Chase Museum Feature: A CONTRIBUTION TO HISTORY by Dick Hermann
Did you know that the first railway service to Kamloops came, not from the East but from the West, in 1884, when the CPR rail line was completed from Port Moody to Kamloops? It was almost a year and a half later, in late 1885, that the CPR connected Kamloops to eastern Canada. Kamloops became a divisional point on the railway, where fresh crews and equipment were provided for trains heading both east and west. While studying the history of this area, I have observed that everyone who lives here makes a contribution to the history and development of the area. Such contributions are not always positive, and some are much larger than others. Most of such contributions are made without the contributor being aware that a contribution is being made. Let me give you an example. I know a lady--let’s call her Mary for ease of reference--who is one of a family of six children who were born and grew up in Kamloops. This family and their relatives were significantly affected by the arrival of the CPR in Kamloops. One of Mary’s great-grandfathers (Andrew Goddard) was one of the first locomotive
engineers to drive a scheduled CPR train into Kamloops from the east, after that portion of the railway was completed in 1885. That in itself was a significant contribution to the history of the area, and the family. Not long after he drove the first train into Kamloops, Andrew was badly burned in a railway accident and lost a leg as a result. After recovering from that accident Andrew and his wife ran a boarding house in Kamloops to accommodate the railway crews who were obliged to spend time in Kamloops between trains. Mary’s maternal grandfather (Tom Costley) travelled by rail from eastern Canada across the United States to Washington State in the early 1880’s, and then walked from the Lower Mainland to Kamloops, before that portion of the railway was completed. In those days “walking” would likely have consisted of a combination of paddle-wheel steamer, horse-drawn carriages, horseback, and actual walking. No one knows exactly when Tom Costley arrived in Kamloops, but it was long enough before the arrival of the railroad to allow him to develop a livery stable business in what is now downtown Kamloops, from which he supplied the local population with horses and related equipment. When the CPR became an operating reality, the railway purchased Tom’s livery stable property as the site for their Kamloops station, and Tom moved his operation to North Kamloops. At the start of the First World War, Tom sold most of his horses to the French army for use by their cavalry forces. Such a sale would not have been possible if the railroad had not been available to provide a means of shipping the horses. After Tom sold his horses to the French he acquired the fishing resort at what was then known as Fish Lake. Fish Lake later became Lac Le Jeune when the lake was renamed to recognize the contribution made to development of the Kamloops/

Shuswap area by Father Le Jeune, an early priest in the area. In the subsequent years Tom developed the resort into a thriving operation, well known to avid fishermen in western Canada and United States. The picture below—taken about 1951--shows the Lac Le Jeune lodge as developed by Tom Costley. After Tom passed away in 1946 the Lac Le Jeune resort was run firstly by one of Tom’s daughters, Doris Costley, and later by one of his granddaughters, Muriel Whitaker. The lodge was sold by the family in about 1968. As a result of the efforts of Tom Costley and his family, the Lodge and this area of British Columbia became very well known, and resulted in many visitors being attracted to the area. Perhaps even more importantly, in 2017 the sixth generation of Tom Costley’s family enjoyed the summer months at Lac Le Jeune, on a separate property on the lake, still owned by the family. The above is similar to stories that can be told of many, many local residents— each making a contribution to the development and history of the area. The research of these stories is fascinating and very rewarding, and adds very much to the understanding and appreciation of
where we live. In this particular instance I can personally vouch for the veracity of the story, as I have come to know Mary very well—after all, we have been married for 66 years. If you have an interest in learning more about the people—perhaps even relatives-who contributed to the development of the area in which we live, or any other part of the history of this area, please visit the Chase Museum where you have an opportunity to do so. The Museum contains many photographs, relics and records from the past, and the Museum staff will be pleased to help you research whatever you are interested in. The Museum is also always searching for volunteers to help arranging displays and organizing its records and photographs. The Museum is an important part of Chase, and if you would like to support us in our commitment to be the guardian of the history of the Shuswap, please consider becoming a member. Your membership demonstrates the support of the community, which is essential for our grant applications, the success of which is essential for funding our continuing operation and service to the community.

Whoa Trivia! “Almost” is the longest word in English with all the letters in alphabetical order. Most toilets flush in E flat. (Editors Note: Ours was closer to G) Fredric Baur was the man who invented the iconic “Pringles” can. When he died, his ashes were buried in one. Steve Jobs relieved stress by soaking his feet in Apple’s company toilets.

Trustees seeking input on seventh graders
On Monday, December 11th the Board of Education of the Kamloops Thompson School District passed a motion to initiate consultation with parents of students in Chase, Barriere and Clearwater in the new year. Trustees will be seeking input on whether to move grade seven students from Haldane Elementary to Chase Secondary in the fall of 2018. No decision has been made and this is a
consultation process only. As many parents know, Haldane Elementary is presently experiencing crowding and School District No. 73 is looking for ways to ease that situation. “Parental input is very important when making decisions such as this” said Chase Trustee Denise Harper. “I look forward to hearing from parents when we meet in January.”

Obituary Stephanie Price
May 26, 1945 to Nov 28, 2017 After fighting a long courageous battle with chronic illness, mom passed away suddenly at home with her beloved dog Shyla nearby, at the age of 72. Born in Winnipeg, and having lived in many places in Canada and abroad, she settled in Chase 10 years ago. She established friendships through her love of cribbage and walking with other dog lovers in the area. Her greatest joy was spending time in nature and enjoying all its splendor. She will be remembered for her quiet, intelligent nature. She had several short stories and poems published in her younger years. This one was never published but was meant for her family and friends: Don’t cry for me Cry instead for those Who suffer injustices daily For those who hunger for peace And human dignity Grieve instead for this poor world That we are destroying with All its wonder and beauty There will never be another one like this Be happy for me instead For I am now free of pain and sadness I was born a child of nature and am only returning home. Stephanie leaves behind her daughter, Charlotte (Aurele); 3 grandchildren, Monica, Ben and Jem as well as a granddaughter, Madison, in addition to her sister, Brenda (Joe). Cremation has already taken place and there will be no funeral by request. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to your favorite animal charity. There will be a celebration of life at her residence 909 Hysop Road, Chase, BC on Dec 17 at 2 pm. Online condolences may be sent to Stephanie’s family through her obituary at www. bowersfuneralservice.com

COPING WITH A HEAT RASH A HEAT rash can be annoying, itchy and sore but there is a very effective cure. The Chase HEAT have discovered that 14 goals in 4 nights rather than ointments and scratching can sooth the troubled spots. Stepping up to play through the pain of losing many team mates also has a special effect on the irritating ailment. So while 5 or more fight the serious injury rash, others less afflicted, and the few actually healthy fight to conquer contests of flash and dash, as well as the errant elbow or two. C ommencing Wednesday the 6th the HEAT left Chase by stage coach to meddle with the lawless WRANGLERS from 100 Mile House. The Cariboo Cowboys ride hard every time the two teams meet, but they were no match for the HEAT wave that swept through their town. The only score of the 1st came off the twig of Zachary Fournier assisted by Kaden Black and Michael Fidanza. In the 2nd Fidanza from Pat Brady and Kolten Moore followed by the Fournier “Force” assisted by Brady and Black. In the 3rd period the WRANGLERS popped a pair to make the situation tense. However Evan Hughes from Seamus Collins and Cory Loring restored justice. Veteran Fournier iced the capades with a hat trick empty net goal. The end result a 5-2 tough road win
submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat with Jared Breitkreuz obtained in trade from 100 Mile House, stopping 30 of 32 shots he faced. Feisty Friday Night in Sicamous found the HEAT cruising down the Shuswap to meet the EAGLES. This contest was nasty and injuries mounted up throughout the game. Chase lost Colton Nikiforuk to a lower b o d y i nj u r y, G r a d y Musgrave to an u p p e r b o d y laceration as well as Caleb Biensch, Quinn Slezak and Zachary Fournier to periods of rehab. Trainer Julio Iglesias had a parade of wounded and bloodied warriors spend time with him. There was no scoring until the 2nd when the houseboat crew got a marker. In the 3rd the big man on campus Fournier scored on the man advantage from Hughes and Ryan Okino. In the 2nd Overtime “Black Friday” Black blasted in the winner from Bourne and Brady. A very hard fought 2-1 road win with Conor Webb repelling 38 of 39 EAGLE shots. While the boys on the bus licked their wounds, Musgrave and Fournier went to the hospital where medical staff left them in stitches. On Saturday Night the Princeton
POSSE rode into town to face off versus the HEAT at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. The HEAT fielded 15 skaters with Fidanza moved to the backend for the night. The locals fired in 2 counters in the 1st, Brady on the powerplay from Moore and Fidanza, then Moore from Bourne and Breitkruez. In the 2nd the visitors tied the game prior to Okino from Moore and Biensch regaining the lead. Princeton tied it up again, but Moore with his 2nd from Brady and Bourne resurrected the lead. Five goals in the 3rd hushed the crowd in the beginning but the cacophony soon returned. Princeton took the lead with a pair, but the short benched HEAT came back hot, Brady with his 2nd from Gavin Mattey and Hughes started things. Bourne then popped a pair, the 1st from Fidanza and Moore and the closer an empty net tally once again assisted by Moore. Moore, Bourne and Brady each fired two goals, Moore ended the night with 6 points to move up the KIJHL League Leaders chart. Bourne regained the number 1 spot in the League. TRADING PLACES: The HEAT traded power forward Cory Loring to the Grand Forks Border Bruins in exchange for forward Brady Marzocco. Program sales have increased with all the multiple roster changes in the past two weeks, what a great fundraising initiative. The tough and talented Kelowna Chiefs come to town Friday the 15th to face the HEAT. See you there!
