Mayor Not Running for Re-Election
I
From the desk of Mayor Rick Berrigan
moved my family to Chase in 1997 because we liked the size of the community and the natural beauty that we are so lucky to enjoy. Soon after getting settled in to the community, I joined the Volunteer Fire Department and served twelve years, the last six of which as Fire Chief. I then served six years on Village Council as Councillor, which led me to being elected as your Mayor in 2014. Along with being Mayor, I also sat on the board of the TNRD as a director for the Village of Chase. After ten years on Council I, along with my family, have decided that I will

complete my duties as Mayor until the upcoming election in October but will not be seeking re-election. I consider it a great honour to have been elected to these positions, and wish my successor the very best. I am confident good candidates will step up to replace me as Mayor, and a slate of candidates will vie for the council seats. It is very fulfilling opportunity to become involved in the decision making for the good of the community. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in my efforts to guide the community and wish each and every one of you all the best.

Thank you from Pawprints Animal Rescue submitted
Pawprints Animal Rescue sincerely thanks everyone who donated refundable cans and bottles for Panda the cat's surgery costs - he needs his right front leg amputated due to a serious injury that was never properly addressed by his former owner. While we don't have a complete tally yet, we are confident that with everyone's generosity the costs for the surgery will
be fully covered. Surgery occurs July 12. A special thank you to Don and Diane MacDonald and Bev Iglesias for their very hard work on bottle drive day! And we would be remiss for not thanking Bev Iglesias directly for baking saskatoon berry pies that generated $400 towards Panda's surgery costs. Thank you Bev! And again to Don and Diane MacDonald for picking the berries!

NimbleFingers: a unique local festival
NimbleFingers is a family friendly music-lovers’ festival with two separate stages showcasing an international lineup of stellar old-time and bluegrass acts. Bookended by two week-long music workshops, the festival draws upon the incredible talent of their world class faculty. This year NimbleFingers is thrilled to welcome the powerful vocals of NimbleFingers favourite The Greg Blake Band, the emotive oldtime songs of Toronto-based The Lonesome Ace Stringband, and the classic bluegrass sounds of The Special Consensus. Southern US band The Bucking Mules are classic Old-Time, and twins Greg and Jere - The Canotes - bring brotherly harmonies and sweet family humour to the NimbleFingers Stage. Nomad Jones is ‘kickin’ bluegrass from the Canadian west’, and the modern west coast folk musician Eli West will be here with his band of musical friends. Were happy to welcome, for the first time to our stage, the delightful East Kootenay roots band Redgirl. We’d also like to welcome songbird Jenny Lester, well known songwriter and Berklee faculty member
Mark Simos. Rounding things off with Vancouver Island’s Old Paint Duo and Alberta’s Kayla and Matt Hotte, it’s a day of music you do not want to miss! Sip locally brewed beer from Crannog Ales, Canada’s first organic farmhouse microbrewery, and check out what our other vendors have to offer. You’ll find great food, musical paraphernalia, vintage records, o r i g i n a l letterpress posters, unique handmade j e w e l r y, NimbleFingers T-shirts and a whole lot more! Get creative in the kid’s craft zone, and pick up some ultra-local produce grown by the Sorrento Centre on their organic farm.

Tech Talk: Canned Air Submitted by Stefan Schielke, inTechrity
difluoroethane, triflorouethane and tetrafluoroethane Three large words for something you wouldn’t want in your immediate surroundings. Why are they relevant to the tech world? These are gases found in cans of “compressed air”. The cans are commonly used in our households to remove dust and debris from hard to reach areas, including electronics. The purpose of compressed air is pretty straight forward; we have dust in our electronics and we want to remove them.
However, there are other factors that we should consider including safety to ourselves and our environment. Cans of “compressed air” should be called “Compressed Mixed Gas” since they are not actually made up of just “air.” Material Safety Data Sheets for some gases in these cans state that they should only be used in properly ventilated environments, whilst wearing respirators. The dangers of these gases can include: fire, explosion, asphyxiation, and even death.

The gases in the cans can take a liquid form, which are quite flammable. Sparks from electronics can start fires and release toxic fumes. Compressed gases are susceptible to high temperatures and may result in explosion. The shrapnel from the exploding cans could result in serious injury to people and their surroundings. When the can’s trigger is depressed the “air” that comes out, as well as the cans, becomes quite cold to the touch and leaves a frosty substance. Moisture residue from the frost can short electronics. The temperature of the frosty substance may also cause frostbite to exposed skin. “Deterrents” are added to the cans to discourage people from inhaling the gases to obtain a “high”. However, these deterrents also leave a residue on the electronics they are intended to clean. Even short-term exposure can damage electronic components, resulting in failure. Inhaling the gases can cause respiratory issues, disorientation, and serious injuries to internal organs which could result in death. Some products contain propellants such as Freon, or other toxic compounds. Even in well ventilated areas, the released “air” is in fact ozonedestroying, greenhouse gas. If you require any of your products to be cleaned with pressured air, I recommend using dry compressed air from an air compressor. An example would be a compressor used with power tools or to fill vehicle tires. The maximum pressure should be 30 psi, as higher pressures can detach small components. When we consider the potential harms resulting from cans of compressed air, I hope that you agree that these items should not be in our homes, or even in our stores. If you have any questions, contact us on Facebook or Twitter, by email or phone. inTechrity Computer Support • Website Development • Smart Home Installation • Technical Project Management 250-679-7744 (office) www.inTechrity.ca

A little bit of serendipity mixed with abundant talent has played a profoundly significant role in the rapid rise of British Columbia-based country band Me and Mae.! Shawn Meehan, Jacky Mae, Kim Gryba, Adam Reid, and Ben Parker, together under the band “Me and Mae”, have forged a reputation as the one to watch on the Canadian country music scene. The band’s debut album Off the Rails will be released via Cordova Bay Records on May 13th! It all started with a song called Love Me Leave Me Lonely, which Meehan co-wrote with Carly Rae Jepsen, who at the time was a guitar student of his. Love Me, Leave Me Lonely was the first song they recorded and the first single they released off the album.! What Cha Wearin’ is a sassy, sexy romp of a song that examines the first flushes and blushes of a new romance, but with a 21st century twist, referencing the flirty text messages that often accompany a new relationship. This recently released single is a shining representation of the band’s very focused and independent spirit. Besides the sauciness of the subject matter, What Cha Wearin’ is also an example of Me and Mae’s ability to write songs that feature memorable vocal and melodic hooks. They blend a variety of styles to create an original sound that is cutting edge and current. Tailgate Party is a foot-stomping party anthem and hallmark of Me and Mae’s unique slant on songwriting! The band also decided to record covers of two popular country music hits for inclusion on the album, putting their own spin on the Johnny Cash classic Ring of Fire as well as Dolly Parton’s peppy 9 to 5!
With momentum, talent and timing on their side, Me and Mae is poised to win over legions of fans looking for good, homegrown country music with a rock and roll sensibility and an ability to make folks want to dance, sing and perhaps even indulge in some enthusiastic texting. So come on down and hang out with Me and Mae for a night for some summer fun, Country Music and community gathering at Memorial Park. Don’t forget your swim trunks, the Lion’s Splash Pad will be open! The Rotary Food Truck, Lions Club Concession, Mini Donuts plus Fox Star Bannock will be on site for the entire series and the beer gardens are open again ready to serve you with ice cold beer at 6:30 pm every night!
