Message from the Mayor by Mayor David Lepsoe
Christmas is almost here. Many Christmas events have already happened, and the Christmas spirit has arrived. In the past year both Council and staff have been working very hard preparing for the next three years. Priorities and budget preparations have been established. Improvements and future upgrades are in the planning stages. We have made a few changes to staff and other areas and are now ready to move forward in a friendly confident manner. It has been a very successful year for our lovely little Village. We made it though the power outages of last winter, the crime / safety of the community seems to be heading in a more positive direction, and of course we came though the wildfire season quite well. The Village continues to grow, and more importantly, with young families moving to our Village. We have a few housing projects in various stages. We currently have a major $5,900,000 upgrade to the sewer system under construction. We did some upgrades to the Arena and a new roof has just been completed for the Curling rink. The one and a half million dollars we got from the Provincial government has been put in the bank for use for some of the
upcoming projects. The Highway project has been put on pause over winter and we eagerly wait for its completion next year. This project will also tie into our hiking trail system, both in town and the Scatchard trail system. Some of the most notable are the fully funded Water Fall trail, the Whitfield Landing trail (skate park to the third Ave. bridge), and the Active Transportation path along Coburn street. Many special community events happened this year, Canada Day, Music on the Lake, Chase Country Christmas and the recent CPKC Holiday Train Not to forget the many events put on by our fantastic service clubs. These events would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the Community groups, businesses and committees made up of residents, staff, and Council members. During the season of goodwill and peace, let’s not forget those in our Village who may need a little extra help in order to make their day brighter. In closing, on behalf of Council and staff, I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The Catholic Church of Chase invites you all to our Christmas Masses. Dec. 17, Sunday @ 8:00 am • Dec. 23, Saturday @ 4:00 pm Dec. 24, Sunday @ 4:00 pm • Dec. 30, Saturday @ 4:00 pm Dec. 31, Sunday @ 8:00 am

“The Helping Hand”
submitted by Beverley Iglesias (The Helping Hand) Fall of 2018, a need for financial assistance arose within the community. With previous project and fundraising experience, “The Helping Hand” volunteer group was formed. Starting with two sucessful music performances in 2019, the Summer CCR Tribute and Eagle Eyes (Eagles) assisted Ronald McDonald House Charities. In 2023, five events were planned to support local community projects, included Parkside Senior Bus, Summer Wildfires, medical
treatment for individuals and the most recent, Chromebooks for Handane Elementary School PAC. With the help and support of local sponsors and the community as a whole, fundraising this year surpassed $40,000.00. As we wind down 2023, “The Helping Hand” wish to thank the Community of Chase and surrounding area for your generosity and support. Happy Holiday and the very best to a prosperous New Year.

HA HA I got expelled from my mime class. Maybe it was something I said? •
Not all construction work is equally enjoyable. For example, enlarging a drilled hole is boring, but fastening pieces of metal together is riveting. •
Fill in the blank squares so that each row, each column and each 3-by-3 block contain all of the digits 1 thru 9. If you use logic you can solve the puzzle without guesswork.
When tried to get one ice cube, I got one, but when I tried to get two ice cubes, I ended up with eight. And when I tried to get three, I ended up with 27! That’s when I realize I was getting ice cubed.

Chase & District Museum & Archives – A History Treasury by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author and Journalist
We are our past—whether as individuals, communities, or countries. And in order to go forward effectively, it’s important to look back and to learn. Shuswap’s history is a draw for locals and visitors alike. And there’s plenty to see and learn in this beautiful valley nestled in BC’s interior— especially at the Chase & District Museum. No discussion about the village’s museum would be complete without mention of its most significant artifact—the antique building itself. Formerly one the town’s places of worship, the Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament includes an interesting (and ‘mobile’) back story. Parishioners originally congregated in a small vestry building on Thompson Avenue commencing in 1909. This building was moved to near the current Shuswap Avenue in 1920. Two years later in 1922, the present church cum museum was constructed with its bell tower, vaulted ceiling and choir loft/balcony as adjunct to the vestry structure. About 1945, Shuswap Avenue was continued east beyond the church and became the highway, at which time the entire church building was moved further back on its property to allow for road widening. The Chase & District Museum & Archives Society, formed in 1984, purchased the Blessed Sacrament Church structure when it was replaced with the current larger church building, and officially opened it as the Chase Museum in 1987. Nearly 25 years later, an arsonist set fire to the venerable clapboard museum. On Saturday, July 9, 2011, firefighters doused a fire that caused minimal damage but took
out the museum’s electrical and fire alarm system. The following Tuesday, July 12, the building, sans alarm, was again ablaze, this time with dire consequences. Although flame, smoke and water damage was extensive, most of the museum’s collections were saved—with the exception of one memorable piece: the large storefront mural, dating from about 1911, painted by renowned artist Howard Smith. It had hung over the entrance to Clegg’s Harness & Shoe Repair Shop on 1st Avenue and eventually was donated to the museum. The mural was damaged beyond repair. As was often the custom, it had been painted on the reverse side of linoleum, and the surface completely crumbled. A huge canvas photo of the artwork and storefront, undoubtedly with the Cleggs at its centre, currently hangs in the main exhibit room—all that remains of that valuable piece. A sidenote: the business’s late proprietors, John Clegg Sr. and his son, John Clegg Jr., originally from Ontario, are maternal relatives of your journalist—something I learned upon moving to Chase from Ontario in 2016. Following the near disastrous fire, the Village of Chase purchased the museum, in order to assist with the shortfall in funding needed for repair and refurbishment. And with the invaluable help of numerous volunteers, Phoenixlike, the Chase Museum, whose structure remained intact, rose from the ashes, resilient and better than before. Museum Managing Curator Breanne Malo advises that locating and assessing the museum’s 9,983 recorded artifacts
post-fire is ongoing, with nearly 3,000 still to be found within the museum’s storage areas. And then there’s the Laviolette (“Lovelette”) cabin located next to the museum proper. Dating from the early 1900’s and once the Turtle Valley family home of Richard and Sarah (nee Cinmenak of the Neskonlith First Nation), this main part of a rustic residence is an absolute gem. Its donation to the museum in 2007 initiated sourcing of funds, its careful transportation, the support of many area businesses and the Village, heritage restoration, First Nations Elders blessing, and the collective efforts of a band of keen volunteers. Along with a vintage road grader, another external artifact, housed in its own garage, is a 1923 Franklin Touring car. Curator Breanne reports that the 100-year-old vehicle once belonged to Robert Mason, an accountant employed by the Adams River Lumber Company at its Chase mill site. The story goes that Robert was sent to Vancouver to pick up a new company car, to be transported to the Village by train—and when he saw the vehicle, he immediately decided he wanted one for his own use. Hence, two new cars were shipped by rail to Chase—and one is still here. The local Lions Club eventually acquired the automobile, had a building constructed for it, and extended it on permanent loan to the museum. Yes, the Franklin still runs and has been driven in local parades in the recent past—a travelling history piece. Continued on page 12...

Championing Chase Museum
Curator Breanne has always had a keen interest in history and has enjoyed touring museums, which eventually led to employment as Chase’s professional archivist. Although she thoroughly enjoys the work, Breanne accepts that she will probably never be able to discern every detail about every artifact, photo, or record within the museum’s collection. However, she remains hopeful that a new undertaking may fill in some of the gaps. The ‘Memories of Chase’ project will involve video interviews with longtime residents and elders of Chase relating their past, their stories, and details of years gone by. When asked about her favourite exhibit or article, Breanne is hard pressed to choose just one—although she does concede that the large 1912 photograph of ten baseball players and three other men is very special. It is a very clear picture, even enlarged—a great photo but cam to the museum with only a few names. Over the last few years, however, she has discovered more names of those in it, and the picture has aided in identifying some in other photographs. The baseball snapshot has become a keystone item for its Curator. Exhibits within the museum are often decided upon by the time of year, such as Remembrance Day, a holiday season, or a particular classic
object. It’s then that the artistic and creative ability of the Curator is also on display. The museum’s springtime Strawberry Tea and the its annual Christmas Store are favourite local events, the proceeds from which help to support this significant historical component of the Village. And of course, numerous volunteers, including its dedicated Board of Directors: Anne Malo, Janie Emeny, Joey Nash, Laura Emeny, Maureen Torbohm, Melody Koivisto, Roger Behn, and Sher Dickson, contribute many hours and skills to the Museum’s operation—whether that be decision-making, recordkeeping, research, fundraising, or maintenance. All important and made special by the giving. Museum memberships are available and important to sustaining this Village attraction: • Individual: 1 year $12; 3 years $32; 5 years $50 • Family (2+): 1 year $20; 3 years $55; 5 years $90 Through the Chase Museum, the past is well served and preserved, with bygone narratives intact for today’s visitors and for the citizens of tomorrow. Its buildings and their special contents are valuable assets to the region and vital to the mosaic that is the Village story.
