Rotary Brings "Brain Bikes" to Haldane submitted by Doug Everett

The Chase Rotary Club held a successful Wreath/Swag sale during November to raise funds to purchase a second "Brain Bike" for Haldane Elementary School. These bikes are used by staff to help kids deal with their learning. These bikes are silent while being ridden so the child can remain in class and continue their learning. In the past, students who were disruptive or emotionally detached from learning, left the room to calm down then returned when stable to continue their learning. Haldane is also purchasing a third bike and as I write this,

the bikes are being delivered. We purchased a "Brain Bike " last year, and it proved successful so since fundraising methods have changed due to Covid-19, our normal fundraising avenues were curtailed so, we decided to create and sell Christmas wreaths and swags. This even was challenging since we could not meet collectively in a work party-style so individuals took on the various parts of the project. In total, we produced 42 wreaths and swags, next year, we hope to double our production.

CHASE HAMPER SOCIETY The Chase Hamper Society would like to apologize to Welton Storage for any misrepresentation of information that may have occurred at a recent Village Council meeting, as a result of the words 'rodent' and 'storage' mentioned at our Board meeting which was attended by the Mayor and our liaison Councillor. The Hamper Society is deeply apologetic for the undue toll the Welton family has endured over this unfortunate matter. We also want to recognize and thank the Welton Family for their many years of support of the Chase Hamper Society, both as volunteers, and the decades of free storage given.

New Initiative will Publicize Chase Businesses

As reported to Kelsey Snelgrove, Sunflower Manager/Editor Promotion of local commerce and business is an important part of economic development for any community. And an innovative local partnership intends to do just that through a unique print media tool. Given their collective concern around commercial sustainability and growth, the Village of Chase, its Chamber of Commerce and The Chase Sunflower have agreed to cover 75% of the cost of producing w r i t t e n advertorials publicizing new startups, as well as established businesses. These creative articles, each of which comprises several hundred words as well as a photograph, will tell the story of the enterprise, its history, its goals, its business philosophy, and its service or product. The details provided in advertorials go a long way to promoting what’s new and what’s available within a community—as well as providing some familiarity with its entrepreneurs. Award-winning author and journalist Carolyn Parks Mintz has written many such pieces in the past for a large municipality in her home province of Ontario and will be assigned the project within Chase. “Advertorials

have been very successful in drawing attention to new ventures, as well as longstanding businesses,” Parks Mintz reports. “And I so enjoyed learning about local enterprise and getting to know owners.” The tripartite financial support being offered for this undertaking means that the cost to businesses will be minimal—something that’s especially important to new start-ups. And if the operation is a Chamber of Commerce member, the Chamber will pay the business’s share of the advertising fee. Those enterprises who earlier this year expressed interest in a new publicity campaign, will be contacted in the near future. Check your Sunflower for the first of the advertorials later this month. And to obtain details on getting your message out at nominal or no cost, and/or to arrange an interview, contact info@chasesunflower.ca. Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising. ―Mark Twain

Village Council Meeting Highlights Tuesday, December 8, 2020 Submitted by Village of Chase

Council heard from Dylan Houlihan from Urban Systems regarding the Housing Needs Assessment. The report highlights the various types of housing that will most benefit Chase over the next number of years.

Club to install lighting at Centennial Park specifically for the skatepark.

Council deferred the delegation from the Curling Club until the next meeting (December 22, 2020) which will be held virtually using Zoom.

Council passed a motion for the Village to apply for funding to provide for additional equipment and training for the Road Rescue service.

Council members gave their reports for their council related activities over the past two weeks and accepted the written reports from Administration. Council then adopted the Housing Needs Assessment report. Council adopted Bylaw 894 which will institute fees for second and subsequent re-inspections of commercial buildings if they do not comply with the Fire Code requirements. Council adopted an amendment to the Fees and Charges bylaw. Council passed a resolution to hold the December 22,2020 meeting virtually using the Zoom platform and extended the closure of the community hall and seniors’ centre to activities until January 8, 2021. Council passed a resolution for the Village to work with the Chase Lions

Council approved the 2021 Council liaison and other appointments and approved the 2021 Council meeting schedule.

Mayor Crowe put forward a notice of motion for council to consider passing a resolution at a future meeting to provide for a report out to the community on Council’s 2021/2022 strategic plan and to communicate with the public the many projects and activities the Village is working on behalf of the citizens of Chase. Councillor Torbohm put forward a notice of motion that all bylaw complaint actions by the Village be reported back to the original complainant. The meeting concluded at 7:09 pm. The next meeting will take place at 4 pm December 22, 2020 via Zoom. Information on how to participate will be advertised in the Sunflower and on the Village’s social media sites in advance of that meeting. The Curling Club representatives will participate in that meeting as a delegation to Council.

Crispy sweet potato fries

Ingredients 2 medium sweet potatoes 1 tablespoon cornstarch ½ teaspoon fine sea salt 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Optional spices: freshly ground black pepper, cayenne pepper and/or garlic powder Instructions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F with racks in the lower and upper thirds of the oven (make sure the top rack is about 6″ from the heat source and no closer). Line two large, rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper so the fries don’t get stuck to the pans. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into fry-shaped pieces about ¼″ wide and ¼″ thick. Try to cut them into similarly sized pieces so the fries will bake evenly. Transfer half of the uncooked fries to one baking sheet, and the other half to the other baking sheet. Sprinkle the sweet potato fries with the cornstarch (use 1 ½ teaspoons per pan) and salt (¼ teaspoon per pan). Toss until the fries are lightly coated in powder. Drizzle the olive oil over the fries (1 tablespoon per pan) and toss until the fries are lightly and evenly coated in oil, and no powdery spots remain (use your fingers to rub visible cornstarch into the fries as necessary). Arrange your fries in a single layer and don’t overcrowd; otherwise they will never crisp up. Bake for 20 minutes, then flip the fries so they can cook on all sides. Arrange the fries in even layers across the pans again, moving any particularly browned fries more toward the middle of the pan so they don’t get overcooked. Return the pans to the oven, swapping their positions (former top pan goes to the lower rack and vice versa). Bake for 10 to 18 more minutes, or until the fries are crispy. You’ll know they’re almost done when the surface of the fries change from shiny orange to a more matte, puffed up texture. Keep an eye on them, as they can turn from crisp to burnt quickly. Sometimes the lower pan will be done a few minutes before the top pan. Don’t worry if the edges are a little bit brown; they will taste more caramelized than burnt. If desired, toss the baked fries with seasonings, to taste. I like to use lots of freshly ground black pepper, and a scant ¼ teaspoon each cayenne pepper and garlic powder. Serve warm!
