The Community Hall was beautifully decorated on Saturday night for the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce’s Gala & Business Excellence Awards. Left to Right: 2016 Christmas Gala committee Kerri Koskimaki, Ali Maki, Sue Bleile, Darlene Trowsse, Brenda Murray, and Carmen Miller
O
ur goal for the first annual Chase & District Chamber of Commerce Gala and Business Excellence Awards was to create a beautiful Christmas evening for our community. Our excitement grew with the need to print more tickets as we sold out of the first batch printed. Our final total for the evening was 166 tickets sold. Uptown Chefs Catering from the Kamloops Coast Hotel laid out a delicious banquet and a stellar desert buffet. We added to the desert a 5 tier Chocolate
fountain with fresh fruit to dip. The Chase & District Festival Society, (Gail and Kim) were our Bartenders for the evening. The Chase Senior Secondary School Band served appetizers during happy hour and worked the coat check. We are proud to say that our Wine Basket raffle brought in $425.00 which 100% of the proceeds will be going to the Band so they can go to Whistler for their band trip. To add to the fun the Chase Lions Club conducted their Casino which was a very busy room throughout the evening. Continued on page 3...

Ingredients 3 tbsp. olive oil 1 small loaf bread cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 large onions, chopped salt black pepper 4 stalks celery, cut into 1/4-in. pieces 2 large carrots peeled and cut into 1/4-in. pieces 1 c. fresh parsley, roughly chopped 1/4 c. fresh dill, roughly chopped 3 c. chicken broth 3 large eggs, beaten 6 oz. extra-sharp Cheddar, coarsely grated Directions Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Oil a 9- by 13-inch baking dish. Place the bread on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until dry and beginning to turn golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes, stirring halfway through cooking. Meanwhile, heat 3 tablespoon oil in
a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, season with 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and cook, covered, stirring occasionally for 12 minutes. Add the celery and carrots and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender, 12 to 15 minutes more. Stir in the parsley and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the dill. Pour the broth over the toasted bread and toss until the broth is absorbed. Fold in the eggs. Add the vegetable mixture and toss to combine, then fold in the cheese. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and refrigerate for up to 1 day. Bring the stuffing to room temperature, cover with nonstick or oiled foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake until golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes more.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS OF CHASE –
Safe driving tips around Snow Removal Equipment
“Once again, our public works staff as well as local private contractors have been hard at work to make your streets and sidewalks safe. While snow clearing and sweeping usually takes place while the majority of residents are fast asleep, there are occasions where snow clearing must be done during the daytime. Please, please respect the equipment and the operators, and give the snow clearing equipment and operators safe and wide clearance at all times in order
that they may do their jobs safely and efficiently! As with anyone, snow clearing operators often cannot see behind their equipment as clearly as one can in a regular vehicle. PLEASE refrain from driving up immediately behind a snow clearing vehicle as they may back up unexpectedly. Stay back a minimum of 15 meters from all trucks and snow removal equipment at all times. When you need to maneuver around snow
clearing equipment, make eye contact with the operator before proceeding. Please use respectful road sense with all users of our roads, including snow removal equipment and other large vehicles, especially at this time of year. Thank you for your cooperation to ensure we are all safe to serve our customers and community in the future! From the Village of Chase AND your local independent operators.”

Gear Down the X-Mas Engine & Enjoy the Season by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author & Freelance Writer
Part 3 of a three part series Regardless of all the jolly and the holly and the hope of The Season, there are families who perhaps should not be together for Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever is being celebrated. Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation comes to mind—good intentions, notso-good outcome. This is something not often discussed, but probably should be. Not all festive seasons are festive—not everyone looks forward to December’s tinsel and trees and the gathering of relatives. Family dynamics are complex. Human frailty and foibles being what they are, problems can develop, people get hurt, and the elephant in the room becomes a permanent resident. Sometimes, it’s just too hard to put on a happy face and make nice around the table. There are difficulties that can’t be overcome—but maybe they can be avoided. If the heart isn’t in being with family, then why go there? Be honest—not abrasive—tell them you can’t make it because it’s too stressful. Full stop. Don’t explain, don’t complain.
Situations are what they are. If they can’t be remedied, accept that. Then do something constructive, not resentful, to deal with it. Send remembrances to those you get along with or call to say you love them. And don’t be guilted into showing up. That’s not fair to other family members and it’s not being fair to yourself. Better to send holiday wishes from afar than to have an explosion at close range. Maybe a trip to a warm climate would be a great way to spend the season, or arranging to have a meal and a visit with friends who are also on their own. Such a group could be relaxed, low key and fun—with no lamenting or griping about who did what to whom at the last gathering of your clan. No one needs to know, nor wants to know. Perhaps volunteering at a community dinner for those less fortunate or
making deliveries to those confined to home would be an option. Getting out of yourself and giving of yourself are good antidotes for lots of things. The obligatory attendance that results in being with someone who’s not your favourite person isn’t good for anyone—and can leave a taste in your mouth that definitely isn’t turkey and cranberries. Arrange a January visit with family members you get along with—extend the season and avoid the conflict. Christmas and New Year’s are a time of reverie and resolution. Maybe examining a relationship that’s gone sideways in the bright lights of the holidays will make for a future encounter of the third kind. Being there in spirit on December 25 might be the best choice after all.

The Chase HEAT hummed through the past weekend with a pair of hard earned team focussed victories. Friday night the 9th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena saw the visiting Princeton POSSE meet up with hot goaltender Nic Bruyere who earned a 4-0 shutout. Saturday night the 10th saw an energetic local crew meet the Kamloops STORM and take a 4-2 win home to Chase. In the Friday contest it was all home side as the HEAT fired 42 shots at a game Bobby Milligan in net for the POSSE. Not to be outclassed Nic Bruyere stood strong at the other end stopping all 19 shots he faced to collect the donut. No scoring in the 1st, in the 2nd Michael Fidanza popped his 1st from Ryan Okino and Josh Bourne. Then Bourne flipped one in the net from Fidanza and Cody Hodges. In the 3rd Fidanza got his 2nd shorthanded from Michael Howlett. Kaden Black scored the 4th goal on the powerplay from Zachary Fournier and Spencer Farstad. A well earned 4-0 shutout and a valuable 2 points in the standings. On Saturday night at Memorial Arena in Kamloops the HEAT faced off versus arch rivals the Kamloops STORM. Coach Brad Fox made a game day decision to put Kolten Moore in the lineup after a week off
the ice. That decision proved fortuitous as Moore popped in a pair to seal the deal. In the 1st Black got things started on the powerplay from Travis Beaubien and Fournier. Kamloops got one from Dallas Otto to notch things at 1-1. In the 2nd Moore got his 1st from Beaubien. Onto the 3rd and Moore scored his 2nd unassisted. Ten minutes later the STORM’s Kaine Comin got his 1st of the year to make things tense. However, with 17 seconds left Howlett tossed the puck in the empty basket assisted by Bourne and Grady Musgrave. A big four point win 4-2 to create a gap between the two teams in the standings. Going into the final weekend before the players get a Holiday Season break, the HEAT remain in 1st place in their division with 38 points, 6 up on 100 Mile House and 7 up on Kamloops. Michael Fidanza is 9th in KIJHL scoring with 39 points, and Kaden Black is 11th with 35 points. Bruyere enjoyed his 2nd shutout of the season. The entire Chase HEAT Organization wishes all of you a safe, happy and warm festive season! See you at AHMA on Saturday December 17h versus the STORM from Kamloops. It’s Cookie Box Night so be sure to come and buy some goodies while supporting your team!
