A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: Welcome to Advent by Tyler Harper, Pastor - Chase Evangelical Free Church Is it dark enough for you? One of the neat things about the written word is I have no idea when you will read this. The reader is completely free to read this whenever they want— or to never read these words. But one thing about this time of year, whether you will pick this up at twelve midnight or twelve noon, or somewhere in between, whatever time of day you are reading this, darkness isn’t far away. At this time of year, it is either getting dark outside, is dark out, or the darkness has just slipped out of sight. This week darkness is at most four hours away from any point of the day. Even at noon time it will be dark in four hours and was dark four hours ago. But when we are honest the darkness isn’t just related to the sun being at a certain angle in the sky, but the reality of life. So many things that come with so much hope don’t quite live up to that hope. Our families have tension in them, the news is full of brokenness, the things that we think will make us happy never seem to quite measure up, even our own actions aren’t quite what we wish they

would be. But the good news is, the light is coming. On our calendars, the days will soon be filled with more light. Days begin to get longer next week. This is the season that light comes. This is why we put up lights on our houses and on trees. To celebrate that light has come. Within the Christian tradition we put up lights and celebrate light coming into the world, not just because we get more hours of sunlight, but because a light – the Light— has come into the world that has dealt with all those other forms of darkness. Christians celebrate Christmas, the coming of Jesus into this world, at this time of year, not because we know which day on the calendar He was born, but because of what His coming means, light! Light where there was darkness and a light that will one day overcome all the remaining darkness. This light came so that the darkness in our lives could be dealt with, the darkness in our relationships could be resolved, and — one day— the darkness of our world will be no more.

This is why we celebrate. This is why at our church we gather on Christmas Eve and remind ourselves of the true hope that we have, of the joy of the season, and the difference light makes by re-telling the story and reliving it through candle light. It is dark out there, but a light has come. But light has to be experienced to be meaningful. Having a flashlight in the inky blackness of midnight doesn’t mean anything if you don’t engage the light, and so I would invite you to participate in one of the services here in Chase that will be occurring at 6 pm on Christmas Eve. The Chase Evangelical Free Church (295 Shuswap Ave) is hosting a traditional candle light service full of carols, the story of Jesus, and candle light. Shuswap Community Church (Chase Community Hall) is hosting a family focused gathering with skits, songs, and stories. It is my prayer that this Christmas you will experience the light of the season, not just the lights on the houses, or the growing daylight hours, but the light of the world. Merry Christmas Tyler Haper - tyler@chasechurch.com

During this beautiful Christmas season, you are warmly invited to join us for Mass. Christmas Eve: 8:00pm at the Spiritual Centre across the Pine Street bridge. Christmas Day: 9:00am at Blessed Sacrament Parish New Year's Day: 9:00am at Blessed Sacrament Parish.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

"A Mountain Made Out Of A Molehill" We live in one of the many cul de sacs in Chase and have been here for the past thirteen years. The first snow plowing of our cul de sac left a small pile of snow directly in front of our house, which is the only place for anyone coming to visit is able to park. I went to the Village office on Monday and requested that the next time the snow needed plowing/piling, would it be possible for the plow operator to take an extra five minutes of his time and move the small pile of snow approximately 20 feet over (where there would be absolutely no impact on us or any of our neighbours -- actually this is where the snow has always been piled). We were in Kamloops for the day on Tuesday and on our return, there is now a "mountain" of snow in the exact same spot! I called the Village office and was told that my message had been passed on; the response from the works department (I assume?) was that the plow operators could not take requests from homeowners and they pile snow "at their discretion as to where it is most convenient". Have you seriously had that many requests about moving piles of snow?? I somehow doubt it. I have never asked much, if anything, from the Village office. We have company coming to visit over Christmas and, as I mentioned before, the parking in front of our house is their only option. Now we have a "mountain" of snow to contend with. So much for a simple request being ignored -- I hope you took pleasure in exasperating one taxpayer who (in essence) pays your salary. Respectfully submitted - Gail Logan Crown Jewels Sincere Apologies to the lovely ladies of the Crown Jewels for mistakenly identifying them as Red Hat Ladies last week! Merry Christmas to the ladies of the Crown Jewels. -Cathy Moore NOTE: Opinions expressed Letters to the Editor do not reflect that of anybody except the letter-writer themselves

JUST SAYIN’ A Column by The Old Cowpoke

At my age you either have a helluva lot to say or you should just keep your trap shut, keeping whatever the years have piled on you to yourself. And more often as not someone might’ve told know-itall you to follow the second choice. As it happens I’m kinda all over the place bouncing between those two choices and maybe a mix of both since I’ve been known to spin the odd tale or two into my chatter. Yup, certainly got plenty to say around the old potbelly stove in a line shack. When I moved to this area of the Shuswap I arrived somewhat in a rainy fog. Really. I was pretty much lost from the moment one of the dogs escaped on a pee-break beside the highway on the Chase side of Salmon Arm. Without GPS gadgetry in my truck and just hastily scribbled notes to refer to, I could’ve ended up in Banff instead of wherever I was supposed to go. What with my old cell cutting out, interior lights shorting, the dogs noisily freaking out at the 18-wheelers barreling at us, those windshield wipers whacking and inoperable tail lights to contend with my Shuswap adventure was certainly not boring. Fortunately my host friend met me in a well-lit A&W parking lot and after

polishing off a bag of goodies we were to make our way in convoy to a destination, “way out there”. Good plan but when we attempted to start the engine everything just clicked. Click, click, click, click. That dreaded sound we all hate. So there you go… “welcome to the neighborhood” and as we roll into 2020 you can join in my Shuswap adventures, share some challenges and hopefully, hear me out. I’ll be throwing out a mixed bag, and from a personal perspective addressing local happenings, maybe some tongue-in-cheek personal advice-tothe lovelorn, musings, whining, food and beverage, travel, headaches and bellyaches. A whole lot of “been there, done that’s”. Note that I’ll happily be pushing-the-envelope, treating certain areas with irreverence and hopefully bring you a grin or two. “Just sayin’” is an ideal name for this column ‘cause as an old cowpoke, as opinionated as I get sliding into yet another new year I’ve got a lot things to discuss just sayin’. And as my mother would say at this time of year, raising her wee dram of Scotch, toasting to the New Year, “Here’s looking at you!” … just sayin’.

CHASED OUT OF DESERT AND PURSUED BY POSSE The game that includes chase and pursuit saw that happen on the road for the local Chase HEAT this past weekend. The 52 passenger metal main road monster left town Friday morning for the desert, home of the Osoyoos COYOTES with the shinny masters aboard. Riding a 7 game win streak Chase was hoping to extend it with a contest versus the Desert Dogs. A number of factors came into play; not enough desperado to play in the desert, fast versus flat, coyotes howled and heat fizzled out, too little too late, and most certainly it was Friday the 13th!

submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat Facing a very hot goaltender in Curt Doyle the HEAT fired 44 shots, 23 in the 3rd period and lost. In the first Colton Nikiforuk on the man advantage from Cam Watson and Breckin Erichuk opened scoring. A little over 3 minutes later Osoyoos tied it up, 1-1 after 1. Five goals scored in the 2nd period, Erichuk from Nikiforuk and Hayden Wiebe, then a pair from the COYOTES. Trevor Kennedy scored on the powerplay assisted by Matthew Poole and Brandon Gremaud, however the hosts scored the game winner on the man advantage

The next night Saturday, December 14th Chase faced the POSSE in Princeton. The HEAT struck twice in the 1st period, Gavin Mattey from Luke Recchi and Erichuk before Evan Hughes from Gremaud and Rhys Lepine. In the 2nd stanza Chase popped in another pair, Nikiforuk from Erichuk and Watson, before Erichuk got his first of the game from Nikiforuk and Lepine. In the 3rd period Erichuk got his 2nd goal from Jayden Russell and Jacob Biensch. Led by the 33 stop shutout performance by star Vince Bennedetto, the HEAT won 5-0 to get back to winning ways. Erichuk over the two games scored 3 goals and 3 assists, to lead the locals in scoring while sitting 8th overall in the KIJHL. A don’t miss this one, happens Saturday the 21st at the Art Holding Memorial Arena when the HEAT meet the Kelowna CHIEFS. Bring the kids for a big treat and help rock the Chaos Castle in the last contest before a short Christmas Break! New Year’s Eve at 5:00 pm the HEAT host the Kamloops STORM at AMHA! Heat Beat: Erichuk, Hughes, Nikiforuk and Mattey are all in the top 25 is scoring league wide, Wiebe sits just outside at 30th. Bennedetto stats wise is 5th for goalies in the KIJHL. The HEAT wish to announce the scouting engagement of Sean Gilbert from Calgary as the organization’s Head Scout. He is well connected in the greater Calgary area as well as coaching a Midget AA team in Airdrie, which will greatly assist recruiting efforts for the future. The HEAT remain 4th overall in the 20 team KIJHL! We are looking forward with the team’s continued success in finding more fans in the stands cheering on super winter time entertainment!
