The Chase Lions Guardian Angel Tree The Chase Lions are reaching out to community members to nominate individuals that they feel are in need of assistance. We all know this past year has been depressing and stressful for many. That makes the holiday season even more depressing for some. If you know someone in need of extra cheer, a senior, a young adult, a family, or single parent please let us know. All information received is 100% confidential. The Chase Lions will place a Guardian Angel Tag on the tree at Eye Candy
and community members can take a tag and purchase a suggested item for that individual and bring it back to the tree at Eye Candy. The Chase Lions will also be purchasing supplies and then distributing to the nominated individuals before Christmas. Help us to help others, it will make your heart full and happy to help others. For nominations or more info call Sandra Welton 778-245-3808 or Karen Bassett 250318-4527 or email chaselions67@gmail. com
Interior Health begins COVID-19 pediatric vaccines Children in Interior Health five to 11 years old will be able to get their COVID-19 vaccine starting this week. “We’re launching the next phase of our immunization campaign by now offering the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine to children,” said Dr. Sue Pollock, Interior Health interim chief medical health officer. “This vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in children, which means less disruption to school and the activities children and their families enjoy.” Parents and guardians must register their children at www.getvaccinated.gov. bc.ca or call 1‑833‑838‑2323. When a nearby clinic is available, parents and guardians will receive a text or email when it is time to book an appointment. “Immunizing children brings additional protection to everyone in your family,”
said pediatrician Dr. Shannon Wires. “The pediatric COVID-19 vaccine has gone through a rigorous review and approval process. It provides excellent protection and I recommend parents get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.” Children are eligible for registration on or after their fifth birthday. For more information on registering and booking appointments with your children visit: https://www. interiorhealth.ca/health-and-wellness/ disease-outbreaks/covid-19/vaccinesfor-children-5-11 For a list of all Interior Health COVID-19 immunization clinics and other resources visit: https://www.interiorhealth.ca/healtha n d - w e l l n e s s / d i s e a s e - o ut bre a k s / covid-19

Food Bank News submitted by Chase Hamper Society
"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas"! at the Food Bank! Donations of food, toys, cash, and offers to help arrive almost every day! The bins at Safety Mart, Pharmachoice and the Post Office are being loaded up with food for our shelves, and it shows! Monetary donations are being received from various individuals and organizations, business etc., and with those funds we are able to purchase items needed for Christmas Hampers as well as other items in short supply! Both RBC and the Credit Union will write a receipt for donations received in bank! Our purchasing power as a Food Bank works out to about $3 for every $1 donated, and every donated dollar goes to food and supplies for our clients. We serve a large area from Pritchard to the west, Chase Creek and Turtle Valley to the south, Squilax to the east, and Adams Lake and the North Shuswap all the way to Seymour Arm to the north. At Christmas we recognize a dedicated group of volunteers in the
North Shuswap who provide Christmas Hampers for that area. During the rest of the year, those clients are welcome to access the Food Bank in Chase. Our second Christmas Hamper Registration and Toy Shop day brought in many more registrations for Christmas Hampers and more parents browsing the Toy Shop for gifts to put under the tree for their little ones! There is one more Registration and Toy Shop day on Monday, Dec. 13 from 1-3pm. If you or someone you know is in need of a little help to brighten Christmas, please drop in and register for a Christmas Hamper. All registrations and info is kept confidential! Pick up day will be Dec. 22. Delivery can also be arranged! Our last regular Food Bank day is Monday Dec. 6 from 1-3. Anyone needing to pick up from the Food Bank on Monday is asked to phone ahead to 250-682-6155 and reserve a time, so we can have your food hamper ready.

GABBING ABOUT GAVIN submitted by Scott Koch
The writer prefers to scratch out positive stories to those who take the time to read about the Chase HEAT Junior Hockey Club. A bit stumped of late due to some stumbling by the team over the past couple of weeks, I stumbled myself, into Heat Central. To my surprise I caught a couple of schemers busy at adjusting, altering, and possibly adding, President Darryl Adamson and General Manager Lars Pittendreigh. When asked what I could possibly scribble down, they immediately suggested Gavin Mattey, the former local lad and HEAT veteran who shipped out to the La Ronge ICE WOLVES of the Junior A Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. To say they were proud of the young fellow’s exploits would be an understatement. Todate this season Gavin has been in 29 games and at time of writing he
was the top scorer on the team with 15 goals and 9 assists. 9 of those goals were scored on the powerplay which is tops in the league. The young Mattey is a class act and hard to get two words out of, so this amateur pencil pusher didn’t chat it up with one of communities finest. It’s easy to be proud of him though! His success is what lifts up all the hardworking volunteers and hockey hounds that support the team…it makes it all worthwhile. A lot closer to home the HEAT clashed in the houseboat capital of Canada versus the Sicamous EAGLES on Friday November 26th. With 3 seconds in overtime left our team lost a heartbreaker. With the regulation time tie they got a kiss your sister point, which isn’t the point. The snake bitten crew now has 4 overtime losses in 16 games, ouch! Sicamous got the only goal in the 1st period, in the 2nd they got another pair prior to Owen Dean the big dman popping
in his first of the season with help from Corson Nordick. In the 3rd stanza Matthew Poole with assistance from Lucas Ouellette and Jacob Biensch, followed 15 minutes later with Captain Biensch from Poole tieing the game up. Not enough on that night as the game concluded 4-3 for the hosts. Onto Saturday night at our local Chaos Castle and the mad bears from Revelstoke paid a visit. Out manned, out scored and out skated this game limped to an end with a 5-1 outcome. Garrett Martin from Brayden Haskell and Braeden Huth tallied to ruin the GRIZZLIES attempt at a shutout. Out of all that will come some soul searching as to what to fix next. Hints tell me a good sized forward is making his way here from Moose Jaw Saskatchewan after playing in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. So possibly help is on it’s way, with more to come? Saturday night the 4th of December, as part of Chase Country Christmas the Kelowna Chiefs provide the competition with a 7:00 pm start. Kelowna and Chase have always had each other’s backs off the ice, not so much on the icy surface. This one sets up to be a Chiller Thriller, so grab your coat, grab your hat, and make the game in seconds flat. We would love to see you at the game while enjoying a mocha, poutine and a dog from the Chilli Areena Cantina. Ba da boom!

Wally was born in the Netherlands and raised in Hynes Creek, Alberta. He moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta to work and raise his children. Wally retired from farming in 2015 and he and Lynn moved to Chase shortly thereafter. Wally always enjoyed chatting with those he would see on his daily walks, especially when he was accompanied by his faithful friend Roxy, our Pomeneranian. Wally loved getting a deal for anything whether it was a Dutch breakfast, wood from someone's backyard or a pen he'd seen at a yard sale. After retiring, Wally put his energy into home projects including building raised garden beds and making sure the raspberry bushes produced a bounty so Lynn could make him jam. Wally will be truly missed by his family, friends and all that knew him. As per Wally's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Donations can be made to Chase Fire and Rescue, that would be greatly appreciated.

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE:
A Patient Advent by Tyler Harper
Shuswap Better at Home
With the end of November here we are starting to see Christmas trees and lights go up, extra flyers in our mailboxes, and the anticipation of the coming holiday. Christmas is an exciting time and for the Christian Church, it is a very necessary time — even if the focus has shifted over the centuries.
• Grocery delivery • Pick up and delivery of drugstore items & prescriptions • Support with meal program and food bank delivery • Check In and Friendly Visit calls • Housekeeping, subject to availability
There is so many good things that Christmas brings and I always enjoy wishing people a Merry Christmas. But I don’t do that now because it isn’t Christmas yet. The calendar that the Christian Church has traditionally followed for thousands of years actually starts four weeks before Christmas with the season of advent.

No one, to my knowledge, has invented a popular greeting for advent. There is no equivalent to Merry Christmas for advent. This might because advent is a hard topic, because advent is all about waiting. Advent is a reminder of the waiting that the people of God experienced for the first arrival of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. But advent is also a reminder that we continue to wait for His return. We don’t like to wait. When I was in my teens I had a friend who always made me wait for him. We’d agree that I would pick him up at 7pm, I would arrive at 6:59 and then spend 20 to 30 minutes sitting in my car for him. I didn’t like it. As a society we don’t like waiting. Fast Food that once seemed like such a convenience, now includes far too much waiting, so now people order food and drinks online and have them waiting when we arrive. Our food waits for us, instead of the other way around. We live in an age of now, an ‘on demand’ world. From pre-ordering food online to binge watching our favourite show,
we are formed to believe that if we just get our food now, or we get that thing we think we need now, or have that experience then we’ll be satisfied, then we’ll be happy. This mentality has become deeply entrenched in Christmas traditions: host the perfect party, buy the perfect gift for the kids, decorate with enough lights and then everything will be merry and bright, then we’ll have enough. We start to think we can achieve fullness; we can grasp ‘enough’ ourselves. I am convinced that the season of advent, of waiting and anticipating, is more important now than ever. When I stop for a moment or two, when I am quiet, I am reminded that there are some things that are worth waiting for. That somethings are sweeter because of the process, the waiting, the working. Fulfillment necessitates anticipation. This is why I find advent so important, because in advent I am reminded that I can’t grab onto or buy the things that are most important. In advent, I am reminded that the most important, the most life giving, and the most satisfying things, are worth waiting for and need to be waited for. We can’t rush love and nothing that I can do can speed up my waiting. My satisfaction isn’t something that I can control myself or even that I can gain, because it requires something bigger, something outside of myself, something worth waiting for. Patience is a virtue, and patience actually brings deeper value to life. I look forward to wishing each of you a Merry Christmas, but for now may I wish you a very patient advent. 12 Simple Ways to Reduce Christmas Consumption by Michelle Pugle, Chase Environmental Action Group
‘Tis the season for gifting, gathering, and going green! Yes, it’s possible to enjoy the most wonderful time of year and reduce your Christmas consumption. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can find yourself celebrating all that this season offers and giving back to the planet all at once.
4. Choose handmade products: We’re fortunate to live in Chase where there’s such a thriving artisan community. Consider supporting smaller ‘mom and pop shops’ that offer more sustainable handmade products ranging from pottery, art, jewelry, and non-toxic beauty products.
Why this matters. Well, if this past year has shown us anything, it’s that the climate crisis doesn’t take holidays. Not summer, not fall, and certainly not Christmas. In fact, the environmental cost of Christmas is so massive that this time of year has become known as ‘the world’s greatest annual environmental disaster.’ Not a good look, right? The good news is that we have the personal power to make sustainable changes to old traditions without sacrificing fun and festivities.
5. Rethink wrapping: It’s becoming easier than ever to find recyclable paper options, but you can also choose to wrap items in other gifts including scarves and bandanas, mesh produce bags, baskets, and beeswax wraps.
Here are 12 ways to reduce consumption this Christmas 1. Ask and thou shall receive: This year, try asking your loved ones what they really need. This way you can avoid buying someone more stuff that just sits on shelves, or worse, ends up in the landfill later on. 2. Prioritize memories over material goods: The spirit of Christmas is alive in the memories we make with friends and family. Consider spending time together rather than spending money shopping online. 3. Shop local: Speaking of online shopping… It may be convenient, but that convenience comes at a cost. Instead of ordering mass-produced products that are shipped from outside Canada, keep it as local as you can afford.
6. Support your local farmers: No one’s asking you to totally revamp your Christmas dinner, but considering where your food comes from is a step in the right direction. When you purchase meat, dairy, and produce from local sources, you cut down on the ecological cost of transporting and storing food from farmers to grocery stores to your table. 7. Use single-colour Energy Star Christmas lights: By choosing single-colour strings instead of multi-color strings, you can save up to 90% more energy, according to RONA. 8. DIY your decorations: Making your own Christmas decorations (e.g., ornaments, wreaths, centerpieces) is a great way to get into the holiday groove while reducing your consumption. Homemade items are treasures to keep forever and can be made with more sustainable materials than the plastic and styrofoam you find in stores.
9. Turn your houseplant into a Christmas tree: If you want an alternative to cutting down a tree or buying an expensive artificial option, simply decorate one of those big houseplants you brought home during the pandemic. Norfolk pine trees make an excellent choice that will continue to bring joy and that desired pine smell for decades. 10. Consider plantable Christmas cards: Yes, they exist! Plantable Christmas cards are made with seeds that will sprout into flowers or veggies after being put into the ground or a pot with soil. You can even find DIYs to make your own. This makes for a great kid-friendly craft. 11. Skip disposables: Use the fine China that’s been collecting dust and opt for cloth napkins over tossing away items. If you must use disposables, opt for those made from bamboo and try to get more than a single-use. 12. Freeze food you can’t consume right away: Be honest with yourself about how much turkey and pie you and yours are really going to eat. Anything that’s bound to spoil if it sits for more than a few days should be frozen for later. This prevents unnecessary food waste, which also saves you money. Merry Christmas to all!
