Moonlight Movie Night submitted by Chase Skate Park Society
The sky threatened rain all day on Monday, August 22nd, but in the end it stayed dry for the Interior Savings Moonlight Movie Night in support of the Chase and District Skate Park Society. Folks turned out with their blankets and chairs to screen the family friendly movie Zootopia in the CSS field. The blankets were important as the temperature became quite brisk as the sun went down.
The funds are still being tallied, but the Skate Park Society would like to thank Interior Savings for the amazing fundraising opportunity and all their help. Thanks also to the Chase Rotary for running a concession, Dale & Doreen Balde for covering the cost of washroom fee. Thank you also to Adams Lake Indian Band, Interfor Adam’s Lake Division for sponsoring.

Roots and Blues: A Rockin’ Review by Cavelle Layes
Those who feed their soul with music are surely feeling refreshed, and possibly a little saddened upon their return home from Salmon Arm on Sunday. After over three days of blues, folk, jazz, rock, country, and even a few DJs, among many other genres, The 24th annual Roots and Blues festival was yet another undoubtable success. The festival organizers once again went above and beyond, stacking the stages with incredible lineups filled with talent, ensuring a wide selection of artistic vendors, hosting a fleet of food trucks that would have any foodie drooling, and providing an army of volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the best experience possible. The festival has become known for their ability to find new artists each year, ensuring every festival experience is unique. The performers this year were only those who displayed top talent, including those who could sing ballads that could make you tear, and hit guitar riffs that would give you chills. Those who managed to pull themselves away from one of the many stages could browse through the unique artwork of vendors from around the province. From creative jewelry and clothes, to boutique style ball caps, skilled leatherwork, and a steampunk booth that would captivate almost any crowd with the intrinsic detail, festival-goers were not let down. Items such as the pocket watches, and expertly crafted wooden furniture would be a hard find anywhere else. Between dancing, foot tapping and shopping, those planning to make it through the weekend would find it difficult to do so without stopping at one of the many food trucks to refuel. Whether your taste buds prefer Greek, Thai, Afghan, or French cuisine there
was something there to cater to you, and with most meals only costing $10, there was not much stopping you from trying one of the many other choices, including gourmet poutine, frozen yogurt, crepes, tacos, samosas, vegan, or even some specialty coffees among others. It wasn’t just the artists and vendors who provided entertainment however. As the sky darkened at night, a new kind of magic came into play. The festival had an almost whimsical feel as festival-goers brought out their own talents, juggling glowing balls, or doing seamless tricks with glowing hula-hoops. A look to the left would show a woman riding a bicycle lit up like something from a movie, her wheels glowing brightly into the distance, and on the right, a golf cart decked out in Christmas lights, complete with a disco ball, acted as a traveling party on wheels. There were fields upon fields of people dancing and swaying to the music, some long-time fans singing along to every word, others who had just found a new favorite. From 10 a.m. until midnight, bands rocked their designated stages. Amy Helm showed that her father was not the only one in the family with the power of song, though she did bring the drums he played at Woodstock along with her. Locarno, a band from Vancouver who seems much better suited for the beaches of Mexico, showcased their Latin-style and had their crowds dancing. Matt Anderson flew in from L.A. for his show Sunday evening, taking the time to join a few other bands in a workshop entitled ‘Lightening in a Bottle’ earlier in the day. Unlike most of the other bands, he did not have backup guitars, a bassist, or even a drummer, instead Anderson proved that all he needed was himself. Continued on page 5...

Roots & Blues
Continued from page 4...
Anderson engaged his audience from beginning to end, bestowing some laughs, telling a few stories, but most importantly gracing everyone with his powerhouse voice that was delicately laced with layers of soul. Anderson’s guitar abilities were a treat on its own, with skills that could rival some of the greats. Anderson sang a number of songs off his new album, Honest Man, which released earlier this year and was named as a topfive most downloaded on soundscan shortly after, along with the likes of Adele, and Macklemore and Lewis, as well as a few passed favorites. Anderson didn’t require the extra bells and whistles, as his personality paired with pure skill were enough to have the large crowd singing along with him. As his last song was half-way started, Anderson’s guitar string broke, but
without skipping a beat, the performer continued on, playing with expert precision on five strings rather than six. The crowd would not have known the difference. Anderson promised he would return to the area again, before attempting to leave the stage, only to be called back for one more song, and of course, he gratefully obliged. As the festival ended for another year, and the crowds slowly filed out the gates, many murmurs could be heard as to what the 25th anniversary of the ever-growing festival would hold. The next event is already in the works, and a reminder is given that every event requires the help of many volunteers. Those who would like information on how to get involved can contact the festival organizers through rootsandblues.ca.
Sewer Treatment Plant Upgrades submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO “The Village’s sewer treatment plant which consists of two lagoons that perform initial breakdown of the raw sewage collected through pipes that run throughout the town, and several rapid infiltration basins which are in essence ‘slow percolators’ of treated waste water, is in need of an upgrade. We were very fortunate to get funding from the Provincial and Federal governments last year for this upgrade. The upgrade includes the installation of bypass piping (Phase I) so the two lagoons can work independently of one another, and Phase II which is the cleaning out (desludging - isn’t that a great word, sludge?) of the two lagoons, and the installation of new aeration systems in each lagoon (you could call them bubblers) that aerate, or provide oxygen to the raw sewage, helping the good bacteria work to break down the organic matter. Other aspects of the project (Phase II) include the provision of a building with electronics and pumps inside, as well as some screens and a mascerator which chews up the larger things that end up being put
into people’s toilets that shouldn’t (e.g. rags, toys, other household items that should be put into the garbage).... Phase I has been completed. Phase II needs to be tendered out (that is, we will be asking for cost and timing submissions from contractors that can do the necessary works). Unfortunately, with costs of things always increasing (whether we like it or not) and the Canadian Dollar being quite low in relation to the US dollar (we get most of the components for these types of projects from the US because they are not manufactured in Canada) our costs for Phase II will be a lot higher than what was originally estimated. To mitigate this problem, we will be asking contractors to give us prices on each component of the project, so we will be able to pick some of the works to be done now and wait on other aspects until more funding is available. More information will come out to the public once we receive tender submssions. For more information please contact the Village Office at 250-679-3238.”

Beloved Pets Who Enrich Our Lives A Tribute, originally written in 2006 by Carolyn Parks Mintz. Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer
The house is strangely quiet, even though the faithful roommate I shared my space with had slept a lot lately. The day before I’d had to say an emotional goodbye to the beautiful blue-eyed Siamese cat who’d been part of my life for 17 years. Channa, which means “little girl” in Cambodian, joined us when we were a family of young children, of busy schedules and travel. She took it all in stride and found her place and space within the h ou s e h ol d — e ve n happily camping in the motorhome in the mountains during fun-filled summers. As years passed and the family dimished in size, Channa became my family. And when I decided to return to Ontario, she stoically made the long trek east, enduring four days on the road and in hotels—as well as the ferry ride from Manitoulin Island to Tobermory, during which she quietly lay in her travel case while I had breakfast in the dining lounge. I came to refer to her as “Channa, The Wonder Cat.” Siamese and Burmese cats are breeds with unusual characteristics, which can include retrieving toys, “talking” (you have to learn their language, of course), and greeting any and all guests to the house. I’m sure she would think to herself, “If I look cute enough, they’ll pet me.” And invariably, visitors had to stroke her silken head and speak to her. The Welcoming Committee Kitty had done it again. It’s no wonder that Siamese cats were once useful as a Distant Early Warning system in the palaces of Siam. Any strange noise or movement around our
house would put my resident guard cat instantly on the alert. Asian felines are “people” cats, more like dogs than cats (don’t tell her I said that!). They want to be with you. As a writer, often I had to literally work around Channa who would lie amongst my papers when I was at the computer. In fact, I’m sure the clicking of the keyboard was a signal for her to come seeking attention. Have you ever tried to input with a cat climbing onto your lap? A phone conversation usually included Her Sleekness curling up close beside me. Wrapping paper, bags and ribbons were an open invitation to get into the thick of it. She was helping, don’tcha know? It’s true that pets bring something special to families and singles alike. We do not “own” our pets, but rather we agree to share our lives with them, and we invariably love them. It has been clinically proven that pets reduce blood pressure, ease tension, and lift depression. Years ago when I was recovering from surgery for a life-threatening disease, Channa rarely left my side. Her presence, the warmth of her small body, her soft purring was soothing and comforting. Healing can take many forms. Wise Mother Theresa once settled a dispute amongst monks who were debating whether penguins had souls. “Give them souls,” she said, “but little ones.” And so my Channa is gone, but her little soul is not. Pets are ours for life and the memory of them is forever. Rest in peace, wonderful Wonder Cat.
Carolyn Parks Mintz is new to Chase, having relocated with her husband, James, to our charming community this summer.

As September approaches, and bears begin to forage before fall hibernation, it is important that all ripe fruit is picked from trees and gardens, and household garbage bins are kept in a garage or shed until pick-up day.
Taking these basic steps will reduce the number of bears that come in contact with people and pets, and lessen the number of habituated bears that need to be destroyed.

It’s here, it’s here! The happiest time of the year! That’s right, it’s Registration Week at Village Lanes! We have missed everyone so much over the Summer, and slowly seeing everyone saunter into the lanes has been an excellent change of pace! Don’t forget to join us on Sunday for our Youth Registration, and on Monday for our Club 55+ Registration! Now, seeing as how we have been a little under the radar lately, a few of you may be unaware that we just held one of our f av o u r i t e (yet most gruelling) events! The 24 Hour Bowl-A-Thon was held this past weekend at the lanes, and yes, it is exactly what is sounds like! We had 22 people from all over BC join us for a full 24 hours of bowling! Monies were raised and we are very happy to announce that Muscular Dystrophy Canada will be receiving a very
generous donation! The event was full of exciting moments, but there was one particular moment that was a little more exciting than the rest! On Saturday evening, Kevin McAlpine, a talented bowler who joined us from Williams Lake threw the first ever 400 game in the three year history of Village Lanes! Kevin threw eleven strikes in a row, and on his last shot, just missed the pocket, getting a chop-off and leaving five points remaining on the deck. For t h o s e of you who are u n aw are, a Perfect Game in five pin bowling is a 450, and Kevin was almost perfect with a personal best score of a 445. Congratulations to Kevin, and to the rest of the bowlers who participated in this years event. Here’s to many 400 games being bowled in the 2016/2017 season! Cheers everyone, and we will see you at registration!
Musuem News
The Museum would like to thank the Murrays and the Cornstock planning committee for donating the funds raised by the sale of hot buttered corn to us. We are so grateful for the support of this community, without it we could not exist as the keeper of Chase and District’s rich history. The museum has been
designated as a Pokemon gym. We welcome the Pokemon players to stop in and enjoy their game. Our photo archives have now been completely digitized. We have a computer set up specifically for the public to search the photos themselves. Stop by and say hello, hunt a Pokemon or just browse.
