Hamper Society Post-Christmas Update submitted by Chase Hamper Society
The volunteers at the Chase Hamper Society would like to thank all the wonderful people of Chase and area who so generously support the work we do, both at Christmas and throughout the year! What a year it has been! Our operations have had to expand considerably to meet our goal of providing nutritious food to all who may need a little help, throughout the year, and especially at Christmas! The efforts of so many throughout the year, and the past couple of months in particular, has resulted in us being able to fill many Christmas hampers, as well as provided food to fill our shelves for the first of 2022 as well! Your ongoing generosity and support is much appreciated! Our first regular Food Bank day of 2022 will be from 1-3PM on Tuesday, January 4, due to the stat holiday. If you
are able to send us a message through Facebook to register for our next Hamper day, please do. We are unable to receive or return phone calls at this time, as one of the last people to pick up their Christmas Hamper on Dec. 22, decided to give themselves a bonus and take our phone with them! The phone number has been suspended until we can get a replacement, so if you sent us messages in the meantime, we apologize for not getting back to you, but we have no access to the number at this time! We hope to be back on line soon! If you would like to join us and volunteer some time with the Food Bank, please contact us and let us know! 250682-6155 is the number, once we have another phone! Or message us anytime! From all of us at the Food Bank, HAPPY NEW YEAR! We wish you all the very best in 2022!

TURNING THE HEAT UP IN DECEMBER by Scott Koch
As we get closer to the end date in the wacky year of 2021, your HEAT have caught fire! After losing 4 straight from November 19th – December 4th, the roster did a flip flop and stepped on the ice a different team. They learned that pace, pressure and passion plus unrelenting hardwork can beat any foe any day of the week. No matter defensive end, offensive end or mid ice they buzz like mad hornets, and it works! They have a 5 and 1 record in the win column since then, not so shabby says this pencil lead snapper. Everyone on the roster deserves some credit but a fellow can’t stop thinking that 3 new pieces have more then helped. Dylan Handel from Beaumont Alberta, Mikkel Hrechka from Moose Jaw Saskatchewan and the new kid on the block Tanner Chapman from Airdrie Alberta, have brought a great desire to win and it’s been contagious. So, the weekly recap involves 3 games crammed into 5 days. Tuesday the 14th the crew tootled on down to Princeton to faceoff versus the Posse. No scoring in the 1st, a Posse popper in the 2nd and Handel’s 9th of the season in the 3rd from Jacob Biensch. Tied in regulation it was off to overtime where Hrechka with his 1st with the HEAT scored the game winner. Jack Osmond stopped 33 of 34 to backstop the victory. Friday the 17th the tootle transport dropped them off in Rutland to tangle with the Kelowna Chiefs. A game they could have won got away from them on this night. Kelowna notched a tally but Matthew Poole fired right back helped by Mr. Point Getter himself Biensch. In the 2nd the Chiefs got 2 across the goal line prior to Diego Flota notching his 1st of the season
aided by the Poole brothers James and Matthew. The 3rd period saw Hrechka on the powerplay from Lucas Ouellette and Biensch tie the contest up. On their 50% successful powerplay the Chief ’s stuck the dagger in the hearts of the Heat to claim a one goal game 4-3. If the passes had been crisper and the receiving a bit more aggressive things would have been different. Poor Lucas Oullette was snake bitten as multiple top notch efforts didn’t find the twine. Rod May repelled 28 of 32 as the last man back. Finally, the Heat came home for a Saturday night confrontation on the 18th with the Kamloops Storm. Superb goal tending at both ends was just one part of an edge of your seat night of entertainment. The Loopers cashed in during the 1st 20 minutes. In the 2nd they threw everything at Jack Osmond they could including 12 shots and were denied. In the 3rd the new guy with something to offer was Tanner Chapman from Aiden Brown and Owen Dean, all tied up in regulation time. No scoring in overtime and it was off to the shootout. Sharp shooters Ouellette and Handel did a dandy job of delivering a duo of beauties for the win and Osmond got mugged by his teammates in thanks…ouch. As an add on the home and away series with the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS was postponed until later dates. The next opportunity to take a gander and enjoy a wobbly is Sunday January 2nd 2022!... versus the Revelstoke Grizzlies. Game time is 4:00 pm. Here starts the New Year…bring it in with the hottest product on cold ice….in CHASE! Bangaboom!

Stay safe as COVID-19 cases increase Interior Health Press Release Stay home if you are feeling unwell. Don’t risk spreading any infection to others. Postpone plans to get together with others and limit your contacts as much as possible while you’re sick. Get tested. Testing sites are experiencing increased demand for testing and more appointments are being added regularly. Use the BC COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool to determine if you need a test for COVID-19. Stay isolated if you have symptoms while you wait for your test result. Be vigilant. As COVID-19 case activity increases, pay attention to your health and the health of your children. Mask up. Wear a mask over your nose and mouth in indoor public settings and situations where physical distancing isn’t possible. Keep your personal gatherings small and to people who are fully vaccinated. Keep household gatherings to the same 10 guests or one other household. Provide enough space to avoid crowding inside and open a window every hour to allow for circulation to
As COVID-19 cases increase in other areas of British Columbia, Interior Health is advising residents in the Interior Region to expect a similar increase in cases in their communities, and urging to take steps to minimize their risk to COVID-19. “Social connections with family and friends over the holidays are important. As we make plans to gather please take steps to decrease your risk of getting sick or spreading disease to others. Omicron is much more transmissible, and gatherings can increase our risk of being exposed. For this reason, we are asking residents in the Interior region to please follow the provincial order to allow for safer gatherings this holidays,” said Dr. Silvina Mema, Interior Health medical health officer. “I encourage everyone to take additional steps to limit the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible.” Get Vaccinated. Book your booster dose as soon as you are eligible and invited to book an appointment at a clinic or pharmacy. Vaccines are available to everyone five and older.
reduce the risk. Gather outdoors rather than indoors. Outdoor activities like hiking, snowshoeing, or gathering around a fire are a safer option to gathering indoors. Minimize non-essential travel. Stay close to home to help prevent the virus spreading to other communities. Do not travel if you are not vaccinated. Shuswap’s globally unique organic coho salmon and cannabis farm by Jim Cooperman, at www.shuswappassion.ca
In the heart of Turtle Valley there is a farming industry. state-of-the-art agricultural operation A one-of-a-kind process was developed that is the only one like it in the world. By that recycles the water used for both the combining inland salmon farming with fish and the cannabis. market because of its recognized quality. One day, they hope to have farm gate sales, which would be far more profitable. Growth is in the horizon for the Habitat team, as they hope to expand their 4-metric ton per year production to one day raising 1,000 tons, as the demand for organic salmon is very high. The market for cannabis has not been as reliable, so their goal is to one day also grow vegetables, beginning with tomatoes and cucumbers. Since the available BC Hydro power is not adequate, they may have to move the operation closer to where there is more electricity available. Habitat’s unique combination of aquaculture with hydroponic agriculture using LED lighting increases the food production per acre of land, eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers, and conserves water. This sustainable production system has a minimal carbon footprint and has little impact on the environment. One day if insect farming was added, production would become nearly self-sufficient. Systems like these have the potential to help provide greater food security along with creating sustainable and circular economic development. The Shuswap is fortunate to be home for such extraordinarily creative and productive young entrepreneurs. Shuswap Passion is a blog by Jim Cooperman full of insightful commentary on politics, economics, environmental issues and culture. Jim is the author of Everything Shuswap.
