some sting, some eatthe food you are growing for yourself. However, many others are helping to create the exact conditions needed to grow healthy vegetables and beautiful blooms. One cannot speak too highly of pollinators and earthworms but little is told of the trillions of other creatures living under your lawn. The soil is the breathing skin of the earth and is highly variable. It can be sandy, rocky, clay or loam, acidic or alkaline. A good productive garden is often the result of a nurturing gardener who feeds the soil by incorporating plenty of organic matter, sometimes in the form of compost. That in itself is a great first step, but the real hard work goes on unseen at the microscopic level. A handful of soil may contain billions of microorganisms; protozoa, algae, nematodes, fungi, bacteria, to name a few. Thousands of species are represented from just about every division of the plant and animal kingdom. They are predators and

prey, producers, consumers, and parasites. It is complicated! Science has begun to reveal some astounding secrets of soil microbes. Simple put, these communities of organisms interact together like a well-tuned choir. They assimilate plant and animal residues and waste to create soil humus and mineral nutrients that are, in turn, available to feed our roses and carrots. We walk all over the soil and quite often treat it like dirt when we should be treating it like gold. Soil the underpinning of life on earth. It is easy to see by looking around how poorly we have taken care of it. We scrape it into piles, pave over it and poison it. We let it blow and flow out to sea. It is high time we protect our soil and convince others not to squander it. So much has already been destroyed and rendered useless as a life-giving substrate. Let us not drip our oil, spill our antifreeze, or decompose our plastic in it. Let us grow trees, weeds, vegetables and lawns, and all without chemical fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides. Let’s cherish the biodiversity in our yards and grow it all organically. Remember, our ancestors practiced organic agriculture for about twenty thousand years proving its success and sustainability.

Garden Talk with Dr. Catherine Tarasoff

Cover Crops- The Unsung Hero for Weed Prevention submitted

It may be hard to believe but August is upon us! After harvests are done we can all relax right? Actually, there is a group of weeds called winter annuals. These weeds germinate in the fall, overwinter as young seedlings, and grow quickly in the spring. You’ve likely noticed how henbit, chickweed and deadnettle seem to flower overnight; these are all examples of winter annuals. Whether you are managing a backyard vegetable garden or a large scale farm, fall cover cropping is a terrific way to provide competition against winter annuals, increase soil organic matter, prevent soil compaction and erosion; they can even fix nitrogen to give next year’s summer crop an added boost! How does cover cropping work? When we leave the soil barren in the fall, through the winter and even into late spring, we provide an open door for wind borne weed seeds to settle and grow unhindered. Planting a fall cover crop will protect the site from weed establishment AND provide a natural fertilizer and food source, the following spring, for all the microorganisms that are so critical for healthy plant growth. Also, barren soil is prone to erosion and soil compaction. When heavy rains occur in the fall and spring, excess water flows over the surface, eroding away the precious soil that took up to 100 years to develop. A cover crop will absorb the impact of rain droplets and allow the water to infiltrate into the soil – building soil moisture reserves for next season. Then, in the spring, when the roots rot, tiny tunnels will form in the soil;
