Weekend at Arena Full of Smooth Skating

B

submitted by Tamara Friedman-de Jager

etween glitter and figure skates, the arena was a constant buzz of excitement and entertainment this weekend, as the Shuswap Skating Club played host to a regional skating competition. We saw amazing skating, met so many people from a lot of different places and had a superb team of volunteers all weekend helping me make this event successful. Our 3 local skaters came out on the ice and did amazing routines, looked beautiful in their outs and made our parents, friends and community very proud. I cannot express the gratitude I have for everyone who helped make this event successful by helping with donations. The arena manager and

staff who kept things going smoothly with all the spectators and skaters, this was no easy task and they keep everything running smoothly. Thank you to ALIB for coming out to do a Blessing Ceremony, this was great for everyone to see.

Please join the family for a celebration of Shirley’s life to be held at the Chase Legion on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 2 o’clock. Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concerts a Resounding Success! by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist

Mounted by Wildwood Productions, the recent celebration of the man and his music – iconic Gordon Lightfoot – can only be described as a wonderful walk down memory lane and superb recognition of one of Canada’s greatest songwriters. The twohour shows, held November 18 and 19, were also fundraisers for Gleneden Hall’s future renovations. The cast of 20, and the soldout audiences, thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as eighteen of Gordon’s popular songs were presented. Musicians and singers delivered the distinct stories in his lyrics with performances from the heart. Your journalist’s poem about

the life and career of Gordon Lightfoot, entitled “Lighting Our Way,” was also very well received. Connection with the fans in attendance was palpable. The show is to be remounted in May 2024 at the R.J. Haney Heritage Village, just outside Salmon Arm. Details will be forthcoming. In addition to the respect of fellow artists, the devoted admiration of millions of fans, and 41 prestigious awards, Lightfoot was honoured with three Doctoral Degrees, the Order of Canada, and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Gordon Lightfoot lives on through the marvelous music he has left us. Bravo!

Fill the Cruiser, Holiday Train & More submitted by Brenda Patterson for Chase Hamper Society

December has finally arrived, but the Christmas spirit of giving and sharing has been on full display in Chase for several weeks now! A comment overheard by a recent new resident to Chase “I just can’t believe what a welcoming and sharing community Chase is”!! So True!! Over the past number of years, many people in our area have quietly and consistently donated and shared what they can with those who have fallen on hard times for whatever reason, and are in need of a kind word, a smile, and a hand up to provide nutritious meals to their families, and the little extras at special times like Christmas! There are many groups, businesses, and individuals who come up with innovative ways to collect donations and gifts to contribute to our Food Bank! Through the Chase Hamper Society, they are able to provide that help, and know that it will reach those who need it, not just at Christmas but throughout the year. For those who could use some help but are hesitant to ask, please know that our records are confidential, we provide a safe space, we

listen, and we all understand that any one of us could be in the same situation some day, if we haven’t been there already. Our next Food Bank day will be on Monday, Dec. 4 from Noon until 3pm. Please call us at 250-682-6155 to register for a pick up time! The last Christmas Hamper Registration and Toy Shop will be Monday, Dec 11 at the Chase Community Hall 1:003:00PM. Please remember to bring ID’s for everyone and proof of residency. Most ID’s will have your current address. The Chase Heat, our very popular local Hockey Team and organization, is sponsoring their annual Food and Toy drive again this year! If you want to see what a hockey Team can collect on behalf of the local Food Bank, you need to attend the 3:00PM game this Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Art Holding Arena in Chase, and help them ‘Fill the Cruiser’ with non-perishable food and toys! The “Holiday Train” is crossing Canada on the rails again this year!! This is a major fundraiser for all the Food

Banks along the way, and Chase is no exception!! These wonderful people will roll into our little down on Saturday, Dec. 16 with their decorated train, Christmas lights, awesome music, and do what they do best! Please come out and enjoy the fun, and bring along any donations you can to fill the shelves at the Food Bank! The BC Food Banks van will be there, along with another, to collect donations of money (receipts will be sent to you), non-perishable food, Toys for the children, and Gifts for the Seniors which are included in the Christmas Hampers, and to others! If you would like to volunteer to help out at any of our venues, please call us at 250-682-6155 and let us know! We can always use more help, and with the increasing need for Food Banks across Canada, the Food hampers given out through our Chase Food Bank have doubled several times in the past four years. We are now giving out an average of 50 food hampers twice a month, with many going to families. All of the needed food is donated through our local communities, businesses, as well as the Food Share we receive through our BC Food Banks, and National Food Share programs. Come check out our new space at the Riverstone Family Resource Centre this Friday from 3:30 - 6:30pm. You can warm up with a hot chocolate and enjoy a yummy treat with us. We will also have a Christmas craft set up for the kids to enjoy.

There will be coffee offered (by donation) proceeds to Chase Country Christmas committee
