EVERY CHILD MATTERS – HEAT HOCKEY by Scott Koch

What a difference a few days make in Junior Hockey. Last week’s news was gloom and doom, with the anticipation the HEAT were falling apart. Injuries weren’t helping to key regulars on the roster, and that list is now at six… ouch. However buckets were snapped on securely to heads, socks were pulled up and the boys worked hard to achieve success. To say the least it was a far more positive couple of contests to write about. Wednesday the 10th of November the arch rival Sicamous EAGLES flew back into town mere days after trouncing the HEAT. Different day – different result! The Sicamous crew got on the board first before Dylan Handel handled the vulcanized rubber into the net twice, the first one unassisted and the second helped by Jarod Sigouin and Lucas Ouellette. In the 2nd James Poole from Justin Vinterlik and Connor Nelles started the party, but the EAGLES got one back. Sigouin popped his 6th of

the season aided by Matteo Bordin and Ouellette. Local Carden Alec finished off the period with his 1st from Poole and Vinterlik. The HEAT just had to hold on but did one better in the 3rd with Aiden Brown scoring unassisted. A well earned 6-2 victory backed up by Jack Osmond stopping 35 of 37 shots fired his way.

The two stars W R A N G L E R’ S tender Casey Thomson 43/46 and HEAT’s Roderic May 31/33. The local fans left happy as they swam to their vehicles in a downpour of precipitation.

Next visitors to the Art Holding Memorial Arena were the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS who chuck James Poole wagoned into rainy Chase on Saturday the 13th. Spread 1 tablespoon ranch dressing over each chicken breast. Top each with 2 slices of fresh mozzarella. Cover the baking dish with foil, so that the foil is not touching the cheese. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil. Sprinkle chopped bacon on top of the chicken. Bake, uncovered, for 10-15 more minutes, until chicken is cooked through. Chase and District Fish and Game Club Update by secretary Helen Dalin

Well so far this month has been a little slower than October for the club. The Big Fall 50/50 Draw came to an end on the 30th and the winners, Christine, and Jack Cail, from Chase, received a cheque for $4600 presented to them by Ralph Bischoff. Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to all the people in the community who supported our club by buying tickets. This was a successful fundraiser and will probably become an annual event. It doesn’t look likely our banquet will be happening anytime soon. Another big thank you goes out to gravel pit operator Bradley Prokopc of Turtle Valley Rock Products. He has donated gravel to the club on two occasions. CDFGC owes a big thank you to Bradley Prokopc for his very needed, and generous donation. This gravel has been well used around the shooting venues to reduce the mud. President Ralph Bischoff offered a big thank you to all the volunteers that came out to help with the Friends and Family Archery Fun Day. The weather was perfect, and the day was a great success. Approximately 75 people attended, and the event had several families wanting new club memberships for January. The kids really loved the experience. A big thanks to Marc Britton who came out from the Kamloops Archery Club to volunteer his expertise with the younger archers. The club would like to do this type of event again, earlier in the year. First pistol club practice went well thanks to Rob and Jody Keizer for stepping up to do this. There was a mix of new shooters with experienced shooters. Rules were explained clearly and well followed and supervised for the beginning shooters. Experienced shooters must follow the same rules laid out by the range officer in charge. The next pistol practice will be the 3rd Saturday of the month, November 20th at 10 am to 12 pm. After discussion about our fees for the last 2 meetings and doing some research into other club’s fees of similar size in the province, it was decided that

He is predeceased by his wife Mary in June of 2020 and is survived by his children, Jackie (Dave), Merv (Jane), Colin (Gail), and Lyle (Konnie), and eleven grandchildren, Gareth, Megan (Bill), John, Reid (Taylor), Jackie (Jay), Chad, Kassie (Chris), Brock (Kirsten), Blake (Delanie) Denton (Adana) and Jake (Vanessa). Jack was born on September 12, 1931, in Ashcroft and lived in Vancouver for a short time before moving to Chase as a young child. He attended Chase Superior School, leaving school at sixteen to work for his grandfather, Merv Reid. Jack was a longtime resident of Chase. He had deep roots in Chase and loved the area. After working for M.J. Reid Co Ltd in the Shuswap area for many years, the company’s operations ended and, Jack went to work for B.J. Carney in Enderby. He worked with B.J. Carney until his retirement in 1996. Jack always spoke fondly of the many people he met through work over the years and shared many stories with his family. Jack will be remembered as a man who was well respected, strong, generous and kind. His calm, caring nature enriched the lives of his family and many friends. Jack made his entire family feel loved, safe and protected. These are qualities that we can only hope to emulate. We appreciate the great life we had with him and are so grateful to be a part of this family! Words cannot express our sorrow. Donations in Jack’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Society of BC or Heart and Stoke foundation of Canada. A family celebration will be held at a later date.

News from First Nations Part I by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist Part 1 of a two-part series

National Aboriginal Veterans Day November 8th commemorates the more than 12,000 Indigenous veterans who volunteered to fight in World Wars I and II, as well as the Korean War. National Aboriginal Veterans Day began in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1994 to recognize their civic contributions by serving Canada in those significant battles. Indigenous Women and Girls Speak The report “Sacred and Strong: Upholding our Matriarchal Roles” gives voice to over 120 First Nations women and girls who’ve shared their stories and lived experiences to represent, to connect, and to speak as

the females behind the data. Grounded in Indigenous perspectives of wholistic wellness, this collaboration between the First Nations Health Authority and the Provincial Health Officer aims to celebrate the many ways that BC First Nations women and girls are flourishing and also to shed light on where systemic barriers continue to negatively impact their health and self-determination. From its beautiful cover artwork to the photographs and stories within, this is no ordinary report. It can be accessed at www. fnha.ca/sacredstrong# FirstNationsWomenHealth. Continued on page 12...

First Nations News

“We are Well” Garden - Cwelcwelt Kuc Historically, the Secwepemc land and food system was known for its rich biodiversity and pure, clean water. The Secwepemc Foodlands Conservation and Healing Region includes prime agricultural land and traditional harvesting areas in an extended network of forests, fields, and waterways. It also includes migration corridors for culturally important animals and plants, as well as being home to endangered species and an internationally recognized critical bird migration zone. The need to protect, conserve, and restore stems from the climate crisis, increasing encroachment, loss of biodiversity, as well as colonial policies, planning, and governance. It has become readily apparent that colonization has led to traumatic challenges from which we must recover through landbased healing and learning. An Initial Site Assessment Report has been compiled by nature-based conservation planning consultant Herb Hammond of the Silva

Forest Foundation. “We Are Well” and “Food & Freedom” workshops and healing activities are being planned by the project team, whose members are Dawn Morrison, Shawn Billy, and Aimie Robinson. An October letter sent from the First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC), comprised of representatives from the BC Assembly of First Nations, the First Nations Summit, and the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, has been sent to BC Premier John Horgan and Minister of Environment & Climate Change George Heyman. It outlined in detail the FNLC concerns around climate change and the urgent overhaul needed of the CleanBC initiative. 2021’s heat wave and devastating fire season, as well as the future welfare of children and grandchildren were the prime motivators of this call for action. The letter pointed out that the signatory organizations and First Nations in general have much knowledge to share and are committed to doing so, in order that humans and wildlife survive the

worsening climate crisis. Secwepemc Landmarks Project As described in previous News articles, the Landmarks Project is designed to create awareness of Indigenous culture and history within Secwepemc traditional territory through a series of sculptures and storyboards in key visitor areas, and also includes 100 new trailhead posts carved by local Indigenous youth. A call for submissions (which closes November 26) has been issued for Indigenous and settler artists to tender their ideas incorporating Secwepemc stories as well as the design details for the Salmon Arm Wharf monument. Blessing ceremonies at the Salmon Arm Wharf and R.J. Haney Village sculpture sites have been held. * * * Part 2 will feature pertinent news from our three neighbouring First Nations communities.
