Food Drive nets 2920 lbs of food + cash submitted by Chase Hamper Society
Wow, you generous, caring, awesome people of Chase have done it again! Give yourselves a huge pat on the back for the monumental effort and results of LJ's Food Drive, and a huge thanks to LJ, Chris and the Snow Angels who drove up and down the streets of Chase, with music and good will, spreading Christmas Cheer to everyone along the way! 2920 pounds of food and $1660 cash were donated last Saturday! Incredible! These donations will all stay in Chase, and keep our shelves full into the New Year! The Chase Food Bank is fortunate to have affiliations with BC Food Banks, Food Banks Canada, and the National Food Share Program. Now that we have our Van again, we are able to take part in Food Share opportunities that come into the Kamloops Food Bank and are dispensed to smaller Food Banks throughout the region. In the past, when available,we have obtained large shipments of eggs, cheese, prepackaged foods, emergency boxes, etc. and chicken, which we have been able to share with community groups and clubs, the schools to help with lunch programs, NS Christmas Hamper group, our local Bands, etc. In fact, LOTS of chicken, which became a community effort as extra freezer space at Chase Creekside Seniors, The Curling Club, the Chase Legion, The Golf Course, and the Arena were needed to store it all! Another freezer is in use now storing 150 pounds of chinook salmon generously shared by the Adams Lake Band! Thank you everyone for your help in making sure no one in Chase needs to go hungry! Our last regular Food Bank Day of the year was Monday, Dec 6, and a new record was set for the number of Food
Hampers given out. There were 39 hampers picked up. Including families, that translates to approx 75 people who will have food on their table. We have found our numbers have increased greatly through the pandemic. Pre-pandemic we would be packing and giving out 1518 food hampers per month, feeding on average 30 people. With the job losses, family distress, business closures etc over the past number of months, we find our numbers are now at about 70 hampers per month, with upwards of 200 people needing a hand up to maintain sustainable food. The volunteers at the Food Bank could not do what we do without the support and generosity of the whole community and surrounding areas! Our donation bins are out all year round and it never ceases to amaze at the amount of food put in them throughout the year! It keeps us going, thank you! The third and final Christmas Registration will be at the Community Hall on Monday, Dec. 13, from 1-3. The Toy Shop will also be open for parents to shop for toys for the children so they all have something from Santa under the tree on Christmas morning! Please note the last day for the Toy Shop will be on Dec. 22, Christmas Hamper pickup day, in case parents have not yet been able to pick up their toys! Please remember to fill the Knitten Mitten Tree at the Credit Union! The toques, mitts, scarves etc., donated there will help keep little heads and hands warm this winter! As always, if you would like to volunteer your time to help with Chase Hamper Society, we would love to have you! Thank you everyone, for making Christmas happen for so many!

The Changing Times, and a Time to Change
submitted by A.McLaren, Chase Environmental Action Group
SUNFLOWER HOLIDAY SCHEDULE December 17th - Regular * December 24th - No Issue * December 31st - Regular
Since the beginning of Covid, many of us have reconnected to our natural world and increasingly appeciate the beauty in our community. We have walked along our favourite paths. The Fairyland Trail, created and enhanced by the little ones at Haldane Elementary, provided much entertainment as we walked along the wooded trail that housed small creatures and insects. Continuing along this trail we became familiar with the cemetery, where many former Chase residents have made their final resting place. Along Little Shuswap Lake we have strolled the beaches, and taken in the beauty of the surrounding mountains and hills. We have witnessed dead Salmon strewn along the shores and are reminded of their long journey home from the ocean to spawn, thus repeating the miraculous cycle. West of Aylmer Rd, we have w a n d e re d the trails near Chase Creek with other pet owners, cyclists, a n d horseback riders on our way to the river. On a lucky day, we may have seen raccoons, c o m e a c r o s s d a m s created by beavers,
and observed their fallen trees. We couldn’t really see the creek along the path as trees and the riparian zone were there to help prevent it from flooding. The trees and other plants also hid the creatures that prefer to avoid human contact. We began to realize how we are all connected and therefore can live together. But during the past few months, it has been painful to observe the changes in our little town. Fairyland Trail is no longer, nor is the route we used to take to get to the hiking trails on Scatchard Mountain. The construction of the new four lane highway is consuming the area, which will soon become covered with asphalt. Now when we walk along the roads or drive to get to the hiking trails, we begin to realize that the cemetery that was once a quiet spot for residents that passed away, has now become a mere chunk of land that will be enclosed soon by two streams of speeding traffic. A section of the walk beside Little Shuswap Lake has been fenced and cut off to everyone. On that same beach, hundreds of tires that once seemed like a good idea to hold the bank from eroding, have become loose, and with time will end up on the beach and in the water. Even Whitlfield Park is no longer a park that we can play in. We have discovered that most of the trees beside Chase Creek parallel to Aylmer Rd. have been removed. We now see the homes that are on the east side of the creek. The wildlife that lived in these protected areas have had to move to another location. Continued on page 7...
Page 7 • December 10th, 2021 • Chase Sunflower Continued from page 6... Environmental The trees that once stabilized the banks, kept the water cool for fish, and kept us at a distance, are gone. Trees will need to be replanted, trees that will take years to grow. This area of our village is slated for housing and people from afar will come to enjoy the beauty that is Chase. Many say these changes are inevitable, and call it progress. But some of us will remember this area as it once was, and will recognize

the need to take future steps to protect it from further harm. We will need help from the local government, to take preventative measures in order to maintain the dwindling green spaces that we still have. We will need to understand that nothing should be built or changed without thinking of the remaining ecosystems first. Times have changed, not just for us here in Chase, but around the globe. It’s time to change our thinking too.

where the good and bad was discussed, no paint apparently was peeled off walls, no garbage cans were kicked, just a good old soul searching regarding commitment and character. What followed in the game was pace, pressure and passion alongside effort, hardwork and a very healthy dose of aggression. It was in your face hockey all game long in a display of effort not yet seen this season. In the 1st the boys scored 5 times to take a 5-0 lead. Poole started the scoring from Lucas Ouellette and Mikkel Hrechka, followed by an unassisted goal from Captain Jacob Biensch. That was followed 21 seconds later by a tally from Ouellette helped by Brayden Haskell and Keegan Pittendreigh. Pittendreigh then scored his first of two aided by Ouellette and Haskell. Biensch got his second from Aiden Brown to give the HEAT what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. In the 2nd Biensch unassisted again popped the biscuit into the basket and later in the period Brown from Hrechka and Ouellette made it 7-0. The 3rd stanza saw Biensch complete his 4 goal night assisted by Poole and Brown. Pittendreigh with his second from Hrechka and Biensch finished the goal extravanganza, a 9-0 shutout win. Rod May between the pipes denied 26 Wrangler shots to earn very honourable mention as star of this one. The award was given to Captain Jacob Biensch for his 4 goal (2 unassisted), 1 assist foray on this evening. That accomplishment was just one sign of what a good leader is and does. Lucas Oullette with 1 goal and 3 assists, Keegan Pittendreigh with 2 goals and1 assist also receive recognition, but this 60 minutes of entertainment was a complete team effort that resulted in success. So, you may wish to attend this Friday’s clash at 7:00 pm versus the KIJHL League leading Osoyoos COYOTES to see for yourself if the HEAT have turned up the heat. Our guess is they won’t sit back and you won’t be able to either. Local hockey is now hard working in your face aggression with pace, passion and effort. See you at the rink, boom boom boom.
