Exciting News for Chase Hamper Society submitted
I
n March 2017, the provincial government announced it was giving Food Banks BC $10 million to develop a food recovery program that would ensure the proper transportation and refrigeration of perishable food items like fresh produce, dairy and meat. $6.5 million will go towards transportation needs and $3.5 million will go to refrigeration at food banks across the province. The Chase Hamper Society is excited to announce that through the grant process our food bank has been granted two substantial Food Banks BC Perishable Food Refrigeration Grants of $15,000.00 and $92,516.00 to implement a food recovery program in our community! Throughout the year our volunteers have been redistributing food such as
a variety of fruit and vegetables from local community gardeners and farmers. Dairy and meat products which are deemed “unsalable” by the local stores for a number of reasons but still all perfectly fit for consumption. The Chase Hamper Society has purchased refrigeration equipment and food recovery equipment to be able to provide our clients with sustainable healthy nutritional food. We would like to thank Food Banks BC for making this possible for our community and all food banks in B.C. The Chase Hamper Society invites you to come and visit our new Chase Food Bank. Tuesday November 27th, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We are located in the basement of the Chase Community Hall. “We are here to provide infrastructure to our community”

Obituary
Jean Lindsay
September 5, 1952 – November 11, 2018 Wendy lost her battle with cancer on Remembrance Day with family by her side, she fought hard but it was not to be. Wendy worked for the RCMP for 36 years and always felt they were her 2nd family. She thought upon retirement she would have time to garden, visit with family, and drink her wine. Wendy was well taken care of by the Nurses and Doctors at Royal Inland Hospital and Overlander Care Facility. We would like to thank all, and her friends who came to visit. You all blessed her days. She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Emily McEachen and her nephew Chris Mackie. Wendy leaves her loving and dedicated sisters, Bev Mackie and Kathy (Wayne) Tanemura; her nephews, Ken, Jarrett, Steven, Mark and their families. The family plans an informal gathering in the spring, date and time will be announced later. Interment will be with her parents in the Chase Cemetery. On line condolences may be sent to Wendy’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com Arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium, Salmon Arm.
August 14, 1938 - October 26, 2018 Jean was born in Carluke, Scotland, spending her early years there and arriving in BC as a young teacher in 1962. She became a long-time resident of Chase. She was a memorable and creative teacher committed to education. Her quick wit and a robust sense of humour made her well-liked by students and colleagues and the community at large. Her radiant smile and wide range of interests also found her many friends in BC and abroad. While Jean was a very private person in some respects, she thoroughly enjoyed social activities and entertaining company. Visitors who stayed in the summers dined on fresh vegetables from her garden, while relaxing in her comfortable home. Jean enjoyed growing flowers and filled both home and garden with perennials and annuals. While loving her new home, she never lost her love for the country of her birth. Her ashes will be interred in the family plot in Scotland. Jen requested there be no service or memorial when she died. Rest in peace, Jean. You are greatly missed.

The Foundation greatly appreciates the cash donations that many residents made at the refreshment table. As people enjoyed their short refreshment break, many visited the on site displays and discussed the specific services available through Chase and District Health Services Foundation. A handout was provided which helped explain the purpose of the Foundation and gave an overview of the recent purchases it has made for the Chase Health Center. Attendees also had an opportunity to learn more about the BC Emergency Health Services - Community Paramedicine Program with local Paramedic Susan Murray. A big thank you went out to the Chase Heat Hockey Team Members who helped set up tables, chairs and assisted in the break down / clean up at the end of the afternoon. Checking Out the Chase Library submitted by Andy Finnen, Branch Head, Chase Library
One of my favourite things to do for patrons, is solve a mystery. Questions like, “I saw this purple book (pointing) over there last month and I would love to borrow it,” or “when I was five years old my Mom read me a story with a mouse and a little boy on the cover, do you know the one?” It’s always a hoot trying to figure out what you are asking for and it’s even more exciting to find the book! So, if you need help finding something, let us know. We happily accept the challenge and will do our best to help you. Fun tidbits about the library that you may not know: We have approximately 15,000 items available to borrow in our branch, but are part of a larger library system, which circulates about one million items every year!

Christmassupplied and Business Christmas and business are linked in so many ways. Christmas is about connecting with the people around us, giving thanks, and celebrating. But, the business world has shaped some of our best loved Christmas traditions over the years. Here are a few fascinating insights on how business entrepreneurs have made their mark on Christmas. Santa Most people can agree on what Santa Claus looks like — jolly, with a red suit and a white beard. In 1930 a famous cola manufacturer decided to use the image of Santa Claus in its winter advertising campaign and chose the cola’s colours red and white for his image. When the campaign was over, Santa’s image in a red had become popular all over the world. Christmas Trees Decorated trees are major part of our Christmas festivities. The custom of having a Christmas tree in the home came from Germany. The person responsible for Christmas trees becoming popular in the UK was Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, when he allowed a picture to be printed in the press of the Royal Family gathered round their Christmas tree. Then everybody in the UK wanted one! Now, over 100,000 people are employed in the Christmas tree industry. In 2011, more than 30 million live Christmas trees were purchased in the United States alone with a market value of some $1.5 billion. Also 9.5 million artificial trees were purchased which adds to the value of the Christmas tree business. Rudolph The red-nosed reindeer was born in 1939 for the American retail enterprise Montgomery Ward. The company created the reindeer Christmas story to give
to customers during the holiday season as a promotion for their stores. Cookie Do you know that the most popular cookie kids leave for Santa is the Oreo? Maybe that’s because over 9.1 billion of them are sold each year. There is no exact date recorded but the idea of leaving cookies for Santa started sometime in the 1930’s. Naughty kids use them to bribe Santa at the last minute and nice kids use them as a way of thanking him for all his hard work on Christmas Eve. Christmas Cards The earliest known designer of a Christmas card was Sir Henry Cole, the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The industrialisation of the printing industry in 1840 led to the popularity of sending Christmas cards and since then, Christmas cards have evolved into a major holiday industry. Crackers The Christmas cracker is really a testament to one man’s ingenuity and determination. Tom Smith was a confectioner’s apprentice in London in the early 19th century. In Paris he admired the French sugared almond bon-bons, wrapped in coloured tissue paper, and decided to introduce them in London. For seven years he worked to develop the bon-bon into something more exciting, until eventually, after watching his log fire crackle, he imagined a bon-bon with a pop. He made a coloured paper wrapper and put in it another strip of paper impregnated with chemicals which, when rubbed, created enough friction to produce a noise. He knew that bangs excited children and the mottoes and poems he inserted inside the crackers amused adults.

THE VOLUNTEERS by Kelsey Snelgrove
Chase Country Christmas comes together every year due to the hard work of a volunteer committee. The group, which varies in size and members year to year has several subcommittees handling different parts of the festivities. From organizing the street vendors, to running the parade, to organizing Santa’s schedule,
there is a lot to be done. If you would like to be a part of this committee in the future, watch for notices in the Sunflower, they meet in the spring and again closer to winter. On behalf of the community, thank you for your contribution to making Chase the festive little Village it is!

RECIPES Easy Holiday Punch Recipe Ingredients: • Cranberry juice or pomegranate cranberry juice • Pineapple juice • Almond extract • Ginger ale • Fresh cranberries and limes (optional) • Ice Pour cranberry juice, pineapple juice, and almond extract into a large drink dispenser and mix. Pour in ginger ale and give it one quick stir. Add in cranberries, ice and ginger ale. Serve within a few hours for best results as it will start to go flat.
Popcorn Balls Ingredients • 7 quarts popped popcorn • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup light corn syrup • 1/4 cup water • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Food coloring, optional Place popcorn in a large baking pan; keep warm in a 200° oven. In a heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, water and salt. Cook over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 235° (soft-ball stage). Remove from the heat. Add
the butter, vanilla and food coloring if desired; stir until butter is melted. Immediately pour over popcorn and stir until evenly coated. When mixture is cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cold water to prevent sticking.
